    I believe you’re supposed to fully open the pin switch when you are done filling the cartridge. When the pin is all the way down, it’s allowing the C02 in. So if you’re closing it all the way before removing it, you’re just wasting what you just did.

      You're right. The good way is to unscrew in higher position so the round valve on the top of the bottle is not compressed and will not let the CO2 goes out.

    Yeah. It is excellent. Dom would you mind post all the items (adaptors, connectors, tube...) to make this setup? Thanks a lot.

  • @ihayat
    @ihayat 3 года назад +8

    Sorry Dominic, but this video is incorrect and.. could be downright dangerous. Please revise it. When you're screwing in the knob on the SodaStream bottle you're opening the bottle and filling the tube with its pressure. When you screw-out that knob you're closing that SodaStream bottle.
    I have no idea how you would thus manage to get any CO2 into your SodaStream bottle the way you've shown it in your video. When you were "filling it" you had the bottle closed off and then when you decided to stop the "filling" you went and opened the bottle up, releasing its pressure into the tube.
    Then when you went to vent out any residual CO2 left in the line, you were venting 'live' CO2 from the then-open SodaStream bottle, not residual. Hence the huge amount of gas shooting out from both the valve above and the bottle-adapter below.
    I hope anyone seeing this video will see these comments prior to following the advice within it.

      On how he manage to add CO2 to the bottle, I was thinking...
      1st. The bottle was not empty, and he brain-farted while making the video.... If that is why, he wouldn't of warned people about when taking the Sodastream CO2 bottle off, it may "scare" them....
      2nd. MAYBE by opening the tank VERY slowly...Pressure will build up in the line and actually push the pin down??? The line connecting the 2 cannisters is room temperature, which means that when he opens the big valve, (if the tank have a siphon in it...probably does right?) liquid CO2 will rush into the line and instantly turn into gas. Therefore, building pressure and push onto the Sodastream's pin down.

    • @ihayat
      @ihayat 3 года назад +1

      @@TheCyberCorn That's an interesting thought but I've been using this setup for a while now myself and I can't imagine how the pressure in the main tank would end up opening and closing the SodaStream tank's valve by itself. Judging by the amount of gas rushing out there I would think it is indeed evacuating the SodaStream bottle.
      Regardless, the amount of gas lost by doing it this way makes it too wasteful, in my opinion.

    Hello and thanks for the video. You are correct that people write bad reviews bc they try and fill bottles too fast and safety pin in brass fitting prevents refill. Excellent explanation! I did it wrong my first couple times too. 😎. Quick Question: Why was the adapter leaking so much C02, even after you relieved pressure off line with the red ball valve? It shouldn’t be hard to remove adapter from bottle either. With that said, I think you have the orientation on the adapter backwards. the finger nut moves a pin up and down in your adapter. Threaded-in would push pin on soda stream bottle down, which opens the bottle. Threading out the adapter would close the brass pin on bottle and seal it closed. My thought is, when you opened the red ball valve with the adapter threaded in (open) you were actually releasing CO2 from sodastream bottle. I have a similar adapter as you, and mine works the exact opposite as you explained (threaded in open/threaded out closed) I don’t loose near as much C02 as you when releasing pressure and removing adapter. I could be 100% wrong. A test would be to leave red valve open and relieve ALL pressure off line, and see if gauge on adapter slowly drops, which means you’re relieving C02 from tank.

      Andrew, you description is correct for the operation of the adaptor valve. Clockwise in opens the self closing pin valve in the small tank and counter clockwise retracts the plunger and allows the self closing valve to seal.

  • @alandurden1826

    I noticed you screwed the valve/knob all the way in to close the valve in the SodaStream bottle then vented the hose, the problem with that is ,when you are unscrewing the SodaStream bottle out of the fitting you are actually opening the valve in the SodaStream bottle which lets a bit of gas out before the valve closes again as you continue to unscrew the SodaStream bottle,(as it did in this video). if you had screwed the valve/knob all the way out ,before venting the line the valve in the SodaStream bottle would remain closed as you unscrewed the SodaStream bottle so no gas escapes as you unscrew the SodaStream bottle.
    I use a similar adapter(in reverse) for re filling my Umarex 80g CO2 bottles.

  • @oldsloane
    @oldsloane 3 года назад +2

    If you use a scale and refill the exact weight shown on the tank, it won't matter if the tank is cold or room temperature. You are transferring liquid CO2 not gas. The gas is generated when you open the valve to release the CO2 into the sodastream bottle. Never rely on the pressure gauge, it is only a measure of pressure not the actual amount of liquid in the sodastream tank.

  • @Bruisaanhuis

    I tried filling a soda stream cylinder which i cooled in the freezer for about an hour or 2. Using a similar setup but i have an adapter with a high pressure hose attached. The cylinder is standing on a scale while i am filling it up so i can exactly see how much it weighs. With the cooled cylinder i manage to almost fully fill it up. (Which you dont want to do completely because the gas will expand a little more when it reaches room temperature). So when i filled it for about 80% i close the big tank, use the bleed valve and take the cylinder off. While doing this i noticed the soda stream valve (newer disk version) keeps leaking gas. I tried to look this up on the internet but could not find a solution for this problem yet. This happened twice already with 2 different cylinders.. both with the new disk valve. I somehow think this is a build in temper-proof valve which soda stream now uses to force customers to swap the empty cylinders for a new one for the ridiculous price they’re asking.. Has anyone else encountered the same problem i just described and maybe found a solution to solve this issue? Excuse me for my spelling mistakes by the way. Please like this comment so more people can see!! Hope to hear back from someone!:) Peace.
    Edit:
    Found out the following:
    When attaching the adapter on the SS cylinder make sure the knob is in upper position. Then right before opening the donor cylinder turn the knob in lowest position (clockwise) this opens the valve on the SS cylinder. Make sure bleed valve is closed or else some leftover gas could escape from the SS cylinder. Then open the donor cylinder very slowly until you can hear the gas going in the SS cylinder. When filled close donor cylinder and turn knob on adapter back in upper position. Now release leftover gas from the adapter using the bleed valve and if check manometer says 0. Then unscrew the SS cylinder from adapter and now there should be no leakage. The fault i probably made was not driving the pin from the knob into the SS valve which properly opens the cylinder to receive gas and after closing the valve with the same knob. Might also have been to fast with the gas flow which triggered something in the ‘temper-proof’ SS Nozzle?? Correct me if im wrong here. Might overseeing something but i just did it this way and now it works. Thought i broke the valve/ nozzle earlier because of this but this wasn’t the case. Hope this long ass explanation helps others out.

      Luc,
      When you refill Sodastream cylinders, do you refill with a CO2 cylinder that has a siphon tube? I have a 50 lb CO2 tank and I have tried a dozen different Sodastream cylinders and can't fill more than 50-200 grams of CO2. Most of the SS cylinders are small pin older cylinders. I even tried to fill an empty 5 lb standard CO2 cylinder and it only filled about 100 grams. I tried very slowly and once the flow stops it won't fill even a few more grams. I am wondering if I should exchange my full 50lb tank for one with a siphon tube.

    Dude, you have the operation of the sodastream tank valve backwards. Down is open, up is closed. No wonder you have so much gas coming out of the release valve. Think about it. The rotating knob pushes the self closing pin valve in the small tank open, just as the dispenser valve does when you screw the bottle into the dispenser.

    • @MarcelVanderWerf
      @MarcelVanderWerf 4 года назад

      Thought the same... 'out' as well as max 'in' is 'closed'. You have to find the right spot in between, where the pin is pressed in enough to open, but not too far too close it again.

    • @Bruisaanhuis
      @Bruisaanhuis 3 года назад

      @@phill6159 i noticed that you dont even have to use the knob on the adapter for the small tank. Leave it all the way in up position and the pressure does the rest for you.. it pushes the valve so gas can flow in. That is what worked for me. I stumbled upon a different issue which i described in the comments. Still trying to solve that.
      Edit: i just found out that if you do fill the cylinder with the knob in upper position and you disconnect it after the gas keeps leaking. Might have something to do with the valve/ nozzle on the SS cylinder not closing correctly. What i just did is the following. I connect the adapter on the SS cylinder (knob upper position) and on the donor cylinder. Make sure bleedvalve (little screw is closed obv.) and then turn the knob in lower position (clockwise) till its getting tighter. The nozzle/ valve on the SS cylinder is now open and ready to receive gas. Verrrrry gently open donor cylinder until you can hear the gas flow into SS cylinder. Put SS cylinder on scale to track its weight and to monitor if its still filling. When the SS cylinder is cooled it can compress more gas into it. Dont fill it up to much because the gas will expand when warming up inside your house (can be dangerous) go for about 80% i’d say. Then when ready close donor cylinder, turn knob on SScylinder back up upper position and slowly open bleed valve to release the gas inside the hose/ adapter. Unscrew SS cylinder from adapter and you are done. Hope this helps someone.

    You're wasting so much of the co2 by not understanding the valve. All the way down OPENS the bottle pin valve, all the way up closes it CLOSES it. Order of events is: connect everything with everything closed. Open the large co2 tank valve, screw down the orange adapter valve. THEN slowly open the 1/4 turn valve until you just start to hear co2 flowing. Once you're done, close the 1/4 turn again, turn off your large bottle, turn the orange knob until the valve stops all the way up, then you can blead off the gas in the line at the other 1/4 turn valve until it stops. Then you can remove the sodastream bottle. Keep in mind if your bottle doesn't have a dip tube, you may need to turn your bottle upside down.

    As long as there is liquid in the tank, the pressure in a CO2 tank is determined *only* by the temperature. So, unless the tank is nearly empty (only gas, no liquid remaining), the pressure gauge will not show how full it is.
    Fill is checked by weight. Tare weight is stamped near the top. Mine is 0.68 kg. Net weight is 410 g, so the full tank should weigh 1.09 kg.
    If you are using a non-siphon bulk tank, your small tanks are barely filling at all. You can confirm this by weight.
    If you are using a bulk tank with siphon tube, you don't know how full your small tanks are getting. Theoretically could be over-filling, but it doesn't look like it. Again, only way to know is by weight.
    And yeah, you're backwards on the valve at the small tank. Gas is able to go in because the valve poppet is not spring-loaded closed.
    We appreciate the video. It just seems like most of the information is incorrect. The video "How to fill a 20 oz. CO2 tank" shows how to use your system effectively.

    Your description is a little confusing. For the valve that attaches to the soda-stream, there is a pin that presses down on the sodastream canister. This pin is pushed in by screwing clockwise, and this OPENS the sodastream valve. (I know this is opposite the norm).You can test this with your finger just by pressing on the little dot on the sodastream canisters. It's springy. In your video, you open the bypass quarter turn and it just pours out of your soda stream. That should just be a quick release of pressure ONLY in the hose. Great video though. I didn't know I needed to go so slow.

    I am a bit confused ... at 2:08 you said to open up the valve by turning the knob to where it is all the way up. Should it not be the other way around where you turn the knob clock-wise until it is all the way down. This way the center pin pushes the valve on the bottle down so that you can fill it.
    When you are done filling it then you turn the know all the way up so the center pin does not push down the valve on the bottle ... meaning that it is closed.
    I just saw the same question from Amber Valencia.

    It doesn't make sense to me. When you connect the sodastream bottle, you unscrew the knob(loosen anti clockwise) which takes the thread away from the pin in the bottle. On mine and from others this is not the case, screwing clockwise brings the thread down to the pin pressing the pin in and opening up the valve, what you did just don't make sense at all.

    • @m1serfreed477
      @m1serfreed477 2 года назад

      Also to test this theory, if you 1.close off the donor tank valve after filling, 2.close off the flow lever, 3.screw down the gold knob on the sodastream bottle connector, 4.open the purge lever and in theory you should be basically emptying your sodastream bottle. The only other explanation would be that your sodastream connector with gold knob is designed to screw when you unscrew, and unscrew when you screw. Have a look at other users on youtube who have a similar hose and you will see that its clockwise to push the pin down and open up the bottles valve.

When the cylinder is freezed-up the gas will be able to get more compressed which means you’ll be able to fully fill it up. But the downside (and also the danger) of this is that the gas will expand when the cylinder warms up inside your house. When you already filled it to the max or maybe overfilled the cylinder when cooled there is a chance the pressure gets too high which could lead to very dangerous situations.. inside your house.... so please keep this in mind when filling your own cylinders.
