Many, many great ideas in here..there are many videos out there that have sodium reacting explosively with water, but I like to take my classes outside and let them watch me blow up a plastic milk jug..needless to say, lots of questions ensue...This week, I incorporated Google Classroom into my classes and I began posting the "Chemistry question of the day", this gets the students (not all of them 😕...) talking about the daily topic even before I start the lesson!!

Also..had to laugh at the Cher reference..."If I Could Turn Back Time" is one of the songs I sing in the hallway between classes...I only know the 1st two lines, so the kids are always getting on me about learning the rest of the song!!! Great video, Bec!

I will!!! I have a question that I hope your infinite wisdom can answer..What strategies do you use to actively engage quiet/shy/introverted students and how do you make them feel more a part of the class??? I have always struggled with this to the point that I feel like I'm letting the quiet/shy student down...

Such a good question (note to self - add this topic to my video list). I'm quite a loud and extroverted person naturally so I find that tends to help draw some kids out as they see I'm happy to be big and bold and make mistakes in front of them. I find humour is a good method too. One student who had selective mutism would laugh when I would tell her to stop swearing hehe. This was after building a good relationship of trust with her though. I think the key is to role model that it's ok to make mistakes and be yourself. Build a class environment where everyone is acknowledged for being different and that being different makes us awesome, but that we are also a team and we support each other. I always focus on personal best - individual goals. Then if those kids still aren't responding I would look at implementing some more explicit social skills programs - circle time is a good one. But don't ever be afraid to engage the Learning Support Team or school counsellor for some advice. They can do a class visit and see if there's anything you could tweak 😊

Thank you for the advice, I have tried finding what the students are interested in (Marvel vs. DC, Star Wars, , Netflix shows) and engage them outside the classroom (Lunchroom, hallway etc..) and it does seem to enhance their trust in me, but I still have some that fall through the cracks and that's what bothers me..Thanks again..I'm becoming a Bec-aholic!!!! 😀

We removed all the chairs in our classrooms as a hook for a persuasive writing task :) The kids had to think about the advantages of having classroom chairs and the challenges they faced during the day without them, in order to write about why children need chairs at school.

Oh, and we very sneakily hid them in another classroom space so the kids believed they had been removed, for authenticity's sake!
