    What is Sensory Motor Amnesia?
    Let's start by talking about stress. Now, stress is a given in life.
    We experience good stress, like the birth of a baby, engaging in our favorite sport or planning a vacation.
    And then there's bad stress like loss, constant demands on our time, or dealing with a troublesome relationship.
    The problem arises when we become habituated to the stresses of our lives.
    And its this state of habituation that contributes to most cases of chronic muscle pain and many common physiological dysfunctions.
    Because you see, everything in life, for better or for worse, is experienced through the body.
    So this habituated stress often presents itself as muscle tension, meaning muscles that simply won't let go for the long term.
    Now you may do all kinds of wonderful therapies and feel better for a while, but that tension, it just keeps returning.
    And Thomas Hanna called this Sensory Motor Amnesia.
    That means that your brain has lost the ability to both sense and move certain muscle groups voluntarily and skillfully.
    It means that your nervous system is carrying around all this excess tension that you no longer even notice.
    You just feel tight. Your brain, the control center of your muscles, has taught those muscles to stay tight due to repetitive movements, compensation due to injuries or surgeries, and emotional and psychological stresses and traumas.
    Remember, everything is stored in your body. Sensory Motor Amnesia, which we call SMA for short, develops over time.
    And in case you thought SMA only takes hold when you get older, SMA is not age-related. Stress and tension can begin to accumulate even when you're young.
    You just don't seem to notice it until years later. Our brain is an organ of habituation and learning. Whatever we do, consistently and repeatedly becomes a habit at the level of our brain.
    And to be clear, habits are really good. We wouldn't want to have to learn how to walk every morning, right?
    So that being said, movement habits that get in the way of efficiency and comfort can be reassessed, recalibrated and improved.
    No matter your age, we want to be able to respond to stress as needed, but not get stuck in our stress.
