  • This video is intended to raise awareness of the connection between PTSD and Migraine, because it is so treatable with a therapy known as EMDR. This treatment rewires the brain so that the traumatic memories are stored in a neutral part of the brain, rather than being linked to the emotion center in the brain. One third of people with migraine meet criteria for the diagnosis of PTSD, compared to about 10% of the population without migraine. But most of us don't realize it. Part of the reason is that one of the main symptoms of PTSD is avoidance, or numbing. If you'd like to check out the article that I reference at the start of the video, here's the link: pubmed.ncbi.nl...

★☆★ ABOUT DR. AMELIA SCOTT BARRETT ★☆★
After more than 20 years as a Stanford-trained Neurologist, I'm seeing a big problem out there. So many people with migraines are "powering through...". Gotta get the kids to soccer? Take some ibuprofen. Work deadline coming up? Pull out the prescription meds. I'm not judging ~ I totally get it, because I've done those things too. The problem is that when you get to the point where you're having 10 or more headache days a month, then your brain starts to physically change. It's kind of like laying down train tracks that make it easier for the "migraine train" to run through your head.
Instead of powering through, we need to listen to the pain signals and figure out to help the brain actually heal. Does the brain need different nutrients? Do we need to remove toxins? Rewire to the parasympathetic state of healing? We can use modern science to figure out exactly what we need in order to heal, and then we can monitor our bodies with devices to be sure we are making that happen.
Curious? Good! Join me for our Masterclass so I can explain it in more detail!

Wow...my VA neurologist actually put it in a report that it was unfortunate that I have connected the onset of my severe migraines 4-6 per month, with my military service diagnosed PTSD. I am left, grasping for help in the meantime with other explanations other than the OBVIOUS. I actually puke up aka GERD too because of the PTSD And suffer with OSA as well....the VA is very reluctant to admit any causation or connection all back to my PTSD trauma. People all know of the very high suicide rate Veterans suffer from, wonder why? Thank you for posting this informative explanation as it makes a lot of sense in more ways than you may not even realize. Thanks again.

I'm sorry to hear about the challenges you're facing, and it's disheartening that there seems to be reluctance in acknowledging the connection between your severe migraines and PTSD. It's unfortunate when the road to help feels unclear. I'm glad the information provided resonated with you and I think it's important to raise awareness about the complex issues veterans may encounter. If there's anything specific you'd like to share or discuss further, feel free to do so. Wishing you strength and support on your journey.

I talked to the same Neurologist about this who did not relate any of this to me regarding the migraines and the connection to PTSD as you have here. After pressing him on it for wanting to be on the same page for treatment, he came off as being bothered to state the two are in fact established in my case and yet went on to gaslight me for not knowing this already and that for me being less than satisfied with his care... as if I'm supposed to be a mind reader and doctor of my own care with this complex health issue or something? Ugh..anyway, I thanked him none the less and I'm moving on with another neurologist who is more of a migraine specialist. I appreciate your passion with your expertise on this and want to let you know how much of a godsend your video is for me. I am now hopeful that I will be receiving better care soon 🙂

PTSD and gut microbiome changes are linked. As well as neuro inflammation and migraines. Get a fecal matter transplant to recover your microbiome and do high dose magic mushrooms to cure your ptsd. VA won’t cure shit.

I had this treatment at the emdr therapy at the VA. I also had one-on-one auditing for years.

I resonate with every bit of this . Now I have a scientific explanation. I’ve seen a few different therapists but never tried EMDR. Perhaps it’s worth investing more money and trying it . Thank you for the video

Hello Dr. Barrett; I am a veteran. In an interview with my VA benefit investigator. she said that in order to be diagnosed with ptsd. one must be involved in a live and dead situation or withness life threatening situation. Is it true? I have a fellow veteran while he was on leave his platoon got ambushed and killed. the VA awarded him with 100% service connected ptsd condition. Dr. Barett please comment.

Can headaches hurt memories after awhile and quit caring about everything ?

Chronic headaches and migraines can definitely cause many different emotional symptoms as well. It can be very helpful to talk with a licensed professional therapist or counselor during these times.

The migraine unleashes amgydala overfiring. The overfiring manifests as PTSD symptoms. These are pseudobulbar and occur in migraineurs. The PTSD symptoms will not occur in the absence of migraine. If the migraines suddenly remitted so would the PTSD.
