    Great vid man. I own this and the TCL and this 28mm is on my x100v 90 percent of the time.
    If anyone reading likes the focal length - personally it might be my fav - then get it. The image quality doesn’t drop and you still get surprisingly good out of focus area when shot wide open depending on ur distance from a subject, better than I expected and not that far off my 28mm f2 on my Sony full frame. Only gripe is the flash is hindered with this on.
    I write this because you might end up in forums to read about it and you’ll see these ppl who go on and on about how you shouldn’t add anything to this camera - not even a grip - cause the whole philosophy is to keep it compact and limited. To those people I say, nobody asked.

    • @MC-hr1py
      @MC-hr1py 2 года назад

      @KnytWolfOFFICIAL It casts a shadow as the bottom of the flash gets blocked by the protrusion of the adaptor. Even most lens hoods do this on the normal 23mm lens unless you get a square hood type.
      If you want to use flash with this lens you will need a hot shoe flash

    My x100v always travels with me, as does the WCL. Best accessory, apart from my handmade strap, I have for the camera. No degradation in image quality, weighs nothing, takes up no space and 28mm gives me a completely different feel to 35 (full frame equivalent).

    Hey Benj- Nice. Forgive me if I’ve already said this, but when I reviewed the original TCL-X100 converter on the X100s, I was blown away that there was no discernible quality loss. I just had the idea to keep the X100F and get a WCL for it, then get the new X100V replacement, keeping it as is as a 35mm equivalent…

    I got myself the X100V and the WCL as soon as it became available (preordered several months in advance). The lens is big step forward from the one in my X100f which suffered from uneven sharpness in the field at infinity as well as less sharpness up close and wide open. The old lens still has the edge in the center but by a very small margin. The WCL combined with the X100V gives results which are very hard to tell apart from the camera without the extender, it is really, really good. I have no reservations to use it instead of my X-T3 with a prime lens for landscapes which I expect to be sharp edge to edge within the limits of the 26MPx-sensor. All in all it is a compact and well working package and a joy to use with or without the WCL.

    I decided to do something a little different and get the WCL-X 70, which is the conversion lens for the X70, giving a slightly wider angle of view of approximately 26mm, for a lot less money. It's a perfect fit, and, using the blu-tac and tiny magnet trick stuck on the inside of the conversion lens, it's automatically picked up with the X100V's magnetic sensor.
    I've also got the TCL 50mm equivalent and it's pretty good, though very slightly soft - so it's better on the X100V than the X100F.
    Love your channel.

      @@benjhaisch I have the wcl-x70 as well it’s an interesting proposition. I am still playing with it.
      The wcl-x100 is a workhorse for me. I do not yet trust the x70. It’s bigger and seems at times softer - but I need more testing to see if user error or lens issue. With the magnet hack I get the same functionality as the gen ii of the x100 lenses. The reason to get the x70 was landscape photos. Getting the widest I can get. The wider field of view is definitely noticeable if not dramatic.

    I have the 28mm converter attached to X100V permanently, as i really like the ratio and the quality of the converter is excellent. It makes me wonder why Fuji chose 35mm for the camera in the first place, maybe for after market sales. I have not tried the 50mm - a great learning lens but for me less versatile.

  • @awake780

    I waffled on buying the WCL to pair with my X100V. I don’t know why I second guessed it. It stays on my camera 85-90% of the time. I should mention that I’m using the mk 1 version with a permanent magnet installed inside to trigger the camera to correct the image. It ended up costing me about 50% of a new mk 2 version.

    I have both the wcl and the TCL. I love the TCL. It doesn't really seem like a conversion lens at all. I also shoot a leica m10 and GFX 50R. The x100v can hold its own. I'm going to try it out on one of my paid gigs. 🙂

  • @dozyaustin

    thanks for the video. Great perspective and gorgeous shots.
    I own and love the WCL for the same reasons you mention. It makes chasing kids around easier and lets more of the vista enter the frame. When I pack for a day out with the camera the WCL is usually with me in my pack.
    I also own the TCL and while I use it less I love having 50mm available for portraits. It comes with me on trips and at times in my day pack and often when with me I find a reason to screw it on and am usually glad I did. It’s big, but the 50mm is so much more flattering and the bokeh on it is so pretty and smooth.
    I also own the WCL-X70 lens. And I am still deciding if I should keep it or sell it forward.

    This was my daily driver for over a year (28mm converter and all). I was super excited about it, being a 1.2x crop. But the DR is obviously the same as a crop sensor, and you have a stop down to 2.8 to be sharp. I looked past all that for 1 year because there were far more pros than those 2 small cons. In the end I sold it because the look of Fuji didn’t match my FF cameras, and I place a high value on consistency in my photography. I can pick out which images are shot with the Fuji from the thumbnail. Not saying the images were bad… they were great and fantastic, just different from my main system.

    • @benjhaisch
      @benjhaisch  2 года назад

      I find the APS-C Fujifilm RAF files to be a little flatter and harder to achieve that "depth" that I get with FF & MF images right off the bat, but it's possible for sure. Just a bit more work.

      Probably depends on your expectations for resolution/sharpness/etc, but the GRIII could be a good option, although if you already have the X100VI, getting the WCL is a great idea as well if you like the IQ out of that camera. It obviously adds a bit of size, but it’s not too bad.

    Hi Benj,
    I’m an avid Fuji landscape photographer based out in Miami. So I found out that my wife and I have a little one on the way due in December...which also means traveling will probably stop for a good while. I'm debating on switching to an x100v.
    It pains me to think about getting rid of my current setup (XT4 plus a couple lenses) but I just want to have a camera with me at all times with my kid growing and having a larger camera body with me seems a bit cumbersome.
    It's not like I can't ever shoot landscapes again with an x100V. How would you say this WCL handled shooting landscapes? It seems like you enjoyed it pretty well after watching this vid.

  • @redisred

    Thanks for this, always enjoy your beautiful videos! Your experience mirrors mine pretty much with the X100V and the WCL. It’s pretty darn good. Not quite as good at the edges as the normal lens at like f2, but improves quickly as the aperture goes down. The TCL is something that I have a more mixed feeling about. It’s a lot bigger, kind of goofy looking tbh, and I do see a hit in image quality more with it. However, I love 50mm and I love the X100V, so it’s worth carrying around sometimes. It’s only a little worse than the 35 f2 to me, so it’s tolerable. Honestly I wish they somehow made an f2.8 version that was the same size as the wcl, but I doubt that’s really possible! If these things were a little easier to get on and off I’d be more enthusiastic about them as well, the screw mounting is quite fiddly.
    Last thing, a tip I recently discovered: a normal 49mm lens cap fits the back of these converters perfectly, and sticks on much better than the weird little cap it comes with. I just got cheap ones on Amazon and it’s been a much better experience.

    Great video and photos. Some notes on WCL and TCL:
    I use the WCL on my X100T as my 28mm so far. Not bad size/weight quality for a 28 f/2! But it shades the built in flash somewhat, which is a shame with this great fill-flash camera (leaf shutter 1/4000 sync etc)
    Had the TCL previously, and really enjoyed the use case in direct harsh sunlight with an external EF-X20 as fill flash. That feature and ability to get smooth faces (and still some background separation) even in harsh light cannot be matched with another 50mm equiv setup from Fuji, or with a Summicron on an M for that matter, because of slow sync speeds. Still ended selling it and buying something else. It is too bulky and alters the X100-experience fundamentally.

    Just get the v.1 of this lens. It's way cheaper (especially used) and there is no difference in glass. You just have to manually switch the camera setting to correct for distortion.

      Yes me too. Got it for less than $100 used. Nice and sharp (and much less distortion than the Leica Q btw). The only thing. I have no hood. And when light comes from the side, the flare is terrible. White and milky. Any suggestions for a cheaper hood, than the original Fuji? Tried some screw mount ventilated hoods, but all of them made the corners dark. And the Hauge hood I have for the x100v won't fit the converter lens...

    After using the WCL for almost a year it's a nice thing to have. It helps balance the camera by giving your left hand someplace to hold. The only negative I've noticed shooting in cities is it seems to have some pretty bad distortion of buildings. So it's great for tight scenes just beware if you like to shoot city architecture. Nice video

    I'm having the hardest time choosing between the X100v with both adapters, giving me the full prime range you need. Or the X-E4, which I would have the 18 f/2, the 27 f2.8, and the 50 f/2. I've watched those videos of yours multiple times. The x100v always comes up in a sense of having the full package as is, and if i want to use the adapters, they're there.

    • @venom2k2
      @venom2k2 2 года назад +1

      You also get weather resistance if you buy the WR kit or attach a different filter. The x100v also has an in build ND filter. Having a large variety of lenses is a big plus for the xe4. Really depends on what you need. The XE4 makes more Sense but who are we fooling? The x100v is just beautiful

      @@venom2k2 that all makes sense to me. As a dad primarily documenting family and hobby shooting at best, the compactness of the x100v as a complete package is the main selling point. though beautiful, on top of what you mentioned, it also has the silent leaf shutter and the built in flash. I know it's not the best flash, but having one is better than nothing.

    • @venom2k2
      @venom2k2 2 года назад +2

      @@coryirvin6651 yeah, that is what draws me to the x100v as well. But if I remember correctly the xt30 and even xe4 are more Compact but of course with a lens attached it becomes a different story. Put a 23mm f/2 on the xe4 and you are good to go. You also get the chance of using the beautiful 35mm f/1.4 and for nice portraits the 50mm f/2. I'd get the xe4, to be honest.

      @@venom2k2 Great points, and that's where i've been most of this camera-research journey. I like having the lens options. I can always throw the 18 f/2 on the xe4 if i want it to be compact. I held the xt30 and it felt terrible, but the x-t20 had surprisingly better ergos.

    I've been using the WCL on my X100F for a while now and really enjoy it. The only problem I have with it is that it protrudes so much and if you need to use the flash, you'll get a shadow on your photo. I usually don't use flash on the X100F, but sometimes it's needed. The moment you said this video was sponsored and that they sent you the lens I knew this was gonna be a BS review. You even said previously that you didn't enjoy this lens but now conveniently you all of a sudden are? You're just selling us more camera gear that we or may not need. I get it man. Do what you gotta do to make that money but it's sad to know I can't trust your opinion anymore. You lost a subscriber. This isn't the first time you have done this either which sucks because I enjoy your photography and even most of your videos but lately its basically just been commercials for MPB and Moment.

    • @benjhaisch
      @benjhaisch  2 года назад +4

      Hey Manuel, you may have misinterpreted me here. The video isn’t sponsored, they sent the conversion lens over for another comparison video [at my request] and I decided to make a follow up video specifically about it because I’d always been curious about it myself. I’d never used it before, but just assumed the quality was poor from other experiences with conversion lenses. This changed when I actually used it. I make videos based on what I personally find interesting and frankly don’t make nearly enough money on this platform to go and purchase most of these things on my own to satisfy my own curiosity, so I do rely on loaned or provided gear from companies that I have relationships with to help support the videos for me.
      TLDR: This video isn’t sponsored and I made it out of my own curiosity. :)

      @@benjhaisch I agree in part with both. For me it was just odd when you hold the camera and converter combination i immediately thought "Thats a Leica Q size right there" and from that moment, that converter seemed useless to me.... The Leica Q is basically the same size but its 1.7 and its full frame ?! For me there is just the price difference left in justifying something like that... and even then..... at this point get an xt3 with a 28 equivalent lens if you cannot afford or want the Leica Q.
      So in my mind, there is no possible way for someone to justify a product like that.

      @@martinrumfeld8593 yeah, I get that. I think the point for me is the modularity, especially for someone who doesn't have the budget for both or just likes to have a super compact setup at 35mm but doesn't mind expanding to the size of another "regular" camera at times to accommodate the 28mm. If you want to use 28mm at all times and never the 35mm equiv, this probably isn't the best idea for sure, but for what it is, I was impressed by it.
