I've had that thought some time ago, but as I don't fool around that often (also drifting on public roads is punishable by 1 year license suspension and 1500 euros fine) and I didn't want to ruin my daily, I installed an LSD. Welded diff in my experience gives the best predictability when you want to drift, but 365 days a year can be a chore, especially when there is no snow the past few winters. Ideally you would have a nice garage with a car lift so that you can have a welded and an open diff, that you can swap anytime you want.

Dailying a welded diff can be a headache, but it’s my headache so i liked it. The steering at first at low speeds is definitely heavier.. but sideways is so much better.

The inner wheel wants to turn faster when you take a corner with an open diff
I also have a compact and weld the diff, no complains, its a lot of fun to drive in rain and is very predictable, you can also do donuts very easy.
With winter tires the hopping is a lot less i also drive/drift the car daily in the winter

I have been street drifting for like 2 years now, started with a 328i E36 with (rather worn) factory LSD, drove it for maybe 8 weeks with a welded diff and then I put back in the worn out LSD again.
Well, I only do drifting when the streets are wet to be fair but in those conditions I prefer a proper LSD by far.
I've always had cheap tyres in the rear with a rather high pressure. With the LSD I drove around the streets and just by flooring it in a turn the rear came out smoothly. That wasn't the case with the welded diff. People always think that you are going sideways all the time with a welded diff, which isn't the case. Actually my car didn't want to go sideways as easy as with the rather worn LSD. With the welded diff I always needed a clutch kick and then the rear kicked out suddenly and massively. Whilst sideways, it also was extremely sensitive, every little gas input influenced the drift angle directly which sometimes was a bit of a nervous behaviour. But it was ok as soon as it was sideways, just getting sideways was a bit sketchy and risky sometimes with stock steering angle, I spun out often in the beginning with the welded diff.
Well, the 2.8 is the second most powerful engine in the E36 and as I said I am only drifting on wet roads but in this scenario, a proper LSD gets you the best out of both worlds and I am very happy with my decision to buy a second, shorter ratio LSD and two sets of rebuild/upgrade kits for 40% lockup. Unfortunately in newer BMWs like E46, E39 etc there aren't LSDs available from the factory (except M cars), so I might need to weld the diff, too if I drive such car during the next winters but this will cause more stress for the drivetrain and the whole car and a very compromised daily driving. So if you don't want to have a rattling, shaking, tyre skipping shit box low budget drift missile car but a "class" higher, definately see a proper LSD as an option I would suggest.

@@ThePCJakub Hi, well it is not that hard to get but they are pretty expensive unfortunately. Depending on the size of the case (168mm in 316i - 320i, 188mm in 323i - M3 3.0l or 210mm in M3 3.2l (at least in Europe)) and gear ratio they go for like 400€ to over 1000€ in Germany. But it helps that you could order a LSD directly from BMW as an option in all older BMWs until E36 and E34. You couldn't order a LSD in E46 or E39 for example, only the M models still had one. So for those "newer" BMWs LSDs are a lot more expensive since they weren't available from factory. E36 LSDs are expensive but not as expensive as LSDs for cars that didn't get any LSD from the factory.
For example if you want a LSD for your modern 235i BMW you would have to pay like 2000€+ for an aftermarket part and not like 600€ for a used factory E36 one.
So I think if you have an E36, maybe not a 318 Compact but a sedan or coupe with nice 6 cylinder engine that does cost a bit, you should totally look for a LSD and invest the money. It makes the car sooo much more fun and capable. But be aware that the LSDs are like 25 years old nowadays and most likely worn out. So you can buy a rebuild kit for around 200€ or even an upgrade kit which increases the factory 25% lockup. I bought a 40% rebuild/upgrade kit, so you can get a real racing-like LSD for well under 1000€, not that bad.

    • @peterm3861
      @peterm3861 9 месяцев назад +1

Another advantage of non welded diff and disadvantage of welded diff accordingly is the fact when you get stuck in mud or in snow. The rotational speed of one of the wheel will facilitate the process of getting away, because the car will have more grip. It's all about the rotation when it comes to the dilemma welded or non welded diff. Btw, Fahre do you plan making another episode of your videos with your cars owned so far? And how is this car conditionwise? In a couple of months will it pass MOT? How do you think from a closer look? You said it in a video when you bought it that in a couple of months it needs to pass MOT so you should get prepared fixing maybe stuff.

problem is not 100% same speed, problem is 100% same speed all the time with welded diff.
best for drifting is lsd with plates system (M performance, OS Giken... ), provides lock smiliar to what welded diff when locking.
Helicolidal lsd's (like quaiffe atb) are very soft in their locking, more 'time attack' oriented.
edit : plate system diffs are also (much) more expensive to maintain VS helicoidal system.
