My I also inform those who have sons. Not only do college students not use top sheets, but I know from my son and my speaking with other mom’s of boys..they sleep “ON TOP” of those quilts! What does that mean? It means that the center of those quilts get very worn and the thread gets broken from the weight of his body and his twist and turns! This is very hard on those hand quilted quilts. Because I and my family are hand quilters, not sure machine quilted quilts would hold up better..maybe. When my son brought the quilt to me, a few years late and asked if his favorite quilt could be repaired. I laughed and said son that quilt has served its purpose..choose another❤❤(KH)

The top sheet thing is a huge deal for me. First off, ick! You know they’re not washing the quilt or blanket every week, but there’s no sheet to protect it?! Also I recently stayed in a hotel with a big puffy comforter in a duvet-and no top sheet. And the room was taking forever to cool off. I can’t sleep with no covers at all but the comforter was far too warm. What are they thinking???

We did not have risers under our dorm beds years ago, and the frames had metal springs. This meant there was just a mattress on top, making for a low bed overall. Yes, they were against the wall. A really wide quilt would have been a real issue. The one I made for myself that summer worked great. The only problem I ever encountered was the year that I decided to have satin sheets. My friends would slide all over when they came and sat on it to visit.

I quit using top sheets several months ago. When traveling Europe last December I became aware that top sheets are not standard there. They prefer to use a duvet cover instead. After I returned home I learned that it is a growing trend in the US now. Having been a top sheet user my entire life my brain needed to understand why this is custom for some and a growing trend here. The answer was simple yet surprising. Top sheets can restrict your feet. As a tall person with now liberated feet, I'll never go back to top sheets. :).

Only you can make talking about the perfect size for college dorm quilts interesting. 😉 I have to have a top sheet as well. It’s kind of like not wearing underwear…for me anyway. 😂

If you put your label on the bottom of the quilt, you”ll always know which edge is the top/bottom at a glance!

I am feeling better about the Lutheran World Relief quilts we make at 60x80 inches with a recycled bedsheet backing. Still bound and made with love but made for one.

I'm with you - I cannot for the LIFE of me understand why people don't use the top sheet!! It helps our quilt/blanket/comforter from getting dirty dang it!

Another great thought process for encouraging recipients to really use and love their quilts! “It’s why we make the quilts to begin with!” ❤❤❤

I’m so grateful you made this video! My grandson (first grandchild) is going off to college next month. I mentioned making him a quilt-probably not by next month-but was concerned about measurements. I love all your recommendations! Thank you so much!

Living up north, the rule of thumb is to dress in layers so you can remove or add according to the temperature. That’s what a top sheet is for, I sleep with a top sheet, lightweight blanket, and then the comforter on top. That way I can throw off as many layers as I want to reach the right degree of comfort.

Now I want risers on my bed! Senior citizen here, with storage issues. I could organise my shirts and fabrics and store them beautifully.Thank you for another great topic. 🇨🇦👚
