Dude Northwestern just recently did a renovation to their arena and made it a lot nicer for their size. The outside might be ugly, but the inside is perfectly fine for their team and the size of their school.

Much as I like the Xfinity Center it will never quite compare to Cole Field House. I bet I saw between 100-125 games there. Whenever the Terps played a big-time rival at Cole like Duke, UNC, NC State (when they had David Thompson) it was IMHO one of the most electrifying venues in college basketball history!! There were times my ears would ring for a couple hours after the game ended--that's how loud it would get--I mean ROCK CONCERT loud!! So many awesome memories--I still miss it!!
Williams Arena THE BARN can be such an amazing venue to catch a game.. problem is we (I say that as a gopher alumni) haven’t been relevant in years. When the gophers are good, that place is rocking. Really tough place to play for opponents in that kind of environment
Carver-Hawkeye Arena has exterior roof support so that it can have a clean looking ceiling on the inside. It's actually a quite brilliant design in that regard.
Man I never realized how steep and intimidating Nebraska arena is , that would be a great advantage if they could ever get a winning tradition in hoops going. Overall gotta say good job ranking these arenas…
It gets very loud and intimidating in "The Vault". Fantastic environment and not nearly as drab as this guy makes it out to be. He has no idea what he's talking about. I highly suggest you see a game in it if you ever get an opportunity.
So to be fair w Ohio State and Penn State. I don’t think those arenas were built for basketball specifically. Those are 2 huge universities. I think almost 60K at both schools. Think about graduations and how many people have to fit in there.

Love my Kohl Center. I grew up on the Field House, will always miss it, but the Kohl Centers amazing. I saw Bucky take down #1 Duke there back in 2010 & so many more great games. Great vibe. On Wisconsin!
Breslin has a second double court in the lower level. When Izzo came to MSU he found a set of windows up high looking down on the court. it was a meeting room. He had it changed a bit and it's his main office. you can see the practice courts behind him with many interviews he does.
Good grief…. Have you ever watched a game at Assembly Hall? There are no more than 6000 decent seats in the entire building. Watching the game from the nose bleed seats is awful. Shooting background is bed too. The rest of you ranking is logical, your #1 is laughable.
Mackey is way better than Assembly Hall and it's not even close. I'd put Assembly Hall at 5 behind Nebraska, MSU, Michigan, Illinois. The only thing good about Assembly Hall is seeing it empty by half time and feeling like you are playing a game of Candy Land.

Having worked the last 15 years of my professional career in Assembly Hall at Indiana University, I have to concur with your choice of number one. One of my favorite tee shirts of all time: Spending an Evening with 17,400 of my closest friends. In the past decade, major renovations and improvements have been made. Including a 360 degree playback which was installed with a gift from Mark Cuban, who graduated from IU. Plus IU allocates proportionately the most seats to students in the Big Ten.
When the Gophers are good and the competition is solid, the Barn is definitely in the top 3 with Purdue and Indiana. It's been a while, but this season is turning some heads... we'll see!

Bro you obviously havent been to all these arenas if you have Assembly hall over mackey. If this was during the knight/Keady area i could understand. But not nowadays. I go to iu vs purdue every single year at mackey and at assembly hall. Iu has mostly theater seats, which encourage people to stay seated. They do not sell alcohol. And 90% of the people that go are senior citizens still trying to hold on to the glory days of the past. Its good if you want to watch a basketball game like your at a movie theater. But, if your going to base it off of most hostile environments and ear shattering crowd decibels, then the experience at mackey is far better. Its mostly bench seats packed to the max with intoxicated purdue fans that stand the whole time and scream because sitting offers no room for your ass because the numbers on the bench are about 8 inches apart. Literally breaks the sound barrier! I understand the history of IU being known as a hard place to play, but its not comparable to purdue anymore. And if you haven't experienced the difference, go to both places and tell me im wrong...
IU is still a hard place to play, but Mackey is still up there, both of the Hoosier Schools are very well deserving of the top 2 rankings, he just thinks that IU is better, you don’t have to agree with him, but I will.
Pinnacle Bank arena is one of the coolest venues I’ve seen a game at. All of the upper decks feel like they’re looking directly down on the court and the game time environment is electric. You should check out some game time photos/videos instead of the boring photos you used.
It’s a nice place. Updated and very comfortable. Problem is atmosphere sucks. Even when we are good it’s just quiet. Our fans don’t get up for basketball like we do football
As a die hard Michigan fan who has attended many game the atmosphere is good if it’s a close game or they play msu or osu. Or else they might have one of the shittest atmospheres as it’s so quiet. I’m one of those quiet fans so I am the part of the problem
People from Wisconsin are happy if they can warm their feet when they get inside. Sorry people but the state of Indiana knows what makes a great place to play basketball. If Butler played in the Big Ten the state would have the top 3.
The problem with these lists is that you almost have to wait for team quality to go up before you can really gage the noise. This year NW at Iowa will be lacking in noise due to the teams cleaning house. The solution is to probably follow Caitlin Clark everywhere.
Penn State’s arena (Bryce Jordan Center) is more known for concerts. Many Penn State basketball fans still wish they play at Rec Hall (where volleyball is played).
These lists, like the football stadiums, have almost nothing to do with the facility brick and mortar itself and more to do the fanbase, history, attendance, etc.

Wisconsin and Ohio State's arenas are dual purpose, basketball and hockey. To be able to satisfy both sports at the same time, there has to be compromises. I have been to Michigan, Purdue, and Wisconsin's arena's. Michigan and Purdue built just for basketball, and yes, probably better then Wisconsin. But not by very much. None of these arena's in the Big Ten are dumps by any stretch.
I've been on the floor for multiple games there - one of the best memories I have is walking up the steps onto that elevated floor - it is absolutely awesome
Idk man I think pinnacle is pretty cool man. Seems very nice and comfortable. Cool exterior and in the bar district but still nice and comfy inside. Seat choice was amazing there and every seat is a good view. I’m a fan but biased
The one thing you didn't mention about Northwestern is that they have seats behind the posts. This is a 1930s field house. I got stuck sitting behind said posts and did not see anything from midcourt to the south basket. Sad all the way around.

What I never have understood about Assembly Hall is the camera angles. The action is from a higher vantage point that almost anywhere else. Did someone decide that would be better or was it overlooked in the design?
The fake Assembly hall in Bloomington is a terrible place to see a game. Upper seats are too far away from the floor and to get to them it’s like climbing a mountain and the sight lines are terrible.

I was there pre-renovation and it was very intimidating for the visiting team. You felt like you were right on the court!

I believe New Mexico St. & Bradley (Field House) used to play on elevated floors. Back in the day both were in the Missouri Valley Conference.

What I never have understood about Assembly Hall is the camera angles. The action is from a higher vantage point that almost anywhere else. Did someone decide that would be better or was it overlooked in the design?

The fake Assembly hall in Bloomington is a terrible place to see a game. Upper seats are too far away from the floor and to get to them it’s like climbing a mountain and the sight lines are terrible.
That Minnesota barn looks like the barn in Des Moines Iowa no longer there I don’t think as they built Wells Fargo arena
