How to record in digital format on older component camera camcorders

- Tape-based recording to camcorders are pretty much extinct now and digital capture is the future - using a digital capture system like the Focus FS-H200 or Atomos systems like the Atomos Ninja is one way.
The Sony Fx1 is wonderful and the quality from the HD capture is outstanding, especially viewed through component out. However, I've been wanting something to capture component to HDMI and I think I've found it! The way I'm doing it is through firewire capture at this time, as shown in the video.
So with the older HDV format camcorders like the Sony FX-1, what's one way to extend the life of a wonderful camera like this?
This is my old-school fix for digital media capture and recording. It is not as efficient as the newer technology but it's a wonder that it does the job from back then.
I'm looking to update to an Atomos system which will be great for the Sony FX-1 and my Sony A6500, hopefully soon.

I use a Canon XHA1 with a Focus HD-4, similar to your setup but it has a Hard Drive in it. Works Great.

Thank you... Luckily enough I have been able to find good secondhand DV CAM tapes here near UK on eBay for low cost.... I also connect my DSR 570 (Recently acquired..) to a WinTv card in a desktop which captures the composite signal.. At a push I could carry old laptop with Firewire and capture that way too.. but a dedicated portable Firewire recorder would be good..
I now use z1 and Firestore FS 4 which works perfectly with the HDV.. Luckily my video light battery which has the right voltage 13.5V and a lead connects to the FS4.. Looking forward to see how you get on with Component out record.. A Ninja would be great to have..
Hi.. For DSR 570, 500, 450 bodies where deck is broken.. I discovered that when I attach a Sony Handy cam that has DV in and setting the Handy Cam to VCR mode pressing Rec on the 450ws actually activates Rec DV in on Handy Cam..
If anyone ever find a way to convertí the firewire signal to HDMI, please ley me know

And yes 1080 isnt going anywhere for at least another decade, 4k streaming isnt going be widely available for a long time.
What kind of fluid head can be used with this camera? I recently purchased the hvr-z1u for my beginner camcorder and am hoping to have some good results. Just wanting to see what you may recommend to use for a fluid head with the camera. Thank you in advance for whatever information you are willing to share!
hello. i recently had bought the fs-h200 and im having some issues with recording. every time i click RECORD the red icon pops up but it doesnt capture anything. do you have any ideas with this issue? would be dope if you got back to me
Try redo the settings. I haven't used it in a long time but I do remember having same issue. I believe it's just creating a thumbnail like info for the clip but not actually recording. Also have to use remove option before taking out the compact flash or it can ruin clips. Check the manual. Here is a link to it.

Hi there, you can get a digital recorder like an atomos syste.. older versions with humidity support would work fine with a component to hdmit converter like avermedia. Scroll through comments below. Rudedogflicks said it works for him. You can also purchase an older digital system that can record in firewire connection but its not that great for current tech. The atomos system seems to be the way to go. I'm hoping to work on a video soon for my atomos and avermedia system soon, just got both to play with but work is keeping me busy.
So these camcorders dont have a built in sd card slot? the specs say it supports a Memory Stick Pro, does it?
The Memory Stick Pro is for still photos only
The problem I am having is the output on my Z1U is firewire, not USB so I am limited to what is available.
Photojunky's Drone Zone Vlog firewire broken or output issue? I always felt the component out gave sharper picture for the output but that's just me when I'm looking at the video connected directly to the tv.
RecordLifeMedia no it works fine. The problem is finding a storage device that takes firewire and not USB.

Did you ever move forward with the Ninja2? If so, what did you use for the component to HDMI conversion?
rudedogflicks I have not tried it yet, brought the smallhd focus so now I'm resaving to purchase it. Thee avermedia component system is what I am thinking of using. It's in the affiliate link in the description. That is what I was planning on using for portability.
I'm not sure the avermedia is going to work out. I picked up a used Ninja 2 recently and tried the avermedia converter. I only played with the setup for a few minutes but while the Ninja detects the avermedia as an input, it doesn't go into "Monitor mode". I didn't have a drive to try recording but will try that soon and see if I can get monitor mode working. Might just be a setting somewhere. If not, I'll look for a different converter. I've read that some folks have had good results with StarTech, but it is a bit pricier at ~$110.

OK, yep it was just a setting. Toggle the input formats and you end up on the ones that the Ninja can detect from the Avermedia. I haven't done any production testing yet other than just basic but the Ninja accepts and records 1080p 29.97 from the Avermedia. Picture quality looks pretty awesome (again, though on very limited testing.)
Thanks again, your video set me on the path on looking for a Ninja. I originally wanted to resurrect this camera with a used FireStore, but I think the Ninja will extend its life by another couple of years.

adjelaj use avermedia component to HDMI to connect the fx1 to the stomos. In the replis I have with rudedogflicks, he used it and it works great.

Would you sell the hs200?
I would but I'd say it's a better option to go with an Atomos kit with an adapter to convert to hdmi.

Learn to shoot video first by starting with some basics like don't play music in the background when you are speaking that distracts from what you are trying to teach the viewer.
