8BitDo Retro Receiver for Sega Genesis won't work on Atari 2600. I tried it and it doesn't work! Only works on Sega Genesis. I don''t have ColecoVision, Commodore 64, and Sega Master System to test it. If anyone has the following consoles and the receiver for Sega Genesis. Please reply this comment with an update.
Dude your reviews are always Great! Honest, practical, and straight to the point. Your the only tech channel I subscribe to anymore. Most tech sites seem like they are bought out with free merchandise to review. They love everything. Plus you are a true retro gamer like myself. Your the only other channel I have seen Krixzz products on. Keep up the awesome work and thanks again!
After receiving mine. I tested it on Switch and PC on any type of game that does not require an analog stick (Vs Fighting, 2D Platform, Beat'em Up, Shoot'em up). This controller is wonderful. The touch is very nice. The grip is perfect. The feeling is very good. The buttons respond well. The buttons L and R are well arranged. Special mention for the D-Pad, it does not hurt the thumb, special attacks, and combos come out perfectly. This is the best controller for games that do not require an analog stick. If you need to play with the 2 analog sticks, then take the "SF30 Pro Gamepad".
Sega won’t work with 8bitdo to map buttons on their software, having just licenced retrobit to make genesis replica controlers. This is a very solid review. Thanks a lot.
Looks like there has been a firmware update! From 8BitDo's website: "M30_Fimware_V1.10 SELECT + DPAD_UP = DPAD SELECT + DPAD_LEFT= LEFT JOYSTICK SELECT + DPAD_RIGHT = RIGHT JOYSTICK SELECT + DPAD_DOWN = Swap A-B,X-Y (Only in Switch) Press and hold the above key combinations for 5 seconds, red LED will blink to indcate when successful. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Firmware update instruction 1.Download the firmware file first from support.8bitdo.com/ 2.Press and hold L+R+START buttons on the controller to put it on its update mode. LED on the top will blink in red. 3.Connect the controller to your Windows or macOS via the USB-C cable. 4.Click on “USB Upgrade” on your device, search for M30_Fimware.dat in the pop-up window and run it; 5.Un-plug the gamepad when the upgrade process is done, then restart it before using. "
With this update, will this solve the mapping issue for Genesis games on the Switch? I finally purchased a brand new Switch Lite and bought the 8bitdo SN30 controller, and I also wanted to buy this controller for those Genesis games on this handheld...but still hesitant because of this issue. Sort of a deal-breaker for me.
Great overview, Lon. Some things you didn't cover but wanted to add: Lots of stuff about the 2.4G version: L and R mirror Z and C on the Genesis, so if you LIKE the SNES layout for Street Fighter (what kind of animal are you??) you can have it. Also, the 2.4G has a regular Micro USB, not a USB-C connector for some reason. It does work wired like the Bluetooth ones, so you can use it on your PC. The Bluetooth version works with the 8bitdo Retro Receiver for SNES, and it maps buttons directly X -> X, Y->Y and so on. Z mirrors L and C mirrors R. But as you know the SNES controller has its button labels reversed from Sega, and so you need to have X -> Y and A -> B. You can do that, too - just put the Bluetooth controller in XInput mode, and voila. X and Y are reversed, and A and B are reversed. And the buttons are now perfectly laid out for Street FIghter II. The ultimate SNES fighting game controller. It's not a perfect experience on the SNES for some games, though. In games where Y is a button you want to hold (to run in Super Mario World, to fire in Contra III) pressing just the A button to jump can be tricky. So there's a compromise. But I think it's worthwhile, and you can adjust your grip to make it work. To me it's worth it to have the Sega-styled D-pad. To someone else it may not be.
Excellent. Thank you! You’re the only reviewer I have seen reviewing this controller that mentioned the fact that it has turbo that I was not aware of.
Love your show. I've watched like 5 reviews already because I'm really exited to be getting one or two of these but you mention 'its good to have the buttons where the original Megadrive had them' which is kinda obvious but your the first I've heard say that in a review. Like most people would b used to using the SNES style ones if there using 8Bitdo ones so my hat goes off to you mate! Just a lil thing but good 2 hear!!!!! Great review as usual!!!!
Probably, but 2.4g also seems to interfere more with other devices from what I've experienced. Cordless phones for example seem to also be popular with the 2.4g band.
I have both. I use the Bluetooth version with my SNES (because the D pad is awesome) and the 2.4G with the Genesis. To me they feel identical but I'm sure there is a measurable difference between 2.4 and BT. To me it's worth the savings if you just want to use it on the Genesis, even if the BT happens to be faster (unlikely).
@@7MBoosted no I mean because what a coincidence that you looked at a sega genesis controller review on the same day as ReviewTechUSA uploaded his sega genesis mod video, where he used the same controller (that's how I got here).
While the manual doesn't show the full instructions, I was looking at reviews on Amazon and on one of the reviews 8Bitdo responded to, there are apparently ways to change your button settings for the Bluetooth version. Hold Left + Select for 5 seconds = Use D-Pad as Left Thumbstick Hold Up + Select = Use D-Pad as D-Pad Hold Right + Select = Use D-Pad as Right Thumbstick Hold Down + Select = Switch A & B and switch X & Y mapping positions Can someone let me know if this works?
Some Genesis games had different button layout option presets which might be a temporary fix for the button assign issues. Streets of Rage, for instance, allows you to choose different button layouts in the option menu.
Sounds like they did good work with this controller. Now I want to see how the Sega backed ones from Retro-bit compare. A bit of a bummer about the Switch issues.
I just want to say that I remember playing Gundam Wing Endless Duel in the year 2000 via ZSNES on a dinosaur PC. If you're still downloading/purchasing SEGA or Nintendo compilations in 2022, you're just a sucker.
The RetroPad32 + USB Input Module should allow connecting the 2.4g version to anything via USB, including a Nintendo Switch plus allowing re-mapping the buttons.
The original Sega con controller was the 1st home controller that simplified button mashing for Street Fighter. Having all the punch and kick buttons in line like the arcade console was great.
Hey Lon, just commenting on the most recent somewhat related video. Can you do another Lag test on shield with RetroArchs new "Run ahead" feature? I've fiddled with it a bit and it really helps as far as older consoles/arcade consoles go with input lag!
It would work wonderfully for smash I wonder if you can hold down the select button and swap the d-pad with the analog sticks just like the Super Nintendo controller I have from them pushing one-way access the right stick pushing another way makes it act as the left stick and pushing it the Third Way makes it act as the d-pad
Does anyone know why these are significantly less expensive than the 8BitDo controllers for the Super NT? I don’t recall SNES and Genesis controllers having any real different functionality, just layout/design.
It looks like they did not make the SN30 controller with a 2.4G variant. So they are selling that bluetooth controller with a bundled retro receiver on Analogue's site. The M30 2.4 does not use bluetooth so they saved themselves from having to purchase a bluetooth license plus whatever additional manufacturing costs go into that implementation.
Only way to connect it to the wii is using the 8bitdo classic reciever and I tried that, but it freezes up homebrew and just doesn't accept input in GX. Tried it on wii u and it will connect, but after a min Itl start registering random inputs or just disconnect
I would want to map CBZY to ABXY, and then X and A to the shoulders. Also have a 3-button switch mode for playing the Sega Genesis Classics (ABC to YBA). @8BitDo if you’re reading this, can we please have these two maps in a firmware update? Well, ideally everyone would just get to map their own buttons, but that might be too much to ask.
11:02 wow, is that Truxton? I am tempted to get one of these joypads for ios/ipad os use only, to carry around in my bag. Not sure is small enough for pockets, maybe the ”zero” joypad is better for that.
I notice you praised the left-right consistency, with my old Genesis controllers when speedrunning I have always found a huge sensitivity either side of UP, so that combined with the loose/old face I often end up holding steady on up and suddenly getting a diagonal movement. Does this controller get that too? I guess it must be really hard to make something that's dancy and sensitive without that sort of problem.
Hi Lon, excellent review as usual. I've got the modkit for the snes controller. It maps to different systems when I hold start + ? button (switch, 8bitdo, pc, mac). You sure it doesn't have a similar function for the switch? For me, holding start + Y when turning the modkit snes controller on maps to switch.
So what do you suggest I do, I want a wireless controller for my sega mini and a wireless controller for my snes, do I buy 1 receiver for both consoles or do I buy 2 receivers 1 for each console and if I wanted 4 controllers 2 for each console do I only need 2 receivers or should I get 4 just in case
Do you know if it have compatibility modes for 3-button and/or Sega Master System? (Some SG games - and SMS games - do not work at all with 6 button controller)
There's lots of lost input in the MegaDrive classic collection in Steam, however works flawlessly in Retroarch with Blastem core, still haven't tried in my MegaDrive, I'm thinking on getting the M30 2.4ghz for the MD, my pc engine one performs better than any Bluetooth solution.
Sorry, that adapter instead of using it for that control, I can use it for some headphones, I have a Genesis 2, and I would like to see if it can work the same as for Genesis 1 with its 3.5 input for headphones, I would appreciate your answer and I greet you from Mexico.
Does it occur to you that you can change the buttons in the game itself to match the genesis. That being for the sega genesis collection on switch of course.
Well you can use this one also for SATURN on the PC for emulation... it also has 2 should buttons so its more like a mix between GENESIS and Saturn. Maybe they also will release a wireless Saturn Adapter too for the Saturn,
1. i think the 8bitdo description said the controller was LAG FREE on input lag, but your review video said the input lag is pretty high. im confused. can you please explain ? i hate input lag. 2. also, is there input lag when connecting with the USB cord directly? 3. will the 2.4ghz have less input lag than the bluetooth version?
@Timothy Vreeland not sure on that one. 8bit do's description says LAG FREE on their controllers, and I've seen input lag tests on PS4 controllers vs wired PS4 controller, and it came out the same. In my personal opinion, it's a mystery that requires mechanical research much like the theories on lithium batteries and how to properly charge them. Technology is weird sometimes. Personally, I don't think Sony would Rely on Bluetooth wireless if they knew there was input lag involved. Hell, I read that even wired controllers have input lag to an extent. So technically, everything has input lag. It's a technical mess lol.
@Leo DS let's just keep it simple then. So from what y'all are saying, the bottom line is that everything has some type of lag regardless. However, some are high and some are low. When it comes to controller lag due to being wireless, we generally do not feel it because it's far too low anyways. And USB wired vs wireless makes no difference, because usb cables still have lag since they are wired differently than retro controllers. Meaning the only absolute way to have ZERO lag is if I were playing an old Sega Genesis on a CRT because those controllers are wired differently. All this correct?
I bought the 2.4g version and I am having some crazy latency problems. It seems to be around 2 seconds of lag, which of course is completely unplayable. I'm guessing this is defective.
It could be defective, or you're getting too much interference from other devices using 2.4 GHz. Also, if you're playing certain Genesis games, then I believe that the six-button controller adds a significant amount of input lag, even when you use the Mode button to switch to three-button mode. That last bit doesn't apply to very many games, though.
I tried mine more after a full charge and they are still completely unusable. Maybe because we have 2.4g WiFi. I don't have this problem with my other 2.4g wireless controllers though. It sucks because I like the look and feel of the M30 and I was hoping to use them with my Analogue Mega Sg. There is no way to make them work when you get 6 seconds of latency!
Great video, with great detail on the controller and the bluetooth receiver. It's just a shame about the button mapping with it on the Switch. I hope they fix that problem or somehow with a computer let you remap them and save them to the controller.
the M30 2.4 gHz can be connected with PC and other machines/ source FAQs from 8bitdo : " On USB connection, it works with Switch, Windows 10 and Raspberry Pi. " 2.4 gHz has a better latency compare to Bluetooth (and I own both at one time, so I saw the difference....). no more Bluetooth controllers for me....
I'm supremely confused when they call one option Bluetooth while they call the other 2.4Ghz. Aren't they both Bluetooth? Can someone please enlighten me? I used to think the 2.4Ghz needed a WiFi network, but it doesn't.
They use the same frequencies but it’s a different technology. Think of it like those keyboard / mouse dongles. Not Bluetooth but use the same radio frequency.
It wasn't mentioned, but this controller is very uncomfortable. They decided to mold the back to a shape similar to the original sega controller, but then also shape it similar to a sega saturn controller. The combination of the two makes for a very poor grip and you will instantly feel pressure on your fingers and inner palm for even casual gameplay.
I think it would be easier rather than rely on a company not related to 8BitDo to update their game it would be more likely and easier for 8BitDo to release a PC/Mac utility to remap the buttons on the Switch mode and what you observe what button doing which function on the Switch. For instance jump in the Sega game may be mapped to Switch B but it was originally mapped to Genesis C because they deemed having jump mapped to Switch R to be too strange for gamers. It's that 4 button diamond layout vs the linear 6 button layout conflict. Then again you're changing how the controller works with non-Sega games. That might be a compromise some gamers are willing to make.
Hello to all ppl Did anybody tried to switch from 6 to 3 buttons mode on a megadrive console?it works?Thnx for time and give me time to check it with master system console Btw i have the sn30 for sega bluetooth reciver (don t swich to 3buttons mode),didn t like it how it look to be honest(the m30)
Using this with the Sega compilation on the Switch was one of my main reasons of ordering this. Noooooooooo. But I also wanted it for original hardware (or a Mega Sg if I get one, I don't know) and PC emulation. So 2 out of 3 is not bad for now.
I wasn’t impressed with mine. I sent it back to amazon because you couldn’t remap anything from Sega on the switch to match their genesis counterpart controls. Not so much the controller’s fault I suppose but it just seemed like a waste of money if I couldn’t use it the way I had intended
Hooded Claw About ms-pacman Yes maybe itsn t perfect ,i don t knoe about m30 ,but for sure the game works with 3buttons controler u have ro know ,also the golden axe 2 work only with 3buttons controler Dix u try to swith to 3buttons mode?it worked?

Great video, with great detail on the controller and the bluetooth receiver. It's just a shame about the button mapping with it on the Switch. I hope they fix that problem or somehow with a computer let you remap them and save them to the controller.
Lon, I really wish you would have made a reference to Classic Game Room while playing Truxton lol.
Press F to pay respects I Miss classic game room and undertow
Hey Lon, when are you going to review the GPD MicroPC?
Soon ! Just got it in and we’re working on it
Fantastic review!
The best and honest review 🎩 off .
Keep it up 👍
Does it work ok with the emulators on the ouya?
also great for street fighter since the 6 button layout is similar with the arcades
No shit
How's the longevity?
Does the 2.4 ghz version also work with pc via usb?
It does. I have it and it is detected by Windows 10 and works just fine.
@Mr.J I just got mine for fighting games for the switch and it works pretty good, it is comparable to hori's fight command fight pad.
No
Does it work with the Master System?
Hello! does compatibility with Ps4?
I just got one today, it pairs with my Samsung and can play game however, it paired with my laptop (Window 10) but not functioning at all
Will this work with emulation station on the raspberry pi?
No
Dang, the ps2 needs a Dongle like that, my og dual shock 2 died last year.
You can find second hand logitech ps2 wireless gamepads that are great
@@LemonRush7777 I have one, but it's kinda old, 8bitdo is making amazing stuff and I want one from them.
Wonderful review thanks!
Mapping is my biggest issue.
I always used C to jump on Genesis games and I can't do that on Sonic Mania.
the M30 2.4 gHz can be connected with PC and other machines/
source FAQs from 8bitdo : " On USB connection, it works with Switch, Windows 10 and Raspberry Pi. "
2.4 gHz has a better latency compare to Bluetooth (and I own both at one time, so I saw the difference....). no more Bluetooth controllers for me....
I wish that Nintendo would take a page out of steam's book and allow you to map the controls just by going into the home menu
@@LonSeidman Cheers. Love your work.
Keep up the great work
can i connect this to an xbox 360 i love the ultimate sega collection the xbox 360 d pad is horrible would be nice if this could connect to it.
I have 2 for my new mega sg console 😎
It wasn't mentioned, but this controller is very uncomfortable. They decided to mold the back to a shape similar to the original sega controller, but then also shape it similar to a sega saturn controller. The combination of the two makes for a very poor grip and you will instantly feel pressure on your fingers and inner palm for even casual gameplay.
No iOS support?? Blizzare??
It's Apple's fault. iOS 13 will be less restrictive.
can we play atari 2600 with this thing?
some comments say "No"
Yes
Hello to all ppl
Did anybody tried to switch from 6 to 3 buttons mode on a megadrive console?it works?Thnx for time and give me time to check it with master system console
Btw i have the sn30 for sega bluetooth reciver (don t swich to 3buttons mode),didn t like it how it look to be honest(the m30)
Using this with the Sega compilation on the Switch was one of my main reasons of ordering this. Noooooooooo.
But I also wanted it for original hardware (or a Mega Sg if I get one, I don't know) and PC emulation. So 2 out of 3 is not bad for now.
Gonna buy and use this for Smash!
Finally a wireless controller for your Atari 2600. 'Bout time.
Unfortunately this one doesn't work with the Atari 2600 according to John Hancock. Not sure about the 2.4G version
What a brand name ... 8 bit d'oh!! 🤪 🤣
I wasn’t impressed with mine. I sent it back to amazon because you couldn’t remap anything from Sega on the switch to match their genesis counterpart controls. Not so much the controller’s fault I suppose but it just seemed like a waste of money if I couldn’t use it the way I had intended
Yes this issue was noted in the video. Button mapping would be really helpful.
Latency is problem on the analogue sg, with games like ms pac man being unplayable as you can’t go up or down.
Hooded Claw
About ms-pacman
Yes maybe itsn t perfect ,i don t knoe about m30 ,but for sure the game works with 3buttons controler u have ro know ,also the golden axe 2 work only with 3buttons controler
Dix u try to swith to 3buttons mode?it worked?
Joe from Game Sack said it’s pronounced like doo.
No it's pronounced 'dwaoe'.
note it i will find it
Never heard anyone say this word out loud, but since the word DO is pronounced DUE, it would be 8bitDO, as in "I do eat tator tots".
This proves flat Earth! 🤪🤪🤪
