God, I miss playing this game. I had this friend from California who moved all the way out to where I live in Alabama when we found out that my first girlfriend (a girl I never got over) married this other guy, and I think he feared the worst given my personality (he would not have been wrong). He eventually moved back home in the summer of 2000, but not before a ton of great memories were made. This game takes me immediately back to those days.
It came out at the perfect time, imo. The 1999 NASCAR roster is THE roster, imo. The features of the game include ideas that inexplicably haven't shown up in NASCAR games since, such as unlockable legends (and genuine legends, at that), multiple game modes (none of which take themselves seriously, which works for this game; seeing NASCAR cars with giant scoops sticking out of their hoods _never_ gets old), a metric crap ton of hidden shortcuts in every map (something that seems to be missing from many Mario Kart-style games), and a fully-satisfying co-op experience (something hardware limitations prevented NASCAR sim games from, as 2-player would half the field...something I'm STILL salty about, btw). I can't imagine that ANY NASCAR game that's been developed since or in the future wouldn't be made instantly better by having unlockable legends (or, y'know... reasonable unlockables at all).
As much as I wanted a sequel (and Rumble Racing sucked, imo...), releasing with any other roster would always be a downgrade, imo. Dale Sr. and Adam Petty were still with us. Tony Stewart had just come off his rookie season. Dale Jr. and Matt Kenseth had run limited seasons (not to mention their Busch Series rivalry at the time), and were included in the game. The legends were well-chosen, and the sillier non-NASCAR options for cars (like the chicken truck) are all fun diversions. All the modes were worth playing, especially with a friend. And it came out before Rob moved back to California, so it's all linked to that specific friend for me, something that makes the whole thing indescribably special for me. "Look. Corn!" is still something he and I joke about when we speak these days.
Not enough people talk about this game.

Wouldn’t mind a remaster of this game. With today’s graphics, and a couple add ons, it could be really great.

The voice was great. "Sunday drivin' grandma." N.R. was one of the best NASCAR games ever released, no doubt.

one of my all time favorite arcade racers
edit: 7:56 it can also be played on the PS3, which is arguably the best way to do so. upscaled HD display and no memory cards when you're on PS3.

Such a fun fun game. Almost forgot about it. But then again how do you forget about a game that literally reimagined what a nascar game could be.
