  • I've been altering Precious Moments figurines into new characters using clay and paint. Many of you have asked what clay I use, and I'm here to answer that question. I'll show you the three different air-dry clays I use, walk you through their features, show you how they perform wet and dry, and tell you when, how, and why I use each one for different applications.

    Polymer clay smooths out just fine and just as easy, you just need to use alcohol or solvent.
    Of course it isn’t going to smooth out with just your finger, it’s a different type of clay. It’s made from pvc + a softener. You use the alcohol to smooth polymer out exactly how you use water to smooth out air dry.
    They both have their pros and cons and applications that work better. But both would also work equally as fine with something like this.

      That’s great information, thank you for sharing! I really like working with my fingers but I will look into polymer clay more and try the alcohol you suggested. Thanks!!

    Thank you for your hard won knowledge! I can't tell you how many times I've gone into a project blind and had to make each mistake myself. I love RUclips for this. I can learn from others' trial and error without doing so myself! I just went to an estate sale and got 45 precious moment ornaments from 80's and 90's for 10 bucks. They aren't my cup of tea, but I love art and figured I'd see what I could do. I love the goth look and they'll be cute that way!

    Very informative! Thanks for the additional tip on the varnish you use. I have two questions. Have you ever mixed another medium, say lace, to your clay for additional texture? Do you have a favorite paint to use on altered moments?

    • @chicaandjo
      @chicaandjo  4 месяца назад +3

      Thanks so much! I have never tried mixing another medium in for texture... what an interesting idea. Would love to hear more about how you plan to use that technique.

    This art style is amazing who ever thought of this is genius. I can’t wait to go buy stuff and start my own. I have a couple of questions. Does acrylic or enamel paint work best. Do you need to seal the piece before painting. You mentioned a sealer close to the start of the video. Can you add the porcelain sculpt on top of the regular and if so does the regular need to be completely dried. I am an art teacher and an artist myself (although I seem to have little time to do my own work). Excited to get materials and try this. I work a lot with ceramics and it would be impossible to add clay and refire the pieces. This came up on my facebook feed and every piece is I have seen are adorably incredible

      This idea has been around for years, but it's new to me. Isn't it fun?
      I use a multi-surface acrylic paint because it's water based and sticks great to the surface with no priming needed. The sealer I mention is for coating the paint/clay after the piece is done. (see link in description for both products)
      I have never tried adding one clay over another, but definitely wait until the first is completely dried, because they will shrink as they dry.
      So glad you found us on Facebook. Can't wait to see you share your creations in our group!

    I have 2 questions about the clay. First, how long do you have to let the clays dry before you can paint the pieces? Second, you mentioned that the model magic didn't stick to the figurines so when you use it to make things, how do you stick them to the piece, like the witch hat on the witch figurine? Do you use glue? If so what type is best?

    • @chicaandjo
      @chicaandjo  4 месяца назад +3

      The dry time depends on how thick the clay is. I leave small/thin pieces a few hours and large/thick pieces overnight. I use E6000 glue to attach the dried pieces. Thanks for watching!

    Would any of these be feasible for outdoor use?

    • @chicaandjo
      @chicaandjo  3 месяца назад +1

      I have not tested any of them outdoors, but my gut reaction would be no. MAYBE the Sculpey Porcelain, but definitely not the other two.
