This is the best brief available on this famous round the world cruise.. I started my military career in the Navy 69-76, my first home port was D&S piers Norfolk aboard the LEAHY, (DLG-16), then went submarines after a 70-71 Med cruise.

I am a retired ABE2 (AW) also a Golden Shellback from March of 2002. What a rich story about being initiated lol but these men, I can not out do ever. What a trip this must have been. Now we call being underway in the Pacific, RIMPAC due to the 'Pacific Rim' or Ring of Fire. As for my story I look back on and think, 'I did that?!' Would love to see any personal records that was kept by these shipmates. What an Epic tale~ When I was on the USS Stennis, She was home ported at North Island San Diego. There is much to consider now hearing this tale. How very cool!!

When T.R. soke of making "all failures, blunders, and shortcomings" apparent in time of peace and not of war, he undoubtedly had in mind the tragicomic epic of Imperial Russia's 2nd Pacific Squadron, which had bumbled its way around the world in 1905 only to be slaughtered by the much better prepared Japanese navy at the Battle of Tsushima. This essentially finished the Russo-Japanese War, the formal ending of which was overseen by T.R. himself
