i haven't read the books but i think it was portrayed better in the movies because if voldemort is so much weaker than dumbeldore it all makes no sense then dumbeldore can just “kill” him and then he needs a few years to come back and this gained time can be used to search for the horcruxes (i think it's important to have the villain always at least equal with the “mentor” character from the power ratio, like in star wars obi wan and vader) but that's just my opinion.

I don't know why people want a fixed ranking, it's obvious their level is pretty close and there is no way to say "this one is absolutely the best". Voldemort was easily in the same ballpark as dumbledore and grindelwald in terms of magical power. the only thing voldemort MIGHT fall short on is magical knowledge since he only really focused on magic that was at least somewhat related to combat or weakening his enemy/strengthening himself in some way, while dumbledore and grindelwald had more well rounded magical knowledge.

Grindelwald almost conquered Europe and he was super powerful, he is not to be taken lightly.

I think we read different books because as far as i remember they were evenly matched and Voldemort parried every attack that Dumbledore threw at him and even almost killed him if not for the phoenix. So if anything it was a tie and nobody whooped anyone.
Technically unknown if Grindelwald wielded elder wand in their fight. It’s widely accepted by fans to be the case but not directly stated. He was master if the elder wand at the time and Dumbledore became master of the elder wand after defeating him but technically that’s possible if he doesn’t use elder wand in their fight too. Just as Harry got elder wand mastery from Draco by wrestling Draco’s wand off Draco, not defeating elder wand wielding Draco. So defeating the master of the elder wand is enough to gain mastery, they don’t have to be using the elder wand.

I dont think we ever saw Dumbledore in his prime, we can only picture what was written in the books. Dumbledore defeated Grindewald, and the duel was described to be the most intense among any duels anyone has ever seen. He also became the only person Voldemort ever feared. Even when he was old, and he dueled Voldemort in the Ministry of Magic, I believe he was stalling the match so that the Aurors can arrive in time to see Voldemort so everyone believes that he is back. Plus among the three of them, Dumbledore is the only one with the ability to love, so that is already a plus for him. i haven't read the books but i think it was portrayed better in the movies because if voldemort is so much weaker than dumbeldore it all makes no sense then dumbeldore can just “kill” him and then he needs a few years to come back and this gained time can be used to search for the horcruxes (i think it's important to have the villain always at least equal with the “mentor” character from the power ratio, like in star wars obi wan and vader) but that's just my opinion.

In a simple duel, I’m almost certain it would be Dumbledore > Voldemort > Grindelwald, but their level is close enough that little circumstances could change the odds.
My arguments: Old Dumbledore had the high ground against Voldemort in the Ministry (in the book). Dumbledore also defeated Grindelwald without the Elder Wand, while Grindelwald possessed it.
However, we need to remain nuanced. At his weakest-old and withered-Grindelwald managed to successfully use Occlumency against Voldemort’s most aggressive Legilimency. So, even though Grindelwald was likely the least immediately powerful, the gap between the three was small enough that he could manage a few victories against both.
Now, let’s consider a long-term war. If it weren’t for Dumbledore’s cleverness, manipulations, and obvious luck, Voldemort would have won because he was virtually immortal. Neither Dumbledore nor Grindelwald had that advantage.

We know for certain that Voldemort had the greatest knowledge of the Dark Arts, but Dumbledore’s expertise in “light” magic was likely just as profound. I imagine Europe-starting with France, first exposed-was thinking, “Wtf just happened?" and then "Shit! Can we even intervene now? Their new Prime Minister is a long-standing, high-ranking administrator; there’s no way we can move against his legitimacy".
I don't know why people want a fixed ranking, it's obvious their level is pretty close and there is no way to say "this one is absolutely the best". Rowling never meant things to be that simple, environment and circumstances were very important in all their deeds and fights + a part of mystery remains on many events.

If i don't remember bad, in an interview Rowling saids that Dumbledore and Voldemort were equals in terms of magic power, but Voldemort its better duelist and more lethal, while Dumbledore were without doubt the best wizard of all times after merlin of course, so whe can say that in a duel between these three without the elder wand of course to, the most probably result would be Voldemort wining.

In the books, it is stated by Rita Skeeter that Voldemort is the most dangerous dark wizard of all time. That may have two reasons:
1) Grindelwald never attacked England and Rita Skeeter lives in England. Asking this question to an American for example may change the answer.
2) Voldemort killed anybody that stood against his aims, but Grindelwald's aim was for the greater good. He didn't aim just being more powerful so he killed less people. Of course a person like Voldemort who aims more and more power would be more dangerous.
Also in the seventh book, Albus Dumbledore stated that "Grindelwald and I are equal of each other. Maybe I am a little bit more powerful." So in conclusion, the order of the most powerful wizards is clear:

Not only did dumbledore defeat grindelwald, he also whooped voldemorts ass at the department of mystery. At least in the books.
I think we read different books because as far as i remember they were evenly matched and Voldemort parried every attack that Dumbledore threw at him and even almost killed him if not for the phoenix. So if anything it was a tie and nobody whooped anyone.

Technically unknown if Grindelwald wielded elder wand in their fight. It’s widely accepted by fans to be the case but not directly stated. He was master if the elder wand at the time and Dumbledore became master of the elder wand after defeating him but technically that’s possible if he doesn’t use elder wand in their fight too.
Just as Harry got elder wand mastery from Draco by wrestling Draco’s wand off Draco, not defeating elder wand wielding Draco. So defeating the master of the elder wand is enough to gain mastery, they don’t have to be using the elder wand.
You put prime but fail to realize when Dumbledore battles Voldemort he is over 100 years old and wasn’t even trying to kill and he deafeated gg when he was in possession of the elder wand it’s not even close

In my opinion,no wizard(or witch) has better dark arts than Grindelwald(maybe more dark arts control but not dark arts) he got kicked out of an dark arts school cause he used(or abused his dark arts and was too dangerous),not to talk about he almost beat prime dumbledore,meanwhile Voldermort couldnt take over a highschool,Grindelwald took over Europe.(1.Dumbledore.2.Grindelwald. 3.Voldermort)
I dont think we ever saw Dumbledore in his prime, we can only picture what was written in the books. Dumbledore defeated Grindewald, and the duel was described to be the most intense among any duels anyone has ever seen. He also became the only person Voldemort ever feared. Even when he was old, and he dueled Voldemort in the Ministry of Magic, I believe he was stalling the match so that the Aurors can arrive in time to see Voldemort so everyone believes that he is back. Plus among the three of them, Dumbledore is the only one with the ability to love, so that is already a plus for him. So yea I think Dumbledore is no doubt the most powerful wizard in the whole wizarding world.
