How Dumbledore DEFEATED Grindelwald and Why He Never Went to Azkaban - Harry Potter Explained

  • Hey guys, welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In this video, we’ll be tackling a couple of questions, the first being ‘how did dumbledore defeated gellert grindelwald’, and the second question being - why didn’t Grindelwald go to Azkaban? We know Gellert Grindelwald as one of the darkest and most powerful wizards of all time, considered by most to be second to only Lord Voldemort in terms of sheer power (as far as dark wizards go). "In a list of Most Dangerous Dark Wizards of All Time, he would miss out on the top spot only because You-Know-Who arrived, a generation later, to steal his crown," Rita Skeeter wrote. Grindelwald was born in the year 1883, and in his younger years he was a student at Durmstrang institute. While attending the school, Grindelwald’s sadistic nature shone through, and he was expelled for experimenting with twisted and dark magic.
When he left school, Grindelwald met a young Albus Dumbledore, and the two spent every minute together. I think that the magical power of each young man can be partly attributed to the time that they spent with each other. Though Dumbledore and Grindelwald were close, there was definitely a crossroads where the two began to go down very different paths. It was Grindelwald’s intention to find the deathly Hallows, then lead a wizarding revolution that would effectively put an end to the international statute of secrecy, breaking down the ‘secretive’ divide between the two worlds. This revolution would create a global power hierarchy that would place powerful witches and wizards at the top of the food chain, effectively giving them full control of muggles and muggle affairs. Dumbledore and Grindelwald parted ways after a three-way duel that also involved Abeforth(Dumbledore’s brother). The duel resulted in the death of Albus’s sister, Ariana, and it effectively put an end to their relationship.
At the height of Grindelwald’s power, he was seemingly unstoppable, with an army of fanatics, and the possession of the elder wand, there was only one person who could stop him. Dumbledore.

DUmbledore will fail to destroy the Blood Pact, and th's why it will take him so long. In the end he will sacrifize Credence and use some magical beasts and other third means, not the spells, to disarm and capture Grindelwald. We even get a hint from Newt, when the sniffler steals the Blood Pact, that there are things GG doesn't understand or tends to ignore, just like Voldemort underestimated love

In the book when dumbledore drinks the cave potion, he relives the moment when grindelwald used crucio on Aberforth. And he screams ”dont hurt them, please hurt me instead!”. Which to me implies that dumbledore COULDN’T help his siblings. Dumbledore would never ask someone to stop torturing, HE WOULD JUST STOP THEM HIMSELF.

voldemort is probably umatched in the dark arts, yes but he has a lack of understanding for lots of other magic and grindelwald and dumbledore both where skilled in almost any subject or at least had knowledge about it.
To choose not to follow something doesn't make you necessarely less powerful.

    • @saljpal3

I'd say that Grindlewald is just as heartless as Voldemort he's just more charismatic and good at pretending he has humanity. (The greater good) was just a tool he used to control his followers and make it appear he was serving a noble cause. If you can manipulate Dumbledore then you must be an extremely good manipulator.

    • @BlackDragonWitheHawk
      @BlackDragonWitheHawk 4 года назад +5

@@saljpal3 yes, the results are pretty much the same but the origins are different.
If you go to extrem measures to achieve a goal, may it be with good intentions or for "the greater good" or not, extremism means leaving feelings and ethics behind.
I think even then there is a fundamental difference between a purely powerhungry and crazzy, murderous bastard and a powerhungry intelect that is driven to extremism...
This difference becomes visible if you think about why grindelwald accepted his imprisonment, whilst Riddle would have fought against it until the verry end, should he have been captured.

No matte how, I really hope Dumbledore would visit Grindelwald during the long 53 years. Being alone in a dark room with the same blanket for 53 years... how cruel and lonely😭 Grindelwald reflected his behaviour and regretted what he had done. He’s no longer a bad person like before. He deserved the punishment to be in prison for life as he killed aurors during battle but as he changed and regretted, I think he also deserved visits from the one he loved. Not only did he know that he is wrong, he also protected Dumbledore til the end by not telling Voldemort about the Elder wand. He never betrayed Dumbledore!!! He still loved Dumbledore for 53 years even without seeing him at all. Besides, speaking of personality, unlike Voldemort, Grindelwald didn’t force people to follow him by creating fear. Grindelwald didn’t do massacre like Voldemort too. Voldemort killed many more than him. Yet Voldemort didn’t even hv to suffer the coldness and loneliness in a dark cell for half a century… it’s completely unfair to Grindelwald. It really breaks my heart when knowing that Voldemort’s visit was the only day when Grindelwald woke up and found that he’s not alone💔
In current days, even life sentenced prisoners will be given chance to communicate with family by visiting or writing letters and also breathe fresh air. In many countries, life sentenced prisoners can even be released at their old age if they behaved well in prison and realised the fault they did.
Let’s do the wizard world a favour that now I don’t demand the releasing of Grindelwald. But just visits from Dumbledore is totally reasonable considering he behaved so well in prison and he regretted what he did. He loved Dumbledore and protected him til the end…
I really hope Dumbledore would have visited him during the 53 years😔

I think it’s reasonable to assume that at the time of their duel of legend, Dumbledoor is significantly more powerful than Grindlewald. Grindlewald had the elder wand and Albus Loved him, truly and deeply loved him and probably didn’t want to hurt him but he knew he had to stop him. That’s two huge handicaps in the favour of Grindlewald if he intended to Kill Dumbledoor. But Dumbledoor won, and without killing Grindlewald. That’s because he was simply more powerful.

I have a feeling that Grindelwald’s blue flame ring and Dumbledore’s normal flame ring will be seen and used at the same time with them at the centre as Dumbledore’s flames are an above head spell and Grindelwald’s is a ground flame spell. The chance to see the two of them duking it out in a ring of impenetrable blue and red flames would surely be a terrible opportunity to miss. The flames could quite literally be battling one another whilst the two wizards themselves are firing off other spells at one another. Not only would it be cinematically beautiful but it would also sort of parallel the colour of the spells that Harry and Voldemort most commonly used against one another (Harry’s spell being expelliamus which is red in colour and Voldemort’s being avada kedavra which is green. It would be a subtle nod to later events in the timeline as well as strengthening the bond between Harry and Dumbledore as the hero figure. It would also serve as a call back to the previous movie where the blue flames were turned red only by the power of several powerful wizards using finite. This would be a subtle nod to Dumbledore’s true power as his ability alone would be shown to be as great as many other wizards combined much like Grindelwald who defeated many wizards simultaneously, in the previous instalment. It would also cement the idea that it was a battle between Dumbledore and Grindelwald alone as it had never been mentioned that Newt or anybody else was involved. It would make sense that Newt wouldn’t be able to assist as he physically wouldn’t be able to get into the ring of flames. The only person who could would be Dumbledore as we see in the previous movie that only people who follow Grindelwald are able to pass through the flames. It would make sense that the flames wouldn’t hurt Dumbledore because of their strong connection or perhaps the blood pact would cancel out the effects of the flames on Dumbledore who then destroys it so as to fight his former friend.

We want burgers without fat, young children to be able to play in parks, young women and men to be able to walk down the darkest alleys, without fear, but we want this without the harsh element, we want a society where pedophiles, rapists and murderers would be so terrified of the police and the courts. All committed horrible atrocities upon their own people in the Name of the greater good. Robespierre was no different. I bet the fight ends with Dumbledore catching Grindelwald with a simple spell, such as expelliarmus, albeit after the two great wizards match against one another with some pretty amazing magic. I say this, bc the two men had some romance in their youth and while Grindelwald is a dark wizard, he does know love and may still hold onto hope for Dumbledore. Also, both wizards possess powerful spells that would certainly kill the other if not blocked, and if Grindelwald blocks such a spell cast by Dumbledore, it is unlikely to win Dumbledore the duel and thereby the loyalty of the elder wand.

  • @ugolomb
    @ugolomb 4 года назад +1

Since Grindelwald was in posession of the unbeatable wand, Dumbledore had to find a way, at some point, to stop him from using the wand -- distract him or make him pause in his tracks. Rita Skeeter hints that Grindelwald willingly surrendered to Dumbledore, and usually, Skeeter works by distorting the truth rather than inventing outright lies.
So what I guess (or more precisely hope) is that Dumbeldore managed to make Grindelwald face the true horror of what he's been doing, targeting that tiny bit of empathy that distinguished Grindelwald from Voldemort (who had none whatsoever). The inspiration for this idea came to me from another magical universe -- Terry Pratchett's Discworld. In Pratchett's novel "Wyrd Systers", the witch Granny Weatherwax forces Lady Felmet, the Lady-Macbeth-like antagonist, to experience her true nature. As Weatherwax explains to her fellow-witches:
'No-one becomes like she is without building walls inside their head [...] I’ve just knocked them down. Every scream. Every plea. Every pang of guilt. Every twinge of conscience. All at once. There's a little trick to it.'
Dumbledore could still have used all the spectacular elemental spells to overcome Grindewald's army, and to stop Grindewald from killing him. Once he got close enough, however, I would like to see him take advantage of a moment of distraction to plant a sort conscience-awakening spell on Grindelwald -- one that would only work because Grindelwald, unlike Voldemort, does have some conscience left. Forced to confront the full horror of the deaths and suffering he caused - among people whom, he persuaded himself, he was seeking to lead and defend -- Grindelwald would then indeed lose the will to fight for a few moments, just long enough for Dumbledore to disarm and capture him. This would also help explain why, eventually, Grindelwald experienced genuine remorse for what he's done.

Rita would only resort to outright lies if she didn't have a half-truth to lean on; and often the lies she peddles aren't her own (which is not meant to excuse her: when she peddles other people's lies, she does it for her convenience, and never bothers to check whether there's any truth to it). For instance, she was quite correct in implying that there was something wrong with Arianna Dumbledore, and that her death had something to do with Grindewald's relations with Albus (even though she neither knew nor cared about the details; I'm sure that, had she known Arianna had an obscurus, she would have run with it, as it's even more sensational than her being a squib). More to the point, I don't believe Rowling would have planted that hint about Grindelwald's surrender if she had simply meant it to be a complete fabrication. More likely, it's a rumour that Rita heard which is partly based in fact, though not in the way she thought -- as was the case with Arianna).

Impossible as a wizard can manifest their magic through almost anything. A wand is simply the best conduit to do so. More likely that Nurmengard was simply a prison of complex magic, magic that Grinelwald himself put in place to make the place inescapable. Suppressing magic, you have to remember, is what creates obscurials. I thik we can agree that given his love for him and that his sister became one, Dumbledore would never have done this to Grindelwald. Azkaban avoids this issue by suppressing not the magical ability but the hope from it's prisoners. Where as Azkaban is much more crude in the fact it uses fear to suppress a wizards magical abilities via the use of Dementors. I find it more likely that Grindelwald was simply successful in using exceptional magic in the creation of his prison.

Just to try to envision the level of power of Albus and Gellert, he fended off, effortlessly at that, over 30 Aurors. Aurors are at least as powerful as witches and wizards such as Tonks, Lupin, Mad Eye Moody, Kinsley Shacklebolt, these are very powerful wizards. And he easily dispatched over 30 of them. That's no joke.
In their prime, I think the top 3 of witches and wizards would be:
    1. Voldemort (With Horcruxes)
    2. Albus Dumbledore
    3. Gellert Grindlewald
At the time of Voldemort and Dumbledore's duel at the Ministry of Magic, they battled to a stalemate. But if you read the books, Dumbledore wasnt fighting to kill, simply to defend and stall Voldemort for as long as he can. But even so, by the time the Minister and Aurors arrived, Dumbledore was starting to tire. While Voldemort was getting upset that he couldn't kill Dumbledore, he was still very much at 100% stamina. This is due to Voldemorts horcruxes. He doesnt tire, age, or even get short of breathe. He could have fought Dumbledore at his absolute prime, and even if Dumbledore was more powerful, Voldemort would have ultimately outlasted Dumbledore and eventually killed him. His Horcruxes just put Voldemort in an entirely different league of his own. Although Dumbledore never truly reached his prime strength, he was still strong enough to win against Grindlewald, and duel Voldemort to a stalemate in an elder age. That is insane power, and it's safe to say that he never reached his prime. As he became a teacher because he was scared that his lust for power would corrupt him. Just imagine how powerful Dumbledore at his peak would have been.

    • @luigidavola7873

False. Dumbledore still outranks Voldemort in more ways than you can think. In the ministry as you said, Dumbledore wasn't fighting to kill. He was stalling obviously. He could have killed Voldemort in seconds but he knew that that was Harry's battle, in order for Harry to survive. So Dumbledore was stalling and protecting Harry.
Second, in no way does Jk Rowling state in the book that having horcruxes make you have forever stamina, it just implies that you split your soul into different parts, making you immoral ( by living longer as ur soul is split into different things).

The facts aren't fully clear of their duel yet, but I think Grindelwald was either not at 100%, Albus had help from Newt or others, or Grindelwald had eventually thrown the duel. Not wanting to truly hurt Albus and had allowed him to win.
But the only reason I put Voldemort as number 1 is because of his Horcruxes, as they erase the weakness of stamina reserves and fatigue. But if Voldemort had not created his horcruxes, I strongly believe the ranking would go like this:
Top 3 powerful wizards (no horcruxes)
      1. Albus Dumbledore
      2. Gellert Grindelwald

Dumbledore`s greatest weapon against the Dark Arts was its antithesis: love and compassion; selflessness instead of the inherently diminishing selfishness. I think the clue for this is in the Deathly Hallows in the books that Hermione Granger summoned from Dumbledore`s office after his death - in researching the Horcruxes she discovered the nearly deadly antidote to ripping a soul apart: remorse, or the expression of love that is compassion for your victims. Thus, I think Dumbledore, knowing this, after reading these Dark Arts` books, used this unassailably potent force to overwhelm and defeat Grindlewald; the Latin for `feel the pain you caused` is "dolorem fecisti" and could well serve to force a dark wizard to finally connect with his victims in an attempt to fuse their shredded soul in to its natural whole state. Remember that magical powers are almost always directly affected by the witch or wizard`s mental state, indeed to use any of the unforgiveable spells you have to [mean] them for them to be effective. So it follows that a wizard that is suddenly overcome with an emotional feedback of all those they have murdered or maligned could render them impotent for long enough for them to be defeated and disarmed?

I think that Hagrid and the creatures he had and cared for at the time came to Dumbledore’s aide giving Dumbledore the split second where Grinderwald was distracted to kill him. I think this is the reason that Dumbledore always said he would trust Hagrid with his life. And I think it is for that reason, and knowing Hagrid never opened the chamber of secrets, that he used the elder wand to repair Hagrid’s wand and transform it into a pink umbrella.

I was hoping you’d use the weird magic we got to glimpse at when Dumbledore nearly killed Snape... that scene of the last movie really intrigued me. I always wanted to see Dumbledore go all out.

The way how he conjured the water in voldermort duel shows that this type of magic master elements reques a great deal of concentration when Harry stood up, and he flicked him away and dumbledore lost his concentration

[5:15] And THIS is the reason why you need to clarify whether you are talking about a movie or a book.
In film? Yes, they made a blood pact. Which made Dumbledore reluctant to confront Grindelwald. Although he received this pact a dozen or so years before their battle, judging by the canon of the books, so it is likely that the book reason is still valid.
In the book? Then this is not entirely true, since Dumbledore was afraid not to confront Grindelwald, but he was afraid to find out that it was he who killed his sister. He was never omnipotent and fearless.

Well I have a theory, Maybe the elder wand has a twin? That’s particularly why Dumbledore is able to defeat him, as why he didn’t use the wand before, I believed that it is because he used that wand in the duel that killed Ariana, and he is afraid that his speculations might come true if he was defeated, because when you defeat a wizard, the wand shows the people that it killed (example: Voldemort’s wand). So that’s my theory, idk if it’s right

How was Dumbledore able to duel Grindelwald in the 3 way fight that killed his sister, if they had a blood pact? As Grindelwald fled immediately after she was killed, so it could not have taken place after.

they were young, and despite having that magical prowess, maybe they still didn't understand exactly how the blood pact worked. plus, Aberforth was involved, so who's to say whose spell was whose
