The reliability of those is perfect. My grandfather had 3 of them, all v6tdi, all made it to 300k kilometres towing cars around without any problems before he sold them!
I took a few of my relatives to the airport which was about 4 hours away, they had 4 big luggages and the car was filled to the brim. By the time I got to the airport, the avg mpg was about 32.7. By the time I made it back home, Averaged 33.6. It's a fantastic car, really comfortable and fun to drive. Edit: Almost the entire trip was highway with 60 mph avg according to the car
Reunited with TDI Touareg this week. Turned in my 2011 a few years ago for the money. Picked up a 2016 low mileage and grinned all the way across the country bringing it home from N.C. My 100,000 mile calculations on cost per mile revealed that the Diesel is more expensive (at the current prices vs. premium) but, the reliability and reputation of the TDI vs. the V6 Gasser made the decision a no brainer.
I bought a Q7 last year with the same TDI engine and have put 20k mikes on it averaging 28mpg commuting in the terrible Northern Virginia beltway traffic. I couldn’t find another vehicle that can carry family of 6, get such good MPG on commute, tow a trailer better than wife’s LR4 with 5.0 V8, and be nice enough to do business lunches/drive business guests around in. I like the diesel and would buy it again without thinking about it. It’s rock solid and pushes the 6000 lbs + vehicle around with ease.
On the fuel flap there is a small hole on the hinge for you to put the fuel cap on, it saves it from dangling down and potentially scratching the paint
I sold my 07 V10 TDI a couple months back for a Duramax due to needing more space for things like rain tires and spare parts. The Treg is an insanely awesome rig, and you'll honestly get the best towing mileage of any tow vehicle on the market, largely in part to it not being shaped like a brick at the front. Outside of the dumb little VW-ish things that will go wrong, the driveline will be super reliable for you. Congrats!
Cool...bought a '14 for much of the same reasons. Hate the cold shift programming as well...I now use the manual shifting option to force the trans to shift closer to normal. Once it is warm I put it back in regular drive mode. Don't drive often with the tank below 1/4 full. It is said that the fuel in the thank is used to cool the fuel pump. If it gets low - the pump can get hot impacting long term service. I have a lot of warranty left so I am not willing to step up to the tunes etc... HTH...
More often than not interiors have real wood, this included. The faux metal like in Camry’s and so many other is so gross to look at, that really is faux, because I don’t think put actual metal in for decorations. Maybe they would like some diamond plating inside indtead
Love it! I have a 2013 diesel Porsche Cayenne (same car under the skin) that I daily but I bought it to tow with. It’s fantastic. I’ve had it for 25k miles and over 10k has been towing. With a 5,000 lb load I get 22 mpg. Unloaded I get 37 mpg on most highways.
60 mile commute!! That's dedication!! Lots of driving you do! But dammm this is a sweet suv! Please keep us posted on how well it tows, soon I will need something to tow my cars.
Exactly what I was about to say, Marc. That V10 diesel. So cool that they did that. But without it, kinda boring. It works for a family-mobile, which I suppose we all need.
I have a 2012 150TDI, (only sold as TDI after 2011 thank Christ) in Australia. It’s epic, have had it now for about 3 years. Won’t go anyway else now, if I need a pickup I just grab me trailer and away I go! Great video
I love my Cayenne Diesel. The dieselgate "fixes" really dicked with fuel economy, time to torque, and general driveability. Rather than bring the torque in they really damped it down, so that there's nothing...nothing...nothing...all of the boosts. FE dropped from about 32-33mpg highway (hand calculated) to about 29 mpg after the fix too. I'll eventually get a Malone stage 1 tune and reflash the TCU, although I'd be more than happy just putting it back to how she left the factory. I can still tow my miata on open trailer and get about 22mpg keeping it to 70-75mph. Tows like there's nothing back there. It'll hold 8th gear on all but the steepest grades and the speedo doesn't budge. You definitely want 21's with summer tires. She handles like a larger WRX.
Beautiful Carr, it’s crazy that the VR6 has the same towing capacity. Also of the few vehicles that people say that they would buy again, even though the reliability is rated as average to below average people always state they would buy the Touareg again👌💯
I have a 2006 V8 Touareg with 172K miles on it and have towed my 7000 pound enclosed trailer for the last 4 years. Has been a very good experience for me. Plenty of power with about 7-8 mpg while towing. This past winter, we bought a 2013 TDI Touareg and love it even more. Love getting 26 mpg and since it's the Lux model, it rides a lot smoother than my 2006. Just towed 800 miles this past weekend and it was nice getting better fuel economy and have a smoother ride. Got about 11 mpg on rolling hills and diesel is about 20 cents cheaper than premium, so that is an extra bonus.
Great video series for those of us with young families, shopping for a Touareg at the moment and this series is going to answer a lot of questions. Looks like a lot more capable than equivalent santa fe / explorer etc. Would be interesting if you can evaluate an airbag system for the rear springs to help level when towing.
I know it's been two years, but there are often very affordable manual air bag systems that are very effective in raising the rear under load. I don't know for this truck in particular, but I've installed systems on other trucks and they work great. Tie them to one inlet, pump them up with a bike pump, read the pressure with a regular tire pressure gauge, and Bob's your uncle.
dude people scratching their heads about you putting 19 inch rims on that when imo you should step down to 18's and give yourself an extra inch of sidewall to bag out at low pressure, those people don't understand how their tires work. Those things are outsanding off road, to get the best out of the technical features VW built into them, the best bang for buck upgrade is smaller rims and bigger sidewalls on AT tires. Improves on road comfort and offroad performance significantly. As for tunes, most cars are seriously under-tuned from the factory, if you live somewhere with clean, high cetane diesel fuel then yes, a tune will make more power and improve fuel economy. If you live somewhere with watery poor quality diesel a tune will give you a bit more power. An important supporting mod if you're going to chip or tune any turbo diesel is to install a blow-by catchcan on the crankcase to intake return line to take the oil vapor and some of the carbon out of the recirculated air. This will seriously reduce the amount of sludge that will build up in the intake over time, as well as helping stop oil getting into the intercooler.
Oil catch can and with these older Diesels I recommend an EGR Blockoff Plate. They soot up a lot and it only hurts tze engine in the name of lowering Emissions.
I have a 2013 Touareg TDI and I recommend using Propel HPR Diesel and put Archoil AR6200 oil treatment and their AR9100 friction modifier. Can't go wrong using this stuff.
Junk, that Propel. palm oil based. The motor was designed to be run on petroleum based diesel, not synthesized crap out of trees and junk recycled oils.
I picked up a Gen 1 Touareg (v6 3.2) with 85k miles for $1500... engine is rock solid, tranny as well. However, all the other small electrical and trim stuff has to be dealt with on a 13 year old car. It's now our grocery-getter about town... :)
chiil that’s really cheep with that mileage. I picked up an gen 1 4.2 hids for 2250 167k, many new parts and paperwork. Battery brakes tires driveshaft fuel pumps fuel filter.
Loved the detailed review videos. Most detailed I have seen so far. I am planning to buy one, would it be a good car as a daily driver for a 45 miles daily drive? I am new to diesel so wanted to check, i am driving enough to maintain that diesel.
I have a 2013 Touareg TDI that I bought new. It is a great driving car and loves the highway and towing. I have 65k miles on it now. Thus far, $22,460 in repairs have been made to the car. 4 Adblue heaters, 2 cats, the radio, 4 5F modules, the start button twice, the down pipe and a few other little things. The problem is the car is a Porsche in VW clothes, so you pay Porsche part prices. Don't get me wrong, I love how the car drives, but I will never buy another. I bought a $2k extended warranty so I have had only around $2k out of pocket to cover the warranty deductible. I don't want to rain on your parade, but wanted let you know what you are getting in to. Good luck and enjoy how they drive!
I wish you the best of luck but I had the exactly 2011 twin of yours and it was horrible. I used it to tow my race car. After only 1 year and many coolant leaks, DPF replacement and transmission replacement I sold it as soon as the warranty expired. I really love my Durango after 94,000 miles.
I'm a Proud VW owner. Your Tuareg is a Fantastic Machine Make Sure you maintain it properly and it will serve its purpose for a long time. 240000 km on its clock it's nothing it will do 3 times that with proper maintenance. Make Sure you Put the RIGHT OIL Castrol EDGE 5W30 LL (7,7 litre) witch is recommended for it and regularly change it every 15000 km/10000 miles and you will have a reliable SUV also do a oil and filter change on your gearbox and you are good to go for another 200k. Good luck with your new Tuareg and Welcome to the VW Club. :)
I have a 2013 TDi. Lux. ...I can get 700 miles per tank. I tow a 5,500 lbs. travel trailer with no issues. I wish you luck if you have to add a break controller. LOL I love my Touareg!
Hey man, just a suggestion I have “CR2 eco box power tune” increases torque and HP up to 40%. I’ve noticed a big increase in power and torque plug in and play takes 2mins notice it after 300miles or so. Easy mode for less then $200 only thing I would recommend is servicing more frequently as the car is working bit harder
It’s so funny listening to you guys talk about diesels like that- they’re so common here in the UK and we have 2 diesel pumps (regular and super) and 2 petrol pumps (reg and super) at most stations
@@speedacademy Why? They're pathetic. No power, they cost more to run, they pollute like rolling Chinese factories, they're insanely over-complicated and unreliable... they should have never even been offered in light vehicles.
The touareg tdi is a great vehicle, only issues are the heater element wears out every 60k or so for the ad-blue/urea and nox sensor which is expensive due to module incorporated into sensor
My parents bought me a 2011 Touareg as my high school graduation gift a year ago!! Let me know if you’re selling your 20” wheels!! I’m looking to replace mine
I think faux wood would actually cost more than the real wood which this vehicle does have. I had a Lexus es330 everybody said they hated the faux wood in reviews, but it’s real. You ever drive around and see those tall things, those are trees which are all wood. For some reason the idea that the interior of the VW is the equivalent to Clark Griswolds woody wagon pisses me off. Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees. Why is it the assumption it’s fake? It’s too shiny, that’s lacquer. I don’t get it? Maybe you goombas are projecting your own faux selfs onto the wood
we have had almost zero issues with it. one thing that popped up recently, is the door handle unlock and lock functionality has stopped. the key fob still works at unlocking and locking, but the handle doesn't work anylonger.
I lowered my 2011 Cayenne S with H&R springs and the ride was VERY firm. I've always driven sports cars, and am used to rough rides, but it was extremely rough, over just about every bump. My wife couldn't drive it while pregnant because the bumps were too harsh. It handles better and looked great, but I'm not sure it was worth it. Just my $0.02. I've since upgraded to the turbo with air suspension, and the difference is night and day.
I am from from Germany and we are driving a Mercedes Viano 2.2cdi, it's a big Van and we get 6.5l/100km with a total range of over 1200km. And you can transport 7 people and luggage + dog with bikes on a rack. Diesel just rules. Our small city car gets 8l / 100km at half the size
I'm probably the 95th person to say that the Faux wood is real. More than likely it's a veneer of a high quality wood. Veneers are used on boats all of the time to get a beautiful look at a fraction of cost and weight.
have the same car, owned it since 98k miles and now 125k miles. had a few bumps but it was all covered under extended warranty that is why I'm not going with the chips. otherwise, it would cost already about $8k USD. the fuel pump is about to go out, DEF heater was replaced, coolant leak and EGR, that's all the problems I had so far.
Dave was that video to convince the mrs that her SUV is going to great multi purpose family car? Mate its going to drop in the arse with a loaded car trailer on the back. I've seen them towing small 16 foot caravans here in Australia with only 150kg on the ball and its not a pretty sight, even with weight distribution bars fitted. Glad your not going to lower it.....oh hang on! I seen one rip a 6m boat out of the water last week. It shaved 5mm of the Dunbier draw bar and broke the dam chains off. I think Peter was just being polite "yer Dave this is a great idea" Hand both sets of keys over to the mrs mate you wont be needing them. You know what truck you really need to tow the race cars..................and yes it will need a supercharger upgrade! By the way best channel on RUclips boys a credit to you both.
THE FIRST V10 TDI TOUARAGS HAD THE OXYGEN SENSOR BURIED ON THE TOPSIDE OF THE EXHAUST PIPE. IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED EVERY 20,000 TO 30,000 MILES. TO GET IT OUT YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE ENGINE.
my e90 325d beemers shows range of 1200kms with full tank but I usually have to fill it up when I've done 1000kms. absolutely love the sound of m57 and all the torque that it gives. I need to buy coilovers and springs for it and new rims for summer tires then I can just cruise happily
Interesting to see the petrol pump seems to have so many grades, 87,89,91 & 94. Here in the UK standard unleaded is 95 octane, super is 98. Many stations have two grades of diesel as well.
Just got an 06 V8 Reg..for 400$ cus it wouldnt start n he just bought a new car instead of fixing ..bonus 2 pumps later n VAROOM so roughly for 600 ive gotten a SWEEET REG...
I love my 2013 Touareg TDI. Towed my trailer with S2000 like it wasn’t even there. Have a Malone stage 2 tune now so I’ve got nearly 500ftlb torque and def get more range (about 700 miles to the tank) at highway speeds. Towing I can get from NY to Ohio (Toledo) on a tank of fuel.
No you are thinking about a BMW or PORSCHE TURBO . These things are solid I have 210,000 miles no problems at all replaced the alternator and Water pump at 186,000 it still looked like it had about 60,000 miles on it when they took the water pump out
IDontHaveAVideo It is such a great car. I have got the V6 Diesel engine with 262 hp. It runs so good and is very well equipped. I love this car and it never let me down since I bought it 3 years ago (MY 2015)
curious, why do you say chip them because its a turbo diesel? arent you able to chip tune any car? or is there some specific benefit to tuning a turbo diesel specifically. considering between TDI and 3.6l touareg's for a tow vehicle, which is why i ask. thanks!
I call mine a Toe Rag and I'm about to buy another. Best turning circle, most comfortable seats and some real off-road and towing cred without the comfort sacrifices. Just watch out, the battery is under the seat and needs a special tool to replace.
I love my 2013 Touareg TDI. It's reliable, fuel efficient, and comfortable. And the "faux" wood trim is actually genuine hardwood.
Yeah just because it isn't open pore (which can also be faked) doesn't mean it's not real wood. The Germans don't do fake wood.
The reliability of those is perfect. My grandfather had 3 of them, all v6tdi, all made it to 300k kilometres towing cars around without any problems before he sold them!

I was on hunt for a touareg tdi for a while i finally got one i loved thanks for the touareg video series i got a lot of ideas from you guys
All these comments fill me with joy. I’m defo going to get one of these
Pretty much everything with a variant of the 3.0 TDI is gonna be good at towing. These things are torque monsters.
@4:57… you guys need to do research on your own vehicles… that is not faux wood…oooh…i see other folks pointed that out too😂
Miss mine! Best vehicle I've ever owned. I had the T2 model with V8 and air suspension.
we in Germany pronounce it like "TO-AH-REG"
never really liked these things but the V10 diesels truly are impressive.
Exactly what I was about to say, Marc. That V10 diesel. So cool that they did that. But without it, kinda boring. It works for a family-mobile, which I suppose we all need.
Are the V10 junk though for reliability? In the US I've heard bad things about the V10 tdi.

I just bought a 2011 about two weeks ago... Love it.....
Any issues yet?
If only VW brought the V8 TDI to America...
Watch the load rating on those tires when towing, there is a large range of ratings and a lot of high performance tires aren’t great on load ratings

I forgot that diesel are actually expensive, here in Malaysia it's heavily subsidized. A litre of diesel is MYR 2.18 or CAD 0.72.
Alot of hate on the touaregs, i have a first gen and tbh its great! Learn to do your own work and itll treat you the same as any other vehicle.
I'm seriously considering one of these as a daily/tow rig for my Audi S6.
Working at a VW dealership might be making me a bit bias....
Also diesel nozzles are different size from gas and the Touareg has a safety cover that doesn’t open up unless you insert the larger diesel nozzle.
Great point!
It’s so funny listening to you guys talk about diesels like that- they’re so common here in the UK and we have 2 diesel pumps (regular and super) and 2 petrol pumps (reg and super) at most stations
Haha, it's a shame diesels never caught on more here.
I have a 2012 never had a issue with it.. Gas v6... Never had a problem with it. Always on the highway 8 to 12 hour trips.. The R Line looks better..
Great Trucks
My parents bought me a 2011 Touareg as my high school graduation gift a year ago!! Let me know if you’re selling your 20” wheels!! I’m looking to replace mine
Got a stage one tune for my 2001 Jetta TDI and I got 60 more kms per tank. Factory runs the turbos at like 30% efficient, the tune make it run 70%
Do you still have it ? If so how is it? Looking to get one!
The gas cap apparently you can pin it to the top of the small door so it doesn't dingle around ...nice car..
Maybe you goombas are projecting your own faux selfs onto the wood
we have had almost zero issues with it. one thing that popped up recently, is the door handle unlock and lock functionality has stopped. the key fob still works at unlocking and locking, but the handle doesn't work anylonger.
erik thiessen I’ve actually had the same issue. I believe the actuator has gone out and then I have a bad lock button-did you repair yours yourself?
@@johnmonaghan3588 i have not fixed it yet. I am waiting for the snow tire removal and then they will check it out at the dealership.
I have a 2015 Touareg v6. I’m loving it and wouldn’t trade it in for any 3 row suv out there.
You'll like the transmission tune. You get the Engine Braking back for towing and also displays what gear your in even when you're in Auto
before the fix, i got 8.3 litres/100. i usually got 1100 kms from a tank.
That's crazy. Im currently getting only 800KM to the tank. Cant wait for the tune to get it back to where it was, fingers crossed.
I have owned a 2102 for past six years. Zero problems outside regular maintenance. IMO best underrated SUV on used market.
I tow with a Cayenne Diesel, it is an absolute dream.
That's what I wanted but was out of the budget!
@@speedacademy I have a 2014 TDI for sale here in SC!
I traded my Cayenne for Touareg and I have no regrets about it .. it a solid luxury vehicle that is so under valued in the USA
I would think it’d be the other way around. Any particular reason you did that?
cayenne is practically the same as the Touareg. Volkswagen makes both
@@Vr6.christos True, but sometimes I wish I went with an A3 instead of my Jetta. That's why I'm wondering why he went from the Porsche to the VW
@@elsapomasguapo I think the Toureg is a very rare case in what I'm ready glad to be in the know!
Let us know when you need Touareg Parts..... We got you ; )
Thanks, Will reach out when I need something but lets hope its not soon!
Need a passenger rear door for 2012!
I was just lookin for you guys saw you one another site but couldnt find you folks
Thanks for the info. I'm going to give them a try but have heard that they are firm while other say the right is just right.
Can you share the info of the guy who does the fix to de fix the diesel fix in PA???
I'm probably the 95th person to say that the Faux wood is real. More than likely it's a veneer of a high quality wood. Veneers are used on boats all of the time to get a beautiful look at a fraction of cost and weight.
have the same car, owned it since 98k miles and now 125k miles. had a few bumps but it was all covered under extended warranty that is why I'm not going with the chips. otherwise, it would cost already about $8k USD. the fuel pump is about to go out, DEF heater was replaced, coolant leak and EGR, that's all the problems I had so far.
The whole emissions system was replaced under the scandal so not too worried about that.
I love my Touareg, I have the T4 gen, towing, family, milage, looks and luxury.
Bro. Good SUV. Have one too. Hope to see all the mods you guys going to do to it.
Thanks for the info on a tune. I was considering getting a first Gen just for the power. I don't mind paying for a newer car and a tune thanks again.
2014 Touareg TDI R-Line. Bought it new. Still has a steering wheel vibration that even VW can’t seem to get rid of. Otherwise, love, love my Touareg!
Check your manual and see if the wheels are put on in the correct position.
THE FIRST V10 TDI TOUARAGS HAD THE OXYGEN SENSOR BURIED ON THE TOPSIDE OF THE EXHAUST PIPE. IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED EVERY 20,000 TO 30,000 MILES. TO GET IT OUT YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE ENGINE.
Awsome video, you guys ever see the old version of the Touareg tow a space ship. Pretty sweet I think it was top gear!
Touareg TDi is still on my shopping list for my next rig, I like the warm wood accents though.
Weathertech is top notch - I always purchase their mats for my vehicles.
These things rock - congrats!
my e90 325d beemers shows range of 1200kms with full tank but I usually have to fill it up when I've done 1000kms. absolutely love the sound of m57 and all the torque that it gives. I need to buy coilovers and springs for it and new rims for summer tires then I can just cruise happily
Interesting to see the petrol pump seems to have so many grades, 87,89,91 & 94. Here in the UK standard unleaded is 95 octane, super is 98. Many stations have two grades of diesel as well.
for diesels always keep a pair of gloves for refueling, seems every pump in the world is leaking a little and dirty.
You’re a legend 💪
Wicked! Just got a Malone Stg 2 so cant wait to try it out.
Did you drain the 40 gallons of water out of the sills yet?
Levi Heizer That was only an issue with the 1st gen models.
I did... on my 07 tow reg .
What do you mean exactly by sills? Window sills?
How is the TDI holding up? do you wish you would have gotten the older TDI's?
I usually tow with a 4.4 tdv8 Range rover and taught the Touareg was pretty bad at towing compared to it.
Finally... That thing has been lurking in the background for a while now. Cool suv.
Are we placing bets on when the check engine light comes on? :) I say a week.
It’s funny, of all the issues that my Touareg has given me, it’s never had a check engine light
No you are thinking about a BMW or PORSCHE TURBO . These things are solid I have 210,000 miles no problems at all replaced the alternator and Water pump at 186,000 it still looked like it had about 60,000 miles on it when they took the water pump out
Ade Oredin Yes you are right. The Touareg is very reliable. It has a great V6 or V8 Engine, which are very solid
My 2014 TDI R-Line has 68K miles. Never a single issue or CEL. Just oil changes and go! What is your experience with Touaregs?
IDontHaveAVideo It is such a great car. I have got the V6 Diesel engine with 262 hp. It runs so good and is very well equipped. I love this car and it never let me down since I bought it 3 years ago (MY 2015)
Been debating on sportwagon or alltrack. Think i might just get the touareg tdi
But what is the tow hitch rated for, as well as tongue weight? Also have to consider your tires when towing as well
curious, why do you say chip them because its a turbo diesel? arent you able to chip tune any car? or is there some specific benefit to tuning a turbo diesel specifically. considering between TDI and 3.6l touareg's for a tow vehicle, which is why i ask. thanks!
I call mine a Toe Rag and I'm about to buy another. Best turning circle, most comfortable seats and some real off-road and towing cred without the comfort sacrifices. Just watch out, the battery is under the seat and needs a special tool to replace.
I owned this and I loved it!
Why did u get rid of it? What are the cons?
Just a heads up, there's a little hole where you put the cap in on the fuel door so it doesn't rest on your paint.
Thank you!
