I have had a 06' V10 TDI. Ive replaced just about everything on the engine. Turbos, exhaust manifolds, cams and lifters, tandem pump, etc. Yes it was expensive. However, theres alot of bad information on the internet by people who have never owned one saying you need to pull the engine to service anything is flat out wrong. I myself (have no mechanical background) changed the alternator in my driveway in about 6 hours. My mechanic i use for more complicated procedures changed the cams and lifters with the engine installed as well, but if you only have the dealership they will always go by the repair manual procedure which always starts at step 1: Remove engine transmission subfram assembly. I have tuned it and deleted the egr, dpf, and cats running a striaght turbo back exhaust. Upgraded from a 5v to 7v glow plug system. The car is now fully sorted and is an absolutely beast to drive. These videos dont do the Touaregs offroad capabilities justice. I use mine offroad everyday on muddy hilly pipeline right of ways and I can go anywhere I need too. The v10 is a league above the v8 in offroad capability for the simple fact that now that its tuned I have about 605ft/lbs of torque available just off of idle which is almost 2x as much as the V8, but it comes at 2x the cost. If you can fork out a couple grand for important services and can DIY on this vehicle buy the V10. For a 14 year old vehicle I enjoy driving it just as much as my RS3. Plus the heads it turns when you drive by people with the sound of a loud diesel idling in a midsize SUV will never cease to put a smirk on my face. PS tuned im getting about 24-26mpg fuel economy. If you have any questions about a V10 I know just about all there is to know feel free to ask.

@I'm Still Alive some of that work was preventative nothing wrong with the turbos when i changed them i just wanted new ones with my tune. They were problematic when they came out of the factory because owners/dealers/mechanics alike did not know how to take care of them/work on them. You have to understand this was the first time technicians saw this technology was in the touareg in 04-05. Since then 14 years later. Many many of these issues have been resolved. Ex: the driveshafts dont fail on these vehicles thats common incorrect information. Its the rubber center bearing support breaks down and allows the driveshaft to have alot of play. 1800 new from dealer that will fail in 60k miles again. Or $350 vertex center bearing replacement that will last forever. Thats just one of many examples. Im guessing youve never owned one so im youre an expert on Touareg reliability, but thats just one of many examples that they are possible to own if you can perform simple DIY's they are no more out of line with other $70k german vehicle maintenance. You don't buy one of these to be a Camry. Just because you can buy them for $10k or so does not mean the price of parts went down from maintenancing a $50k-$70k vehicle, again nothing new there vehicles depreciate, maintenance cost do not.

I own 5 audi's ranging from the old 1.8t B6 A4 to a 3.0t 4L Q7 TDI and have heard all of reliability experts comment on how they are all big piles of expensive junk. The 2 most expensive repairs that i've ever made to them was 1 battery per vehicle and a set of tires. A couple of sensors went bad which were under $100 and took minutes to fix, other than that NOTHING. Sorry that i can't say the same about my GMC Yukon Xl which has a rebuilt transmission and transfer case along with a second fuel pump and 3rd set of ac delco(highly recommended), knock sensors. I've invested in the proper tools and VCDS software for proper maintenance and a member of Audizine. I also ALWAYS use mobil 1 fully syn and 93 oct on the gasoline ones and fill up at truck stops for my TDI with Mobil Delvac 1 ESP on the oil change. I'm now looking at 5 different V10 TDI's in which i'm about to purchase one as a weekend toy. If i ever run into any issues that i'd be unaware of, i'll definitely look you up!

@@stevespeed3485 Steve I have the same problem... although in the reverse situation. My consumer battery under the seat is dying on me after replacing both about a year ago.. its really hard to tell. These gen 1 Tregs in general were known to chew through batteries due to the heavy strain from the various electrical systems. Im assuming I have a parasitic draw which is killing my battery, but its hard to tell because i have a good bit of aftermarket lighting and systems hooked into it so it may be something I caused. Either way for the time being ill probably just deal with it and replace the battery every year or two when it goes bad. I dont do mine any favors because im in my touareg a lot for work and like to listen to the radio and such with the car off which is terrible for lead-acid batteries to be dischaged and charged repetitively. If you're having to replace it more than once a year I would say maybe take it a dealer and see if they can do a current draw test on it maybe find a quick solution, i wouldnt send them down a rabbit hole chasing a parasitic draw if they dont find something immediately. Car electronics are not my strong point I must admit. Check on club touareg im sure there some information on there that could help you out. Sorry I couldnt be more resourceful.

While the air ride system wasn't known for being exceptionally problematic, the cost to fix any failure will be more than most people can stomach. About the same time you started putting these Touareg videos out, I bought a 2007 with the updated 350hp 4.2 V8, only 67k miles. Steel springs and no rear locker, some slightly upsized Cooper Discoverer 265/60s, no 4-seat climate or cool roof bars, but a backup camera and the same teak interior... and it’s not a golf ball. I gotta say, the thing is nigh unstoppable. Perfect for surprising the group of Jeeps gathered at the top of a hairy incline. Just had it on the Mount Baldy/Mount Rosa/Almagre Mountain/whatever it’s called loop near Colorado Springs. Snow above 10k feet. Got to 11,300 no problem, and after Pike’s Peak was closed at 11,000. I did have to throw chains on the descent back to gravel after a few puckers with the hill descent control. Then I bombed it to Albuquerque the same day at 80-85 in quiet comfort. LOVE this truck but yes, it sucks on gas (I was STOKED at 16.5mpg on that ABQ run), has 2 engine air filters and takes 9.5qts of oil. Those air suspensions are $1500 in parts alone PER CORNER if they fail. I haven’t seen a need for it yet and there are 2-inch lift spacers available for a couple hundy. Got-dang juggernaut.

I just bought a 2010 Touareg with the V6 diesel and the air suspension. I didn’t get the rear differential locker, but I’m not looking for amazing off road capability. I just want to be able to go into the back country more than I can with a typical suv. It has 152,000 miles on it, but comes with a 4yr/48,000 mile warranty on the engine from Volkswagen, due to the diesel emissions fiasco. I paid $8900 for it, which seems like a good deal. I’m considering buying an extended warranty to cover the transmission and air suspension. I’m upgrading the brakes, and I’m going to get a tune that should bump it to about 275 hp and 485 lb/ft of torque. I’m fitting the OEM 19” wheels with Continental TerrainContact 255/55R-19s today. It’s a little surprising how few brands make all terrain tires in a 19” size. All in all, I’m pretty excited about it! Time will tell if I made a good decision or bad, I guess!

Tommy's take on this vehicle is very spot on, though the T2 had many many upgrades and improvements over the T1. In my opinion it is the one to buy if you are in the market. I recently sold my 2008 V10 with air suspension and rear diff lock. I was the second owner, bought it with 5k miles on it. Never had an issue with the air suspension. I put on about 125k miles on it and replaced the power steering twice, two drive shafts, lots of oil leak repairs, countless tire replacements and various other nagging issues. Failure to diagnose and fix electronic issues finally drained me of my willingness to spend any more money on repairs. Having said that, I still miss it. LOL. Ive owned many different vehicles and this one was by far my favorite. Great review. I've been following Tommy's reports on this vehicle and I think he's done a really accurate job describing the attributes and weaknesses of this this vehicle.

Zachary Raby I had a 2007 V10 TDI and had to remove all of upper intakes, fuel rail, EGR cooler, oil cooler and housing to fix the two things: the leaking oil filter housing (liquid cooled) and the passenger side tandem pump gaskets. When I did all of this I replaced the alternator gear sleeve because it had minor play. It might have been the worst part of the entire repair and took hours to get the alternator aligned with the sleeve and attached to gear drive. It was unbearable and I couldn’t imagine having to pay someone to do it.

Problems I had in the years I have owned it are pretty scary but not enough for me to think this car is trash or not worth my money. Had the gas gasket leak before the recall happened. Drive shaft middle support bearing gave out that scared me, I thought it was my motor mounts when I would gas it and everything would start shaking. I would disagree with getting the air suspension. A better and more reliable option is getting the steel suspension with a 2" riser. Less repairs and better for towing. Using a weight distribution and sway bar is not recommended by VW with the air suspension. If you tow then the steel suspension is better (heavier towing / 5k plus). With the riser you get the added lift and can get some nice off road tires that are rated for towing.

I have a 2010 Touareg TDI that I bought, in part, through the influence of your videos. I almost bought a 2005 back in 2004, but I balked at the $50,000 price. Fifteen years later, I picked up the 2010 for $8900. It has 152000 miles, but came with a 4 year 48000 mile warranty on the engine, it has the air suspension, but no rear locker. As I am intending only light off-reading in it (my wife doesn’t tolerate all that bouncing around!), I was okay with that. Anyway, your videos brought it back to mind and I remembered how impressed I was with them at the time. So, for a second vehicle used for light back country trail running, I’m pretty content with it. I wish I had the rear diff locker, but I expect I wouldn’t use it that much, even though it would be reassuring to have it.

Tommy, your analysis is spot on. I wish you had done this video back in early 2015 -- it could have saved me a fortune in building out my current "hunting and fishing station wagon" which replaced my old (and very worn out ) 2004 Chevy Tahoe Z71 4x4, which I miss dearly. I now drive as my "off road in northern Michigan vehicle," a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4 EcoDiesel with Offroad II package. It includes the air suspension and Quadra-Drive II system. I had to order this thing from the factory, because no dealer in the US had one on the lot -- and besides, I wanted the two-tone beige and brown interior, which looks fabulous. It arrived with the wrong tires -- Michelin "all-seasons" which I immediately swapped out for some marginal Michelin "all-terrains" at my local Discount Tire store (but those sucked, too). I am currently running Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs _-- same tires I ran twice on my old Tahoe -- they're fabulous in northern Michigan. In addition to the factory skid plate package I have installed "factory" Mopar rock sliders and numerous extra bash plates sourced from Chief Products, in Australia, which specializes in WK2 Jeep Grand Cherokees, and I installed special Yakima Roof Racks for my canoe. After the $3,075 EcoDiesel Class Action settlement check that I received from FCA last month, I have about $50,000.00 "all-in" for my build. My Jeep's build is just about identical so far as I can tell (except for my Jeep's diesel engine, rock rails and extra skid plates) to your budget Toureg V8 with center and rear locking difs. My Jeep's center dif locks up in 4 low, and the ELSD rear dif actually locks up in 4 low when in "Mud" or "Rock" mode. I typically run in "Mud" mode where I travel off road in northern Michigan. Being able to air up the tires on the Toureg direct from the air suspension compressor is a pretty trick feature -- I'd love to have that on my Jeep. I carry a cheap 12 volt "cigarette lighter plug" air compressor in my Jeep, and I have a shop air compressor back at my Cabin -- which I usually use -- for when I need to air up the tires for travel back on the highway. Although my Jeep's mpgs are probably much better than your Toureg's with its gas V8 (and premium gas, which is usually much more expensive than diesel here in Michigan) I get nowhere near the EPA estimates with my diesel. I think I should have gotten the FCA 5.7 liter gas V8 instead of the V6 EcoDiesel. Again, your "used earlier 2000's" 1st gen V8 gas Toureg with air suspension and front and rear locking difs seems to be exactly what I actually needed, had I only known, and it would have involed far less of an up front cost for me. Do you have a comparison of interior volumes/capacities between a WK2 Jeep GC and a 1st gen Toureg? I passed on the Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, because its interior volume was too small. Even with my Jeep GC, I really do miss the capacity of my old 2004 Chevy Tahoe. Thanks again for the great video! I'd really appreciate hearing from you any insights re: my WK2 Jeep GC vs. your Toureg. --Vern Bennett

Great review you forgot to mention that in 2007 they T1 came with a V8 FSI which is timing-chain driven instead of timing belt like the 04-06 models and uses direct fuel injection. Also horsepower was up to 350hp or so. Fuel consumption still sucked though. I own one with only 78k on the odometer. I agree with the fact that you have to be open to concept that they are more expensive to maintain. If you can do most of the maintenance yourself you will save a lot of money. As for overall capability, the car is just amazing. I have towed up to 10,800 lbs with it and the chassis handled it just fine. One of the neatest things about the air suspension is that besides increasing the off-road capability it also self levels when you tow. Therefore, the back never squats down and it makes for a totally different more relaxed towing experience. As a future car to review on the channel I would be curious to see the Land Rover Discovery LR3 with air suspension. It would be cool to see how it handles the same off road trails you devoured with the Touareg. The LR3 and LR4s are also very over built and over designed vehicles with essentially two frames. A full frame on the bottom with a heck of a thick gage steel and then a unibody chassy essentially bolted on the full frame. I own the diesel version of thae LR3 back in Europe and between the T1 and the LR3 I think the LR3 gives a more compliant ride and towing experience however handling and highway cruising is superior in the Touareg. Thanks! I like your channel.

    -AC compressor changed

    - battery changed
    - electricty regulator changed
    - crank shaft sensor changed
    - 2 ABS sensors changed
    - 6 parking sensors changed ( 4 front and 2 rear)
    - front right air suspension noise and rattles ( probably the bearing) not fixed
    - noises from back right tyre. Unxplained
    - something is wrong with locking differential. Loud-humming noise on motorway speed. Probably the rear differntial itself is just gone.
-milage 20L/100km city and 14L/100 motorway.
-VW dealer is the worst I had to deal with.
To conclude: $5000+ paid for parts and labour and still not fully done on all fronts.
The presence on the road, driving position, off-road capabilities and comfort are probably the best out of many cars. But are these worth the hassle and cash paid?

Absolutely not. The newer models might be a little bit more reliable, but the older ones are money pits. once things go wrong, you will spend countless hours and dollars repairing this thing and it's just not worth it in the long run. If you just have a propensity for German automobiles, then you would be better off buying an old Mercedes G Wagon because you would be spending the same amount of money anyway or an old Toyota Land Cruiser. Both of those vehicles would appreciate, unlike the Touareg.

it's better without air suspension less things to go wrong and thats an expensive fix

Yes I'd only get the v8 or v10, the v6 is under-powered. Yes they were expensive when new, and are expensive to maintain. Buy one with cash, and put away a car payment every month for repair time and you'll be fine.
Personally I love my v10, very reliable and powerful, especially if you want to tow a camper or a car (there's something behind us?). Great highway mileage as well, 22-23 MPG at 75 MPH, even at 215K miles. Power wise going up I70 out of Denver it never shifts out of 6th (what hill?). But as far as off-road goes, I don't go to Moab or drive on rocky trails, so snow and gumbo mud on Oklahoma dirt roads are my main reasons for AWD,
An unusual expensive recurring problem with these is the headlights! Plan to spend $700 on a new pair every 5 years due to poor internal wiring by Veleo, plus a pair of good HID bulbs. The weaker halogen headlights are much less expensive, but not as good to see with.
With the v10 you also have two AGM batteries to replace every 3-4 years, $150 each at Pep Boys currently.
Keep the linkages on the turbos well greased - or they can pop off or break. This is the problem, not the actual turbos being fragile.
The driveshaft does have a weak point, which is the same for all models. However several rather inexpensive fix options solve that center support design problem for much less than a new driveshaft with the same eventual problem.
With the v10 you get the big brake package (Brembo 6-piston up front with 350mm rotors and 4-piston rear) with great stopping power. However, you cannot use anything less than 18" wheels with the larger brakes, so if you want to do serious off-roading, the v10 isn't for you.
A big plus of the v10 is the lack of a timing belt, timing chain, accessory belt, belt tensioners or chain guides to be concerned with. Everything is gearset driven, including the accessories.
Also note, due to 3 gallons of oil - it takes a while to warm up in the winter. And only use the recommended oil unless you want to replace cams ($$$). Oil change is about $120 if you do it yourself.

Bryan Hall you didn’t mention that all the tandem pumps leak because they had a poor design with only 3 bolts holding them to the engine, no one really wants to work on them, all have fragile wires made from soy bean (or something eco friendly), and the EGR intake systems should be cleaned every 120k miles or the engine will develop a strange rumbling at idle. Honestly, I loved my 2007, especially the exotic sound it made, but after I fixed all the leaks and stuff I was emotionally over it.

    I've owned my late 2006 Touareg 3L V6 tdi for 2 months now .
I love it . Yes it's a bit thirsty but you can't have it all can you .
I've spine issues from a Rallying crash in mid 80s , so I need comfort .
I've got the 6 speed auto in it as wall .
The car is a total delight to drive .
Mine has all the extras too . Heated seats . Sat Nav and considering the car is 06 the nav system is pretty good too .
I discovered the extra steering wheel buttons the other day . Left one switches steering wheel lights on and off . Right one turns on the heated steering wheel .
I've towed with it a couple of times too . Hitch our caravan up . It's feels almost effortless .
Twin axle car trailer with an Audi A6 no problem either .
Taken me nearly 40 years of driving to find my almost perfect car .
Only upgrade I want to do. Swap out the 19" rims for 18s with all terrain tyres .
Guessing slightly narrower wheels n tyres with help the fuel mileage a bit too .
Only rubbish bit is the huge space saver spare wheel n tyre . Which when you inflate it . The tyre unpacks itself .
The space saver to me feels heavier than the standard wheel n tyre .
Thanks for the great videos you share .
Watching you're adventure made me realise i got the right car .

You should compare a T1 and T3 in the same terrain with the same tires and then you'll be able to give your opinion, I haven't seen you doing that except comparing with other manufactures.

Thanks for a very clear 4x4 focussed review. A quick look on a Spanish 2nd hand site and there are a lot for sale, especially v10 diesels. I was able to see 3 with the air suspension option, but none had rear differential lock 🔐 😕 could be one or none in a hundred ... looking at the high mileage on these and the associated running costs, unless you have a big maintenance budget, these cars are best avoided.

Have a VR6. Totally want the diesel. I’ve gotten quite fast at doing Powertrain R&Rs on VWs

the V10 alternator is not an engine out job at all it sits in the valley of the engine. its a 4 hour job , just did it...
