The most heart-wrenching song the Carter Family sings, I think. Nanci Griffith gets the words wrong! As the Carters sing, it's: "Tell me would you love another, could you make it otherwise." tears me up every time! My favorite other than theirs, is Mike Craver's of the REd Clay Ramblers, in 1982.
This is such a sweet---and yet haunting---song. Two aspects of it have puzzled me for years. "Could you make another wife"---does she mean that the man MAKES the woman into the wife he wants? (And maybe he didn't succeed with her?) "Answer only with your eyes"---Because she thinks he can't or won't tell the truth about his feelings? Or because she doesn't really want to hear the words?
@@Q7R43 I am glad you found the good in this song. My mother taught me Carter songs when I was 13 (or so) I have never lost my love for the beauty in simplicity of Carter songs. I won't say my age on here, but I always go back to my childhood when I hear the Carter's lovely music.
Song brings tears to my eyes. First time I ever heard this song was my great grandpa singing it on a cassette tape. Such memories I have.

I heard this on "A Prairie Home Companion," in the '80s, done by somebody random, and had no clue it was a Carter family song. How great is this.
Nanci Griffith once said said that this was such a tender and loving song for its time that it took two men to write it.
great post i really like the Carter family
Yet another Carter GEM., 5 stars

"Otherwise" not "another wife". Could you make it otherwise?
