- In August 1988, on a visit to Beaconsfield Locomotive Depot, Kimberley, South Africa, one of the two national collection locomotives kept there was in steam. This locomotive, class 16E pacific no 858, was designed by A.G.Watson for high speed passenger work also bears his name. On enquiring as to why she was heating up, the Shedmaster told me she had just undergone repair in the workshops and was scheduled to make a test run to Bloemfontein the next day. So the following morning, armed with my then new video recorder, I tracked the train en route towards its destination. I apologise for the shaky images, but in those days cameras were not fitted with image stabilisers, and I didn't possess a tripod.
I worked that loco many times during my days as fireman on South African Railways. She was not the best of locos as she always seemed to have problems with her spark arrestor blocking up within a few hundred KM after leaving shed. Her sister engine 857 was a much better loco. Both locos stil survive but 858 is standing in a bit of a poor state in Kimberley. 857 is in good condition in Bloemfontein but has not steamed for many years.
Thanks for posting
Great footage thanks. I know the line and 858 very well as I worked them both for years. I cannot believe the amount of passenger coaches standing at Ollienhoutplaat. I think it has all gone now. Thanks for posting
Thank you for your great work John. The camera work was very good. Filmed records like this is all we have left to see sometimes.
that is a excellent video thank you for showing Barry
Thank you looking forward to that. It is something different and like new fresh air. All the best Barry
Awesome!!!!
Thanks for your kind words. I think at the time I filmed from that point there was a military installation there. Whilst I was there a burly Military Police Sergeant stopped his car, then asked me not terribly politely why I was filming there. It was OK after I explained the attraction, but I did wonder at the time if I was about to be clapped in irons and attested for spying. Such are the joys of taking pictures!
Hi Barry,
Many thanks for watching it. Hopefully soon I will be able to share more films from SA with you in the near future. In the meantime I hope I shall be able continue to enjoy your contributions.
Regards
John
Fantastic. Thanks.
Superb video John. Filmed 857 & 858 on Kimberley to DeArr line in 1991. Impressive sight! Thanks for sharing.
Hi John,
Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for your kind comment. I have a few more shots of SAR locomotives stashed away in my archives. When I have the time, I will edit them and put the resulting video on to You Tube.
Fantastic vid!
Wow!!! Wonder how come I only found this now???? Bloody brilliant! Some of the best 16E footage I've ever seen - what a gem!!!! What an opportunity!!! Must have been magic riding along side that!!! Thanks for posting - if you got any more SAR Steam can you put it up? Thanks!
Have been searching a lot for SA steam on RUclips, but how can it be that this video only now shows up in my recommendations?
Anyway, the 16E is the most handsome locomotive which was on the SAR roster and one of the better looking ones in general.
Especially the pacing shots do show the look trough her elegant 6 foot drivers and barframes which look very delicate like the legs of a race horse.
Sadly none of the two does run at the moment.
Pretty darn good camera work considering you didn't have an image stabiliser or tripod.
