What I love about Santana is he let’s everyone else get their shine!
I love Santana and was lucky enough to see them in concert twice in the seventies. If you haven’t seen their Woodstock performance, you really should react to it. One of the reasons is the drummer Michael Shrieve. He was the second youngest musician there. Not to mention his drum solo was unbelievable. He went on to be a well respected percussionist, composer and drummer. His resume is very impressive.
This is a cover of early Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac.
Though his covers are completely latinized and unique.

Carlos Santada does sing on some tracks, often in duet with keyboardist singer Gregg Rolie. "Oye Como Va", "Jingo", "Evil Ways" for example. On "Just In Time To See The Sun" he sings lead parts too.
Guys, you need to find the performance that launched Santana from being a band locally known in California to a worldwide sensation. I am talking about their performance of "Soul Sacrifice" at Woodstock (1969). Santana was the ONLY band to perform at Woodstock that had never yet recorded an album. That one performance changed EVERYTHING. Search it out.
Santana recorded their debut record in May 1969. They performed at Woodstock in August of that year. The album was released two weeks after that performance.
Like you said. This song is a cover . It's a Peter Green song, the founder of Fleetwood Mac.

I was so spoiled growing up with music like this. I had no idea then.
Even my mother (who was 42 when this song came out) appreciated the genius of Santana.
Lead vocals and keyboards is also fo founder of Journey with Neal Schon who also he recruited as a child teen guitar prodigy to be in Santana. This song is fire and breaks as an outro I to the intro of the Tito Puente cover by Santana of Oye Como Va. At the time Santana did Tito's cover he was not happy with their version. As time went on, he came to be more okay with it's success.
You should definitely check out the live version of "Santana - Soul Sacrifice 1969 Woodstock Live Concierto HQ" Carlos Santana was (I believe) 22yrs. old and looked like a kid. And there's an incredible story about how Carlos was high on LSD when they performed at Woodstock. Crazy...the life of a rock star in those days must have been...Fantastical. But this performance propelled him and his band into stardom almost overnight. Nice reaction thanks for sharing🔥🎸💖🎶🤗
Santana's first album was still 2 weeks away from release the day they performed at Woodstock so nobody knew who they were... but they walked out with 400,000 new fans afterwards! Greg Rollie performed in that as well!

Journey guitarist Neal Schon played guitar on 2 Santana albums, then he and Gregg Rolie formed Journey. In 2016, Neal Schon & Gregg Rolie played on Santana's 24th album Santana IV.

Neal Schon of Journey also got his start with Santana. Neal and Greg both founded Journey. Neal is a damn good guitarist!

Gentlemen, if you want to hear Santana at their finest, please check out Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock, long version. You won't be disappointed. The drummer - OMG!!! Santana tells that story that he was high on acid during the performance (he thought they were playing much later in the day and would have time to recover but it didn't work out that way) so the whole time he was playing he thought the guitar was a giant snake he was wrestling with. You can see it in the video but it's amazing he didn't miss a note!

That drummer was MIchael Shrieve. I believe he had just turned 20 years old. That performance launched Santana to worldwide fame. They were the ONLY band at Woodstock that had never released an album. That kinda changed. LOL
Hey, y'all this is a pretty good cover. I remember when it came out. I was working at Tape Hut on Preston Hwy., in Okolona. We had a stereo room and this was cranked up most of the time.
On another note, a very excellent cover of Peter Green's original is done by The Mick Fleetwood Blues Band Live, With Rick Vito on guitar and vocals.
Oh forgot to mention... contrary to the album cover the Magic Woman was not Black. She did Black Magic.
Hands down, Carlos was the best concert I have ever been to. Gregg Rolie was one of the founders of the band. Went into the R and R HOF with all of the original Santana lineup.

I was about 7 yrs old when the Santana Abraxas album came out and used to have an older brother who was in high school. He used to get in gang trouble all the time but he was cool and used to let me hang out with him sometimes. One day he was listening to this album in his room and smoking one of his weird little cigarettes that smelled terrible and I went in to hang out. Black Magic Woman was playing. I sat on the floor and picked up this album cover and it folded out. What I saw I will remember forever. That was the first time I saw t1tties, not breasts, t1tties. They were huge and on full display. I don't know what the look on my face was but my brother began laughing. I remember being scared thinking I was about to go to Hell and didn't know what to do but my brother told me it was OK and I could look if I wanted to. It was all too much for me and I think I short circuited. I don't remember what happened after that but I do remember this song playing. This is a great album and is one of my favorites along with this song. I love this song. I have the album cover framed on my wall. It always reminds of the day a little boy picked up an album cover and entered a new world. I told my friends I had become a man... at 7 years old.

Check out how different The Santana guitar tone is from the first album. He started using Mesa/Boogie amps which had just became available.
Probably my favourite cover of any song, I don't really compare the two as they are 2 different songs to me so I can enjoy both equally (well nearly equally, the original is still my favourite)

I think this song is best described as an oxymoron: Mellow intestity... it's smooth but rough. It just went places you didn't expect.

My parents were awesome about being open minded about music and art, my step dad raised me in church, but he was a huge fan of the guitar legends of the 60's and 70's, Santana and Jimmy Hendricks were his 2 favorites, it didn't occur to me until recently that, that's probably the reason he didn't complain about Metallica and Ozzy, Megadeth, Slayer, Heart, blaring from my room at all hours, I think he may have become a Kirk Hammett fan over the years , I feel blessed to have been exposed to so many artists as a kid. Makes me happy to see younger people who still appreciate the art.

You’re right about the personality of Santana’s guitar playing. There are a few that you recognise immediately because of the distinctive quality of their tone and technique, and he’s very much one of them. Knopfler is another, you should react to Telegraph Road or Sultans of Swing ( the Alchemy live versions) or Your Latest Trick, the latter if you want Ryan to swoon.

Oye Como Va is the next song that follows.
This is a Santana staple almost always played in concert and there are many versions of it. I think I'm partial to the version found on the Moonflower album. Part of that album is live, and part is studio. It's Santana in peak form. The album that follows Abraxas needs to be heard too. It has an actual name but everyone just refers to it as Santana III. Just start with the first track and keep going. You'll thank me later.
The lead singer/organ/keyboardist is the same one as the one on Journey when you did Feeling That Way/Anytime.
