Awesome to see the look at emulation on here, this is beyond impressive! I actually owned one of the original Shield TV models but bought it for the opposite reason you did, mainly wanted to have a 4K media playback and streaming box with a side of emulation. Unfortunately my experience was tainted because I ran into constant issues with any type of media consumption, as well as general usage of the Shield TV itself. Issues such as apps randomly breaking for months on end (despite updates and factory resets), both the remotes I had breaking as well, and I believe my patience was finally lost after finding there was no way to disable the Bluetooth broadcasting on later updates. No they wouldn't the sheild TV is twice as fast. Theoretically the switch could be brought up to the same speed because the GPU is the same but that doesn't account for differences in thermal design. The switch is more compact and probably much poorer at dissipating heat
@@joshualabonte8478 it doesn't matter if the switch only has half as much power, because Nintendo has the source code for GameCube and switch. They could make something that is fully optimized for switch hardware that would run fine.
@@joshualabonte8478 The Shield doesn't run at its maximum frequencies all the time. There are tests out there that show it actually thermal-throttles to similar frequencies of the Switch, and the technical documentation of the chip and of the Jetson modules states as much. (Backtrack on this thread on the late NeoGAF forum: www.neogaf.com/threads/nintendo-switch-dev-kit-stats-leaked-cortex-a57-4gb-ram-32gb-storage-multi-touch.1297191/page-180#post-228014696 to see the whole thing) Of course, the Shield TV can indeed run the CPU at higher frequencies at the cost of massively throttling the GPU, which would be good for emulation, however the Switch could probably add a mode that did a similar thing. We generally don't know what frequencies the Shield TV runs at unless they are measured from the kernel, so anything goes. For all we know, emulators like the official Wii emulator for Chinese releases might be running at Switch-like frequencies, since developers CAN set CPU frequency.
I’ve had the nvidia shield for sometime now and to be honest I barely use it, because I can get the Amazon video and Netflix on my smart tv, it’s become neglected. Honestly this video has given me plenty of good reasons to start using it again. I’m definitely gonna put some it to some good use now. Thanks great video. Jay
haha yeah that'd twist the knife for sure but I think its safe to say if it can run Saturn games no problem in addition to Gamecube and Dreamcast then it should have no issues running PS1.
I am using retroarch core pcsx rearmed and it is the closest you can get to an actual PlayStation. Every other emulator had issues with upscaling and artifacts. Not on this one, and it runs so smooth. Then you add the wonderful rewind and fast-forward utility from retroarch and it's just gaming heaven. Don't forget to set up a button for "enable hotkeys" so you can still bind all your keys for the PS but also have your utility keys for the emulators.
@@BanditTech but there are games like Tekken 3 that can't achieve perfect speed on the shield android tv with this emulatoe because emulating hi-res 448i/480i PS1 games is very demanding.

I pre-ordered the 2015 Shield Pro for $300 and love it. $139 is a steal, though I wish they still sold the Pros with 500GB storage because Android doesn't always play nice with external storage. Some apps just don't want to move over onto it or don't totally move over onto it.
I was literally going through the comments due to this very fact, trying to figure out if I was missing a detail somewhere. I really want to buy this for emulation, but it's now REALLY pricey. 😔
One can only hope its easier to setup say than Retropie on the Raspberry Pi, easier when someone has done all the hard work but going at Retropie in cold blood was a mind bending challenge I found. I find my Retropie doesn't handle N64 or DC games well into a 4K environment, Goldeneye is a damned tear and stretch lag nightmare and SM64 a laggy choppy yukfest, runs perfectly on my PC and Proj64 and using a footprint the Raspberry Pi should be dancing around but doesn't...
As an owner of a K1 tablet, I can vouch for just how bloody good these things are. Unfortunately, my battery has expanded (it still works, but the back popped off!), so that'll need replacing. But it's an absolute beast for gaming on the go. The TV version is small enough to carry with you on your travels, as well.
I have the 2015 model. Still one of my favorite devices to this day. The only issue I've had is the shield controller will sporadically lose connectivity for a few seconds but connects back. But I primarily use my Xbox one wireless controller for it now.
I love my Pro edition, the thing I didn't like was the controller... Felt great worked great... for like a month or two... I have 3 of the original bastards here all non working. I bought one of the newer ones when they launched and it still works perfectly. I tried to get Nvidia to replace at least the last one I bought but they pretty much flat refused me, no receipt no exchange lol My bad for not saving receipts I guess.
RoboTronix yeah I hear the the original controller wasn’t the greatest but since getting the newer controller that they put out I don’t wanna use anything else simply because of the volume control lol it’s really a step above everyone else in that regard
Excellent review, I actually purchased this model from Kogan and am awaiting delivery. The emulator is a bonus for me as I want it primarily for streaming the content on my various APKs..
$329 in australia.... dammit. Dont need your modded xbox, I have 4 sitting in the garage gathering dust. One used to live in the car for the kids to play games on trips though, or watch movies. It was an easy setup with a 12v-240V 300W sine inverter. Pretty cheap entertainment, and peace and quiet for the driver!
Staggers me how ripped off we get over here. We only have ourselves to blame. We keep paying. If we ALL just....you know...stopped, they're wake up and charge as the normal GLOBAL RRP. There is ZERO justification.

@@MrReddragongamingHD And that's still nearly $100AUD more than it should be. This is the thin end of the wedge. Look at things like PSVR pricing. We're only now getting close to the original USA launch price and we still get LESS in the bundle. It costs the same to MAKE. The price isn't based on production costs + a fair margin. It's purely "perceived value" within any given market, all geared to make us all stretch the money we earn.
@@005AGIMA I didn't comment on the value of the product, I just shared that you can get it cheaper than OP stated. @@MrReddragongamingHD Don't worry dude it wasn't an attack on your comment. It was an attack on "the system" of pricing. I've paid heaps MORE just to get my retro fix, because I purchased a VGC boxed A500 :D But I dont even resent that spend, because it's my childhood in a box, and paying the ORIGINAL UK RRP for the system 30 years later, is kind of cool.
The Shield doesn’t just turn a tv into a “smart” tv, it’s god-like omnipresence and infinite genius. Don’t forget, this thing will sync up with anything on your network like a breeze. For instance, if you have a mass NAS on your network with all your movies, roms, ISO’s, etc...the Shield accesses it as easy as USB storage. The Shield TV is incredibly, almost tragically overlooked. Even at $180 it is a godsend, ESPECIALLY if you’re into emulation...and we haven’t even mentioned game streaming from a gaming PC or Nvidia’s own GeForce Now service. This thing is staggering. I own all 3 Shield devices and each one retains absolutely zero buyers remorse.
I don't understand these things (and the Raspberry Pi).. I mean they are just real low budget PC's right.. I mean the emulators are nothing to do with the device itself.. I can use my desktop PC and install any emulator I want and pretty sure it will run better...
This and the Pie are 2 very different products. The pie can be what you need it to be, and is more of a development board. Need to run Kodi? A SQL server? A security camera DVR? Control a robot? Pie can do all that... The shield is purely a media center + console wannabe. It is easy to use, is small, quiet (fan less), is compatible with most current video technologies (4k, hdr etc), has an integrated Chromecast, can be controlled through Google Home/Assistant. It looks a lot nicer in a living room compared to a full PC with its keyboard and mouse. I bought one 3 years ago, and I absolutely love it. I also have a gaming PC, just not in my living room .
This is what I dreamed of on Switch. The Switch Online retro collection isn’t terrible, but we need to have more games, given that they all run great on here, therefore wouldn’t have much trouble on Switch, and it should’ve coexisted with VC instead of replacing it.
Love to see someone touch on this. The shield is a beast! I play all these already on top of steam games for new ones. Can't beat that. Don't need a console anymore! One device in the living room.....and done.
Soulja game console will be rare as fuck once Nintendo's ninjas make it so that only a handful exist in the wild. Give it a good ten years for them to become unobtanium and with the notoriety and kooky back story it'll become sought after like stadium events. Ok maybe give it thirty years and collectors will be scrambling for the artifact that saw an irrelevant rapper from yesteryear doing hard time
The Nvidia Shield is amazing, I have it also for retro gaming also... Arcade game, GBA, Nintendo DS, all that you mention and even more is playable in this little monster.... I can never be with an Nvidia Shield
I tried running emulators on mine (retroarch, snes9x, John nes) with a wired controller but the input lag was ridiculous. Couldn't get less than a half second no matter what settings I tried.
@@strike667 My TV is an older 720p Pioneer plasma. There is no "Game Mode" available on it. However, I can hook up a Raspberry Pi running Retroarch and get no perceivable input lag whatsoever without changing any settings on the TV. Also, I get the same input lag running emulators on my Android phone that I get running them on the Shield.
Purists might scoff, but the resolution/3d performance boost on all these emulators is fantastic, the games look so much better than they did on the original hardware. I definitely want one of these now.
For the same reason it costs as much as a ps4. Or in detail for this specifically: Comes with 1-2 Controllers It's portable and come with the Dock. Has support from Nintendo and other third parties. I mean the original price is 180, add an Xbox one controller (50) and realise that you're paying 70$ for an Snes like P2 controller, portability and Real support.
@UCtSvdU4EahFUJywGEg3ZDhw Actually, it does, albeit unofficial. It's named DamonPS2, and the Shield can do PS2 emulation, but obviously not at full speed.
I remember N64 emulation used to be a glitchy mess with bunch of graphics and audio plugin combinations. It seems like it is much better now. I notice gaming news channels like Outside Xbox pretty much get their N64 footage from either emulation or virtual console releases now (and rarely if ever from an original N64).
Because it entirely depends on your PC, if you have a decent CPU, but your iGPU is shit you're not going to have a very good time emulating newer systems (and even N64 games). Your GPU is just as important as the CPU when you emulate N64 and above.
Man, i've never see n the Shield for less than 190 bucks. I would buy one, but for not more than 150 max! This device is pretty old! When was the Shield TV released, 2015? Thats pretty much 5 years already. Old tech, for a high price. And they'll gonna drop the support in a heartbeat.

Just goes to show Gamecube games would run well on the Switch but Nintendo hates us
No they wouldn't the sheild TV is twice as fast. Theoretically the switch could be brought up to the same speed because the GPU is the same but that doesn't account for differences in thermal design. The switch is more compact and probably much poorer at dissipating heat
@@joshualabonte8478 On lower Res sure. Cube Emulation is amazing on pc, games can look like pc games x4 x6 Res.
Probably. Super Mario Sunshine and Mario Kart Double Dash work very decent on Dolphin for Switch
(Backtrack on this thread on the late NeoGAF forum: www.neogaf.com/threads/nintendo-switch-dev-kit-stats-leaked-cortex-a57-4gb-ram-32gb-storage-multi-touch.1297191/page-180#post-228014696 to see the whole thing)
Of course, the Shield TV can indeed run the CPU at higher frequencies at the cost of massively throttling the GPU, which would be good for emulation, however the Switch could probably add a mode that did a similar thing.
Jay
Also worth mentioning: Kodi plays 4K HDR movies out of the box on that thing.
Why in heavens would you release this on the 3rd of December 2018 without showing how it plays Playstation games?
haha yeah that'd twist the knife for sure but I think its safe to say if it can run Saturn games no problem in addition to Gamecube and Dreamcast then it should have no issues running PS1.
I use ePSXe to play PS1 games on the shield TV. It's a paid for app (about $4). But it's handled everything I've thrown at it admirably.
PlayStation will run even when you lack the power for Nintendo 64 games
I still have a madcatz mojo Android box and I'm happy with it but the shield is an awesome box as well 😎💪
Dreaming for the Switch to get as good support as this.
Don't worry, the homebrew scene increased a lot since launch
The game labeled as The Simpsons: Hit & Run is actually The Simpsons: Road Rage; other than that, fantastic video!
I’m still using this now and it’s smacking still. With GeForce and also can use Xbox 1 Game pass

At the moment, your amazon link is listing this thing for $379 😂
I pre-ordered the 2015 Shield Pro for $300 and love it. $139 is a steal, though I wish they still sold the Pros with 500GB storage because Android doesn't always play nice with external storage. Some apps just don't want to move over onto it or don't totally move over onto it.
Dolphin stutters quite a bit on most games, but it's still impressive to achieve this on a small Android TV box
They need a successor, tegra X1 albeit powerful is years old where is shield with tegra x2?
X2 was designed to be optimal in self drive vehicles, and at the moment that is where it is deployed.
It's price has gone up into the $300 range!
FYI, if you want a cheaper version of this, you can get the Ouya for $20-$50 easy. I heard this was something it was actually good for.
Wish the Nvidia Shield Pro was available. I want to do full on gaming 😭 hope Nvidia makes a Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 edition with 500 GB of storage

I never paid attention to the shield tv, but it's on my radar now. Thanks for the info!
suddenly there's a bunch of fresh shield reviews coming out... whats going on?
PS watching on my shield :)
Just a FYI, the latest nightly Retroarch on switch can overclock the switch tegra CPU up to 1700Mhz.
No GPU overclock unless on lakka though :(
PS1 games definitely run much better with the CPU OC though.
@Dob Rozner ehh a GPU overclock wouldn't really do much for retro emulation, the only difference would be that your Switch gets significantly hotter

I don't think it's amazing either, I'd rather buy a refurbished SFF PC and put a dedicated low profile GPU for the same price.
I do all this minus the 4K on my nVidia Shield Portable and at some time and point I almost got rid of it I'm so glad I kept it.🤗 Happy Holidays 🎄 🔔🎅
Is there a decent PS2 emulator that doesnt require a super computer to run?
I run mine on 7 year old hardware but I know not all pcs can run it well.
PS3 with custom firmware is the best PS2 emulator. But I've only done it on a phat which iirc comes with the EE chip.

@@strike667 My TV is an older 720p Pioneer plasma. There is no "Game Mode" available on it. Looking at this console it makes me question why people let nintendo get away with essentially creating the same console for such a higher price
Remember, the 3DS had 240p screen in 2011 and was sold for 250$
You have a screen, a large battery, charger, two controllers, more memory and the dock, which also has a chip in it.
For the same reason it costs as much as a ps4. Or in detail for this specifically:
Comes with 1-2 Controllers
It's portable and come with the Dock.
Has support from Nintendo and other third parties.
I mean the original price is 180, add an Xbox one controller (50) and realise that you're paying 70$ for an Snes like P2 controller, portability and Real support.
Because you don't need pay for emulation and ROM copyright.
Because it's nintendo, I can only imagine if it was microsoft doing this.
Can it do ps2 emulation?
@UCtSvdU4EahFUJywGEg3ZDhw Actually, it does, albeit unofficial.
It's named DamonPS2, and the Shield can do PS2 emulation, but obviously not at full speed.
