Great video. As a 2017 Shield TV owner, I was more than a bit peeved seeing as how Nvidia kept dodging all questions about a potential Dolby Vision update for the Shield TV, only to release a new and improved version with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support. They're literally the same hardware, so I don't see any reason why these features couldn't have been added to the 2017 Shield TV, but I digress.
@Brooke Stern I'm aware. I think that all of us who own the 2017 Shield TV are, and that's the issue. I expect things like this to a certain extent, but we all know that Dolby Vision can be implemented as a software update. When people asked Nvidia for two years, they kept saying that HDR10 is good enough. You live and you learn.
Basic nvidia marketing. Look at gpus and see what nvidia have done there for years, worse now that new generations only give about 10% extra performance for more than a 10% price increase.

Where does Nvidia state it is 25% faster? It doesn't! What it does state on its web site is " NVIDIA Tegra X1+ processor, SHIELD TV is up to 25% faster than the previous generation." the "up to" is what most commentators miss off.
A couple of Audible recommendations for computing/hacking... 2. Exploding the Phone: The Untold Story of the Teenagers and Outlaws Who Hacked Ma Bell - Excellent book, has a lot of really early phone history, stuff I've never heard before. Absolutely worth checking out. 1. The Dream Machine - Amazing history of early computing leading into the creation of networking and the internet. It seems like it would be really boring, but it's one of the best books I've ever listened to. Can't put this book over enough. Honorable mention: Where Wizards Stay Up Late - A really interesting read about the creation of what would become the internet, the thing that makes this book so enjoyable is that it's written back in the late 90s, so the internet was becoming a thing, but wasn't anything close to what it is today.
@referral madness Awesome, let me know what you think. Also might I highly suggest to listen to them at 1.25x speed. While the books are good, your mind (or at least my mind) will always drift to some extent, however listening to them at slightly faster speeds seems to make that less of an issue. I can't do 1.5x speed as it is too fast and makes it unlistenable, but 1.25x speed is just about perfect.
Once you got to the travel part, you had me. Last time I went away for work I had several team members in my room playing my Super Nintendo Mini. This would give us a lot more options for multiplayer games.
Switch is 4 gb of ram, 32 gb of storage, has dedicated controllers that come with the device, nothing like the switch. And at least the switch does not sell the same hardware and tells you its new. And its not.
@lone wolf Well, an updated Switch hasn't been sold yet. You never know if Nintendo wants to also go crazy and lose all their fans like Bethesda and Game Freaks.
Switched over to the 2017 Shield TV just recently, after using a RP3 for many years... This is a must have for anyone seriously into emulation that also wants to have portability on the road! Me and the GF play countless hours of old school games during downtime in our hotels while on vacation, intimacy no longer needed.

I legit want an Nvidia Shield,I love emulation and I have been interested in the features this product has. Honestly its always a blast to watch your videos sir, lots of useful information for someone who has been dabbling in emulation since the 90's! Keep up the amazing work sir!
I have 2 OG Nvidia Shield Tablets. When we bought the tablet, the only tablet on the market that beat it in any benchmarks was the intel i7 based surface tabs. A couple of batteries burnt up out in the wild (like, a fairly small amount), Nvidia did the right thing and sent everyone replacements for free. That's admirable customer service. I think the final officially updated Android OS is finally at the point where things are slowing down, so I'm at the point where I want to do custom firmware. Hardware wise, everything is still powerful as heck. Crazy to think that an almost 6 year old tablet is still so powerful. So glad I opted for the shield way back when, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Nvidia's non graphics specific products.
Excellent video. I have a 2017 Shield and it is my baby. I love this device. I was looking at the 2019 version as well. I will be honest tho, I mainly use it for media streaming (plex). I did not consider that I could also play GC, DC, etc on it. Usually when I think emulation I think SNES, NES, and GBA. So ty for opening my mind to that. I will check it out.
@Brooke Stern 500 go for streaming and play music and video files, make me laugh there, you obviously do not know everything you can do with this TV shield ... "emulator roms" not after you can emulate ps1 / dreamcast / you have 500-700mo by disc, and their ludotheque is very provided, you have for a lot of gigas! The streaming talk in, I have not used it yet but it will not be long, I think the storage will not be too big. In fact the most important is how it is done at the memory expansion level, whether it is managed as an internal memory, or external, very important, and easier to install stuff.
Still using my 2015 model. I use it a lot for my entire couch experience pretty much. Streamed PC games, native android games, lots of emulation and of course general content consumption. It’s by far the best set-top box/gaming device you can buy and personally at $200, if you’re looking for a gaming system, a set-top box and streaming device wrapped up in a great interface, it’s probably still worth it.
Nice video - I almost fell in love with that unit. Sadly Amazon sells the Nvidia Shield TV Pro in my country for 346,29 € *Which is riduculously overpriced!*

I don't have a set media player tbh so this could be it :) Great vid as usual MVG!!!!!
Awesome detailed overview of the emulation capabilities.. Now just waiting for the back ordered pro to get here since I never the shield before. (unless I win) I was originally going to get it for android box, casting, play store games type of thing. Had no idea there was this emulation quality was so good on this thing. I'm still using my OG Xbox for that.
Running android on the nintendo switch + running emulators is much more interesting because it has the same powerful SoC that can be easily and safely overclocked to 1,7 Ghz for cpu and something around 900mhz for gpu. This will drain your battery quickly but there are no overheating issues as long as you don´t dock it or use a third party dock which doesn´t cover the vents. And maybe it´s the most powerful android handheld that i´ve ever seen.
Did they keep everything practically the same to avoid needing recertification or FCC (like the Mi Box?) Almost no reason to upgrade from the 2015 or 2017 models.
I have been a Shield owner for about 3 years now. I cannot recommend it enough! It is one hell of a device for retro gamers and digital media consumers alike. Very, very good buy if you don't have one. I do have a complaint. The Shield controller is cool and has great features and a great feel but, the right control stick get a drift problem. This wakes them up and drains the battery and messes with you in game. This has happened to me with two of their controllers.
I'm very satisfied with the 2019 Pro, never got a Shield before. For years I've used Raspberry Pi's which always seem to crash or have other issues so I'm just really sick of dealing with them. Shield's are much more expensive but its worth it to me.
PSA: Even if you don't do emulation, but have a good TV, this device is a must-have. One of, if not the only set top boxes which can output 4k HEVC in 10bit HDR without any issues. You can watch your movies to your TV's full potential with this.
Great episode, as always. If I weren't having to save money for other things, I'd definitely look into this device. Sounds like it'll be fine waiting half a year or so, though. One device I was hoping you'd look into are the "gaming phones", especially the Asus ROG Phone 2. Seems like it could be a great device for emulating many older handheld platforms, including the DS/3DS games with the twin screen dock and Kunai controllers (which can dock onto the side of the phone, switch style). I don't know if it has enough horsepower to power many of these emulators, though.
Thanks. I just got an nVidia Shield basic; the one that looks like a toilet paper tube. I like it for the snappy response when viewing RUclips. But I want to get the Pro version so I can set it up with Plex server for my media. The basic only runs 32-bit OS, and can't run Plex. I appreciate the this video for informing me the specs on the 2019 version.
I love your vids and you have unlimited cred in my book. But...2160p60! God Da-I SAY GOD DAMN!!! I would honestly love to know who watches at that resolution. My poor 2015 macbook pro is skipping and lagging at that. I turned it down and all is well, but I had to make a self-important comment, nonetheless. PLEASE KEEP MAKING AWESOME VIDS!
I still have the 2015 model, and love it.. tho recently moved and gained a extra room that will be a game room, so thinking of moving the 2015 model to that room and getting the new model for my living room.
interesting just how far emulation has come since 2000 , and the amount of devices it is running on,. but i suppose since linux/GNU open souce this has helped a lot.
I really love the theme song but there is an annoying clip in the high register of the snare that I have noticed on my monitors. Just looking out for ya! Keep up the great vids.
You should do a video on building a unit that is as compact as the nvidia shield, cheaper, or more expensive. would love to see the progress and the hardships.
so there is no benefit to getting the 2019 version, the new enhancements won't benefit the emulation at all which is a shame but believe me the price of the shield tv is well worth the cost compared to buying legacy hardware and the retro games outright plus the convenience of not having to hook up your old consoles, it's all in one, you are saving thousands. I've never heard of that dreamcast emulator that you mentioned? I use raicast, i use the rest of the Emulators you mentioned plus I use the John emulators for the older gameboy/nes/snes stuff too it's a great emulating machine and nothing beats it on the market.
As far as I know there are no properly working ps3 emulators yet and ps2 emulation still has many flaws, so that would be a challenge on this thing considering it's speed (but then again I'm no expert on emulation, some genius should definitely be able to get it working)
@@prsplayer210 not true. you don't really need a high end PC, actually depends on the game, for example red dead redemption needs a beast PC and devil may cry doesn't.
@@dennisjassmann7584 I don't think we will get ps3 emulating for a while yet on android, not for a long time anyway, the fact that it's starting to run ps2 games is good enough for now.
@@HUYI1 Yeah kind of sad when you think about it, but then again the PS3 was quite difficult to code on (like MVG showed last video) and the filesizes of the games don't exactly help it. Even the Xbox 360 emulation is still relatively in its infancy, so it will take at least another console generation before we see some real progress there i think.
I got the 2017 Shield TV at Best Buy for $199. I got the remote, and controller bundle. I felt I just had to try the controller out. It's fine, I just wish the home menu button, wasn't with the start button, on the bottom. All the time I go to pause a game, and it goes to the menu. Oh well, still not bad
I'm waiting patiently for a brand new Shield TV, not an old recycled model. I'll keep using my 2017 model for the time being. It's an amazing emulation device (among other things).
Its actually much more difficult to make existing hardware run better through updates, than to just make a new model, with new internals, and resell it to make new profit. Its kinda counter intuitive to do what the home consoles do and just rely on optimization to run games on basically 10 year old hardware. In fact, companies like sony and microsoft LOOSE money on the console sales, in fact I dont think any modern console from either of those companies has turned a profit. however they make their money back (and more) through game sales FOR said console. Its a really confusing market in general. And thats why our opinions are kinda meaningless heresay. We truly dont understand the politics.
I assume a software update couldn't add Dolby Vision, full Atmos support & AI upscaling. This new model I find is more for streaming video with high end home theater. Many find the new remote better too, you can program it to control volume on audio receiver. I also hear the 2019 can work as a Plex Media Server but I don't know much about that(I just use Kodi).
I have the tablet version hooked up to my TV via a HDMI mini to HDMI Cable. I use an Xbox One S Controller for Input. My only Gripe is that the battery at this point, Drains Faster than it charges.
I got mine for 50€, it still had plastic film on it😊 u was just looking around at Facebook market place and yes:) and it was 500gb version😁 controller was slightly used or even not at once😊 2015 shield:)
EPSXE is really good, I played through Megaman Legends 2 on it. I did find I had to switch between 2 render's at the point where 1 of the dungeons gets flooded with water. 1 Renderer runs better overall but at the flooded part it causes issues, the otherone is a bit slower but doesnt suffer the issues the opengl renderer does.
My dog liked the old Shield remote, that’s for sure!
that old remote with the battery was utter crap. The very FIRST time i changed the dead battery out the damn thing broke and never worked again lol

Dude I love the New Nintendo Swi- I mean Shield TV
They literally use the same processor.
So in theory the switch should be able to emulate all these consoles despite what the commentary says
@@malant2719 No BRO that incorrect.
My hacked Switch emulates all these except Dolphin but hey got a WiiU for that which does GC and Wii better
@referral madness We'll shit maybe it does...
Have you tried the 2019 remote on the 2017 model? They're supposed to be supporting it in an update. Not sure if the update has been pushed out...
I've been thinking about getting one for a while now, maybe its time to finally buy one :)
Love this video. Keep up the fantastic job you do!
Just renamed it and a bump here and there and pay this man his 💰!
I don't use ePSXe I use FPse. I bought it about 9 years ago on the playstore. Still works brilliantly today.
when you started that audible sponsor, i couldn't help but think of Linus for some reason
That with all the other ads I couldn't help to think that he needs money to pay for all the shit in the background
Is Linus a sell-out?
goodmaki pretty much
goodmaki also a lot of yt channels are forced to do this to keep making money for their channels because RUclips won’t monetize them
MARK
would be a nice xmas present! Good luck everyone!
Did they keep everything practically the same to avoid needing recertification or FCC (like the Mi Box?) Almost no reason to upgrade from the 2015 or 2017 models.
I have the first Nvidia Shield tv, it still works great, I only use it for RUclips, Netflix and Kodi, nothing else. But I love this device.
that tony hawk clip took me wayyyy back lol
16gb and 3gb of ram?
C'mon at the very least, double these specs SMH
mame also runs great on these shields, even on my 2015 model
Would be one hell of a birthday gift to win this Shield Pro!
Thanks for the Redream Android hint!! Didn't even know it was out.... Lol
yeah I've never heard of this emulator I want to check it out to see if it's any better than raicast.
Redream works super good on the Nvidia Shield with no glitches in games unlike Reicast
Thank you so much MVG 👍
I love your vids and you have unlimited cred in my book. But...2160p60! God Da-I SAY GOD DAMN!!! I would honestly love to know who watches at that resolution. My poor 2015 macbook pro is skipping and lagging at that. I turned it down and all is well, but I had to make a self-important comment, nonetheless. PLEASE KEEP MAKING AWESOME VIDS!
I still have the 2015 model, and love it.. tho recently moved and gained a extra room that will be a game room, so thinking of moving the 2015 model to that room and getting the new model for my living room.
Thanks for the information and break down, have a great day
interesting just how far emulation has come since 2000 , and the amount of devices it is running on,. but i suppose since linux/GNU open souce this has helped a lot.
I really love the theme song but there is an annoying clip in the high register of the snare that I have noticed on my monitors. Just looking out for ya! Keep up the great vids.
Every RUclips video was giving the Shield good marks for over 2 years.
I still haven’t bought one yet....
You should do a video on building a unit that is as compact as the nvidia shield, cheaper, or more expensive. would love to see the progress and the hardships.
ThirtyOne Fifty That’s basically impossible without getting some very custom parts.
This seems like a solid emulation platform, something I'd like to pick up when it drops to around £79/$99.
that will be like 10 years from now, the OG shield still goes for like 140
@@ratboyOwO thinking used then. Wow, that's a long time to maintain a price point. Another reason to get one, junk doesn't generally hold value
Black friday deals yoooo
Einhander! I thought nobody else remembered that game! :D
so there is no benefit to getting the 2019 version, the new enhancements won't benefit the emulation at all which is a shame but believe me the price of the shield tv is well worth the cost compared to buying legacy hardware and the retro games outright plus the convenience of not having to hook up your old consoles, it's all in one, you are saving thousands. I've never heard of that dreamcast emulator that you mentioned? I use raicast, i use the rest of the Emulators you mentioned plus I use the John emulators for the older gameboy/nes/snes stuff too it's a great emulating machine and nothing beats it on the market.
Great video as usual. Yes please, a Saturn video next!
Awesome! I would like to see a ps2 and ps3 emulation running on this! Definitely loving the videos
As far as I know there are no properly working ps3 emulators yet and ps2 emulation still has many flaws, so that would be a challenge on this thing considering it's speed (but then again I'm no expert on emulation, some genius should definitely be able to get it working)
ps2 runs okay, ps3 emulation cant be done on high end pcs well
@@prsplayer210 not true. you don't really need a high end PC, actually depends on the game, for example red dead redemption needs a beast PC and devil may cry doesn't.
$199 is really cheap and good value . Well it is in the uk anyway. This little guy is a beast
I'm waiting patiently for a brand new Shield TV, not an old recycled model. I'll keep using my 2017 model for the time being. It's an amazing emulation device (among other things).
I am always amazed by the genius that builda emulators.
they should have software update for optimization instead of this, well IMO
You can't just create performance out of thin air. It's not a matter of "opinion", it's a matter of what's physically possible.
spawn calibur old model can run pms, and do full atmos.
For that price and that kind of performance i think its more than worth it.
I think Nvidia are smart making a new version without harming the previous. I am glad staying with 2017 version.
Enjoy your videos about retro games I checked your I'm not good at retro I like playing keep up the good work 👌👍👍🙏
I have the tablet version hooked up to my TV via a HDMI mini to HDMI Cable. I use an Xbox One S Controller for Input.
My only Gripe is that the battery at this point, Drains Faster than it charges.
Thanks for the great video! I bought a shield tv last year because of your video on it, glad I didn't buy the pro
Modern Vintage Gamer
tekken 3 runs perfect on my snes classic mini, using the psx bios from my psp.
that does the trick ;-)
I got mine for 50€, it still had plastic film on it😊 u was just looking around at Facebook market place and yes:) and it was 500gb version😁 controller was slightly used or even not at once😊 2015 shield:)
Great video as always 😀
EPSXE is really good, I played through Megaman Legends 2 on it.
I did find I had to switch between 2 render's at the point where 1 of the dungeons gets flooded with water. 1 Renderer runs better overall but at the flooded part it causes issues, the otherone is a bit slower but doesnt suffer the issues the opengl renderer does.
