I've tried many different boxes, sticks over the years and always come back to the Shield, it's still faster, smoother, plays all video files, emulators, Nvidia games , Stadia and much more

infiniti37G: You don't have stuttering during video playback using an external USB stick or USB hard drive? My Shield Pro stutters a little bit during video playback. I've had my Shield replaced under warranty. I've tried different drives. I've tried all their different vid apps (Kodi, Plex, VLC, etc). I've tried different video bit rates. Nothing makes it go away. Even with Android screen casting from my phone, there's still the occasional stutter during moments of high on screen motion. It's driving me friggin crazy. I can't be alone here. The whole reason I bought the highest end Android TV box was to avoid this kind of thing. The irony is that my five year old crappy Roku plays the videos just fine. Any thoughts?

I purchased the original SHIELD Pro when it was first released (in 2015?) and have always called it the single most value I've ever gotten out of a tech purchase. I used it for Kodi, then as a Plex server and living room gaming/emulation box and it was fantastic. I've even been impressed at the continued software update support, saying that it just gets better with time. Then the most recent update came, with ads and autoplay video on the home screen. It's been turned off ever since. Shame.

We DO need a new Nvidia Shield TV that can blow these new competing SOC's outta the competition 'cause all these new mobile devices are really showboating this aging platform with the newer quicker technology's coming out these days.
Even that Amazon Fire Cube is so absolutely quick and responsive that it makes me feel like it must be something wrong with my Nvidia Shield. 😕
That's how quick it is. *IT'S ABOUT TIME FOR AN UPGRADE, NVIDIA!*
It'll also be a good idea to give us techies some upgrading paths with accessories this time. At least, give us an m.2 slot for an NVMe SSD drive. Keep it small and energy efficient. AND keep the AI upscaling.

Honestly the Shield TV is aging and needs either a refresher or a price cut, probably both. Turn the current line into "Shield TV Lite" and slash the price down 50 bucks and make a new cutting edge line with X2 or Xavier under the hood for a pricier model and they'll keep being the most sought after TV box.

Totally agree, the hardware is the same as the 2017 model. It just added support that could have been added to the 2017 model like Atmos and Dolby Vision. Not sure if you can get those on the 2017 model. The chip that they claimed 25 percent faster was the exact same one in the 2017 model. I'm surprised there wasn't a class action lawsuit over that. That's why it will never be able to do HDR for RUclips. It's a CPU limitation because Google uses their own codec (VP9 or something similar naming wise) and the Shield can't handle the codec with HDR.
With that said it's still the only media player that can handle high bitrate 4K DV or HDR10 content over my network and bitstream all audio formats in existence. The only thing that comes close is the Apple 4K TV and its biggest weakness is it converts all audio to PCM, you can't bitstream Atmos. There is a difference, I notice it when watching the same movie on both using Plex. You can fall back to Dolby Digital but I think that's the only audio format you can bitstream. I get apple doing it as PCM will always work, which is kind of Apples thing (another reason I prefer the shield, side loading apps) but to not allow an option to do so is absurd IMO. It does convert SDR content to Dolby Vision and doesn't hose up the colors which is a plus for SDR content.

Yes, although the CPU limits there are "hacks" that help this device still achieve high fps rates, especially if the emulator supports multithreading.
Since where most limited perfomance is if it only supports one thread.
Hope they upgrade to a CPU like tegra xavier or tegra orin in future nvidia shield tv.

Plus I have had some good luck with the AetherSX2 emulator on my Shield TV Pro. Same here, I have an Nvidia Shield TV Pro and I love this tiny box. I use it for Stadia, too and it plays almost every emulator I want to play, except for Wii and especially for Tasunoko vs. Capcom. So I decided to buy a Lenovo Yoga Tab 13 with a fast processor (Snapdragon 870 and 8GB RAM on WQHD resolution with HDMI IN and HDMI Out) so I can output the video via HDMI to my 47" TV and play it on HD (2-3 times internally upscaled depending on the game) and with a USB PS3 controller with no lag. If Nvidia brings out a successor I am going to buy it although the tablet's price is almost four times of the Nvidia Shield TV Pro. But it can do so much more than this so it's a good investment.

My "conspiracy theory" is that the existence of the Shield is why a TV-only Switch does not exist. No one would by a Shield if the Switch would be the same price as this thing (aka same price as Switch Lite), especially if it could also run streaming apps like Netflix.
Conspiracy n°2: Netflix app is not on the Switch as part of the agreement with nVidia, as again a Switch would make that thing less appealing to a lot of consumers. I mean, I remember reading that the Netflix app was ready back in 2017/18 but it never got released.

I loved the shield TV from day one (early adaptor to the UK from the US) however since ads were added to the home screen, I've not used the device. I switched to a 4K Roku for RUclips, Netflix etc and I use Mister for retro gaming these days. I'll probably switch to an XBox series X for higher end emulation, such as Dreamcast and Gamecube. Such a shame the Nvidia haven't updated the hardware in years and also decided to force ads on its customers.

Would it make sense to use something like a Galaxy S9 or S10 phone with a USB C to HDMI dongle? They pack a great Snapdragon and a decent GPU and used devices are often cheaper than the Shield. The S9 was my daily phone device until earlier this year and absolutely could handle any of these tasks with ease.

Man, I feel like too much of my life is spent either avoiding ads, paying to not see ads, or installing software to defeat ads. I realize that this is my issue with ads and that not everyone feels this way however, I feel that the use of android as an OS on the shield is generally a clear and easy way for mining data to serve those ads. The idea that ads would come sooner or later seems logical given the platform and Google's business model. That's fine and it's why we have options, it's just not for me.

Biggest complaint is the device doesn't support always on VPN. So I peer to peer stream on a second device.

it's really time for a proper shield upgrade. even if it is still very good, it is already getting old (2015 , 2017 , 2019 with hardly noticeable difference in performance). but fear that this year it will not be anything because of chip shortage. and the china android box for 50 euros are not far away from the performance of the shield and that at 1/4 of the price of the shield.

I have a Shield TV on the way to me today. I mainly purchased it for local streaming because it's the only current solution for bitstreaming lossless audio. Beyond that I will try it as a Roku replacement because I'm getting tired of their quirks. As my secondary streaming platform, I have Apple TV 4K boxes, and I still use Physical media when it comes to movies. As far as gaming goes, can I play Dos based games on this? I was hoping I could because it's getting harder to on the Mac with Apple removing 32 bit support from the OS, and there are games I've gotten from GOG that were never updated to run in a 64-bit runtime. Either way though, gaming is secondary for me, and this will be intended for media for the most part.

I am looking for a RTX3050 laptop to replace my shield for native H.265 support without relying on CPU or having to transcode. Since it is impossible to get desktop cards, a low end laptop with a 3050 and a good video out is probably my best shot at getting what I am looking for.

You can tweak the audio options to "asynchronous" and you will get stuttering FMV sound and proper gameplay sound. If you stick to "stretched" you get passable FMV sound but weird slowdowns with gameplay sound. Out of the two, Curse of Darkness was closest to full speed.
