the "storage space" hole in the floor of your kitchen, isnt just a storage space. Its main purpose is actually a trap door access into the crawl space underneath your house. You need to have such a trap door somewhere for building maintenance, such as for checking for water damage or doing a termite sprays etc, Japanese houses have a different structure to western houses and they are often built on short "stilts", which can rot if not enough airflow occurs underneath the house or the soil underneath is too damp or humid (very common in Japan). Should check with a carpenter whether you should actually remove this functional component of your house or relocate it elsewhere, as you might need access to the floor space in future, if you want to keep your house maintained and healthy.

      @remka2000 Год назад +2

@@4everaJfreak We have a similar one in our house in Fujisawa. It’s a storage space (think rice, maybe bottles of water etc.) that is easily removable (it’s not screwed or anything) and is also the access to the crawl space under the house. I think it’s very common here, I see similar things at friends places. And yeah, the house is elevated from the ground, about 50cm. There might be other ways to access the crawl space though, depending on how it’s built.

As an avid traveller I beg that even if you eliminate the large closets, please put in some small closet areas in the bedrooms so that patrons can hang their clothes to allow the suitcase wrinkles to fall out. I always take at least one or two dresses for more formal dinners and trying to hang them on curtain rods or the tops of doors can suck.

Since it’ll be an Airbnb you don’t need a tall fridge, just one of those that are only half-height that can be tucked under the countertop between cabinets. That’s what they do in small apartments in France. Saves space, avoids having a huge appliance blocking what is already a pretty cramped space and people on a short stay will never fill it up.

I think this will turn out looking great but I'm not understanding why, if the expectant usage is Air BnB, that desks in each room is the selected course of action. If I was coming to use this for any length of time I'd rather have closet space, even if they're expecting Japanese businessmen...it doesn't really make sense to me. @eijiiwakawa7269 2 года назад +39

Thanks for the video - it's really interesting! BTW The hole in the floor is actually used so that the wooden supporting posts underneath the house can be inspected for rot. It tends to double as an underground storage because, well... why not! (As an inherently cool part of the house, it was traditionally used to keep produce cold). Your attic should have similar basic access, so that beams supporting the roof can be checked for rot too (both are a legal requirement in modern Japanese house builds).
Japanese houses are (infuriatingly) cold by design- as it's such a humid country, air circulation is important to stop wood rot. Insulation can cause condensation to build up in areas and cause rot if not done right. Something to keep an eye on (although everything looks pretty good from the video)...
Looks like an amazing place though - I look forward to following your progress!

Fyi, neon lights can be noisy. Outdoors you won't notice the humming sound they make but in an enclosed small space it may be annoying. Just check what you are having made is quiet enuf for indoor use. 👍

Thanks for showing us the start of the project. In America, this type of complete do over would take months so this speed amazes me. The light flooring will totally brighten the space. Good choice.

Those big windows with the big drop & nothing to keep a person from falling if he/she lose balance worries me. It would be great to put something there for safety. That balcony looks potentially unsafe (rotted?) but I think you mentioned someone is looking into it. Maybe put a little area for a smoker outside by the aircom? one of those ashtrays with the sand in it that can be cleaned out. Great series, I'm loving it.

I'm amazed at the process so far! Whenever I hear people getting renovations done in my area, its almost always double whatever ETA they estimate for. The builders really take their sweet time, no matter if it's a couple grand project or hundred grand.

You should make a tsuboniwa in that outdoor space where the aircons are, with some nice wooden panels to cover the other house and the air conditioners.
Would be a great view from the inside to have a bit of connection to nature

I started watching your videos in 2014, I believe. The first video I watched was the Sailor Moon maxi pad haul XD, and you were the first RUclipsr I started following, might I add. Because of you, and all the priceless information you provide through your videos, I thought… “hey, maybe I CAN go to Japan, maybe it’s not as hard as I think it is”. It had always been a dream of mine, and so I did in 2016. Best time of my life. So thank you Sharla. Thank you for showing me that it is not impossible to make my dreams come true, and that the only thing I need is not to listen to voices that say that I can’t do something.
When I heard you are turning this into an Airbnb I was thrilled. My husband and I are thinking about visiting Japan in December/Jan. You better believe I’ll be looking this Airbnb up 😊. Fantastic job ladies! Can’t wait to see the result and, hopefully, stay there.

Wow, that is certainly a lot of progress! I love the open floor-plan. I was a fan of that retro kitchen, but those units you showed us do look amazing. It will be so nice to have everything fresh and new. My house is also a bit of a construction zone right now, and watching your process is keeping me so inspired!

You can make a lot of money by offering long term stays on airbnb with high speed internet, router in the house etc. I've lived in airbnbs around the world since 2018 and those things are quite important. Especially now more people are remote. An ok size fridge is also helpful.

So exciting!! I had 2 ideas lol. #1 in that closet space in the upstairs bedroom (not the desk/window one) you could maybe get like a small loveseat couch that can fold out into a small bed and tuck it in there. Since it will be an Airbnb, extra sleeping space is always good I think!! #2 for kitchen area, you can. Get tables that fold down, or can like expand a bunch, also for space saving. I think it's only sometimes that tables are really used in Airbnb, so having a adjustable option would be good. Hope these are helpful ideas! Good luck with it all! My family has been waiting to plan a trip and we would love to stay here! ❤️😊🎉

You should put Star Jasmine across the fence near the AC units. Its EXTREMELY lovely strong sweet floral smell when it flowers, hardy af, evergreen and will fill in the entire fence to be green with little white flowers :D Just put them in pots below the fence and train its tendrils up and thru the fence. You can cut it back every yr to maintain, its very easy, just a pair of scissors will do it.

Japan is like the complete opposite to New Zealand when it comes to building. It’s so slow here. Whenever you see a building site you always see half of the workers just standing around talking. And they don’t work on weekends and only work for like 6 hours a day unless it’s raining, they don’t work when it’s raining either. What they’ve done so far would of taken 2 weeks in New Zealand. It also takes a long time for anything to actually start getting built. There are shops near my house and on the back it says “2018” in Roman numerals because that’s when they were supposed to be built by. Construction didn’t start until 2020. Everything is so slow here.

Love, love, love the navy with neon skyline accent wall idea. You can have Tokyo Blue Hour all evening long. Maybe the name of your airbnb could riff off that.

Please show more of this renovation of the house you bought because it's intriguing. It combines both Japan and construction, both of which interest me . Thank you for the videos.
