Permanent Alimony should not be a thing unless the other person became permanently disabled and is no longer able to work due to it before the divorcee started. People should be required to get a job and earn their own money. If they choose not to go to college (before or after marriage and before or after divoricee) and not to get a degree to make even MORE money, then that is their own fault. It should not be the EX's fault and should not then force the EX to continue to pay them alimony because they refuse to be self proficient.
