There is something you must know about ND filters, before you start using them. Digital ND filters are intended to emulate and imitate real ND filters. It is done for convenience, not to carry around a pack of real filters, attach, detach, however, this is done, at the cost of additional processing, added on top of the existing processing. They will never be the same as real filters, made of tinted glass.
In Photography, ND filters are used to reduce the amount of light, to the camera, allowing you to increase time of exposure for these artistic long exposure photos, or to use the 180-degree shutter rule, where your shutter speed is set to twice the frame rate to create lively cinematic smooth videos with a gentle and light motion blur, that suggests action and movement.
Long exposure photography comes with caveats - it demands as a mandatory accessory a tripod, a remote shutter because no matter how you "stabilize" your hands there will always be a small shake, that adds up during long exposure shots. If you can rest your phone so it doesn’t move at all, and use timer to trigger the shutter, this is a decent workaround.
In photography, you must understand the underlying math of the exposure triangle - ISO, Aperture, Exposure time, and the concept of 1 stop. 1 stop more - 1 stop higher ISO or Wider aperture, mean twice as more, as current value, one stop less, means half the light. ND Filters exploit this to achieve their thing. When compensating for a an ND Filter, you must have understanding of the Exposure triangle - ISO, Aperture, Time of exposure and use this. First to define how a the exposure triangle works. You have a balance of how the photo is exposed based on the 3 values, ISO, Aperture, Time of exposure. When one side of the triangle is changes you must compensate with another one or 2 to restore the balance. 1 Stop change on ISO means i stop change in in time or aperture to compensate for and restore the balance. If Exposure if higher, can compensate by lowering your time of exposure or you aperture, or both, or if your exposure is lower, you can open you aperture or increase time of exposure or both. Lets use 10 stops filter for easier. Actually the math with stops is that one stop, doubles or reduces the light in half. With ISO it is not double the ISO value double the light sensitivity. ISO follows the same rule, one stop doubles, one stop reduces in half. However scale of ISO increments, allow fine adjustments, because the next value is a fraction of a stop. fro example between ISO 500 and ISO 640 it is the next position in the scale, but this represents a fraction of a stop. ISO is very powerful adjustment when you are managing the exposure triangle when you use ND filters, but one that must not be taken lightly and used carefully and wisely. Remember the Idea of ND filters is to increase exposure time, time should be your primary adjustment when balancing ND filters. Take your current values as baseline. Next stop on the scale up, after the baseline doubles the light, the previous stop on the scale, before the time baseline, reduces light in half. 10 stops ND filter can be compensated by sharply increase one of the elements in the exposure by 10 stops - if it is time - this is as intended, this creates the long exposure photos, if it is ISO or aperture, it is justified to do the math for a given time of exposure, which is done automatically for you. Sharply boosting only ISO defeats the purpose of ND filter. Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has fixed aperture, so aperture is constant and cannot be changed. We cannot change it so we exclude it from our approach. Now we balance exposure and time and ND filter value. If the Image cannot be balanced, or looses details and dynamic range, you can try change the ND Filter value. If the image appears as too light, after you balance it, try denser filter - Higher ND value - bigger number. if it is too dark or looses details try less dense filter - lower ND value - lower number. One trick with ND filters is that you mus always use the lightest filter, the lowest ND Value, you can balance your image with, to preserve maximum details and preserve maximum dynamic range. The total amount of correction you must introduce in our example wit 10 stops filter - ND 1000, is 10 stops to restore the balance. it is up to you if you will compensate using multiple parameters in the exposure triangle that sum up to 10 stops, or one parameter with 10 stops, this is something you must figure out by experimenting, until you achieve the desired artistic effect. Remember, if you cannot make it with this ND Filter, change the ND filter. Always use the ND filter with lowest ND Value, that gives you the effect you want, to preserve maximum details and dynamic range.
ND 2 - 1 stop - 1/2 of the available light will hit the lenses - this is where more relaxed sunglasses are found
ND 4 - 2 stops - 1/4 of the available light will hit the lenses - this is where denser sunglasses are found
ND 8 - 3 stops - 1/8 of the available light will hit the lenses
ND 16 - 4 stops - 1/16 of the available light will hit the lenses
ND 32 - 5 stops - 1/32 of the available light will hit the lenses
ND 64 - 6 stops - 1/64 of the available light will hit the lenses
ND 128 - 7 stops - 1/128 of the available light will hit the lenses
ND 256 - 8 stops - 1/256 of the available light will hit the lenses
ND 512 - 9 stops - 1/512 of the available light will hit the lenses
ND 1000 - 10 stops - 1/1000 of the available light will hit the lenses
To be clear, this is Binary math, represented with decimal values this is how the math works:
ND2 (2^1) blocks 1 stop of light, allowing 1/2 of the light through.
ND4 (2^2) blocks 2 stops of light, allowing 1/4 of the light through.
ND8 (2^3) blocks 3 stops of light, allowing 1/8 of the light through.
So, for ND64, which is 2^6, the filter allows 1/64th of the available light to pass through.... .... ND2 (2^10) blocks 10 stops of light, allowing 1/1000 of the light through.
Speaking of sunglasses, this is a general approximation, to vie you a general idea, what you can expect. This relates to sunglasses found on consumer market. By consumer market I mean, just go to any store and reach and grab a pair of your liking. I exclude specialized cases.
While the digital ND feature in the app is designed to simulate this effect, there are inherent differences compared to using a physical ND filter. A real ND filter affects the light before it reaches the sensor, providing a certain quality and consistency that software simulation may not fully replicate, especially regarding the texture and depth of the image. Software-based solutions often work by processing the image after it's captured, which might not yield the same dynamic range or detail retention.
However, the advantage of a digital ND feature is the convenience and flexibility it offers. You can experiment with different strengths of the effect without needing to carry around multiple filters. It's also possible that for many practical purposes, especially in casual or on-the-go photography, the digital ND feature could provide a satisfactory outcome. One advantage in this is that you can make ND Filter "Stacking". Place a tinted glass filter on the phone, and then choose to imitate another filter. This allows for very long exposure during broad daylight.
Keep in mind that stacking physical and digital filters reduces quality and details because of the additional processing of the digital ND filters, imitating Physical filters, because its ads on more layer of processing on top of the currently existing processing. Also keep in mind, that when you are stacking ND filters, both physical ND filters or Physical and Digital ND filters, the ND Filters react differently. if you stack ND 1000 with ND 128, you will not have the effect of ND 1128, you will have the effect of ND 128 000 filter, so be careful, how you stack them.

@@ShinobiDiabolik you're absolutely right. Even if my vote won't change anything I doubt Samsung do something with that. I heard it's a hardware issue. They made an app called camera assistant and it only fixes the speed reaction between pressing the button and catching the picture but.. picture is still blurred. I tested Samsung in panning photos. It's a style of photography when you follow the subject by you holding your camera then picture is sharp and background is blurred - it's DSLR example but in S23 Ultra camera it works pretty good - not enough but still many details. Blurred pictures are only with the objects that are moving in normal style (not panning shot).

I am using real physical ND filters, pieces tinted glass filters.
    There are my reasons:
Imitation of ND filters with vs real ND filters real tinted glass.
Digital ND filters in S23 Ultra are good idea, but they have severe limitations:
    only 12 megapixels
time for exposure between 0.5 seconds and 4 seconds
available ISO for use is between 50 and 800
EV precompensation is not adjustable, but it is set on the correct position -2
One layer of processing is added on top of the existing photos - the processing of the Digital ND filter
With real, physical ND filters, i have the full range:
I can choose between 12 and 50 Megapixels
time for exposure between 1/24053 seconds and 30 seconds
available ISO for use is between 10 and 3200
EV precompensationfor use is between -2 and +2
Less processing, of the image. The digital ND filters processing is not performed
With this said, This feature is not a gimmick. This is a great feature to have at your disposal and it will allow you great photos. There are great shots that can be taken with exposures between 0,5 and 4 seconds. Some of my best shots are 2 seconds exposures.

    • @ShinobiDiabolik
      @ShinobiDiabolik 7 месяцев назад

      @estacaotech, Hello,
The additional layer of processing related to Digital ND Filters, does have negligible to insignificant impact of quality, which should not be concerning you. It is mainly around Light dynamics. Lets say it this way, on equal setups:
Same values of physical vs digital ND filters
      Same ISO exposure value
      Same EV precompensation value
      Same exposure time
Real physical ND filter will produce better and wider dynamic range compared to Digital ND filters. Processing may compensate for this in processing, but the real physical filter will allow better wider dynamic range as natural part of the photo, without any processing or compensation in processing.
