    Great set of instructions. Suggestion: make sure you first figure out which way up barrel needs to sit. They aren’t symmetrical I discovered. You have to check you are putting it in so the twist to shut is logical and towards the jamb.

    Having just fitted one of these I would definitely recommend drilling a pilot hole before using the flat wood bit. The dead bolt I had (from Screwfix) had a square body similar to a latch case. This needed a 25mm hole to house it, which on a 35mm wide door didn't leave much room for tolerance. If you go straight in with the wood bit its almost guaranteed it will go off line. I used a 2.5mm drill bit first and it really helped 👍

    Great video! For those of you who think you can't install a lock, or think it's difficult, it's really not! I installed my very first mechanical lock (The type with a push button keypad) on my door myself, never having done so before, or having any great DIY skill whatsoever, and it looks really professional! Just make sure you have the correct tools, understand the instructions, and have some patience with a little perseverance, and you'll do great things!
    By the way, that Blu Tack trick is great, I wish I'd have known about it a couple of weeks back. Instead, to make the mark, I used the wife's lippy :D

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  7 лет назад +1

      Exactly my point! It's not difficult if, as you say, you get the correct tools, and tackle it step by step. Thanks - the Blu Tack thing was a bit of a spur of the moment idea (I haven't done it before) - but I'm pretty chuffed that it worked so well. Lippy seems to be a popular trick, and I guess works equally well.

    Done a few of these now and you’re right about the feeling of satisfaction getting the first one done. I’ve invested in those self-cantering drill bits as I’ve realised how important it is to be bang on centre (like with hinges). I’m still very slow though. Watched the chippy doing these on our house refurb a few years ago ie the handles as well and he was speedy. Reckon he could’ve done them in his sleep :-)

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  6 лет назад

      Ansab Rashid Hi Ansab. Thanks, really pleased you like them! Chisel sharpening is something of an art form, and one that I'm far from perfecting myself!! I use a Trend CraftPro diamond whetstone, and lapping fluid to lubricate the stone whilst sharpening. That said, for a really pro demo on how to sharpen your chisel there are some great RUclips videos out there, like this one ruclips.net/video/3QZtNnI7bA0/видео.html. Speaking of future videos, I am planning a video shortly on sharpening your kitchen knives. Keep an eye out for it in a month or two. Thanks again!

  • @RogerHolden
    @RogerHolden 3 года назад

    Excellent. My daughter is now demanding a lock on the bathroom door and I was about to bodge an ugly bolt on until I saw this. I reckon this will make less mess of the door along with the peace-of-mind of being able to unlock from the outside just in case. I'm only wondering about using an oscillating multi tool instead of a chisel...

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  3 года назад

      Yes this is a far superior option. The multi tool might work for the face plate rebate but it's tricky to hold it still enough to stop it wandering.

    where can I buy this product

  • @scottmclean4237
    @scottmclean4237 6 лет назад +1

    Hy Charlie hope your well, my question is door related,
    Any tips or suggestions on what i can use as 2/3 mm shims. I'm hanging a door at weekend and don't want to go and buy a large pack of shims even tho they are handy, if I can use something else, something that is wedged to put under as hanging but also im thinking of a 2nd which has a straight shape too to keeo the gap between door and frame equal so it doesnt bind.
    Iv got a door lifter which is useful but wedges are good as I do t need to keep foot on them. Any tips gratefully received

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  6 лет назад

      Hi Scott, sorry for the delay in replying - the day job has been brutal this week! Yes good thanks - trust you are too? You're one up on me there with your door lifter as I don't have anything that organised! It's probably too late now as you've probably hung the door, but I have a video uploading (incredibly slowly) right now where you'll see a home made door lifter I made from a piece of 4x2" timber. In the past I've improvised with anything I can find the requisite thickness from card to magazines but why don't you cut a wedge from a piece of wood like I did in the video, then you can simply slide the wedge under the door to the required thickness? Good to hear from you, and let me know how you got on.

    • @scottmclean4237
      @scottmclean4237 6 лет назад

      Hy no prob I can imagine ur a busy guy.
      I have all sorts of wood shims an wedges but they are buried in my shed as im waiting to move house, in the end i used my door lifter and slid a wooden ruler underneath.
      Job was a pain. The frame wasn't plumb and the floor ran off. Then my electric planer gave up and i had to resort to a small block plane, generally a nightmare

    What drill bit size did you use for the pilot holes for the brass screws? Thanks

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  6 лет назад

      I think it was a 2mm diameter drill bit. It depends on the diameter of your screws and the sort of wood you're screwing into. Soft wood, and the pilot hole can be very narrow (1.5 - 2mm) - you're only really doing it to get the screw started. Hard woods like oak, and you need the drill bit to be the same diameter as, or slightly smaller than, the core of the screw (ie the bit in the middle of the screw not including the thread) - so that the screw (which is typically quite soft in these kits) doesn't get stuck as if this happens its easy to mess up the head of the screw.

    • @scottishjimmy9813
      @scottishjimmy9813 6 лет назад

      Charlie DIYte thanks Charlie, I actually recently fitted the door bolt you show at the start of the video... the smallest wood drill bit I had was 4mm, too big for the small brass screws. Anyway just hammered a nail part way in to get a small hole for the screw. Then removed the nail and started to screw in the brass screws. Ended up breaking the heads off two of the screws as the door was fairly tough wood... will need to buy a smaller wood drill bit for future use!

    Hi Charlie. I bought the kit and installed it at home without any problems. My concern is about the mechanism. The lock can be overturned (twisted?) And I am not sure how long it can last. Can this be somehow fixed? It looks like there is too much space between the thumbturn and the bolt. Thanks for your videos!

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  3 года назад +1

      I know what you mean. For some reason they're typically designed like this - mine too. I haven't had a problem with any of mine wearing out, but now you've done the hard work on the installation, you could always compare a few other brands. Like this perhaps bit.ly/3lb0SRA

    Charlie where did you get the 2mm bit from as I haven’t been able to find a wood one.. I do have a HSS bit set with a 2mm drill bit and even smaller ones. Can I use these in wood? Thanks

  • @patrickdwingram
    @patrickdwingram 6 месяцев назад

    Good video. One point: the kits need to inserted so the ‘turn to close’ direction is logical. All too easy to find you are turning the nut away from the jam to shut the lock. Which is irritating. Get this wrong and you may drill through for bolt slightly off line.

  • @mattikaki
    @mattikaki 3 года назад

    Nice video. But the scews are too big and they don’t sink nicely. You have tried to sink them with a normal drill bit but the cutting ange is wrong and it makes the countersink diameter too large if the screw sinks enough. Buy a real COUNTERSINK BIT and the sinking looks much better and the screw sits neatly. If the lock frame is steel, you must use rust protection especially in a bathroom lock.
