For anyone who has issues with water dripping down your arms by the sink, you should buy those Terry cloth wristbands (same kind you see athletes wearing). They're cheap and catch water from dripping down your arms. Made a huge difference in terms of mess.

I’ve always preferred washing my face in the shower, it feels less messy and my face feels cleaner afterwards! A lot of my friends said they heard that it can make you dry since it might take longer to do the rest of your skincare steps than if you do it at the sink, but I just make sure to do it asap after getting out of the shower and use a hydrating toner or something and I haven’t had any issues so far :)

Aside from getting everything wet, washing in the sink has another side-effect of left over residual cleanser from poor rinsing that can cause skin irritating. I didn't realize how bad it is until I switched to a dark color mud/charcoal based cleanser. If I rinse in the sink by feel then look up, I would notice residual dark foam along my hair lines and sides of my nose and such. I think the issue is always there but harder to see with transparent gel or white color cleansers.

I don’t shower every day, so I wash my face at the sink a lot. But I definitely prefer to do it in the shower. I feel like I get a more thorough clean because I can get a more thorough rinse. I’m not going really get into my hairline or my ears or my whole neck and chest with my cleanser at the sink when I know I’m never going to be able to rinse all of that effectively. I’ve heard a lot of people say you shouldn’t wash your face in the shower, so I’m glad to hear that it’s actually okay. My showers are generally lukewarm anyway, so I was pretty sure it was fine.

One of the real game changers for me has been listening to Dr Dray's advice on bathing with luke warm water instead of the hot shower. My skin does not itch often and looks less dry after soaking in moisturiser while skin is still damp. I used to suffer from itchy scalp. My scalp would itch immediately after the wash. It's so hot in my country and sweaty itchy scalp is torture when you can't scratch in public. My derm told me I have dry scalp but whatever she gave didn't work until Dr Dray mentioned selsun shampoos. I went out and bought the selsun blue pro and after just one wash the itch stopped! Oh and another biggie is that I stopped exfoliating my skin in any way whatsoever and now I don't have bits of dry skin when I wash my face in the shower, tretinoin user here. So many other things our lovely doctor advises have changed my skin and the way I view life too.

Putting a folded towel on the counter between your body and the sink helps a lot to catch splash back and prevent water from ending up all over you. Then when you're finished you can use that same towel to pat your face dry, then dry the counter behind the sink where done water may have splashed.

I wash at the sink. I do not scoop water on my face. That is way too messy. I apply cleanser after adding a little water, massage into face, and use a washcloth gently to remove, rinsing the washcloth a couple times between. Then I pat dry my face with a towel. Works perfectly.

Posted this before. Moved here about 10 months ago with hard city water. Have roscea but was under control. Irritation continued to get worse and worse. Started used a double cleanse, then added micellar water. Within 2 days my face stopped breaking out and started to heal. We are going with the shower faucet softener and reverse osmosis for drinking water. Currently waiting for arrival and insulation.

I use both. In the morning I just use water on my face to get rid of some excess oil (no cleanser). At night time I use the shower (with cleanser).
Some tips for using a sink, is to use a cosmetic head band (one name for them), to get the hair out of the face (nightmare).
Another tip that was massive for me, is to put on some wrist sweat bands. I just cannot have water/soapy-water drip off my elbows, it pisses me off.
I prefer when I can use a shower, though. Don't have to do the above (although I do wear the headband for the oil half of my double cleanse outside of the shower, then I step into the shower).
Also if one only cleanses their face over a sink, cleansing the ears would be such a pain to rise, and the water would drip down the side of the neck. I do use water for my ears in the morning, but I'm not using soap, so I don't need to get a bunch of water there for rinsing.

I agree with your comment about Houston hard water. We live in Atascocita and the water is so bad that the ends of my daughters hair look dry and damaged just a week or so after getting a trim. I’m thinking of putting a filter on her shower head to see if that will help. I’ve bought her so many products to help and they don’t seem to improve the texture. I’m pretty sure that she doesn’t have a protein deficiency, so that’s my last resort to not having to pay for monthly trips to a salon. I don’t remember this being an issue before Harvey, makes me wonder if they’re over treating our municipal water coming from Lake Houston.

I like washing my face in the shower, because every time I try washing my face in the sink it makes a mess all over the place and also I feel like I’m not doing as good of a rinse on my face when I wash my face in the sink.
I haven’t been wearing make up because I have been working from home ever since the pandemic started, so a lot of times I don’t even really use a cleanser to wash the moisturizer off my face from when I put things on at night.
I use warm water not hot, but lukewarm water whenever I shower and wash my hair and face. I heard that using cold water is best for your hair when you’re rinsing it but the cold water is just too darn cold in the morning so I usually just use warm water..

I totally concur with the scalp and the hard water. my eczema on my scalp is horrible especially in the colder months. It's a lose lose. :(

I wash my face in the shower when I shower. I don't usually shower just before bed, so any makeup removal & face washing takes place at the sink. I double cleanse & use a bamboo wash cloth made for babies which is very soft & non abrasive. If I've worn sunscreen on my neck, chest & arms, that all gets washed too. I just keep a couple extra towels handy to wipe off the counter & keep the floor dry. No big deal. Not going to take another shower just to wash my face. Obviously if you shower late in the evening before bed it is more convenient to wash your face in the shower. For people who shower in the morning--not so much.

I prefer washing my face in the shower because I am a night time shower person. And I don’t wash my face in the morning. I just lower the temperature when I rinse my face.
Yes, I’m aware I should be taking my entire shower at that lower temp but hot showers is a bad habit I will probably never be able to break. My shower time is the most relaxing part of my day and I will enjoy it and not feel bad about it.

Where I"m from, Toronto, Canada, it's cold right now. It's hard to only use lukewarm water in the shower as you get cold in the shower. I try and wash my face with lukewarm water and then turn it up slightly to wash my body. Sometimes I just don't feel like getting my body wet either. Because I usually have water-resistant sunscreen on, I will take a bamboo cloth to help get it off when I'm using the sink. I'm not sure if this aggravates the melasma on my forehead, so I make sure I"m gentle when doing so.

I use to always wash my face under Lukewarm Water in the shower AM and PM get out and wipe my face dry. I joined skincare groups and was chastised for that and started patting my face dry. I was told by my Dermatologist shower cleansing is ok and other people online say absolutely not. My skin has been dry and flaky sincr March and I was on an expensive skincare line and patted and applied to damp skin at the sink. Well I saw my Dermatologist July 11th. He put me on Spironolactone. Well here I am and I cleanse AM and PM with LaRoche Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser, I get out of the shower and pat my face dry when I get to the sink and I have an Essence with Willow Bark and Niacinamide that I only use below my lip and on my nose. After that I have been applying CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion instead of the Cream in the AM because I am trying to avoid pilling. At night my routine is the same and after I apply the Lotion I apply the CeraVe Moisturizing Cream. My skin is still still dry, still has flaky spots. If I look in the mirror I can see the dryness and the little dry flake specks. I'm mentally exhausted and this is starting to effect me emotionally and has lowered my self esteem. I don't know what to do anymore? I want my skin back, I want to put on a motorcycle helmet and not worry about my skin rubbing off possibly let alone my moisturizer pilling. I always have to wipe my hairline and sometimes my jawline to try and avoid that but unsure with the Lotion. 😔
