  • #59 from the Hymnal 1982. Opening Hymn on the Third Sunday of Advent at St. Bartholomew's, an Episcopal church in New York City on December 11, 2011.
Words: Latin ca. 6th century "Vox clara ecce intonat"
Tune: 'Merton', William Henry Monk, 19th century; descant Alan Gray, 20th century
On the last line of the descant, you can hear a strange harmony that is belted out of nowhere. There were people moving around behind me, but I don't recall hearing anyone singing like that. Sorry if it ruins the recording - it kind of does for me. I suggest you look up St. John's Episcopal church in Detroit for their beautiful version.

One of the great, solid foretelling hymns of Advent! Thanks for capturing this!

I'm singing this song today for Mass. Your video helped me learn this hymn. Thank you.

Lovely hymn....many thanks. Pity about the late comers. If Queen Elizabeth was going to be present I am sure everyone would have been early, however, the King of Kings was there.......enough to be said.

Beautiful wood flooring on which the Altar is sitting. Pity the priest does not face East for the Eucharist as the traditional Anglican church has always done (and continues to do) for hundreds of years!

Why is this playlist called "Catholic Songs for Advent" when several of the videos are from Episcopal churches?

Uh...I'm an Episcopalian and I do not regard myself as a Catholic.

      Yes indeed.

Wikipedia seems to contradict that notion.

I was taught that in the creed we were saying "catholic" with a lower-case C, meaning "universal" and not the denomination of Catholicism. (I must admit: I first learned that in Catholic school, which I attended for my junior high years!)

And I agree with everything you just said, Terry Cox. I don't mean to be unkind. Just curious and actually enjoying the discussion. Thank you!

These hymns of the episcopal church of USA and anglican Church of England are so awesome in every sense, from spirituality to worship to each and every aspect of our life with God , BUT FOOLS, SEEM TO LIKE RUBBISH CHORUSES WHICH ARE honestly preposterous to say the least, MY beloved Mother who looked after me, who is actually a Saint, as anyone looking after someone WITHOUT GIVING THE CURSE OF LIFE, THE YOKE OF LIFE, THE BURDEN-SOME-NUISANCE -MILESTONE CALLED LIFE , is actually a SAINT....so MY Mother had a great time of Anglican Church of England hymns growing up, FREE OF CURSED CHORUSES. THANK YOU FOR THE HYMNS.. CHORUSES ARE A CURSE

Lovely church, lovely music. But abandoning the High Altar in favor of the "dinky table out front" inspired by Vatican 2 is NOT something you want to do. I sure hope you left your High Altar in place, and did not trash it.

The high altar is indeed intact and is customarily used! Check out other videos from "St. Bart's" in the City of New York, here on RUclips.
