Escharum is one of the few antagonist which I understand. He is quite honorable for a brute, he wanted one thing and one thing only, a worthy dead so that his legend may have a meaning. He admires chief for his prowess and respects him as an enemy, all that mockery was to him to make a mistake so that he might fight him. He wants to die fighting because he is dying. In most covenant cultures, that includes sangheli or elite as we most commonly know it, dying without fighting is a disgrace and even if you are the best you will be remembered as a weakling. He wanted a honorable dead so that everything he stood for persists while the vanished exist, a true end to an amazing warrior like him.
He had many chances to crush Chief with the might of the Banished but he ultimately wanted Chief to give him what his sickness wouldn’t, a warriors death.
I love the clever double meaning in the line “told by those that survive you”. Could mean that Escharum expects to lose, and is literally talking about the others who will fight Chief and survive, but it could also mean survive in the sense of outlive, meaning the story would be told by Chief’s remaining allies

I love the direction they've taken with chief. I know he was originally supposed to be a blank slate, something for people to project themselves into, but this is not a bad way to do things. From the start escharum was dieing, he wanted to die a warriors death instead. When he saw master chief survived Atriox he knew he would get to battle master chief than die to age or a plague. First line he said to master chief was " a Spartan. No, something better. THE MASTER CHIEF RETURNS!"
“tell them i died well” really tells us how he would rather die fighting, and have a glorious death than to just die from his sickness, really loved escharum throughout the whole camp, a really honorable character with a badass death
Honestly, Chief had no reason to not respect Escharum. Yeah, him and the Banished still wanted to wipe out humanity, but it wasn't because of blind religious fanaticism like the Covenant, or outright feelings of superiority like the Didact, but because the Banished were fed up with being oppressed, and would seek to eliminate any potential source of it before it could shackle them again. He really was the only antagonist in the series, other than Atriox, that seemed like an opponent in a war dictated only by rationality rather than fervor, which is probably why Chief was able to sympathise with him better than other enemies. In the end, he really was just a soldier.
The Prophets from the Covenant era were so thoroughly awful that they didn't deserve any respect so its a nice change to see an enemy that was honorable enough that Chief let him die in his arms
Much Like Master Chief He to was a tool for war. the Covenant just used him and his people as cattle expendable assets for war lying to them that their deaths were for a higher purpose a higher calling.
Cheif is a true warrior, he honored the wishes of a fellow warrior and even though he agrees that he was a monster. He knows that in the end Escharum was just a fellow soldier who was following what he thought was right.
Honor and glory! Seems rare nowadays. A honorable death in the field! Escharum might have been the antagonist but when u hear the whole story. I think people can relate to him
Escharum one of the bosses did not really want too kill. He was an interesting layered badass. They really made the Brutes ruthless badasses in this game.
Tartarus didn't know honor, he only sought the approval of the Prophets over everything else. Escharum has no religious zeal, he and the other Jiralhanae only follow Atriox because he is the one taking control and giving them direction in the aftermath of the Covenant's destruction.
After fighting him on legendary I must say he did indeed die well and despite dying from an illness he was true to his word to an honorable fight and with that I’m glad we both had a moment to savor the legendary battle!
No apology no matter how sincere could ever make up for the destruction of their planet words of remorse are wasted in the eyes of warriors at least that's probably what Escharum would say
Man was either gonna die by his health, or go with a fight. Man fought with all his remaining strength and showed bravery and respect for the chief. Chief gave respect in return. I always liked that Cheif respected Esherem in a way. He never had to verbalize it, but just the fact he went through all of his trials and fought him on HIS terms, it was cool to see that side of chief. It reminds me a bit of the relationship between Kirby and DeDeDe.
The mantle accepts all who live fiercely; who defend their young, build, and struggle, and grow; and even those who dominate as jiralhanea have dominated, cruelly, and without wisdom. Know this relentless enemy, killer of our people, War Chief of the Banished; you and what you fought for will not fade into obscurity, but will be remembered and cataloged for others to learn from.
The glassing of humanity, the enslavement of the grunts, the prophets betrayal of the elites, and now the destruction of the brutes home. I’m starting to realize everyone in halo is just fighting to survive.
You honestly can't hate Escharum for wanting to fight us/hating us after we find out what Cortana did. At least Master Chief who holds himself to blame for her, can't.
This is the Chief that I wanted to see in Halo 5, a more humane Chief, something that was completely ignored in Guardians that was built in Halo 4, and that's one of the things I really enjoyed Halo 4. But it was completely ignored in its disastrous sequel, and brought back in Halo Infinite, which to me is the best Halo since Reach and the best from 343i.

I like that they made Chief shows his enemies respect, anybody can't hate their enemy but Chief is above that. Like Jun said in Reach: "I kill the enemy, but do not hate them."
Despite Escharum was a strong adversary he has not chance to win, he was sick, there are some scenes where you can see him coughing like if he was suffering a disease. He definitely chose to die fighting against Chief than die from a possible disease.
I'm pretty sure people misinterpret the "Survive you" line. That phrase generally means even if you die, your friends or children or whatnot will remember you.
RIP Escharum, he is a legend. He showed so much respect toward Master Chief throughout the entire game. I was hoping that he would die in Master Chiefs arms and they did just that... the first Halo villian that I actually was sad to see go. In a way him and Master Chief were almost the same, soldiers fighting for their people; in a way Escharum was justified in what he was doing. Cortana destroyed their entire planet, they had nowhere to go. Not once did Escharum say he wanted to go to earth or destroy earth he only wanted a great final fight with the Chief and an honorable death. Escharum was a true warrior to the end.
A warrior challenged someone who the entire covenant refers to as "The Demon" to fair 1v1 combat. He definitely earned a warriors respect. The amount of powerful chieftains and important covenant figures he's slain speaks for Chiefs reputation
when he says "in the end he's just a soldier hoping that he'd done the right thing" i'm reminded that the spartan 2's weren't made to fight the covenant. They were made to fight human separatives and Insurrectionist
After seeing his homeworld destroyed, I can only imagine what Chief would have felt if the Earth met that fate. I can understand why he showed respect to the enemy commander making his last stand for what he thought was right.
Soldiers fight for what they belief is right, that’s why master chief shows him respect. Also, the guy’s planet was destroyed by Cortana, so he wanted revenge, which is understandable.
Keep in mind Escharum was fighting to avenge his homeworld, which Cortana destroyed and he blamed humanity for... for making Cortana. Plus [Escharum] fought and died with honor.
I read a comic a long time ago. It was a retelling of the story of Judas Iscariot after he betrays Jesus and ends up in hell. While he’s being escorted through that desolate place by Satan, he comes across the monster Goliath from the Book of Samuel. Satan offers a lament for the giant. “Goliath. The monster from your childhood stories. But in the end, just another soldier, fighting on the wrong side. And sent here because he called God another name.”
This is the honor of battle. Two enemies who both think they are doing right and understand why the other believes so, but also understands why they must be at odds with each other. It's respect among warriors, when you both know that only one will win, and you both prepare for death, you know you both can die and respect the other for having the courage to fight against each other.
In the end he only wanted a honorable death. When he found out Master Chief was alive he saw that as a chance to die with honor and glory.

Words to live by...
this is why he was the only Noble to survive
Exactly. It’s very admirable.
Yeah he could have made things extremely unfair in the arenas
Heavy pirce plays in the background 😢
I love the clever double meaning in the line “told by those that survive you”. Could mean that Escharum expects to lose, and is literally talking about the others who will fight Chief and survive, but it could also mean survive in the sense of outlive, meaning the story would be told by Chief’s remaining allies

@@dat_boiii627 sad part is that he might not have a home to get back to. The Covenant is still out there, plus Cortana may have destroyed wherever his family may be, and the Banished is really hunting every human left on the galaxy. There is little chance that they may still be alive...
There is also the flood.

If you pay attention to all the cinematics featuring Escharum you'll notice he is obviously sick and dying. That's not a warrior's death. With Chief it would have been either his greatest victory, one worthy of going on on or a warrior's death worthy of inspiring thousands.
I love the direction they've taken with chief. I know he was originally supposed to be a blank slate, something for people to project themselves into, but this is not a bad way to do things. Exploring not only the Spartans' undoubtedly tortured psyches, but hell even his enemies'. Granted that started with Arbiter in Halo 2, but it was far more simplistic, I think.
Yeah. I love the mix they've done between the emotional 4-5 Chief and the stoic and badass 1-3 Chief.
@@mustardbeef6045 if you read Halo: the flood, which basically is the book version of Halo Ce, most of this game matches that which is nice (In terms of MCs dialogue). More talkative than the trilogy but in a good way, always thought they went a bit overboard in 4&5.

It's just... "oh shit, we've been lied to, those assholes, well now we switch sides".
Losing their home to cortana no wonder the banished are obsessed with crushing humanitys hope
not just that but before that the covenant used them and forced them to do suicide missions.
I’d hold a grudge with humanity too lmao
Its multiple. Revenge for fallen brothers, humanity made cortana, and potentially humans taking the mantle. Which they might see as just another covenant.

@@roninnib6635 Escharum didn't torture the pilot, Jega did. After Jega died, Escharum simply awaited Chief's arrival.

@@jannclaudebinoya And to think he was still alive during all of that humping!
Bud I literally teabagged escharum before the cutscene
Great writing, amazing villain.
Also remember that Cortana destroyed Doisac and chief felt guilty because it kinda was his fault that the banished retaliated so hard on humanity.

I think people can relate to him
And his homeworld got destroyed by Cortana sop he has nothing to lose
Escharum one of the bosses did not really want too kill. He was an interesting layered badass. They really made the Brutes ruthless badasses in this game.
Did anyone else almost shed a tear during this?
Escharum had more honor than any other brute I know of, I kinda respect him more than tartarus
Look at the way chief puts his habds on escharum as he falls. What a nice guy.
Highkey I was expecting Chief to apologize to Escharum for letting Cortana fall so far and in turn causing Doisac's destruction.

They will both die as legends. And their stories told through others who lived. It’s almost a parallel to how we will go on to show these games to our children, and their children. Halo is about LEGACY. The forerunners legacy. Humanity’s legacy, the covenants legacy, and now… The banished’s legacy. These games will live so we can share its story to others so they can do the same as well. FRICK I LOVE HALO!!

Guess that's why Chief is worthy of that armour, the rest of us would just be a bunch of cruel war criminals if we had the same power chief does.
This was the first time we get to see Chief show respect to an enemy.
A warrior challenged someone who the entire covenant refers to as "The Demon" to fair 1v1 combat. He definitely earned a warriors respect. The amount of powerful chieftains and important covenant figures he's slain speaks for Chiefs reputation
Master Chiefs prompt reactions to questions he doesn't care to answer is comedy gold.
