This video is perfect for me. Love your pacing and how thoroughly you take us through this. Thank you so much!!
You are the only one on RUclips to actually explain how to set the WB on trans III cameras. I figured out most of it but you finally switched the light on for me. Thank you very much.
Absolutely phenomenal presentation! Thank you so much 😊
This was a truly outstanding episode, my friend.
Thank you, very glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic. Step by step instructions. Thank you very much.
Under the Main White Balance settings, you can save three Custom WB settings. Of course, this would only work for three "recipes."
This was an outstanding presentation! Thank you so much 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
The WB tint issue is exactly why I bought the xe4... plus the tone curve, clarity and cl.Neg. simulation.
I guess fuji needed time to evolve this for themselves, but on the new models it seems finally fully refined!
It's about time, really...
@@zenography7923 what about the X100V?
I came across this video, today! Many thanks for not only the information but your patient explanation!
Thanks, glad you liked it!
You could simply add the wb settings to the custom name, thus you can leave any notes at home. Looks like 'PORTRA400 DAY R+2 B-5'
Thank you for your great videos!
Cheers
Now there's a good idea, thanks!
editing custom names is not an option on my X-T10, but I do have the app mentioned in the video.
@@727jetjumper Same with my XT20, you would think Fuji could fix it with a firmware upgrade?
@ burkhard: Der beste Tipp ever! So simpel und einleuchtend! Danke.
On my xt30 I can have 3 custom WB slots so I can have up to 3 film simulations only. Is there a better way to do this?
Thank you very much Mr. Nigel !!!
This was super helpful!
An inspired simulation would be Kodak VPS, which was the standard medium format negative used for weddings. It yielded an extremely rich warm flesh tone that as a custom color printer at a commercial lab, I was well familiar with for over a decade. Of all things, the only thing that came close to it was when our California skies were full of smoky reddish air from the big fires. Looks like Eterna leans toward vps, but not quite the molten qualiry.
I'd like to find a sim for that one!
@sclogse1
Make the suggestion to Ritchie at FujiXWeekly.
Note: It's a lot easier making and saving your settings through the Q menu. Also, the on screen keyboard uses touch.
Thanks for the tip!
Set me a great video that will come in handy I love these recipes I've been looking into them and having fun creating My Own. I shall watch the rest of the video later when I wake up because right now I'm sleep typing😂😂
It's worth giving these recipes a go if you get the chance - they're very nice indeed! Glad you enjoyed the video.
This is brilliant. Thanks so much.
No worries, glad you enjoyed it!
Great stuff! Thank you.
Many thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
This is one of the reasons I got my X-T10... I love it. I love it more than I thought (I went 'inexpensive ' to give it a try. )
I'm already considering an upgrade to an X-T2 or X-T4... My D7100 is hating me right about now ...
I'm sure you will get over it, and remain the best of friends!
On the White Balance menu you got 3 custom slots you can edit and save and then you can assign those to your most used recepies.
I'll give that a go, thanks!
You may want to change that to assign instead of assing....a "recipe" for disaster.
@@sclogse1 Oh crap! Didn't notice that. Thanks!
Even though split-toning is not available, I wish more 'recipes' were developed/shared for other brands!
You can get a fantastic over-exposed Pro 400H look-alike by tweaking Nikon's "vivid" picture control and combining it with AWB 0 (keep white).
I didn't know that, thanks for the tip!
Hello, one doubt that I have. For recipes we use only white balance shift and we don't use Kelvin value at all. Do I understand correctly that the shift does the same thing as setting Kelvin temperature? If you select the white balance type to Kelvin on X-T2 you select temperature, but further you can select the balance? How do they interact with each other. Also when auto white balance is selected will it not change the temperature regardless of the shift that we've set?
Thank You SO much.
No worries, glad you enjoyed it!
I hear MuseCam - Photo Editor for iPhone has film recipes options that you can insert with text and when you press the shutter button on your iPhone, you will have all the best Fujifilm and Kodak film Simulations coming out of your iPhone, works the same way that the Fujifilm X Series Cameras do.
That sounds interesting, thanks - I'll check it out!
The custom white balances can absolutely be saved in the custom setting slots, but only on newer cameras.
Yes, some newer ones can do it I believe, and about time too!
Game changer on my xt1!!
Those sims really are quite something!
@@zenography7923 100%
Great video. I wonder how close we could come on the Pen F replicating some of these color and black and white films.
I'm sure other cameras must be able to do something like this, to a greater or lesser extent - it would be worth experimenting!
My mind is full of Zenography...
I'm pleased to hear it!
The most importante thing, its what cant be changed, The WB Shift!
Dear Nigel, Thank you for this great Video, I really enjoyed it. Just one question: With my X-Pro2 it doesn`t seem to be possible making bracketing with a selection from the self-cooked simulations. Is that right or am I doing something wrong? It seems at least the simulations-bracketing chooses only from the standard-simulations which is a bit sad in my opinion. Cheers from Berlin
As far as I'm aware, it works on the bundled sims only - unfortunately!
A ‘hack’ I use for the white balance is to set the three custom white balance profiles and then tether those to 3 of the simulations. For the rest you just need to remember, but for your three most used simulations you won’t need to worry about it :)
A useful tip, thanks!
The 3 custom web can only be set by pointing the camera at something white? Not Manually choose wb setting?
@@solidamber if you press ‘ok’ again during that dialogue it’ll take you to the colour matrix :)
@@TheMaxibonzGaming thanks.
@@solidamber No worries mate :)
Could you enter similar settings like this into other cameras like Nikon etc?
Thanks for that, I was wondering how to save the WB tint with the recipe settings and was thinking it just me being stupid !! Has this issue been resolved in the latest Fuji cameras?
I think in the very latest ones it has - and not before time either!
I take it the image as seen in the viewfinder is with the simulation effect applied?
Yes, it is indeed!
i like your detailed explanation and teaching , what your favorite BW and color recipe
I love the Acros sim, with contrast raised a little, and red (electronic) filter!
Hi it based on the old neopan I used to use at college
As mentioned in the chat bellow you have to assign one of the 3 WB custom settings to be able to save WB. Think that you can run only 3 recipes at the time if you have to change custom WB.
Thanks for the tip!
@@zenography7923 By the way you can also reset saved recipe to default custom setting in the menu. Then all settings are gone and camera will go to SDT (Provia).
This a fascinating insight into the interesting and strange world in which we live. This all sounds to a luddite like me, a bit like buying a Tesla - and then inventing a series of sub programmes so that it replicates the feel and performance of a classic car.
Yes, Im aware of the irony of sitting in front of a PC screen to type this ... is there a setting to make this look look like ink on parchment....? ;)
Not sure about Luddite - it's more to do with an aesthetic look and feel - a few more colours on the palette, so to speak.
It has to be said you do a great jod of walking us through this process, BUT, what a major pain in the arse Fuji has made by not anticipating the ability to save WB easily and simply.
I love you relaxed never mind attitude. This video is as good as it gets, Well done !
Many thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
I don’t know why but I feel like I’m watching Bob Ross painting a snowy scenery.
Thanks!
quick question, i was asked earlier can a fuji x lens be mounted to an eos M camera
I'm not sure - it would depend on whether the flange distances (the distance between the sensor and the camera mount) are the same.
I was keep trying to figure out how to mess with WB and sometimes I was doing it by mistake and wasnt really understanding how I did it, now I see, I cannot edit it in recipe but in the main menu BUT its bloody annoying!
It's certainly a little irksome - but the results are worth it!
With Tri-X Push Process you forgot to set higher ISO above 3200 to get more film look grain with that simulation. Many of them requires using higher iso to acomodate proper structure of grain different than build in grain effect in body :)
Any recipe using *specifically Acros* requires high ISO (if you don't have the additional Grain settings on). Acros is unique in that Fujifilm engineers add grain based on the ISO regardless of the separate Grain setting. The Acros grain has a different, more film-like, grain distribution compared to the normal camera Grain setting. Push the ISO up using Acros and you get more film-like grain rather than ISO noise.
I have my X-E4 AutoISO3 set to 1600 to 12800 when using Acros. Around 2000 to 2500 you start seeing the grain better. Acros is meant to be fine grain, which is why you aren't meant to see much grain at lower ISO values. When using Acros based recipes I do not use the separate Grain setting as it defeats the object of using Acros and it's "natural" grain!
When using Acros, *do not turn on the Grain setting* just increase the ISO!
Whoops, thanks for the tip!
In the custom menu it says save settings on the top, when you select it it takes you out of the menu and you loose all the settings! I thought the camera was faulty, why is that entry even there!
I really can't imagine - it's almost like someone didn't quite finish it off!
Hi Nigel. Lovely informative video.
The white balance issue was something that bothered me from back along. I think the whole thing needs a rethink and to be much better implemented.
I see a future of pay to download coming and cameras with bigger internal memories
That's entirely possible - though I hope it doesn't happen! Cameras are better kept self contained I think. The white balance issue really surprised me at first, although workarounds are simple enough, and I think there are a couple of Fuji cameras that can save wb settings - I think the X-Pro 2 is one?
Memory is not the issue (using SD card and retrieve the setting from it), but I agree on some dumb down FW which Fuji marketing made.Otherwise how else would they sale the simulations while you can make them on older camera. All in all someone who is handy with cracking Fuji FW ( like Canon lantern) should enable slots which could be loaded fron a sd card.
@Camera Rover
It is already fixed on the later X-Trans IV cameras.
@@fredbloggs545 Sadly it isn’t. The x-pro 3 still suffers with the WB adjust. In fact if you come out of any user recipe then you have to reset WB. Unfortunately it is a quirk of the system due to WB being solely independent. The only workaround is to assign each simulation to a different custom WB. All very tedious.
@@camerarover7124
Ah I read an X-Pro3 user on dpreview confirming that you could do it on the X-Pro3.
I couldn't on my X-E3 but can on my X-E4.
One of the many reasons I upgraded from the X-E3 to X-E4 was so that I could save the individual WB settings to the 7 Custom Settings slots.
You also don't need to keep C1 as "standard" like you do as there is an now "A" which is the default settings and then the C1 to C7 slots. Fujifilm got rid of all the "BASE" confusing mess too. They did a lot of work sort all this custom settings stuff out.
Of course the X-E4 comes will all the latest goodies, like more extra grain settings, Clarity, Color Chrome Effect, Color chrome Blue, Monochromatic Color and of course the latest Film Simulations! You can also do Highlight and Shadow adjustments in 0.5 increments now.
Fujifilm X RAW Studio can be used to store many Custom Settings and with the X-E4 it will copy the settings to the Custom Settings slot of your choice. No fiddling with the camera.
It sounds like custom settings have been properly sorted out - at last!
i'm trying to add classic chrome and acros to an x100s (x rans ii sensor). could you do another series for fujis with the x trans ii sensor. don't have the cash to upgrade just now. thanks for your great channel!
I'd like to, but I don't currently have an X-Trans ii camera I'm afraid!
@@zenography7923 that's OK, i'll sort it out. thanks for your prompt reply. keep up the good work!
@@rustyjames6971re acros.. try this use the bw simulation then bump up the highlight and shadow to max, noise reduction to min sharpness +2, DR 100, the trans 2 does not have a grain menu but bump up the iso as high as you dare at least 1600 to get some noise in the image this looks like grain in bw, ...see what you think.
@@solidamber thanks, i'll give it a go.
@@solidamber actually, b&w has 4 flavours in my x1s - standard, green filter, yellow filter, red filter. i used the red filter sim for higher contrast. looks pretty good.
Qst: if you then chose another of youre custom edits, do you have to type in manualy the wb numbers each time you change between the custom edits?
I'm afraid so, yes. It really is a pain!
@@zenography7923 Okei. I was just wondering because the shift custom seems to work very good. On my xt2 i have 3 custom white balance shift. I use them on my 3 recipes, Leica Like, kodacolor and portra400. It works very well. For the c1 i have auto wb and provia in a flat neutral profile. And for c5 i have Jeff Bridges reciepy for Acros also auto wb. And the same for classic chrome on c6. The classic chrome in standard is just so damn good in std.
Best regards from Norway
One question about this. If you choose one of the film simulations, but you previously changed the white balance for a custom setting, do you have to set the white balance accordingly even though you chose an inbuilt one? Thank you.
Unfortunately yes you do. Why is something I can't quite get my head around!
Thank you.
Which non-radioactive lens comes closest to the Industar 69 as a wide-angle lens ?
I bought a 7Artisant 25mm E-Mount today, it is probably a Chinese lens of the present, tomorrow it will be tested, I am curious how it will compare to vintage.
It's likely to perform in a broadly similar way to vintage lenses. If you check out this week's video I'm testing a TT Artisans 17mm f1.4 - a very nice little lens!
@@zenography7923 I ❤ you !
I bought the 25mm F1.8 7Artisans , now I bought an orange filter for B/W - cool stuff (I suppose) - also new in my collection Industar KMZ with polarize filter !
It’s as if Agfa is still manufacturing film... (*quietly sobbing*)

Fantastic video. ✌🏽
Unfortunately this trick won't work on X-T200.
Sorry to hear that - I though all the X cameras could do it!

Hi there, I'm doing fine thanks! Glad you're enjoying the videos!
Is it on Xt2? Thanks.
As I recall this was done on an X-T2
Is there any reason to make saving WB that complicated?
I am at a loss to understand why WB settings can't be saved on these cameras - quite an oversight! I believe it was fixed on the later cameras though, eg X-T3, X-T4.
FROM THAILAND >>xt4 u can set whiteB rightaway manythanks your presentations are very hellpful AND VERY CLEAR THAN OTHERS MANYTHANKS

For those times you don't have or can't carry around a DSLR (heresy, I know) ;)
you can get a similar experience with " 1998 Cam " on your phone... so many different simulations built in.
