Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but: if you wear headphones you can hear the sound of your watch tick throughout this video. That's a superb mic you have there!
Thanks for the video. If I'm not mistaken, my XE1 and my XPro1(X Trans 1 Sensor) also 16.3 megapixels, just like the XE2. (X Trans 2 Sensor) My XE2S is 16.7 megapixels.
I agree with you regarding the optical viewfinder on the x pro series. Sold my x pro3 because I realized I was shooting if any with die evf. And even worse, I more often grabbed my X-E2s because it's so much fun too use. So simple and yet so powerful in the shooting situations. Wonderful camera. Wonderful images.
I just got my X-E2 today,,it's a joy to use i must say. Even in 2021,the camera doesn't feel dated the user interface is highly responsive and of course the amazing image quality. It's indeed the sweet spot when compared with it's predecessor and successors. I got a manual lens for it a 35mm f1.2 and a 16-50mm kit lens. 50mm f1.2 in due time. Thanks for your amazing videos 🙏🏻
Even after owning and loving modern Fujifilm cameras (X-T2, X-T3 and X-Pro2), I bought a new-in-the-box X-E2s that was sitting on a shelf unsold. The small "s" designation signifies that it is the X-E2 but with all the firmware updates and a few external tweaks. I love this camera! I even bought the $60 Lensmate thumb grip which improves the physical handling. This sensor makes older lenses that may suffer from too much resolution like on the X-T3 look good. I really like the much maligned 18mm f/2 at 16mp on the X-E2s.
Good insights. I have the X-E1 and the X-T1. Love them both and totally agree with your comments on the differences between the sensors. I prefer the large buttons on the X-E1 to the flat almost flush X-T1 buttons. Plus while the T1 has front and rear dials, they are not pushable so I miss that natural, fast way to check focus. I think an XE2 might indeed be the perfect x series camera as you’ve suggested. It doesn’t have the touch screen swipes that are on the E3 and E4, and that’s a good thing IMO.
WHAT UTTER MISINFORMATION!! INCREDIBLE, THIS IDIOT HAS NO IDEA WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT!! THE XE 1 IS A 16 MEGAPIXEL CAMERA. THE X PRO ONE IS ALSO 16 MEGAPIXELS. ITS JUST THE XT1 USES MK2 SENSOR BUT ITS CALLED A MK1 SENSOR..BECAUSE THE ORIGINAL 16 MEGAPIXEL HAD NO NUMBER.. IT WAS JUST CALLED X-TRANS.
Great review! I have experience using X-E1, X-E2 and X-E3. I am still using X-E2 and X-E3. I like the faster AF speed and larger pixel count of the X-E3, but X-E2 is the more enjoyable camera to use. What I love most about the X-E2 is the D-pad. it provides 4 additional function buttons, so you don't need to use the screen swipes. I really hate the screen swipe functions on digital cameras because it gets activated unintentionally all the time! Oh and the x-trans 1's pixel count is actually 16MP, just like the x-trans 2. The main difference between the two, I believe, is the addition of phase-detect sensors to x-trans 2.
I prefer the beautiful clarity of the X A1 Bayer sensor. Pity they didn't put it in a stronger body but I got around that with adding a grip that goes all around the little body, protects it and makes a good solid grippable camera out of it for a man's hands.
Very enjoyable video and it purged the little urge I had to change my XE2 to something modern from Fuji. Saved my money 🙂 I bought the first piece of XE2 released in the UAE and still with me. As you said the images are indeed dream like.
Very nice, how cool that you enjoy this gem of a camera too. Personally I find the improved screen resolution from the x-e1 more important than the film recipes, I guess that's a question of taste. No doubt that the focus peeking make's the x-e2 more usable than the x-e1 though. Nice work! 👍
The peaking is a massive difference. So much easier to focus manually. I use Lightroom for the sims instead of JPG as you can get them all. But did like them on the XE1.
Great video! The XE2 is a wonderful camera overlooked by many who are unable to look beyond sensor size and pixel count which is a shame as the sensor in these is superb. The build quality is outstanding and feels like old high end mechanical 35mm cameras, you don't find such nice tactile feel very often in today's world. And you get access to a wide range of superb lenses offering some of the best build and optical quality available. And although Fujinon lenses aren't cheap they are very competitive with mirrorless lenses from Canon, Nikon and Sony. Even today the XE2 is worth buying.
WHAT UTTER MISINFORMATION!! INCREDIBLE, THIS IDIOT HAS NO IDEA WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT!! THE XE 1 IS A 16 MEGAPIXEL CAMERA. THE X PRO ONE IS ALSO 16 MEGAPIXELS.
Love my flippy screen X-M1, which is a little brother to the X-E1. Shooting vintage glass w/ white focus peaking in the summer time color aura is not a problem at all.
The X-Trans I & II (X-E1, X--E2) are two Rangefinder styled DSLMs, which are from image quality still many years after coming to market still excellent. The X-E2, with the advantage of 1) more Film simulations 2) better AF System 3) not laggy EVF like the X-E1, but i like the output from both way much. 16 MP is still plenty, now and into the next upcoming years. /typo fixed
Thanks for the comparison of these two great cameras. I shoot with both cameras and your commentary is extremely accurate. The design, the sensor, the pictures are amazing.
They both have 16mpix sensor and XE-2 has gen 2 sensor ,with Phase detect add and different color algorithm applied.Image wise XE-1 has better output while XE-2 handles other things such as AF and manual focusing much better.XT-1 is by no mean cult camera.
@@enkaphalin1111 Yeah, only x-e1 cost 150 and x-pro 1 seems to go for 350-400.I would say the delta is in the build quality (though E1 is better build then the later versions which using polycarbonate front plate in stead of aluminum) and OVF if you know and want to use one.
X-T1 was last year, Fall/Winter 230-250 EUR, now people found out about the Sensor, and prices raised, sad but true. I got my graphite Edition T1 for 300 bucks last year. I always wanted the T1, but since i paid already 900 EUR for the X-E1 after release, i don't wanted to spent a fortune onto the T1 afterwards.
I traded in my beloved XE2s for a 24mp XE3. 6 months later and the XE3 has gone and Im back onto the XE2. These sensors seem to work best at 16mp, just as sharp and well resolved with less noise in images and not as prone to artifacts when editing. The XE3 is efficient & clinical but the XE2 has soul.
@@miller1520 Funnily enough I bought an XT-1 two weeks ago, I find the ergonomics much better than the XE series - loving it so far with TTAtrisan lenses!
@@andrewbaxter9395 I bought an X-T1 and it was my favorite camera all around- especially loved the hand feel and solid build quality but had to send it back to MPB due to a weird sensor issue…. Shooting x-m1 and x-e1…. Finding the x-e1 a little too slow for my taste so here I am checking out the x-e2!
@@spost26 its lovely. Works a treat with the Meike 35mm f1.7 and TTartisans 52mm f1.4 both in Fuji X mount as they don’t need adapters that can unbalance the XE series. Enjoy!
The beautiful thing about Fujifilm back in the day, and especially the X-E2, is that many of the features you mention weren’t there on release. I bought mine in mid-2014. It didn’t have Classic Chrome, didn’t have multiple focus peaking colours (not sure if it even had focus peaking at all at release), but those were all added in firmware updates. General performance, autofocus etc got better. When it sadly drowned in the Mediterranean in late 2017, it wasn’t the camera I’d bought. It was much better, it was the mature product you describe. After the accident, I immediately bought the then brand new X-E3 and while it’s technically a better camera, I never connected to it the way I did with my X-E2.
I have many modern Fujifilm cameras, but after seeing so many testimonials to the earlier sensors, I bought a brand new in the box X-E2s... same as X-E2, but a few minor external tweaks and all the firmware updates incorporated as is. I love the look from this sensor, very film like. It is my most used camera when I have nothing specific in mind but want a camera available during a outing. The small Fujicrons are a perfect match in terms of ergonomics. My recently acquired 27mm f/2.8 R-WR is perfect as my general use lens on this camera. I like this camera so much that I bought a $60 thumbgrip to enhance the handling.
Fantastic advice and comparison, thank you. Funny thing though, your sound recording is so good that it picks up the ticking of you watch, which becomes quite prominent when played at 1.75 speed ;)
The OVF on the X pro series is useful if you want to save battery power, I use it when using the Fuji autofocus lens, not to save power but I just like it.
Xtran gen 1 is also 16mpx. But the best modern mirrorless Fuji sensor is the one in x100. It is a 12mpx Bayer sensor. The only Fuji that I would shoot raw in. Other xtran sensors I only shoot jpeg.
Xt1 was the camera that made me and many others say, I don’t need full frame. And, I believe it made more people leave full frames than any other camera.
@@zenography7923 On the upside, that means you can get professional CCD cameras for a low price :) I started out with a Pentax K-10D and kept it even after getting a more modern body. The CCD sensor, especially in combination with vintage glass, just produces lovely colours and character.
Oh, dear, I believe I have GAS. I had seen an E2 on the local marketplace, at a price comparable to that available at multiple vendors online. Then the seller lopped $100 off the price and I was done. No lens, but I picked up a few adapters and have been playing with my vintage lenses, but am stuck inside with a foot of fresh snow on the ground and frigid temps. My FIRST Fuji camera! It already has the firmware update. I do have a kit lens on the way to give me a start with a native lens until I can figure out which direction to go. I already like the simplicity of the menu system compared to the Sony or Olympus that I already have.
I'm in need of a budget mirrorless camera to use with my vintage lenses. I used to shoot Film Nikon SLRs and used to be a Nikon DSLR guy before selling and buying a fujifilm x100v, which I adore. However I only have film SLR cameras to use my vintage lenses with. I think this video is all the convincing I needed.
Try an XE2 for £250 with the perfectly decent 16-50 kit lens or £200 alone. Massive difference in weight. You will take it when you wouldn't take the DSLRs. At no point did I want to use the wife's 6D when I had the XE2 in hand.
Dear I enjoy your sober analysis!! very instructive Help me with an advise: I am behind on one of the FUJI XE series.... but I am undecisive! Which one is betteer, the XE2 or the XE3? thnx

Well, in the past year (it is now August 2023) the EBay going price for a X-E2 is $500. Many want much more than that. I was thinking of buying one as an additional small camera to take along with one of my many vintage lenses attached. Lots of people love this camera.
I just bought a practically brand new one from ebay for $540. It's my first camera i did my research and it's the best one of the four. The thing looks brand new. The owner of the japanese store told me the owner snapped 10 photo's and figured it wasn't for him lol. I'm so lucky to have a practically brand new one. I'm debating on just buying another one and keeping this one to sell in like 10 years. Or maybe get a X-t2 so i can have focus stacking since i need the camera primarily for taking product photos.
@@zenography7923 👍The XT series have far better EVFs, but I like them on the left and the XE2 is barely noticeable with a Fujicron. And totally unnoticeable with a lightweight pancake like their 24 or 27, Lomo T43 and Insustar 69. I am hoping the future TTartisans 23mm f5.6 will also be a nice pancake addition. It's a camera I never debate taking with the 27mm, whereas the X Pro is that little bit heavier and an XT more so. Although the X Pro with those tiny lenses isn't much heavier than an XE2 with a Fujicron. IMHO the 1 is too slow, the 3 is just not enjoyable with it's differences and smaller EVF and shorter eye relief and the XE4 also lacks grippage. The XE1 and 2 are mini X Pro 1s i.e. better built. The E series is dead. Only reason to switch my X Pro 2 would be a lighter version with nice EVF. Maybe an X Pro Lite. The XE2 will never be sold. The 2 years without it was like grieving a lost relative 😁
I do like Xe2, I dislike the big and fragile screen, and the tons of buttons. But the sensor make great b&w photos. Also with the last update you get electronic shutter up to 32,000, as the xe2s. Regards.
I have an XE2s and like it so much I bought another one as an unused boxed backup. The sensor is outstanding with B&W, and with a bit of work it cooks up to really looking like film. In colour, I work with a fettled Classic Chrome recipe. Both B&W and colour seem to work best for me at ISO800 with the dynamic range set to 400%. Whack a Hoya 72 IR filter on the front with a custom white balance, and the world is your oyster. The XE2s is an amazing camera, and results with old glass is just exceptional.
@@zenography7923 Also, small detail but matters for some like me - made in Japan. Currently all but the X Pro line are made outside Japan, quality may be the same but the nostalgia factor for this Japanese brand is a big deal and will only become more important with time. Leica makes a big deal out of Made in Germany
Excellent review I like your narration style reminds me of whispering Bob Harris. ( That is meant in the complimentary sense). I am looking at purchasing the X-E2 with a few accessories., but cannot decide if I should wait and see if the X-H2 comes out in May or buy the X-E2.
I'm always honoured to be compared to whispering Bob, thanks! The XH2 is a rather larger camera than the XE2, although no doubt technically more capable. I guess it's a question of which suits you best!
Very nice cameras. I've been wanting to play with Fujifilm's film sims for a while and the X-e2 might be the one I add to my collection when I'm able to put some extra money towards another camera. I really like sensors that give a film like look. Even though I've been using it for a short time, it's one of the things I've really come to love about the Canon 5D2 that I recently got. It gives an absolutely beautiful film look to it's photos. I was a bit concerned about the LCD monitor not moving, but to my surprise, that hasn't bothered me at all, so I doubt that it will with the X-E2 either. Thanks for the review.
I think you may be disappointed as those old Canon full frames have a nice soft filmic vibe. You get that more with Xtrans 1 Fuji's but the Xtrans 2 XE2 is far better than them in so many ways. Just don't expect it to be that filmic. Definitely get one, if only for the weight difference and EVF placement.
@@blood_n_guts_murphy I'm not sure what Canon's you're familiar with but when using sharp lenses, my 5D2 is as a sharp as heck. Sometimes I feel like it's a bit too sharp. I shot with film for 20 years and don't really think of it as soft unless the photographer was aiming for that effect.
@@kevinroberts1888 sorry, I wrongly assumed the old 6D and APSC 600D/T3i would be similar. I recall the 5D 2 being a classic. Probably a big step up. I never used it but recall a friend spending a lot on it. I just did video on the 600D with the kit lens and tragic lantern. It had a nice smooth look. And the wife's 6D with the cheap 50mm f1.8 seemed to have a similar smoothness. Not really a lack of detail, just a less clinical sharpness. With the Fuji XT3 the 50mm f2 was too sharp and contrasty. Great at times as it was such an impressive look. But I used a vintage 50mm too for a smoother look. When I went back to the XE2 the image softened and I didn't feel the need to have a vintage lens too. It was a nice middle ground. Not razor sharp, but definitely good enough.
@@blood_n_guts_murphy Thanks. Just noticed my post came across kind of harsh, but I didn't mean for it to be. I just meant by the film look, something that looks more like Kodachrome or Fujifilm's old film, etc. each company had a unique look due to their own recipe for their film. I like to switch between lenses depending on whether I want a sharp or soft look too. I think it would be fun to try out Fujifilm's film recipes, but am still undecided on a camera within my budge. I don't have a lot of experience with Fujifilm cameras so trying to learn all I can.
Do you mainly use manual focus? In autofocus, do you use face or eye detection? Does it work on moving subjects? Otherwise it's not worth investing in a set of Fuji optics, if they are not good in either manual or auto mode. But it remains an excellent way to adapt vintage or recent manual optics
the Fuji X-E2 is the only camera I never knew I needed until I bought one. I've had my used body since 2017, and all I want is a second body to replace mine if I need it. I have the 18mm f/2.0 on it, again all I need.
It's 2 years after this video was posted, and I just purchased a used but immaculate x-e1, with shipping from Japan to Canada, for $390 USD. Believe it or not, that was a great deal for this camera in like-new condition in todays market. I wanted something small and discreet for travel, which should do the trick with the 27mm pancake lens. I previously had an a6000 for that purpose, but I traded it for an X-H1, which is too big to be semi pocketable. I previously had an x-t1 (which I foolishly had traded for the a6000 - but then traded the a6000 for the X-H1 so it all worked out 😊), and loved the images from the xtrans-ii sensor, so I can't wait to see the results of the xtrans-i sensor. I will happily put up with the other annoyances of the x-e1 vs the later x-e models for what is the GOAT sensor of mirrorless cameras.
I just bought a XE2 from Craigslist for $360 with battery & charger. Last week I was in NYC and saw a XE2 for $300 on Craigslist . I didn’t think I was so smart after that. I think of the XE line as the XTxx of the XPRO bodies without the fancy EVF. This is a nice small, lightweight body. Glad I bought one. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
@martingreenberg870 Congratulations! Not sure what the condition of those x-e2's was, but they sound like good prices. My x-e1 is basically brand new. Not a single mark on it anywhere, including the telltale spots. No dust anywhere. Even had the protective film still on the lcd. And it came in the original, serial number matching box. I don't mind paying a small premium for that stuff. And bought on eBay, so it's nice to have their buyer protection when getting something sight unseen from so far away. I specifically wanted the xtrans-i sensor, as I already have the xtrans-iii in my x-h1, and I had the xtrans-ii in my x-t1. I am a bit of a nostalgia geek, so this was the perfect purchase for me, being the first 16mb xtrans sensor produced by Fuji. I have paired it with the Fuji 35mm lens, and I am super impressed with what this old, 16mp camera produces. My wife and I recently retired and have a lot of travel planned, starting with the Christmas markets in Europe this December. This little gem will be with me on all our travels, capturing images from around the world. It couldn't be a better fit for its intended use. As for the viewfinder of the xpro, I am not a fan of OVF so the EVF-only viewfinder of the x-e1 is perfect for me. BTW, if you want a nice film recipe for your xe2, check out the 'vivid color' recipe under the xtrans-i tab on fujixweekly dot com. I do a little post processing with a preset I made with Luminar Neo, and the results are spectacular. Now I just need to improve my composition skills 🙃
I'm not sure that's correct. As I understand it, the X-E1 has the X-Trans 1 sensor, as in the X-Pro 1, while the X-E2 has the X-Trans 2 sensor, as found in the X-T10 and X-T1. Certainly the film simulations bundled with the X-E 1 and X-E2 confirm that.
@@zenography7923 I stand corrected! It's true that the X-E2 has X-Trans II sensor! What I meant was, they have the exact same amount of pixels. I think you said, in the video, that X-E1 has 12mp sensor. That's what confused me..
Great video. Just got the X-E2s last one from a secondhand manufacturer although almost twice the price you mention so I think its cult status is starting to push its cost up, but can't wait. I've had a couple of Fuji's in my time, and no other system has created the same feeling of shooting; feels like more of an experience compared to the other systems I've used. Miss that feeling so can't wait to get it. The cooking of recipes is something I've never done - do you have videos on that by any chance?
Own a X-E1 and a X-e2s. Only weakpoint is the focus peaking. For manual lenses i prefer my X t30 though which seems much more accurate to me. The look of the Oldies though is just awesome. Autofocus of the X E2s is also quit good imo.
I found the peaking pretty good on this one, as good as my X-T3 I think. Peaking is reasonably good on all the Fujifilm cameras I've tried, with the exception of the X-Pro1/X-E1. The best peaking I've used is on the Sony full frame cameras though.
You have neatly outlined my position, Nigel. I have the X-E1, the X-E2s, and the X-E3. Three generations of X-Trans sensor, and each with their own unique qualities. I cannot see myself ever wanting any other digital camera than my three X-E Fuji's. I had a look at the X-E4 and it isn't in the same game as the earlier X-E's - I believe that Fuji have dropped the ball with that iterstion. Because I now have my perfect (for me) line-up of digital cameras I am adding to my film camera and lens collection. I've just added a Nikkormat FT2 and a Minolta SRT303; I have some Nikon glass, but have also bought an MC Rokkor 50mm f1.7 for the SRT303. Another top quality Sunday video, have you decided to do the cheap 50mm lens video yet, I'm looking forward to it. Regards George
Agreed about the XE4. It's killed the series for me, which was originally a mini X Pro line. Had the other 3 but only kept the 2. It's faster than the 1 and better peaking, and more enjoyable than the 3 which has a few compromises.
Same here. I bought the E3 on release, loved it so much I picked up the E2. I gave it to my grandson when he lost his Canon Rebel XTi in a fire. I missed the E2 and found an almost new E2s, which I like even more than the E2. A couple of weeks ago I found an E1 in almost new condition. They are all great cameras and I use the E1 and E2s mostly with vintage film lenses. When needed I can use my H1, which is great for certain circumstances. However, I usually reach for an E camera.
@@dougmacmillan1712 Interesting you prefer the XE2S as most people won't state a preference - they say they are too similar. Will wait until I can hold one in hand, but I assume it's a bit nicer. Always keeping an eye out for one I can try in person.
I follow you for quite a while and I really enjoy your channel. You’re a passionist about photography and you know quite a lot. Thanks for passing your knowledge and/or your opinion to others. I also love photography but I don’t dare to speak it out on a channel for the whole world. Anyway, by now I know you like a lot mirrorless cameras and I was very curious to know which is your favorite. If you had only two to choose from and you could keep only one which one would you keep? Fuji or Sony?
Now that's a hard question to answer! I think the Fuji approach to digital photography is innovative and compelling and I'd like to see more manufacturers adopt something similar. Digital images can be quite harsh, while the Fuji film sims are almost always delightful. But, I do shoot a lot of vintage lenses and unless you're shooting full frame, the full character doesn't quite come through. In the end then, it would have to be Sony.
The older 16mm X cameras came with a disc with software to open the raw photos, and convert to tiff. I only have experience with the X-M1. (which does have the folding rear screen) That software doesn't work on later models like the T series.
Excellent point about being able to use more detailed jpeg recipes. And you're quite right about the difficulties in peaking on the XE1. I manual focus exclusively. And it's not hard to imagine that I could rely less on magnification with better peaking.
I used point and shoot cameras the past 20+ years for my work. Stop using the cameras since I retired 10 years ago. I want to experience digital camera again for travelling and street photography. There are 2 cameras which interest me - XE2 and X100F. Which one do you suggest I should start with. Thank you.
@@zenography7923 it really is man! Didn’t know it existed before I found one used …. They are rare to find and I got one in mint condition! - such a cool camera paired with the XF27 lens for ultra portability!!
I have one too! Bought it new in 2016... Have it paired with 23mm f2wr. Very good allround setup for every day photography. Have put up an ad to sell it though since i need a little bit of extra 💸... But i think i will hold on to this gem instead!
@@VinceDae Hi. Is the X-E2s really that worth it? There's one on sale at around US$350. Like you, I'm so curious with the 16mpx XTrans2 sensor. I was seriously contemplating on getting an XT1 BUT the eventual peeling off of its skin and warping of the port door just turned me off. I'm looking for a 2nd body and I was considering either a brand new XT2+18-55 (w/1 yr warranty -- US$830} OR an X100v (US$1399) to complement my XT3. But with this X-E2s, it has piqued my interest. If only the one's selling now is in black. Your thoughts?
My Fujifilm journey started with X100 (from new), then X Pro1 (£200), then XE2's (£200), then X-T1 (£300 including battery grip), then XE3 (£350 new end of stock) and finally X-H1 (£750 including battery grip). The X100 and Xpro1 whilst wonderful IQ cameras were lacking in various ways. Both had clunky AF and less than stellar viewfinders. Hence my move to the XE2s, which solved all of these problems. I did need to add a grip to it for better handling, but it is very light and does not add to the weight much at all, unlike the grip I had to add to the XE3 for the same reason. The X-T1 came as I liked the XE2s so much I wanted something with a bit more versatility. It fits the bill perfectly. For me it is the perfect mirrorless camera in terms of size and functionality. It is barely any larger then the XE2 yet gives a nicer viewfinder image and is easier to use I find with MF lenses. All in a better built body. Flirtation with the square format and a desire to try out the newer film simulations convinced me a XE3 would be a good buy. It fulfills these desires, but I do not like the output so much, and those newer simulations really are not very good IMO. It does not fit my hands as well as the XE2s either. I need to sell one of the XE models and I suspect it is going to be the XE3. The X-H1 I got as I need the IBIS for longer telephotos. The image output seems to be slightly nicer than that of the XE3, even though it has the same sensor. It has the best EVF of the lot, but that does not outweigh its disadvantages of greater size and weight, poor battery life and ergonomics that I find not as good as the X-T1. It is a keeper, but only as it fits my niche use of tele lenses. I would not call it a camera I like. I have tried the X-T10 line of cameras but they are a horrible fit for my hands and the same goes for the X-S10. The X-T2,3 and 4 have all piled on weight with each new model and do not appeal for this reason. The Xpro3 does certainly tug my heartstrings but it is hard for me to justify the cost of this model at present.
Sounds like the XH1 and XE2 is your perfect combo. I sold the XE3 twice and didn't miss it for a second. I missed the XE2 for 2 years until I got another. I get amazing battery life on the XE2 using the latest "s" version of the battery. Maybe double what I get on the X Pro 2 for some reason.
@@blood_n_guts_murphy The X-T1 is the perfect one for me. The X-H1 I need for its IBIS (very useful for my MF legacy telephotos). Without it I would get rid of it like a shot . It is too big and bulky. I like the XE2 as a back up or just for a change over the X-T1. I just feel no love for the X-E3.
@@richardhale9664 I might have to get an XH2 for 8K, will probably be even bigger. Maybe I should change system for video. Will see what Sony come up with or their might be a wildcard like Sharp or Sigma with a little modular camera. As for the XE3, I think Fuji put no love into it. I look at my XE2 admiringly. Its just a quality crafted camera. The XE3 has the cheap looking stuck on rear thumb rest and feels less solid etc.... I think it went from being a mini X Pro to a budget line. Now it is officially the budget line as the 2 bayer cameras seem to have been axed. I was constantly in awe of the XT3's features but need a left EVF for photos. It was just a tool, whereas the XE2 and X Pro 2 are enjoyable. Sounds like the XT1 is lighter. I wish I had a smaller nose and liked central EVFs because the XT line have bigger EVFs. I may have felt the same then.
Hi there - I think you made a mistake on X-E1 camera sensor details - it is not a 12Mp - it is also 16Mp sensor. And yes - it is X-Trans1 sensor in X-E1, and X-Trans 2 in X-E2 - this is the difference.
@@zenography7923 No need to apology here - I am enjoying your videos on different things here. I own X-E1 - and funny enough - I prefer it to my Nikon Z5 when it comes to work with manual focus lenses - X-E1 (with its limitation in pixels in display and EVF - it much better in determining in-focus moments. You 100% right that X-E1 not shines in peakin support, but the zoom button function makes this issue irrelevant.
Thank you! I'm debating between an e1 and an e2 because the e2 is 35 dollars more expensive and I do appreciate the look of the e1 photos, however, with some editing, I think I could achieve the look of the e1 (or get close) and the shooting experience on the e2 would be much better.
Hi, I recently bought the XE2S. It only has 6 film simulations (5 of which are monochrome). The firmware is Version 1.11 which appears to be the latest. Can you help? Thanks Karin
The X-E2 has become so rare and expensive (at least in the US) that I think I'm going with an X-T2 instead. I mostly blame Zenography (and Chris Orange) for the high price these are fetching on the used/ebay markets. 😅I have an X-M1 for my xtrans 1 needs but it's not quite the same with a lack of an EVF
A most interesting video, as always. I am looking for a small carry-everyday camera and have narrowed down my choice to Fujifilm XE-2 or Leica X1, which would you suggest please, or should I look elsewhere with a maximum budget of £450? If it helps, I am an older person who started using film in 1958 and who loves the look of film images.
Thank you Nigel for your knowledge and enthusiasm and also your presentation skills(why do the Americans talk so fast - their Cowboys didn’t used to do(well not according to Hollywood). I have been fiddling with cameras for nearly 60 years now, never having had a lot of money I have bought second hand except for the last few years. I have owned a Leica M3(which I sold at a silly price when I was hard up) but I remember the feel of it which made me want to take photographs. I did cover 8 Weddings of which I charged for 7 of them(does that make me semi professional?) using a Mamiyaflex C330 and a Canon F1 aided by a Weston Master V. That modular Canon was so easy to use and so reliable and that is what attracted me to the SLR Fuljifilm cameras and I bought the XT2 early last year. BUT it is not an easy camera to use if you use the digital menu. Every so often I dip into the handbook, then I watch instructional videos and it is still a mystery to me. I am sticking to Aperture Priority with ISO on Auto for now. I do appreciate the colours that come from that wonderful sensor but I need a simpler camera and have been looking at test reports on the X100 though I suspect the digital menu will be as complicated. Nigel’s report on the various cameras in the Fujifilm range has focused my attention on the XE2 as I would welcome the smaller size. Advice would be welcomed.
I have seen almost all the details of this amazing and interesting and beautiful Fujifilm camera. I have a query. Is thus fantastic enjoyable camera which is highly regarded is meant only for the professionals. Will beginners face any difficulty or stumble in many ways if one desires or possess a Fujifilm camera. Eagerly waiting for the answer.
This is a camera for everyone. It has a fully automatic setting, so no need to think about the technical stuff if you don't want to. But it's also a fantastic camera for learning about the technical stuff too - and once you understand the exposure triangle it's really not that hard. If you can drive a car or operate a washing machine you can learn to use this camera - or just keep it on auto for an easy life!
The only thing I didn't like about all the X Trans 1 cameras was the lousy focus peaking ! I actually prefer that sensor's film like look. I use an XT-3 and an XE2s now and am very happy with both.
I could get a Fuji x-E 2s with Fuji xc16-50 Objektiv und Hand Grip HG-XE1 for 400 Euros , but the seller cannot tell the shutter count. Is this a bad sign?
Hello, I would like to purchase one... but I've some doubt about the digital range finder. I usually shot with the reflex analog and digital. I have never loved the rangefinder cameras... but it is the only solution for using the old M42 lenses.
This one isn't a rangefinder camera, just a rangefinder style body, eg the viewfinder is on the left, rather than centrally placed as in an slr style camera like the X-T1 for example. In all mirrorless cameras, focus peaking is by far the best option for focussing manual lenses and they pretty much all have that, this one included!
hey i want to buy a new camera but confused which one, xa3 or xe2, i just confuset about the megapixel, is there enought in 2022 and 3 or 4 years later with 16 mp?
Unless you're blowing up images to the size of a house, 16 megs is more than you need, in 2022 or 2042! I'd go for a Fuji with an x-trans sensor - that's the X-T, X-E or X-Pro cameras. Personally I'd avoid the XA cameras as they have a conventional, slightly less nice sensor. Hope that helps!
gotta say I would change to Fuji or add one of the X-T cameras to my collection, but for now I feel very confortable with the Canon Eos M, the original one, pairing it with Magic Lantern for cinematic filming. Would love to hear you opinion on this camera and combo since it's so lens-versatile . Again, thank you for your deeply, passioned reviews
I really enjoy your videos and the focus on affordable cameras and lenses, I think it also helps to stop global warming giving it a long use intead of change gear every time a new camera comes to market, I have a Canon eos m6, what do you think about this camera? if someday a eos m6 comes to your hands please do a review!, thank you again, so many good videos!
The X-E2 is much better than the X-E1. So much faster in all areas. If you are patient you can pick up a mint X-E2 off ebay for around abouts £200.00. I did! Put the 35mm f/1.4 on the X-E2 and you will be ever so happy with the results! ... especially in B&W. You will be so happy... you will have a huge happy grin on your face!
I think the XE2s is the best of the bunch. Great sensor and film simulations and faster focus and better focus peaking and great for adapted lenses and a film like look and better in camera processing and a nice feel in the hand that you can get a grip frame for and a thumb grip also and............. I obviously could go on and on and I will never sell this one and may even get another !
I owned the XE-2 and liked it, but I replaced in couple months and did not return to Fujifilm due to two things. The body of the XE-2 is gripless and front heavy with lens, and the menu design is not user friendly, that two things made me physically tired using the camera, although it took very high quality photos especially in high ISO compared with other APSC-C cameras.
little note : the X Trans 1 sensor is 16.3 MPx, just like the X Trans II. Actually, the X Trans 2 is very similar to the X Trans 1, main differences being the AF performance and noise reduction FUji only use 12MPx APS-C sensors in the original X100 (which is also a Bayer array rather than XTrans)
I have and xpro 1 and 2 and find I like using the EVF more, but I also kind of like having an OVF. However, I do not really and truly think on those models that the OVF gave me much help or worth per se, but I kind of always like to have one more bell or whistle. I have found generally and for quite some time that I much prefer an EVF, especially when it can provide a preview of the final image according to the camera adjustments. In such cases you really get to see the final image before you shoot it. This goes off topic but brings up ETTR. While are are those who advocate ETTR and the like, basically that provides an image you are usually NOT after, but possibly a more flexible raw file for processing. WHY NOT just shoot it the way you want it to look, IF that possobility presents itself? Sure if you crush the darks or blow the highlights originally; you lose flexibility, BUT if that IS the image you want why play with ETTR at all? I mean why maximize sensor data beyond what you want? Besides, if you shoot ETTR later you may have NO idea why you shot the image since all the subtle shadows and dancing litgh is subsumed into the usually over exposed raw file. Every time I shoot ETTR I end up taking a second shot that looks the the one I really want anyway. Shoot things the way you want, but basically the ETTR technique is kind of an annoying work around that really should be reserved to situations of landscape bracketing and the like, IMHO.
Same here. Just turn them off and set the first item in the Q menu to do nothing. Only lingering issues is moving the rear wheel when using and XC or 27mm lens.
This man is the David Attenborough of Fujifilm cameras. Very enjoyable!
Thanks so much, that's quite an honour!
He costs me money on ebay.

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but: if you wear headphones you can hear the sound of your watch tick throughout this video. That's a superb mic you have there!
Thanks for the video.
If I'm not mistaken, my XE1 and my XPro1(X Trans 1 Sensor)
also 16.3 megapixels, just like the XE2. (X Trans 2 Sensor)
My XE2S is 16.7 megapixels.
Correct. The X-E1 is also a 16 MP sensor, not a 12MB.
Many thanks, glad you're enjoying them!
@@zenography7923 absolutely sir.
Certainly for a budget choice the X-E2 and S have a lot to offer - pretty much the sweet spot in older Fuji cameras imho!
Saved my money 🙂
I bought the first piece of XE2 released in the UAE and still with me.
Nice work! 👍
Many thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
The peaking is a massive difference. So much easier to focus manually.
I use Lightroom for the sims instead of JPG as you can get them all. But did like them on the XE1.
Agreed. I also find the electronic shutter on the X-E2 a very useful addition as it is totally quiet
I have a X-E2 since 2014 and I like it very much.
The only thing I wish for a future X-E5 would be the IBIS.
I think so - a great little camera!
I repeat myself, but simply a superb review! I for one love
1:st and 2:nd generation of digital cameras. Regards Ulf.
Thanks Ulf, glad you enjoyed the episode! There are certainly some incredible bargains among the earlier digital cameras right now - happy days!
Great video. Always is a pleasure heard you talking about cameras and lenses… many thanks mate!!
I have X-M1 and X-E1 and find myself using the X-M1 the most because I love shooting from the waist level- really nice images
I would bank on cult sensor over cult camera.
Please pardon my error - the X-E1 does indeed have 16mp! I'd beg to differ about the X-T1 though - it seems to be rather a sought after camera!
@@zenography7923 yes it is. Cant believe i sold it
X-T1 was last year, Fall/Winter 230-250 EUR, now people found out about the Sensor, and prices raised, sad but true. I got my graphite Edition T1 for 300 bucks last year. I always wanted the T1, but since i paid already 900 EUR for the X-E1 after release, i don't wanted to spent a fortune onto the T1 afterwards.
This man is the David Attenborough of vintage lenses. I love vintage lenses and all of his review about them.
@Andrew Baxter: my thoughts exactly! I just sold my X-E3. The jpg's were okay but lacked 'soul', they weren't typically Fuji. Went back to my XT-1.
@@miller1520 Funnily enough I bought an XT-1 two weeks ago, I find the ergonomics much better than the XE series - loving it so far with TTAtrisan lenses!
@@andrewbaxter9395 Very true! But the XE is sometimes more convenient for street stuff because it is even smaller than the xt1. Cheers!
@@andrewbaxter9395 I bought an X-T1 and it was my favorite camera all around- especially loved the hand feel and solid build quality but had to send it back to MPB due to a weird sensor issue….
After the accident, I immediately bought the then brand new X-E3 and while it’s technically a better camera, I never connected to it the way I did with my X-E2.
most people sell their x-e3's and buy an x-e2 and never look back.
It's a great little camera, no doubt about it! I loved using this one.
Great clip for Fuji X beginners!
This video really has me thinking, I have never tried Fuji, but this might change it. Well done!
This is a fantastic camera, well worth picking one up.
Thanks for the vids.
The X-Trans 1 sensor is 16mp too by the way not 12mp
The original X100 had a 12mp sensor but that was bayer.
Correct! 👍
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fujifilm_X-Trans_sensor
Xtran gen 1 is also 16mpx. But the best modern mirrorless Fuji sensor is the one in x100. It is a 12mpx Bayer sensor. The only Fuji that I would shoot raw in. Other xtran sensors I only shoot jpeg.
I've heard many good things about the X100 - I'm sure I'll get to try one in time!
Xt1 was the camera that made me and many others say, I don’t need full frame. And, I believe it made more people leave full frames than any other camera.
You hit why I keep my old CCD sensor cameras I think the pictures look different than the CMOS image pictures I think they also have a film look
Agreed - it's a shame CCD technology wasn't developed.
@@zenography7923 On the upside, that means you can get professional CCD cameras for a low price :)
I started out with a Pentax K-10D and kept it even after getting a more modern body.
Glad to hear it - I don't think you'll be disappointed!
Nice one Nigel again food for thought digitally just have 2 canon DSLRs

Try an XE2 for £250 with the perfectly decent 16-50 kit lens or £200 alone. Massive difference in weight. You will take it when you wouldn't take the DSLRs. At no point did I want to use the wife's 6D when I had the XE2 in hand.

It is the best Fuji imho. I went back to it after an XT3 and I would choose it over my X Pro 2.
I know exactly what you mean - a really nice little package!
Regards.
It's not perfect, for sure, but on the whole it's a very nice little camera!
I did exactly the same! Both in black.
A fantastic little machine, no doubt about it!
Terrific episode !
Glad you enjoyed the episode! If you do decide to get one of these, I don't think you'll be disappointed!
@@blood_n_guts_murphy
I'm not sure what Canon's you're familiar with but when using sharp lenses, my 5D2 is as a sharp as heck.
@@blood_n_guts_murphy
Thanks.
Glad I have my x-s10 now.
I love my XE-2, excellent BW and incredible JPEGs
A great little camera, no doubt about it!
the Fuji X-E2 is the only camera I never knew I needed until I bought one. I've had my used body since 2017, and all I want is a second body to replace mine if I need it. I have the 18mm f/2.0 on it, again all I need.
That sounds like a very nice set up!

These two cameras have the exact same sensor. X-e2 has some software tweaks, and as you said, it has a much better usability for manual lenses!
Another great insight. Many thanks.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Hope you will edit this explicitly to correct the error about sensor resolution, as BOTH cameras feature 16mp.
Sorry, pardon my error!
@@zenography7923 NBD. After all, mistakes are the origin of many of us! :)
Any opinions on pairing an XE2 with a Minolta 58mm/1.4 Rokkor PF lens?
Regards
George
You have a nice collection there George - three X-E cameras sounds like the perfect trio! Some very nice cheapy lenses are coming soon!
I think the days of software discs are long gone - unfortunately!
Excellent point about being able to use more detailed jpeg recipes. And you're quite right about the difficulties in peaking on the XE1. I manual focus exclusively. And it's not hard to imagine that I could rely less on magnification with better peaking.
I loved the X-E1, but for me the peaking was a weak point. The X-E2 is a more rounded camera in that respect.
I got this camera and a Nikon converter that takes drop in filters inside.
I want to try the Nikon 135MM 2.8
I used point and shoot cameras the past 20+ years for my work. Stop using the cameras since I retired 10 years ago. I want to experience digital camera again for travelling and street photography. There are 2 cameras which interest me - XE2 and X100F. Which one do you suggest I should start with. Thank you.
The best unicorn camera from Fuji is the X-E2s… basically the speed of the X-E3 but the sensor of the X-E2 //. So special
Now that sounds like an interesting camera!
So many Fujis to choose from! It certainly seems you've found the right solutions for you!
My apologies, and thanks for the correction!
I think on balance the e2 is the better camera, all things considered - if you're using vintage lenses that is. If not, both are definitely in play!
I haven't used the X1 so can't comment, but an someone who started with film will be right at home with an x-e2!
@@zenography7923 Thank you!
That is why bought the xe4 and tweak the simulation.
Happy with my xe4
The only thing I didn't like about all the X Trans 1 cameras was the lousy focus peaking ! I actually prefer that sensor's film like look. I use an XT-3 and an XE2s now and am very happy with both.
I could get a Fuji x-E 2s with Fuji xc16-50 Objektiv und Hand Grip HG-XE1 for 400 Euros , but the seller cannot tell the shutter count. Is this a bad sign?
If you had a choice between X-E2 and X-T2 which would you choose (assume they cost the same)?
Hello, I would like to purchase one... but I've some doubt about the digital range finder. I usually shot with the reflex analog and digital. I have never loved the rangefinder cameras... but it is the only solution for using the old M42 lenses.
This one isn't a rangefinder camera, just a rangefinder style body, eg the viewfinder is on the left, rather than centrally placed as in an slr style camera like the X-T1 for example. In all mirrorless cameras, focus peaking is by far the best option for focussing manual lenses and they pretty much all have that, this one included!
@@zenography7923 Thank you very much! I'll buy one.
hey i want to buy a new camera but confused which one, xa3 or xe2,
i just confuset about the megapixel, is there enought in 2022 and 3 or 4 years later with 16 mp?
Unless you're blowing up images to the size of a house, 16 megs is more than you need, in 2022 or 2042! I'd go for a Fuji with an x-trans sensor - that's the X-T, X-E or X-Pro cameras. Personally I'd avoid the XA cameras as they have a conventional, slightly less nice sensor. Hope that helps!
You said the x-e1 sensor was the most coveted x trans…so which is it?
On your review of the X-E1 you say you prefer it over the X-Pro 1. Do you feel the same way about the X-E2 and X-Pro 2?
I haven't tried the X-Pro 2, so can't say I'm afraid!
i actually use the ovf on mine all the time. i only use the evf when i have a tele lens or voigtlander lens.
I am happy with my XE-2S so compact and so nice with my 50 and 35 mm fuji lenses..love it!
One of the nicest mirrorless cameras I've used, for sure!
gotta say I would change to Fuji or add one of the X-T cameras to my collection, but for now I feel very confortable with the Canon Eos M, the original one, pairing it with Magic Lantern for cinematic filming. Would love to hear you opinion on this camera and combo since it's so lens-versatile .
Again, thank you for your deeply, passioned reviews
I'm going to look at some Canon cameras soon - stay tuned!
am i missing something here, i thought the x-e1 was a 16 meg sensor not a 12 as is the x-pro 1?
You're right - my mistake. Sorry!

Nigel, I enjoyed your video. I think the X trans ! sensor is also 16 megapixels not 12 as you say.

You're right of course Edward - my mistake - apologies!
I will try some of the modern Fuji lenses soon - stay tuned!
I think the XE2s is the best of the bunch. Great sensor and film simulations and faster focus and better focus peaking and great for adapted lenses and a film like look and better in camera processing and a nice feel in the hand that you can get a grip frame for and a thumb grip also and............. I obviously could go on and on
and I will never sell this one and may even get another !
"Hello Nigel, informative vids, my bank balance is unhealthy because of you". 🙂
I can hear your watch ticking from the other side of the screen
These Fujifilm cameras are really nice but command a premium price even as second-hand! 400-500 euros for X-T1 depending on condition.
little note : the X Trans 1 sensor is 16.3 MPx, just like the X Trans II. Actually, the X Trans 2 is very similar to the X Trans 1, main differences being the AF performance and noise reduction
FUji only use 12MPx APS-C sensors in the original X100 (which is also a Bayer array rather than XTrans)
You're right of course - thanks for the correction!
Agreed - like all techniques, use when needed but not otherwise!
XE 1 16 MP!
Yes, sorry, thanks for the correction!
The only issue I have with these compact Fuji cameras is that I constantly hit the buttons at the rear and have to get out of unwanted modes
Agreed - they are easy to hit accidentally!
Same here. Just turn them off and set the first item in the Q menu to do nothing.
Only lingering issues is moving the rear wheel when using and XC or 27mm lens.
The X trans 1 has 16mpx too, not 12
what are your favorite vintage lenses to use with the XE2?
X20, X-E2, or both?
x-e2 for me!
X30 and X-E2 for me 😄
