I've read or watched a million Fujifilm reviews over the years. This might be the best one I've ever watched. You hit what is important and skip what isn't.
That’s why I bought it. I didn’t need super anal crisp photos. The color is superior to my taste. Honestly I shoot my Kodak Retina IIIc with Ektar 100.
This is the video that I've been waiting for and didn't know. I've been killing myself about whether or not to upgrade from my X-T2. turns out you convinced me to stop obsessing and just learn to use it better
@@quiver99 sorry to disappoint you, the Fuji X-T 1 has an x-trans II sensor. The first gen is in the x-pro 1, 2nd gen is in the XT1, and the 3rd gen (24Mp) is in the x-pro 2 and XT 2
I have an X-T1. It’s my main camera. Been finding lately it’s so much nicer to use the camera profiles in Lightroom as opposed to Adobe color. It’s like a whole new photograph
I think stuff like this *can* matter in one way: having a camera (incl. it's sensor) that you like makes it you more likely to take photos. After moving to Fujifilm I started taking *way more photos* both because they felt good to use and because I liked the results so much.
I am a concert photographer and when I moved to the X-T2 from the X-T1 I eventually had to go back because of the noise characteristics into RGB stagelights. The only camera I've bought since then is another X-T1 for backup... The front desk and editor both commented I had been going a little bit crazy with the ISO lately, I had to explain that it's the same ISO but a newer camera... There's not even any more noise in the X-T2's output, it's just more intrusive for some reason Edit: It was X-T3, I skipped the X-T2
Your response intrigued me, so I did a teeny bit of reading. Whether this is relevant or not I don't know. Apparently the X-T1 at ISOs higher than 1600 doesnt add any sensor analogue gain, but merely uses image processing, unlike the X-T3. Maybe if you shot in RAW on the X-T3 and kept the iso at 1600 (or at it's 2nd base ISO 800) and did post processing for well exposed JPGs, the results could have been similar. I don't know, your experience is interesting. I wonder if downsampling/similar res settings could play a part too.
@@Paul_Rohde Yes, but it's not simply a matter of "more" or "less" noise, it's about what it looks like in a small newspaper photo. If you print it at 100% size you may not notice, or even 16MP X-T1 vs. 16MP crop of the X-T3. But when you zoom out you notice that the noise *spread* of the X-T1 is even across the frame, while the X-T3 has these clusters in certain places where it's more or less and when you view it from afar it can be mistaken for compression artifacts basically.
@@Vinterloft Well your response hasn't reduced being perplexed. It would make an interesting short story online or on RUclips just to display what the difference is. Not knowing the full workflow in detail, it's hard to say, but the fact you can't notice it in a straight 100% crop infers the X-T3 is Ok, and that something else is going on? Maybe the processed bit depth between the two, or the file being used is different that's not working out well with the current way processing is undertaken for the printing workflow. This &/or could be something akin to Moire interference? Seeing what is actually happening could be illuminated by somebody in the know.
@@Paul_Rohde Hmm moiré would be more of a problem for the X-T1 since it doesn't have an AA filter but the X-T3 does, though. I might get another X-T3 some day and test them more thoroughly next to eachother
It would be great to know if you still use the XT1 as a pro. I think there are a lot of better cameras now, in Fuji and other brands too. But, well if the XT1 still works well maybe there isn't a reason to change the camera
My Fujis are X-Trans 1. The X-Pro1 has the original processor, the X-M1 has the MkII version of X-Trans1. I even have the 2/3" sensor X10 with EXRCMOS sensor. Old school but great results.
Not exactly right into this term. 1st things first, the original X-Trans I Sensor is into the X-Pro1, X-E1 & X-M1. Then the X-M1 is a special case, because it does feature the EXR II Processor - whileas both the Fujifilm X-Pro1 & X-E1 feature the original EXR Pro Processor, all right? :) The X-M1 is missing some of the customization features, for instance, you can't add a (digtal) red, green, blue, yellow or -orange filter via menu. My Fuji's are the X-E1, E2, M1 & T1, and the X100 L.E.
I experienced the same with old Olympus cameras. The 12MB sensors have a more punchy color rendering that the more modern, higher resolution sensors. Since I am rarely shooting raw I clearly prefer the old sensors so long a higher resolution isn't really mandatory. Your video makes me interested to purchase an old Fujifilm X-E2S for street photography. Thank you for all the work you put into this video.
Several years ago, I owned the X-T1, and while I absolutely detested the autofocus capabilities, I cannot deny the fact that I enjoy the photos I created with it. Not only were the images SOOC pleasing, but the 16MP resolution felt a lot more detailed than one might expect. I have bird photos made with the X-T1 and the 90mm f/2 (and yes, I agree, nothing about that combo says “good for bird photography”) where I cropped the living snot out of the files, and still you can see the details of individual feathers when zoomed in 1:1. Unless the plan is to make huge prints, very few people really need the extra resolution of modern cameras.
the reason teh X-T1 felt so detailed for a 16MP sensor is because it does not have an antialiasing filter. On bayer sensors, it can cause moiré patterns on stuff like fabric etc, but X-Trans sensors greatly reduce that and don't need one
Do you know why they started using AA filters in later models? Fuji’s own marketing team bigged up the lack of need for an AA filter that the X trans allowed so it’s strange they started using them again.
Your channel is a refreshing mixture of all aspects of photography, and I think it's fantastic. A tonne of time and effort went into this and many of your other vids, it's most appreciated. You convinced me to try fuji for the first time (long time canon enthusiast). I got an x-t20 this time last year and I've had a fantastic year of finding more joy in photography. All I can say is thank you, sir 🙏
Apart from color rendering and ISO performance differences all other "advantages" of older sensors (more contrast, more punch) are easily explained by wider DR of the newer ones which makes those advantages technically disadvantages). Which is why Omar ended up giving advices how to make your newer camera behave like the older one and not the opposite)
On a technical level, yes, the newer X-Trans sensors are supperior, but it hardly matters when looking at the images out of the camera. The X-Trans II out of camera JPEGs look have the most pleasing colors and it really does affect how enjoyable a camera is to a user when the photos look good without the need for postprocessing every single one. The tech matters less than the look and feel of photos that it produces. And in this regard X-Trans II is still the king of them all.
I took up photography again earlier this year and after previously using Canon and Nikon, I decided to go with Fuji for a change. I bought an X-T3 that I’ve used mainly for landscapes and I love the sharpness and resolution of the images it produces. I more recently got an X-E2s because of its compact size and styling. The idea was that I’d use my X-T3 for “best” and just have fun with the X-E2s. I’ve found that I’m using my X-E2s more and more. I love the feel of the camera and the image quality is excellent.
Got my X-E2 out again. A little bit of adjustment and the result was more filmlike. The resolution is more than enough, you get images of up to 12x16 inches with an amazing sharpness and resolution. You get a smaller amount of data, faster post-production.
As someone who is looking into buying a Fujifilm camera this video is extremely helpful and fun. I don’t own any Fuji but I’m already a fan. Cheers Omar! Always enjoy your videos.
I have an X-T4 and X-H1 which are great, but I really love images from my old X20 x-trans II 12mpx compact. The differences are subtle but I've come to regard the the X20 images as 'retro Fujifilm'. It was the Fujifilm X20 (which I bought as a pocketable camera) that prompted me to transition from Canon (7D and 5D Mk II) to Fujifilm when the XT-2 was released. No regrets.
We both did the same thing except I bought the X100 and the X-Pro1 after the X20. That little camera was fantastic except for low light (I'd keep it under 800 ISO) and its small sensor has worked miracles for me
Omar, I really enjoy your channel. After I purchased my XT-4 in 2021 I started watching your vids. I appreciate your technical knowledge, clarity, and humor!!!! Since then I added a X100F and a XH-1 and a few lens!! This particular video was great too! Looking for a XT-1!
I’ve been trying to match Portra400 colors with a custom recipe for xtransIV for quite a long time. Finally I went back to the xpro1 and got what I was looking for (almost). As you say it really depends on which colors you prefer. Thanks for sharing 👏
It is better to start with the X-Trans IV with colour accuracy and sharpness then tone it down as required. There are a lot of image settings in Fujifilm cameras that most people leave as default. Want it warmer, make the white balance warmer. Want it saturated, increase colour. The settings are literally in the camera at your fingertips. For a valid comparison of ISO noise you should resample the higher 26/24 mpix images down to 16mpix. Put it another way, take the X-Trans II 16mpix high ISO image and increase it to the dimensions of the 26mpix image. You'll see exactly how much noise there is in the X-Trans II and it will be laughably bad. I keep saying this under videos of people claiming that older sensors are more film-like. It is about the settings, not the sensor! Oh and mpix does matter when you crop, it's the very reason I swapped from X-Trans II to III.
Great Work!!! I am absolutely satisfied with my XT3. It really is a fun and complete system for the photo leaning hybrid shooter. But.. I bought a XE1 for my daughter to get her going in the Fuji system, and loved the JEPGs sooooo much I kept it (BAD DAD, hand smack). Got her a X T100 with a couple lenses as penance for my X Trans Gen 1 love affair (X T100:completely different sensor line but awesome screen design). Get your hands on a Gen 1 X Trans. I know, I know, I am encouraging your GAS, but you know that you are going to complete your collection anyway... Keep up the great work!
This video was soooo important to me.. I am new to Fujifim cameras and have yet to buy one.. I also notice that the X-T2 is the sweet spot for me... yet I have a feeling that I will also end up with an X70.. I would have never known this personal preference before... GRACIAS Omar. NEXT.. lens... start saving.. Lol..
Hi Omar. Watching this brilliant comparison for 5th time. I started with X-T10, then X-T20 and then X-T2. Now full time with Nikon Z6 II, BUT!, I just picked up another X-T10 as 2nd camera. Your good taste is largely responsible for this journey. I'm so happy I have your back catalogue to refer to again Peace and love from Cape Town x
A big difference I noticed comparing my x-t10 and x-t20 was the waxy skin effect of whatever Fuji was doing with skin smoothing at high iso. Something to be aware of for those planning on using the older sets sorts for family pics.
Hi Omar - enjoyed that nerdy episode far too much! I haven't tried to find out the differences like that, but a year ago bought an X-M1as cheap alternative to my X-E3 for survey photos of buildings, and when looking back at the images, thought those are actually really nice! So, yes, get yourself an X-trans I - X-E1 and M1 are not expensive
Any Fuji x camera would be sufficient for having great photos. You can do whatever in post and 16mp is enough. What really matters are the features you need/want
I haven't even been able to sell mine. I bought new rubber parts for it, replaced its electronic parts, spraypainted the hotshoe rails back to black, etc. How did you even manage to muster up the incredible strength to sell an X-T1? xD
I recently sold my T1 for the T2. Apart from the less rubbery grip and more plasticky feeling, the T2 makes a mockery of the T1. Having owned the T1 and Pro1, I say the Pro 1 DOES live up to the cult following.
@@kevrosas1 Try bringing your X-T2 to a concert and shoot an artist lit up by coloured spots, you'll instantly know why the X-T1 still has a place. I had to get rid of an X-T3 because it was awful at ISO 1600-3200 under those circumstances. The noise is too intrusive for even newspaper print. Even if they have mostly similar noise levels, the X-T1 spreads it evenly and organically across the frame whereas the X-T3 had what I describe as clustered 'blotches' which very faintly look like compression artifacts, but it's enough to make even the average Joe notice.
Here's the history: I & II fuji was heavily targeting the nostalgia market. Hence the extreme warmer, contrasty colors. III, IV, V, fuji realized they can tackle the professional photographers as well. Hence the colors are cleaner, more accurate.
After being used to the X-Trans IV in my X-T4, I got an X-Trans II in the X-E2. I was pretty suprised how much lower the DR was, they way the colors looked a bit more stylized instead of natural, but how decent the noise performance was. Plus, on the X-Trans II, I was getting some weird moire, film sims and automatic CA correction don't work in CaptureOne.
A weird thing is happening to me. I lust after a new camera. I’ve spent waaaaay too many hours trawling endlessly through vids on where I should go now….. OM-1….Sony a7iii….new Lumix…..In desperation after getting nowhere, I decided to watch videos about the camera I STILL use: the X-T2. It’s led me to a nostalgic realisation that what I currently hold in my hands is desirable and what I really need. It’s nothing more than a mental reset. Liberated at last!
Thanks Omar, lovely insights. I quite like the jpg output of my wife's x-e2s. She doesn't bother - Provia straight out of cam. Since I have got my x-e3, I always like to fiddle around with the film simulation but I mainly use Classic Chrome, colour +1 or Astia also colour +1 and Acros. I actually do sharpen up the jpg +1, but do jpg & raw. I am still on noise reduction preset 0, why should I since I have got the raws? Xtrans III 24 megapixel helps once you got to crop, Xtrans II files are half the size and I see no difference at 100% on my 4K monitor. The only reason I see to move on to the current Fujifilm line-up is improved autofocus and IBIS, only in order to better use old analog full frame lenses, but not the Xtrans IV sensor for image quality.
I have the original x100 then x-t20 and now x-t3. I love the organic black and white coming from the original x100. However there's something about the x-t20 sensor that i really like. The colors are warm and great for my pets and kids which on both subjects are great for if the sensor can capture high details which the original x100 is not good at albeit the lens on that one is just not very sharp by today's "standard".
Love your analysis. After recently dropping my XT2 on concrete ,no damage. I decided to get a backup or upgrade . After all considerations including the XT 4, I purchased another XT2. I seriously considered the XT3 but the images at 6400 really looked better (to me) on the XT2.
X-Trans IV for me. BSI and higher megapixel plus better focus coverage. I find though that the X-Trans II sensor gives results above what you'd expect from 16mp. So I am going to guess that the benefits of the X-Trans system scale better with lower res sensors. Once the megapixels are up in the 24-26mp. I don't think there's a lot of difference between X-Trans and a Bayer filter. For those that are unsure, why don't Fuji use X-Trans on the medium format cameras? Diminishing returns I think. Colour wise, honestly I don't care. I shoot raw and edit. So it wouldn't make any difference to me.
I still love my old X100s with the X-Trans II sensor and won't sell it. There is something with the image output that looks more like film. Even the grain in high ISO has something of a film grain.
Thank you for this thorough video! It seems the senor got better with each generation, the picture output looks better with the old ones though. The best looking sensor is of course the original X-Trans! 😏 You can get X-E1 for under 100, X-M1 for even less, you should give it a try...
Interesting video. I just picked up an X30. A bit harder to find, only 12 mp, but there was something about it that I really like. It will be fun comparing its X trans 2 sensor to the X trans 1 on my X-Pro1 even with the difference in mp.
X-Pro1, X-E1 and X-M1 have the first generation X-Trans sensor. X-Pro1 and X-E1 have the same image processor EXR Pro but X-M1 has the EXR Processor II; as a result, X-M1 may have slightly different colors from X-Pro1/E1.
Thanks for the time you put into this video. Very interesting results. I think most people will be drawn to the older punchier warmer images, I know I am. This is another reason I am hesitant to get the newest cameras. One think I don’t like hearing rumors about is that Fuji is going to use a 40 plus megapixel sensor in the xh2 and probably the new cameras that follow. I don’t want or need the extra megapixels and I feel most of us don’t either. We would be much better off with a camera that performs better at higher iso and has more dynamic range. Kind of frustrating that this is the way the market is pushing.
You can make the camera output whatever white balance you like. Want it warmer, make it warmer. The 16mpix sensors are not better at high ISO, down-sample a 26mpix image to 16mpix to get a true comparison of ISO. What you will find is that the true 16mpix image loses detail and smears due to the old processor whereas the down-sample retains detail with less noise. Then try up-sampling a 16mpix image to 26mpix. You'll see plenty of noise and loss of detail!
Continued, I use the Sekonic's software for dynamic range you'll be amazed of their differences very low but image impact you are able to massage the file aa lil further TONS OF WORK! I'm with you
Hi Omar, great comparison video. Very helpful for me. I still rock with the XT1 when creating photos, otherwise the iPhone 13 does it 😂 Please keep being you. Don't change a thing. I enjoy your personality coming through the videos.
Wow ! What a fantastic comparison test. Truly , 16 mp is just fine for most things . That said, I was torn between the xt20 and x70 as to which I liked best; taking onboard that the newer cameras can be adaptable to the earlier models as you demonstrated . You cannot go wrong with any of these cameras . We can be tricked in to thinking we need the latest what ever that comes along and in the greater scheme of things it sells cameras , which is great isn’t it? What this confirms is that we all have great cameras and understanding what the camera can produce or put another way, utilising and over coming of a known weakness , we get great photos . If you want pro standard every time then you use the tools that will enable you to do that. That said, any camera within the last five years will produce fantastic images of you use the camera correctly , and use raw to tweak the final result . For personal use and recording personal adventures any of the Fuji cameras can deliver great images . The viewer of your images will not care what camera or lens was used. It is the ability of the image to tell a story that matters . Of course, we all like a little edge on producing our work and you will not go wrong with any of these fantastic cameras . I use an old en10 ii for walk about after I lost my Fuji and I am trilled with what I can achieve from 16 mp image files . Just like the x70, you cannot go wrong with that camera. But given the choice - and this is a little tongue in cheek when I say this, I prefer the xt20 . However, that does not distract from the other Fuji cameras one bit. You see, we all go for the camera we know best and find easiest to use - correction, understand and know best. As you demonstrated Omar, you can achieve identical images of the older style of cameras if you wish to have that look; just know your camera and adapt it to your personal taste. Omar, this was one of the most rewarding videos you have put out there and it reflects the time and effort you spent on preparing it. Do not critique your efforts , as you have done a sterling job and nobody else to my knowledge has come anywhere close to such a comparison . Well done !
I love my Fuji's. Not because of how images look out of camera but how I can use it in the field--dials over menus any day. And, I get all the data I need for use in post processing. So the issue of how the color looks out of camera is not an issue at all. So long as the sensor can capture enough dynamic range so I have the data to work with I am good to go.
Fantastic comparison. Sensor tech is only one aspect of the cameras. When you decide on buying a second hand camera, ergonomics and price also important considerations. For example, the XT1 starts with Xtrans II, so if someone likes that XT-x form factor, there will be no Xtrans I to choose from. I bought XE1 and XT1 at the same time but ended up only keeping the XT1 because it was so much easier to use.
I spent more time than I’ll admit testing the X100F vs X100T. IMO the pre-V 23mm f2 lens peaked at 16MP. Greens and reds from X100T I liked much more.. weirdly.. greens and reds from X100V seem similar to those of X100T. May be why I love the X100V. I’m a huge X-Trans II fan. Pastels from II are 😍.. baby blue, pink, soft colors. I never jive’d with the III & I’ve tried many bodies with it.
If it's just for hobby, Xtrans 2 is GOAT, photography is about feeling, fun, motivation, I would pick XTrans 2 everyday, unless I need some recent feature from newer Xtrans (Grain effect, Chrome Blue effect, Clarity, ...etc)
I remember checking out my X-T10 and my X-T3 at the same time and wondering why the screen looked so much warmer on my X-T10. I thought it was just the screen getting the colors wrong but never actually thought it was how that camera rendered colors! Great video Omar!
Hi Omar, After testing in my scientific and technical imaging business I was intrigued with the X-Trans sensor quality with it's extra sharpness and no Moire issues (We shoot macro, architecture, products and reproduce huge 2m artworks at 300ppi with multiple stitched frames. After testing we bought X-H1s and X-T3s (before the X-T4 release) and sold our Nikon gear - even the Nikkor lenses which were not nearly as good as the Fujinon glass! Like you I have collected vintage X-Trans sensor cameras like the lovely X70 with the 21mm WA adapter, the great little M1 body and the AMAZING X-30, 12Mp Trans sensor camera with a tiny solid magnesium body, tilt screen, electronic viewfinder, OIS 28mm - 112mm f/2 zoom lens. The results from this tiny sensor helped with the incredible, almost AI software. options surpass all imaging logic! These old X30 cameras are still selling for over $900 as new stock in Japan and I love mine so much it would be the last camera I would sell and would be buried with me :-)
Hi Omar, I have both the X-T1 and X-T2 and i have considered buying a X-E1 as they have good reviews for replicating the SLR film images. I love the channel keep up the good work
@@AndyCombes Hi, google Fujifilm X weekly, it's a great site with a whole list of recipes for all the Fujifilm X camera's.Cinestill 800T is really good but it all depends on the look you are after.
I actually moved over from Leica after doing a thorough test of 3 differing shoots; using my Xpro-1 against the Leica M240. The Xpro-1 has the OG sensor. I may have an Xpro-3 now but I'm *not* giving up my Xpro-1!!
Found that really interesting. Thank you. I have an XT-2 and an X-E2 and I’ve done comparisons but not in the same depth as your video. I’ve noticed the difference and I like them both. It’s also made me realise what great cameras I have and sometimes having the most updated equipment is going to give you the most pleasing images.
Thank you, Omar! You did the hard work to prove what we all suspected. Fujifilm have such a huge challenge now to create an X-T5 that will be exciting enough to upgrade from my X-T1 and X-T2.
I love your persistence at testing and your unwillingness to accept pixels at face value, Omar. Way to sleuth it! My XT-3 has been perfect for landscapes for all the reasons you discovered. I have come to rely on it for that sort of, "Here, I bequeath you all the details to the max" so I can have choices. My X-T3 I would NOT take on a street shooting day. I always take one film camera and one digital with me. My X-T20 remains with me when shooting street, along with my Ricoh GR II, which sadly died this weekend. So, I'll be hunting for another street camera and thinking of the x70 or Xe2s. I haven't looked into which would be better autofocus. I can use zone focusing but one of the beautiful things about the Ricoh was snap focus distance that did a lot of the heavy lifting for me. Anyhoo, thanks for another great video!
It all comes down to using RAW postprocessing and personal taste. The XT2 was my first Fuji camra. Somehow that too gives another angle to the perception🤪🤪
I find that it is always easier to take an accurate color and tweak it to be what you want in post-process than it is to take an inaccurate color and make it more accurate. Paired with the better autofocus performance I think it makes sense to buy the newest X you can afford in budget knowing that whatever you get it will be great.
This is so timely for me! I just searched on RUclips for this type of comparison last week! Personally, I’m a hobbyist photographer and I prefer the X70 in each of the comparisons. It’s just more fun and I love Fuji because my straight out of camera shots are usually pretty great. I only own a XM-1 with the X-Trans I sensor so this comparison is missing that for me but I totally get it. Every time I think about “upgrading” I remember the photos I have taken with my little lightweight camera that takes multiple lenses and I stop myself. However, I really do love those images from the X70!
I had "upgraded" to an X-T3 a few years ago from my X-T1. After using it for a few months I knew it wasn't the one for me. It was missing that Fuji "magic". I promptly sold it and replaced it with an X-H1. MUCH happier. I'm hopeful that Fuji makes the X-H2 a lower-megapixel low light monster similar to the A7S3. I fear they are going to go the opposite direction, but who knows. Great video Omar - glad the debate is settled. X-Trans III for the win!!
I'm guessing that won't happen, as it will probably be 8k video capable in need to compete. And 8k video means 33+ megapixels. (Yeah, I know, we don't need those megapixels in photos, so why do we need it in video!) Having greater DR, low noise, and greater sensitivity would be more important to me.
@@Paul_Rohde I think you're right. I feel like we're back to the megapixel race, which is silly. Realistically, 99% of the images are viewed on a mobile device or PC monitor where you literally can't see the difference between 10 and 100 MP. Oh, well...
Thank you Omar, that was a great deal of work you did on our behalf - Thank you. Personally I have an X100S (x-trans II), which I use as my grab-and-go camera for family snaps and usually I use the JPEG output, whereas I have a couple of X-Pro 2 (X-tans III) that I shoot almost exclusively in RAW for more serious work. Also I have an X-Pro 1 (the original x-Trans 1) which I am happy to share with you if you visit London, England. It is a magical camera, slow and frustrating in many ways, but I couldn't part with it as some of the images it produces are magical. This is my new X-Pro Noir camera with a 27mm f2.8 and BW +Y - homage to my old Leica CL.
Thank you for this nice video and great comparison! I have had the X-T1, X-T20, and X-T3, and fully agree that the differences among those were quite small. Maybe the largest ones were in the dynamic range, but that’s just my impression, I have never done such a clinical test as you did. Thanks again, super interesting, as always!
Someday get your hand on an X10, with the EXR sensor. It's is an awesome camera with a great little zoom. When I look back at my X10 pics I want to cry. Out of camera they are so much nicer than any of the XTRANS things I've shot since. Fortunately I still have it, along with my X100T and X S10.
Most excellent comparison work Omar. Informative and entertaining at the same time. You must have put in a lot of time, effort, and eye energy into making this one and it's highly appreciated! At the end of the day, all the nuances of the 3 sensors are inconsequential as long as good composition, lighting, and timing are applied to making a good photograph. However, videos like this are very welcome by yours truly. 🙏
I've shot with all the sensors and I could always tell the biggest difference with the blues. Classic Chrome on the II seems to shift a lot more towards cyan on images with a lot of sky. On the IV CC shoots slightly cooler but the sky is more fine tuned to replicate a Porta like film stock. I typically shoot Provia on the II for that warm natural look and Classic Chrome on the IV for a filmic look.
No significant difference for me between X100T (II), X-E3 (III) and X-E4 (IV) either. This video confirms what I find, change the settings if you prefer a different output.
Your video should goes to private video blog category. You give all those advices, tips and preferences in a such private lesson manner. I love it so much. This is one of my shortest 20 minutes ever on YT.
Thank you for the interesting topic! To me, if the camera put the favorite JPEG images I would save my time to Raw developing. That's my best sensor and engine, all the photographer want. My case X-Trans II. It's not hard to choose one from many.
A big thumb up for doing diligent work! Great video. As an xtrans II shooter (i have x-t10 in my hand all the time) i am super duper ultra happy with the sensor performance, a taste that have been kind of lost in digital world.
The best X Trans sensor is the one you have with you. Hope everyone has a great day!
I knew somebody had to say this!
Can't disagree
☝🏼 First comment . . . and the winning comment!
Aaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!!
The best for you 😂
I've read or watched a million Fujifilm reviews over the years. This might be the best one I've ever watched. You hit what is important and skip what isn't.
X-Trans II squad... UNITE! Seriously though. There are 3 absolutes in life: Taxes. Death. X-Trans II is the best Fuji sensor. ;)
No thank's
That’s why I bought it. I didn’t need super anal crisp photos. The color is superior to my taste. Honestly I shoot my Kodak Retina IIIc with Ektar 100.
We need X trans II images with X trans IV autofocus!
I’m with ya! X-T1, X100T and now an X-E2. My back up... the X100V.🤣 Couldn’t be happier. 📸
Put me down for the xII sensor club. X-e2, x100t owner!!
This is the video that I've been waiting for and didn't know. I've been killing myself about whether or not to upgrade from my X-T2. turns out you convinced me to stop obsessing and just learn to use it better
Same for me! Gonna invest in glass instead :)
Back in the day with film, colours were dictated by the brand. I think this is why I love my XT1 - it's just so 'analogue-digital'!- Great vid Omar!
I have XE1, XT2, XT3, and 100V ...
I can ensure that there's something special about Fuji's 16 MP Xtrans 1 sensor. In my opinion it's THE BEST. 😊🖤🖤
Agree!!
Agree, have had the X-T1, still have t2 and t3. T1 is the best, by far
@@quiver99 sorry to disappoint you, the Fuji X-T 1 has an x-trans II sensor. The first gen is in the x-pro 1, 2nd gen is in the XT1, and the 3rd gen (24Mp) is in the x-pro 2 and XT 2
Yep. I look back at old photos and my x-e1 just had a magical look
Even more special is Fujifilm's CCD sensor from the S5 Pro.
Agree!! Having positive feedback on the rear screen is amazing on Fuji
Also on Canon 5D3 as well
I am a concert photographer and when I moved to the X-T2 from the X-T1 I eventually had to go back because of the noise characteristics into RGB stagelights. The only camera I've bought since then is another X-T1 for backup... The front desk and editor both commented I had been going a little bit crazy with the ISO lately, I had to explain that it's the same ISO but a newer camera... There's not even any more noise in the X-T2's output, it's just more intrusive for some reason
Edit: It was X-T3, I skipped the X-T2
The best one is Xtrans-1 followed very closely by Xtrans -2.
Good thing about the X Trans -2 camera is they have the classic chrome sim.
For me the video stopped at "what matters is taking good quality photographs". That is the best advice you can give.
Then get a medium format, you can take best quality pictures.
@@onurzrhl2859 A quality photo is not dictated by the sensor size / MP count. Keep in mind, some of the best photographers out there still use film.
Xpro 1 has the best x trans sensor when it comes to Black and White looks so much like film the same goes for the Olympus em5
Thank you for all the work you put into this video.
you're right - no visible difference, just interpretation - we are trying hard to figure out different qualities to justify our so-called needs
Exactly. Those on older sensors will justify why they are keeping it, hence all the, old sensors are better, comments.
Just wasn't ready for 'living snot' to which I giggled like a child 😂😂😂
Do you know why they started using AA filters in later models? Fuji’s own marketing team bigged up the lack of need for an AA filter that the X trans allowed so it’s strange they started using them again.
Such a good and funny comment!
x-trans 2: contrast/saturation +30
x-trans 3: contrast/saturation +10
x-trans 4: contrast/saturation +0
:P
Your channel is a refreshing mixture of all aspects of photography, and I think it's fantastic. A tonne of time and effort went into this and many of your other vids, it's most appreciated.
You convinced me to try fuji for the first time (long time canon enthusiast). I got an x-t20 this time last year and I've had a fantastic year of finding more joy in photography.
All I can say is thank you, sir 🙏
I didn’t know how to explain it, but I did notice I liked something about my X-T20 photos more than my X-T30 ones!
yep me too
Apart from color rendering and ISO performance differences all other "advantages" of older sensors (more contrast, more punch) are easily explained by wider DR of the newer ones which makes those advantages technically disadvantages).
Which is why Omar ended up giving advices how to make your newer camera behave like the older one and not the opposite)
Maybe that's another test for another video.
Best photo video of 2021 (so far)! Even us non-Fuji folk learned something.
That little camera was fantastic except for low light (I'd keep it under 800 ISO) and its small sensor has worked miracles for me
I'd always prefer X-Trans I & II, exactly into that term.
I keep coming back to this review every time I want to buy a fujifilm camera.. thank you Omar.
Jeez Omar, this is crazy detailed. Thank you for putting in a ton of work on this!
Thanks, I bought an X-e1 just to give the fuji system ago, now my Nikon just sits around. I need an upgrade in durability, so t2 is the winner.
I love these videos! They makes think of technical stuff but they are always illustrated by superbly inspiring pictures, whatever the sensor!!
5 thumbs up sent your way
A big difference I noticed comparing my x-t10 and x-t20 was the waxy skin effect of whatever Fuji was doing with skin smoothing at high iso.
There are sooooo many variables when it comes to taking a picture and what "look" you want. It WILL drive you insane.
Any Fuji x camera would be sufficient for having great photos. You can do whatever in post and 16mp is enough. What really matters are the features you need/want
my favorite is definitely the 16mp sensor from the xt-1. I will probably sell my xt-2 to get a xt-1 because I miss that camera a lot.
I haven't even been able to sell mine. I bought new rubber parts for it, replaced its electronic parts, spraypainted the hotshoe rails back to black, etc.
How did you even manage to muster up the incredible strength to sell an X-T1? xD
@@thegrayyernaut it was in a horrible condition and I wanted one in silver color , I bought the xt-2 only because of the vertical flipping screen.
Yes I absolutely love the images coming out from my Xt1. I think they are some of my best pics on insta. Wish I'd dived in sooner
Here's the history:
I & II fuji was heavily targeting the nostalgia market. Hence the extreme warmer, contrasty colors.
III, IV, V, fuji realized they can tackle the professional photographers as well. Hence the colors are cleaner, more accurate.
I am getting emotional to see all three generations together. perfect family pic
Which one do you prefer overall between those two different sensor???
I'm deciding between x-s10 and xt1/xe2.
I got an xt2 a couple months ago and absolutely love it like my canon f1 i wanna promise myself to never get rid of this camera till i die
The colors are warm and great for my pets and kids which on both subjects are great for if the sensor can capture high details which the original x100 is not good at albeit the lens on that one is just not very sharp by today's "standard".
use capture one in x100.. its like upgrade quality.. a lot.
Love your analysis. After recently dropping my XT2 on concrete ,no damage. I decided to get a backup or upgrade . After all considerations including the XT 4, I purchased another XT2. I seriously considered the XT3 but the images at 6400 really looked better (to me) on the XT2.
They aren't better, you are looking at 100% crops on sensors of a different size.
The x30 is a fantastic little camera. I love it
X-Pro1, X-E1 and X-M1 have the first generation X-Trans sensor. X-Pro1 and X-E1 have the same image processor EXR Pro but X-M1 has the EXR Processor II; as a result, X-M1 may have slightly different colors from X-Pro1/E1.
Kind of explained why I like the fall foliage photos out of my x-70 straight ooc.
I still rock with the XT1 when creating photos, otherwise the iPhone 13 does it 😂
Please keep being you.
Well done !
Appreciate that thanks!
What an effort, many thanks Omar! Ordered an X-E3 "NOS", interesting to see how it's different from my X-E2...
Really the BEST sensor is clean sensor! =)
I have the first one in a XT 10. It is very very good. That camera with the 18 to 55 lens is a travel combo that works well for me.
If it's just for hobby, Xtrans 2 is GOAT, photography is about feeling, fun, motivation, I would pick XTrans 2 everyday, unless I need some recent feature from newer Xtrans (Grain effect, Chrome Blue effect, Clarity, ...etc)
For me it just shows that older Fuji cameras rock! I have xt20 with the xc 35mm f2.
I remember checking out my X-T10 and my X-T3 at the same time and wondering why the screen looked so much warmer on my X-T10. I thought it was just the screen getting the colors wrong but never actually thought it was how that camera rendered colors! Great video Omar!
Looks like I’ll be upgrading to the X-T1 🎉❤
Hi Omar,
After testing in my scientific and technical imaging business I was intrigued with the X-Trans sensor quality with it's extra sharpness and no Moire issues (We shoot macro, architecture, products and reproduce huge 2m artworks at 300ppi with multiple stitched frames.
I love the channel keep up the good work
Hello, do you irecommend a good film recipe for the X-T1? Thank you
@@AndyCombes Hi, google Fujifilm X weekly, it's a great site with a whole list of recipes for all the Fujifilm X camera's.Cinestill 800T is really good but it all depends on the look you are after.
I prefer the sensor with most color accuracy. Any flavoring can be applied in post.
Indeed, have it correct out of the camera and then muck about with it.
I own a FUJIFILM X-T1 and JPEG are better than with my X-H1.
Thank you, Omar! You did the hard work to prove what we all suspected. Fujifilm have such a huge challenge now to create an X-T5 that will be exciting enough to upgrade from my X-T1 and X-T2.
So glad you did this and not me. Thanks!
Good informations. I own X Trans 2, 3 and 4 cameras. Never thought of doing this. And now I do not have to.
That’s why I got a couple Fuji cameras for the sensors
This!
I like how inaccurate the color is. Gives it so much life!

I have experienced X-Trans I, II and III censors. To me, X-Tans II is the best for colors. But viewers in my channel love the colors of X-Pro 1 a lot!
You can make the colours whatever you want.
X-E1 shooter here, love it sooooo much 💪🏻
Thank you for this nice video and great comparison!
The X-Trans V that's in my X-T5 is the best yet, no question. I'll post some JPEGs in about 18 months.
LOL
😂😂 looking forward to that!
So, all may not be lost.
Maybe create the X70 'look' SOOC simply by creating an appropriate recipe on an X-Trans III or IV sensor camera? :)
I'm using the XT2 and XE4 and honestly I can't tell the difference.
Probably the best video you have made so far ! Never mind Marius below...
Im happy to send you X-Trans I sensor. With the Ex1
