Really hope you talk about Nitrome's original flash games now. Those might only be online games, but they (and Nitrome as a whole) really does deserves more recognition. I'm ecstatic that Bomb Chicken and Nintendo is helping them get more coverage and exposure!
Hey Obi-Wan! Nitrome definitely deserves more credit - I completely agree with you on that! If Bomb Chicken and the great reception can help their company stand out even more, especially their back catalogue, I’m completely down with that.
I hear that! What I wouldn't give for some sort of compilation of previous games on console! I know it would take a lot of work but I would scoop it up immediately! Also, I just discovered your videos and I must say I am impressed. Please, keep up the fantastic and high quality work! I subbed just to make sure I don't miss out on future videos (even if I am doubtful of how important the subscription feature really is).
First off, thank you for subscribing. It really helps and I really appreciate that you take the time to watch my stuff. Secondly, I think a Rare Replay style of Nitrome classics would be fantastic for console E-Shops.
No prob for the subscription, you've earned it! Never played Rare Replay but I'll take your word for it, you seem to know more about this subject than I do! All I know is with the rise of pixel art, indie developers, and nostalgic fans of Nitrome (guilty!), the time has never been better for Nitrome to step into the spotlight!
Okay, to show my cards here: I was first exposed to Nitrome from their editor’s choice gold rush on the App Store and only recently have I started looking at their web games. That being said, they kill it on any platform they release on, and I should have given more credit to that part of their history. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, yokcos 🤣 I appreciate you checking this one out
wow, first time i saw someone making a video in reaction to another video where it's not an amgry fanboy rant disguised as an an analysis on what the first video did "wrong"
Haha I think you’ve got a point here, Chill! I really respect what Mark did with his analysis of Downwell, and it very honestly introduced me to a concept that I’m now overjoyed to see in games. Great stuff 👍 Thanks for your thoughts on this one - I appreciate you checking it out!
Hey Mage - I really respect his points in that video, especially since it introduced me to a concept I had never seen put into words before. From this, I had a way different POV playing through this game that I just needed to talk about, and full props to Mark for helping me find that 👍 Thanks for watching his one!
YES! I’ve been waiting for someone to make a video like this - the folks at Nitrome are MASTERS of simple yet effective design and honestly think Bomb Chicken is one of their best yet. Thanks for making such a great video explaining why - my thoughts EXACTLY! :)
Thank you so much for checking this one out, Puddle! Nitrome have absolutely killed it on the App Store for so long, that I was thrilled their transition to console worked so elegantly. I’m glad you liked the video!
I was going to say... but it seems it's been told already. I feel flash games are often underestimated when it comes to the history of game development (I think there's a good GDC talk), especially since they lead later to some of the mobile and indie movements. Nitrome where a pretty big deal for me back in the day; in a way they were the ones who made me want to make games! Participating in the Nitromejam a while back (2014) was awesome for that reason, I really hope they do another at some point.
Hey Esteban - I think Nitrome’s flash era is worth plenty of respect. Their design philosophies certainly date back to this time period, as many of the dual purpose concepts come from the flash game limitations. Thanks for bringing this up!
Theyre Flash games are all muh better than their mobile games too. They all feel like they could be fully fledged games if more content was added to them, heck, if the test subject series ( including arena ) was packed into one game with mod support on steam and sold for 15 dollars Id buy it instantly.
Hey YupPup! I know that they did flash games prior, but I really was just trying to prove the point that it shared a similar history to Downwell's experience on mobile; however, I will admit that I did make a mistake not bringing up that point of their history - thanks for flagging!
Yeah also most of their old games feature this same design philosophy. as an example look at Fault Line. The game is a basic platformer with the ability to change the stage but it also attacks and disables hazards. I have been a huge nitrome fan since I was a kid so I appreciate their work quite a bit and they live and breath this philosophy. Also good video
Amazing video with outstanding editing! After finding this video through Mark Browns’ tweet I looked further down the videos list and was shocked. Such well written and edited videos with excellent analysis of games but some of them have sub 100 views?? How on earth is this possible?! I truly hope you get the attention you deserve for this absolutely wonderful channel. You earned yourself a sub from me for sure!
Thank you so much for putting the time and care into doing all of this, Phil! That really means a lot to me, so I appreciate you doing it. Thanks for subscribing, and I’m glad to have you around!
Getting to play Nitrome Must Die with a friend locally on joy cons would be so crazy cool! I’m totally with you there, Angus! Thanks for taking the time to check this one out
Hey Izsak - thanks for checking out the video! I completely agree about Nitrome - definitely first rate game devs. I’d love to see them do more console (especially switch) games in the future. I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment! Thank you
I just picked up a physical copy of this for the Switch. I used to play the flash games on their website throughout elementary school, and I’ve still tried to play every one of their games that’s come out since. I’ve only played a couple levels so far, and I’m looking forward to playing the rest of it tonight (since it doesn’t look to be that long of a game). Anyway, I’ll come back to this video once I finish!
Nitrome _really_ needs to put Super Feed Me on the Switch. We all know that it’s never coming out otherwise... Nice analysis though! Edit: Thank you for the heart!
Hey thanks Luke - I appreciate you watching the video! I think a Nitrome pack with 20 of their best mobile and flash games would be great for the Switch. Playing some of the old local co op games with the joy cons instead of a shared keyboard sound fantastic!
Skip the Tutorial - Thank you for the heart! And yes, that is a great idea. I'd love to play that! I remember back in 2010 when Nitrome had announced super feed me for the AppStore and I was super excited! But even eight years later, it's still not being talked about. I just really want them to consider finally finishing it and putting it on the Switch.
Haha man, welcome to the new Tuesday slot videos! That’s definitely the direction I want to head with this series, so hopefully I can deliver on it. Thanks for the continued support, Timmy 👍
While technically correct, Nitrome DID begin with Java games for compatible devices in 2005-2006, they really started to get their footing when they began to make Flash games regularly. I believe this was in 2006, although their website says Copyright 2007. They definitely weren't working with touchscreens then, not in the modern sense anyhow.
Hey Xenotiic - thanks for clearing this up! I focused on the mobile games for this one because of its shared history with Downwell - particularly for the way that touchscreens push for this design. This is not to say that their earlier games didn’t push this strategy as well - it’s just such an integral part of Nitrome (which is great) Thanks for laying this out!
EXCELLENT video. Loved it. This is definitely something I try to do in my own designs. I guess I'm going to have to buy Bomb Chicken to study now too...
Hey Andrew 👋 It’s a really strong example of these concepts - plus a super enjoyable and compact experience to play through. It means a lot to me that you checked out this video - thank you!
Hey Caleb! Thanks so much for checking this one out - I'm glad you liked it. Nitrome is a great fit for Nintendo Switch development, so I would love to see more of their stuff coming up
Great video! hopefully the shoutout from Mark Brown will get the ball rolling for you to start getting some more attention from the videogame community :D
Thanks so much for checking out the video, Tigersonalex! I really appreciate your support. Mark Brown's mention had me absolutely floored, so this whole response has been absolutely crazy to watch.
Yo bro. This a rad video right here. I would defs watch more vids about nitrome's games be they app store or old flash games bc their progression of design is totes intriguing
Hey LF - thanks for watching it! I’m glad you liked it 👍 I’d love to revisit Nitrome in the future, they definitely have so many great titles to discuss. Thanks for the suggestion!
There's also Ikaruga and it's polarity-switching. It's a simple concept that eventually is taken to its logical extreme. The shield and bullets are both color-coded, so you can absorb bullets the same color as your shield. Also you can switch the color of your shield. You also shoot bullets the same color as your shield, and they deal double damage to enemies of the opposite color. As you absorb bullets, you charge up a homing laser attack that, again, deals double damage to enemies the opposite color of you. I'd talk about its scoring system, but this comment already feels like a wall of text.
Hey Zoe! Nitrome does some killer work - I’m more than happy to give credit where credit is due. Thanks for checking this one out - I’m glad you liked it!
Liked your video:D Never heard of Nitrome until now. Found out that they have lots of games released on Google play store. So might as well try some of them.
Thanks for checking out the video, Kumi! I cannot recommend Nitrome’s stuff enough. My first recommendations would be Leap Day and Tower Fortress, which both have great gameplay.
It will be out on Steam TBA, from what I understand. One of my big recommendations for any indie platformer fans. Thanks for checking out the video, John! I appreciate the support.
Hey Megaplantsmaster! More than happy to talk about their company - definitely feature some fantastic near Nintendo design - super good! Thanks for checking this one out!
great video, although you got one thing wrong nitrome's roots are in web games for pc, and even then they were really good at simplicity this is why they had an easy time when they changed their focus to mobile
Hey TGL - thanks for bringing this up! When I said this, I was intending that they do have a history in mobile game design, but not necessarily that is where they got their start. The reason I used this wording was because of the shared history to Downwell - but I understand that this was a little misworded. Good to hear from you - thanks for checking this one out!

I appreciate you checking out the video - sorry about the trigger!
it was just a joke in good faith, I already saw the other replies you handed out, great video overall :) but my inner fable quest registering 7 year old died when you wrote my name with a big G
Interestingly this game resembles their demo of Flightless a game that was supposed to be released on steam but never was, it just dissappeared. I wonder if they revisited the game or if it didn't release because they were reworking it into this the whole time.
Hey Felixmations! I would be sure that some of the ideas and old concepts were brought up when designing this one - but so many of their games follow this sort of design philosophy that it’s ubiquitous regardless the title. Thanks for checking this one out! I appreciate you taking the time to watch it
Hey Jump on Everything - thanks for pointing this out! It was a mis-wording on my part - since I meant roots in that they have history in, not that they started in mobile. The reason for this is their shared comparison with Downwell, so I wanted to bring this up. Thanks for watching this one!
Hey Kav! Glad you enjoyed it - thanks for checking it out 👍 The music is an extended version of Butter Building from Kirby’s Epic Yarn - a great track!

Skip the Tutorial Aah, thanks! It's been ages since I played Epic Yarn, so my memory wasn't exactly serving me. Great video, by the way! It's always wonderful seeing Nitrome games get coverage.
Hey A144 - my point wasn’t that they explicitly started with mobile first - their flash games are great - but more so that it’s an important part of their game design history and a likely trace for these ideas Thanks for the feedback on this!
Skip the Tutorial oh no I mean I miss the flash games they used to make, they stopped making them and went to mobile. However, I am happy about the fact that they may create many more console games in the future. I love the video by the way
Hey Dvir - thanks for pointing this out. I phrased it poorly, because I meant where it started before the console title making, not when it first started period (also, I’m more familiar with this period in their history for comparisons)
Hey Tobias - that’s fair, but it is an essay exploring a concept Mark brought to my attention through his, so it might be labeled a response, or at least another talking point, in the discussion about dual purpose design as a whole. Thanks for bringing this up! I appreciate your $0.02 on it
Hey Nathan! My mentioning of their “roots” wasn’t to mean where they first started, but rather that it’s a key part of their history. Their flash games demonstrate this design too - but I focused on the mobile history because of the parallels with Downwell. Thanks for your two cents on this - good to hear from you!
Really hope you talk about Nitrome's original flash games now. Those might only be online games, but they (and Nitrome as a whole) really does deserves more recognition. I'm ecstatic that Bomb Chicken and Nintendo is helping them get more coverage and exposure!

"mobile game roots"
Ah, I see you haven't played the *best* nitrome games
Okay, to show my cards here: I was first exposed to Nitrome from their editor’s choice gold rush on the App Store and only recently have I started looking at their web games. That being said, they kill it on any platform they release on, and I should have given more credit to that part of their history. I felt really old when he said that haha
Sorry Evan! 🤣
Wait so Nitrome is on mobile now?
My personal favorite is Test Subject Blue (and Green)
wow, first time i saw someone making a video in reaction to another video where it's not an amgry fanboy rant disguised as an an analysis on what the first video did "wrong"

We can't spell game design without mark brown.

I completely agree - they model the masters in some great ways (and even divulge into new expertise!)
Thanks - glad you liked it!

Bomb chicken, I use to be addicted to that Game for a while but yeh nitron patterns are something
I want nitrome to just make some sort of jam pack of a bunch of their flash games for switch and other platforms that would be dope
Getting to play Nitrome Must Die with a friend locally on joy cons would be so crazy cool! I’m totally with you there, Angus!
Thanks for taking the time to check this one out
Great video with some really nice analysis. I've been a long time fan of Nitrome and i'm so happy to see them finally getting some recognition

They have such potential as console developers, I think it’d be too perfect for them to hop on over!
Okay skip, i see you with that intellectual analysis video
Haha man, welcome to the new Tuesday slot videos! That’s definitely the direction I want to head with this series, so hopefully I can deliver on it. Thanks for the continued support, Timmy 👍

Thanks Smance! I appreciate you watching this one 👍
Great analysis! Playing through Bomb Chicken was fantastic! I love Nitrome and hope to see them develop more games for console in the future.

Thank you so much for checking it out, Squid. I’m so glad you liked it - that means a lot to me 👍😁
Thanks for the review! Came from Mark's monthly reading list. I'm buying Bomb Chicken as we speak!
That’s fantastic - it truly is an amazing game. Thank so much for stopping by from the list, Chris 👍 i appreciate you checking it out
great video, the game looks really fun!
also, I deeply appreciate your choice of music. piano butter building is the best!
Hey Deahtwind - thanks for checking out the video! It’s such a great track - that game has killer music
I love both of these games. Thanks for talking about them.
My pleasure, Nicholas! Thanks for checking it out!

Hey Zoe! Nitrome does some killer work - I’m more than happy to give credit where credit is due. Thanks for checking this one out - I’m glad you liked it!
Great job with the editing and like the topic too. Happy fan here.
Thank you so much, gvcdkg! I’m so happy you like the content and I hope I can deliver that consistently to you 👍
Ah yes recognition for the great bomb chicken
Well, this is excellent. Subscribed and buying this game as soon as it's out on PC or non-switch
Thank you so much for the support, Nathan! I’m glad you liked the video and I can not recommend Bomb Chicken enough - definitely worth a pick up
Liked your video:D Never heard of Nitrome until now. Found out that they have lots of games released on Google play store. So might as well try some of them.
Thanks for checking out the video, Kumi! I cannot recommend Nitrome’s stuff enough. My first recommendations would be Leap Day and Tower Fortress, which both have great gameplay.
Doing Great Job Boy...keep it up....I love the channel ...you rock!
Thanks for checking out this one! I really appreciate the support 👍😁
I don't have a Switch, but this Bomb Chicken game looks fun!
It will be out on Steam TBA, from what I understand. One of my big recommendations for any indie platformer fans. Thanks for checking out the video, John! I appreciate the support.
HOLY CRAP, SOMEONES TALKING ABOUT NITROME!
Hey Megaplantsmaster! More than happy to talk about their company - definitely feature some fantastic near Nintendo design - super good!
Thanks for checking this one out!
great video, although you got one thing wrong
nitrome's roots are in web games for pc, and even then they were really good at simplicity
this is why they had an easy time when they changed their focus to mobile

no problem, have an exelent day
Nitrome are truly the best mobile devs. I remember when I was little I found some on a web browser game site, and they made mobile games.
I completely agree, Ronin! Nitrome are some absolute legends in game design - definitely know how to make some killer games
You my good sir have an earned a subscription
Hey MrTinyface! Thanks for checking this one out - good to have you as part of the community!
Great video, needs more views and more importantly, likes
Hey GG - thank you for the kind words! I’m glad you liked it 👍
Thank you so much for introducing me to Nitrome
No problem, Notmar - they’re such pros at game design 👍
Thanks for checking this one out!
my inner final ninja playing 9 year old was very triggered when you said nitromes roots were in mobile games
Hey Guul! Thanks for bringing this up - my point wasn’t that they had started with Flash, but rather that mobile is a part of their history - a significant part to this day. My reason for bringing this up in particular is because of the shared history with Downwell, and especially since Bomb Chicken has started as an iOS title early in development.
I appreciate you checking out the video - sorry about the trigger!
it was just a joke in good faith, I already saw the other replies you handed out, great video overall :)
but my inner fable quest registering 7 year old died when you wrote my name with a big G
Haha sounds good, guul 👍 I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I appreciate you taking the time to watch it
(Starts video) "And it's also one of the most elegantly-designed games..."
Wat
Man I have some real nostalgia over nitrome
Thanks for this video.
Nitrome makes some absolute classics! Thanks for checking it out, GG - I’m humbled by the fact that you liked it 👍
Nitromes roots don't come from mobile games but instead come from flash games just so you know.
Hey Jump on Everything - thanks for pointing this out! It was a mis-wording on my part - since I meant roots in that they have history in, not that they started in mobile. The reason for this is their shared comparison with Downwell, so I wanted to bring this up.
Thanks for watching this one!
great vid! but i gotta ask, what was the bg music?
Hey Kav! Glad you enjoyed it - thanks for checking it out 👍
The music is an extended version of Butter Building from Kirby’s Epic Yarn - a great track!
@@skipthetutorial thank you for replying ✌
My pleasure! Thanks for asking
I have been playing their games since i was 7 its sad seeing their website dying after so long
Hey ImYou - it’s gonna feel like the end of an era. I hope they take some of the best of their games and work toward porting them in a pack on Switch - especially with split joy con co op.
Thank you for leaving your two cents and thanks for watching this video!
Nitrome's game is great
I love nitrom’s games
Hey Austin! They definitely are great - Nitrome’s got some serious design chops!
Now i what to play bomb Chicken.
It’s awesome - cannot recommend it enough. Definitely should check it out, even at its current price point.

Also, where i can play this game?
Is it only on switch?
Absolutely, Antós! They kill it with simple yet effective design. Definitely my favorite mobile studio.
What song is used in this video? I know it's from kirby, but I can't find it anywhere
Hey Brage! It's Butter Building from Kirby's Epic Yarn - thanks for asking!
It's a remix of Butter Building, but I can't remember where it's from.
Hey Proto! It's not a remix, just an extended version of the piano of the song
Skip the Tutorial Aah, thanks! It's been ages since I played Epic Yarn, so my memory wasn't exactly serving me. Great video, by the way! It's always wonderful seeing Nitrome games get coverage.
Happy to help - glad you liked the video! Nitrome are some class acts
Good vid like your channel
Hey Dog Fish! Thanks so much for checking out the video - I’m glad you liked it!
Nitrome started at flash games not mobile games and they have a site full of games
Hey A144 - my point wasn’t that they explicitly started with mobile first - their flash games are great - but more so that it’s an important part of their game design history and a likely trace for these ideas
Thanks for the feedback on this!
You could play this with an Atari 2600
Oh geez - that would be quite the downscale 🤣 If Nitrome ports it over, I’d be more than happy to try it!
Sorry not you specifically but like you as in someone
Oh okay - I got you. That would be fun!
nice video
Hey thanks Qweba! I appreciate the support - thanks for checking out this one
I miss nitrome
Hey TPPP - thanks for checking this out. Are you not a fan of current Nitrome, because they’re still very much making games on the App Store
Skip the Tutorial oh no I mean I miss the flash games they used to make, they stopped making them and went to mobile. However, I am happy about the fact that they may create many more console games in the future. I love the video by the way
Haha okay got you - the flash games were certainly great!
I’m humbled you liked the video - thanks for taking the time to watch it 👍
"The company's mobile games roots"?!?!
More like leaves
Hey Dvir - thanks for pointing this out. I phrased it poorly, because I meant where it started before the console title making, not when it first started period (also, I’m more familiar with this period in their history for comparisons)
Instantly suscribred
Hey SBVCP - thank you so much for the support! Thrilled to have you as part of the community 👍 looking forward to seeing you around here
No, thank you! (And thank your tags, because i found you being suscribed to mark brown. Expect quite some more visibility if this does well)
Haha sounds good!
This is not a response its just a bomb chicken essay
Hey Tobias - that’s fair, but it is an essay exploring a concept Mark brought to my attention through his, so it might be labeled a response, or at least another talking point, in the discussion about dual purpose design as a whole.
Thanks for bringing this up! I appreciate your $0.02 on it
@@skipthetutorial sure im just used to responses that disagree with said video you kinda added to it wich is nice
Haha alright sweet. That’s typically the perspective I see in responses too, so I’m glad you found mine to contribute to the conversation 👍
Subbed!
Great! Glad to have you as part of the community, Minch 👍
Thanks man!
am i the only person who came in 2021?
No
I was here in 2023
aka every nitrome game also they made flash games first pleb
Hey Nathan! My mentioning of their “roots” wasn’t to mean where they first started, but rather that it’s a key part of their history. Their flash games demonstrate this design too - but I focused on the mobile history because of the parallels with Downwell.
Thanks for your two cents on this - good to hear from you!
wow it was a joke chill I like the vid
I figured - just laying it out there 👍 thanks for checking this one out
Nobody cares
