The tragic reality is that the *real* "Rose" (a white French woman named Juliette Laroche) actually *was* considered a "whore" at the time for the "crime" of marrying *a black man* (a rich Haitian man with a degree in engineering named Joseph Laroche) and having two biracial children (keep in mind the Titanic set sail in *1912,* and their kids were already 4 and 2 by then! They got married in pre-1910 France! Not sure about France's laws, but here in the US, segregation was still in place in most of the nation until post-1950)! And as you can probably guess, Joseph was "split" into the characters of Jack and Cal, with Cal given a bunch of godawful traits that Joseph never had!Joseph was not abusive, he actually *did* save her and their kids' lives, and his final act for his wife and kids was to *purposefully* put all the money and jewelry he had in his coat pockets and then *purposefully* put his coat on his wife moments before the lifeboat she was on was lowered - and yes, *this* was how he saved their lives! They were refusing to leave without him, so he lied and told them he'd made a deal with the guards and paid them off to get on a lifeboat, when he obviously had done no such thing and actually intended to give all his money to her and the kids! Anyway, the point is... I can't help but laugh *and cringe* at this line knowing the *actual* story! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Like, now that you know Jack/Cal are actually *the same person* in real life, this line is impossible not to laugh at!
Oh, and of course, Juliette Laroche was the name she took from her husband (she was Juliette Lafarge before). And yes, even after her husband died, she kept his name and remained Juliette Laroche for the rest of her life - she never remarried! When her first son was born (their kids were both daughters, and yes, she was actually *pregnant* with Joseph's third child *while* on the boat), she named him Joseph! 😭😭😭 Remember that name! Laroche! Juliette *Laroche!* And the movie tried to make you *forget* it, but now you know there *was* a man named Joseph Laroche, and that he saved his pregnant wife and his two biracial daughters! I can't even share his picture (on this comment)!

Rose took her power back in this scene. Not just of herself but her entire life. She was beyond done being manipulated, used for other people's benefit. She'd been a perfect little doll for so long and she was done with it. No one was going to tell her what her fate would be anymore. Maybe she would die, but at least it was on her terms and with someone who loved her. Rather than suffer and survive.

@@laaaaaau6687 Well, she owed it to Jack to try and save his life, since it was her foolish decision to bring him back to her cabin that allowed Cal the opportunity for the frame-up in the first place.
Kate said in an interview that Kathy (Molly) gave her the advice of: "This is the first and last time you see your mother" before shooting this scene. It helped Kate give the performance she did. It's the first time she sees her mother for who she truly is, and the last time she'll ever see her again.

I've always interpreted this scene as Rose realizing how heartless Cal really was, how little he valued life. This also came right after her mother was complaining about possibly having to share a boat with other classes and it being too crowded. She was overall disgusted.
Not to mention when she tells her mother that half the people on the ship are destined to die, Cal retorts "Not the better half." This shows even more how despicable Cal is.

@@joanna7350 I'm glad that scene didn't make it into the movie. It creates problems. First, in 1912 no one would have believed Rose over a man of Cal's stature and wealth. Women had no power back then. They couldn't even vote because their minds were seen as inferior to men. Cal would only scoff if Rose threatened to expose him, maybe even become violent. It wouldn't be the first time. Second, the alternate scene would have ruined the ending. Rose was still wearing the coat and Cal would've taken back the diamond.

I agree because all Ruth cares about is herself and the way she doesn’t like people with no wealth and cal is an assistant for Ruth just to get what she wants.

@@Musicienne-DAB1995 Eh not really, and if so an extremely small part. I actually used to think that too. She also didn't expect them to leave Jack to die. It was this scene that Rose finally realized that Cal not only set him up but signed his death warrant. If you think Rose did wrong by Jack, than this scene she redeems herself.
This is actually truly messed up by the writers once you hear the true story of the *real* "Rose" (a French woman named Juliette Laroche)! Simply put, the *real* "Rose's" mother had been *dead* for many years before she set foot on the Titanic, and her father never remarried! 😭😭😭 To make matters worse, when Juliette, her *husband* (Laroche was her husband's last name which she took, her maiden name and her father's last name were Lafargue) - a *black* Haitian man named Joseph - and their two *biracial* daughters boarded the boat to go back to Haiti (because despite Joseph having earned a degree in engineering from the University of Paris, employers were refusing to hire him/firing him, and they decided to return to Haiti - *that* was why they were on the boat), Juliette genuinely thought she would never see her father again and wrote him multiple heartbroken letters *from the ship!* 😭😭😭 And oh, her father actually *supported* her marriage and even helped raise his biracial granddaughters and *grandson* (yes, she was *pregnant* with Joseph's third child when on the Titanic) after the disaster (Juliette returned to France after the death of her husband on the Titanic), but she kept his last name and even named her newborn son *Joseph!* 😭😭😭😭 And oh, like her father, she never remarried! 😭😭😭 So yes, after learning the real story, this line feels *especially* messed up and wrong! 🤬🤬🤬 I can only imagine how Juliette's daughter Louise, who was still alive at the age of 87 when this movie came out, felt upon hearing the character based on her mom say this to her fictional "grandma" who never met because her actual grandmother died before she or any of her siblings were ever born. 😖😖😖
even without the evidence, this is the moment she realizes (or more like "remembers") the reason she despises Cal so much and the reason she loves Jack.

The beautiful thing about Cal's potrayal is that hes not "bad" in the sense that hes evil. He's just the polar opposite of Jack in every way and the script showcases that perfectly. I think even better than probably the best line of the movie “I’d rather be his whore than your wife” is Cals ego visibly crumbling across his face the second after she said it.
His ego was actively crumbling but he still had a large one. Bare in mind women didn’t say that kind of thing to men back then and obviously no one spoke down to him often. But for his young fiancé to say she preferred a “gutter rat” to him just broke him.

This is such a crucial moment for Rose because it’s the first time she realizes the depth of Cal and Ruth’s cruelty. Prior, she was still always miserable around them, but all she knew for sure was her life was incompatible with theirs. She wanted to escape them because she knew that she subjectively could get no joy from them, not because she actually thought they were bad people. It’s when the ship starts sinking that she truly realizes that they are evil. It’s not just her; they treat everyone this way, to the point where they don’t care about loss of life. Having a difficult personal relationship is one thing, but realizing that someone in your life is this indifferent to human suffering is another thing entirely.
From Ruth’s standpoint she wasn’t being cruel. She doesn’t want her daughter to become a social outcast and end up being homeless with a drifter, as likeable as Jack may be. Maybe only a parent could understand, they want their child to have the best of everything and to live with security. Ruth did not have the emotional awareness to see Rose’s true despair because as a mother, she was in survival mode. Their finances had been wiped out, so what you see as Ruth’s greed to marry Rose to the Hockley fortune, others see as someone who was in a panic to hold on to the only lifestyle they had ever known.
The one time you feel bad for Ruth. But whe Rose said “Goodbye, mother,” she meant it. I don’t think they had any contact after the whole ordeal. Love how they portrayed that. Ruth put too put on Rose and if this were real a therapist would tell Rose to go no contact with her mother unless she changed of course.
I felt bad for Ruth long before then, and no, Ruth didn't put too much on Rose's head. Her actions were perfectly understandable, even if she was a prejudiced woman.

She spent two days with him and it's a movie. In real life, if you spent two days with someone and started having these "deep" thoughts, you'll most likely be in trouble later.
It wasn't just his money...Cal wanted control over Rose in every way. She had to be obedient and make no mistake, this guy would be physically abusive.
Rose realize here that Cal never love her, when Cal said he regret not keeping the drawing, it would worth a lot more by morning. Cal plan to make profit of the drawing .... maybe selling it or something, this is when Rose realize he never value her. I mean you don't sell naked picture of your wife to be.
This moment and entire scene altogether is also reminder of what a great actress Kate Winslet was at the time, already at age 21. Not to forget, a reminder of her beauty. Although she was using dye, the red hair was amazing on her.

Lady Tremaine: (GASP) "Drizella, come along. DRIZELLA!"
Before anyone feels bad for Rose’s mother Ruth, you should know she left Trudy on the ship. Trudy was the woman who’s dress flys up the back as she slides down the deck as the ship starts going vertical. Trudy absolutely could have gotten into a lifeboat if Ruth had allowed her.

I know few are going to agree but how much more beautiful the story would have been if Jack survived and they made a life together after this ❤ I am imagining that ending of the story :)
The odds are, had Jack survived, they would have been dirt poor in NYC in 1912. Not an easy life. Jack, who is shown to be a gambler (winning his Titanic ticket in a poker game), may have likely gambled away whatever pennies he earned selling his art, or spent it on booze, while Rose worked 14 hour days doing manual labor. Given that she was young and attractive, she likely also would have resorted to prostitution to make ends meet. There was no welfare, no food stamps, no government assistance, no public housing -- if you were in poverty back then with no marketable skills, your existence was pretty bleak. The historical reality of their circumstances probably wouldn't be all that beautiful. If this was 2023, Rose probably would have gotten fed up with her broke-ass boyfriend pretty quickly.

Ruth was a real piece of work. Elitist, snobbish, callous, arrogant etc.. She cared more about money and living a life of luxury and comfort than her own daughter Rose’s well-being. That’s why she was forcing her to marry Cal even if it was going to be a loveless marriage where he treated her more like property rather than an actual wife/life partner. The guy had all the makings of an abuser. He wanted someone who he could completely control. If Rose was to be his wife, she was to be completely subservient to him in every way. That’s how he viewed her. Obviously Rose was not okay with any of that which is a huge reason why she chose to be with Jack. Jack treated her with respect, got to know her deep down, and brought out a side of her that she didn’t even know she had. Rose had every right to resent and hate her mother as it was clear that her mother saw her as nothing more than a ticket out of poverty. With all that being said, I can understand the mentality and attitude to ensure her and her daughter’s survival Ruth had as it was a reflection of what women had to do to survive during that time period. The 20th century was not a kind time period for women because during that time women were completely dependent on men for survival. Women didn’t have as many opportunities to make something of themselves then as they do now. Women didn’t have as many rights then as they do now. It was very much a “be seen and not heard” era for women even those who were wealthy and came from privileged backgrounds. Marrying a rich man back then ensured survival and a life of luxury and comfort. I don’t condone Ruth’s mentality and attitude in terms of using her own daughter for personal and financial gain so that she wouldn’t have to live in poverty, but I understand why she did it.
@@DeepScreenAnalysis You’re right. Women at that time married for survival as they did not have as many rights back then as they do now. Women during that time were completely dependent on men for survival especially those who were rich and wealthy like Ruth and Rose were (well at least until Ruth’s husband passed away and left them with nothing). In real life, Rose likely would have remained in her bubble of being rich and wealthy for the rest of her life so it’s not hard to imagine that she would have married someone like Cal instead of her rejecting the life of luxury and comfort just so she could be with someone like Jack. I know it’s just a movie, but in real life, someone like Jack likely never would have been able to charm a woman like Rose from a different societal class and convince her to be with him instead of someone like Cal.

Remember that name! Laroche! Juliette *Laroche!* And the movie tried to make you *forget* it, but now you know there *was* a man named Joseph Laroche, and that he saved his pregnant wife and his two biracial daughters! I can't even share his picture (on this comment)!

I've always interpreted this scene as Rose realizing how heartless Cal really was, how little he valued life. This also came right after her mother was complaining about possibly having to share a boat with other classes and it being too crowded. She was overall disgusted.

This is actually truly messed up by the writers once you hear the true story of the *real* "Rose" (a French woman named Juliette Laroche)! Simply put, the *real* "Rose's" mother had been *dead* for many years before she set foot on the Titanic, and her father never remarried! 😭😭😭
To make matters worse, when Juliette, her *husband* (Laroche was her husband's last name which she took, her maiden name and her father's last name were Lafargue) - a *black* Haitian man named Joseph - and their two *biracial* daughters boarded the boat to go back to Haiti (because despite Joseph having earned a degree in engineering from the University of Paris, employers were refusing to hire him/firing him, and they decided to return to Haiti - *that* was why they were on the boat), Juliette genuinely thought she would never see her father again and wrote him multiple heartbroken letters *from the ship!* 😭😭😭 And oh, her father actually *supported* her marriage and even helped raise his biracial granddaughters and *grandson* (yes, she was *pregnant* with Joseph's third child when on the Titanic) after the disaster (Juliette returned to France after the death of her husband on the Titanic), but she kept his last name and even named her newborn son *Joseph!* 😭😭😭😭 And oh, like her father, she never remarried! 😭😭😭
So yes, after learning the real story, this line feels *especially* messed up and wrong! 😖😖😖

She couldn't marry him, she couldn't give birth to heirs. rose was to wrong to leave them like that.
@@travisboutilier2220 Rose isn't a baby producing machine or some gold miner. She is just a 17 years old little girl who wants to live her life to the fullest. Ruth and Cal were pimps who were abusing her. Stop defending them unless you're one of them.
I wonder if Molly helped Ruth after the shipwreck; when Ruth faced other disasters.
Great film love this film more than anything
“I’d rather be his whore than your wife!” 😲 now that’s a burn to the bone!! Says a lot about how Cal really was all he wanted was wealth. Fantastic movie never ages! Or if it does, it just gets better with time! 😊❤
Cal wanted wealth, but he also wanted Rose's love. Because of his emotional deficiencies, he thought he could procure her love through gifts and money. By the time he realised this was futile, it was too late.
Rose REALLY wants Jack
Well she can't want, he is not worth it and he is not her fiancé, Cal is.
Rose’s mother & Cal should be a couple
Gross 🤢🤮
They deserve each other.
Ruth never cares about her daughter only for the money to survive of the lifestyle after her husband's passing leaving her and Rose nothing but the clothes on their back, facing of getting shunned out of society of the wealth that she ended up pleading towards her friends for the arranged marriage for Rose to marry for wealth and so Cal's parents offer her in this situation to have the wealth back for Rose to marry Cal for the union of wealth and status.
Rose knows where the necklace is. She just knew where these people hid it…
Cal is not the right and best Man for Rose. Rose is with Jack better together
Yes he is, Cal is the best man rose has. rose can't be with jack, he is not first class, he can't provide for her and he isn't engaged to her.
When she spit in Cal’s eye was the best scene he was like wtf she spat at me like a man 😂😂😂😂😂
Rose lifts Cal up “Consider this an Annulment.” Throws him off the boat, in the freezing waters, Suddenly out comes Jason Voorhees. (VII) Jason rips Cal’s Heart out
. Cal dies.
awesome video
Ruth was a bad mother for trying to make her daughter, Rose marry someone she doesn't love just for his money. She should be ashamed of herself.
No she wasn't, she was doing what was best for her. it's rose that should be ashamed for rebelling against her mother.
@@travisboutilier2220 She was too a bad mother for trying to make her daughter marry someone she doesn't love just for his money. Do you even hear yourself? It’s the moment she realize Cal planted the diamond in Jack’s “coat” and framed him. She realized no matter what she could do Cal was a selfish prick.
However, the plan of framing Jack backfired......
Awesome I love it
Looks like someone will be working as a seamstress after all…
I'd like to think that Cal looked after her. After all, they would have been family had he and Rose wed. For all he and Ruth knew, Rose had perished with the Titanic.
@@aronspidle138 I think Cal would have abandoned her, but Molly might have taken care of her. She might have become Molly's maid
@@aronspidle138 i don’t think that it would’ve been in Cal’s nature to care for her if there was nothing in it for him. With Rose gone, there would’ve been no point for him to keep Ruth around, as there was nothing to gain from that relationship. Besides they say that his family lost all their money later in the collapse of the market. Maybe madhatterster is right and Molly could’ve helped her out.
@@Astridlu26 Cal was significantly changed by the end of the sinking, though.
Ruth: "Do you want to see me working as a seamstress? Is that what you want? To see our fine things sold at auction? Our memories scattered?"
Me: "Let's see when you arrive in America....."
U unimaginable bastard...this line is my favourite ❤
You do wonder what happened to her mother after. Widowed, and daughter lost at sea, did she try to keep up her act with no money left?

@@thomasbrennan6303 To be fair, Jack Dawson did work his way through places. But his biggest problem was that he never had a set plan for his life. The film makes it seem as though this is the ideal, but as I have grown older, I prefer Cal's philosophy: "A real man makes his own luck."
@@Musicienne-DAB1995 Jack wasn’t a man, he was a boy. His dreamy “take life as it comes” approach to life is exciting to girls. However, grown women don’t find this exciting. It’s a massive turn off. Women want stability and security. Had Rose grown into a woman with Jack, she would have undoubtedly modified her attitude about him. Teen love rarely becomes a fairy tale, and women fall out of love much more easily than men.
Nice job implementing the song track from Tangled😂💀
Ruth was wicked woman and mother good on rose for walking out of her life
How was she wicked?
Good that Rose came to her senses and decided not to go through with marrying a very wealthy man that she wasn't in love with so that she & her mother wouldn't be poor anymore. Odd it hasn't been told what became of Rose's mother after she was rescued and taken to New York City.
I don 't understand how some stupid people with their respective comments, criticizing Rose for her right decision (defending Rose 's mother and Cal, unjustly).
People are not stupid, what rose is doing is disrespectfully running away from her mother and fiancé.

It seems like she was forcing rose to marry Cal because he was rich and had money she told her to stay away from Jack because he was poor and broke but rose knew in her who she really loved because Cal didn't love he was too mean and bossy but Jack was kind and gave her love but Cal gave her the heart of the ocean and that's not what rose wanted she wanted someone to love her for who she is and Rose knew they didn't but Jack did it's good that she didn't get on the boat because if she did go with them she will be miserable and feeling guilty about leaving Jack and not believing him.

The part where rose spots was unscripted. Apparently she was meant to prick him with a pin but she spat and it worked better.
It was discussed beforehand what she was going to do and that was Kate's suggestion and Cameron rolled with it

Well as long as your child is "your extension" you only feel sad that you lose the extension and worry how will you get another one.
Serves her right for not caring about her daughter's happiness.
I wish they told what happened to rose mom when they reached nyc or something like when they said happened to cal
I like how the photos Rose carried with her show that she did all the things her and Jack talked about. Always wondered although not really relevant, if Rose wouldve had any further contact with her mother over the years as well as what became of Ruth being that without Cal marrying her daughter Ruth had nothing

Roses fiancé is the WORST ONE EVER!!
Ruth did it because it was socially expected of her, to marry someone for love was not the mentality of the times.
