Jack is playing a white Knight whose role was to lift her out of the temporary slump from her domestic issues earlier in the movie. Once he fulfilled that role, she moved on and lived happily ever after. Some have argued it as unconcious vampiric exploitation of the poor (Jack) by the rich class (Rose).
The shot in 0:29 was one of the most powerful shots in the history of cinema. The fireworks above Jack while looking down at Rose was so powerful it'll make you cry. Pure perfection.

Everybody’s talking about the cinematography, the acting, the emotions and the visual details, but the most important thing that made this scene so emotional and impactful was the background music score. The moment the firework goes off with Jack’s face on the foreground and Rose realizing this might be the last time she ever sees him, the music amplifies and brings out the heartfelt emotions in you as a viewer so you feel what she feels. Truly breathtaking.

I agree! It's the best aspect of the movie, in my opinion. Yes, all of the other things are top notch, but the score gives it that emotional punch needed for it to work. No one else other than James Horner couldn't have done a better job and I'm glad he got the Oscars for Best Score and Best Song for this. He's my favorite musician/composer and it's such a shame that he died way before his time. I wished he got more recognition because there are lot of people that know his music, but not his name. It was because of him that My Heart Will Go On was written in the first place because James Cameron did not want a song in the film originally. But, he still did it anyway and it became a global hit. He definitely would've made a lot more beautiful music. He may be gone, but not forgotten 😞 RIP James Horner, 1953-2015

James Cameron stated that this was just plain luck; it was not possible to “sync” it because rockets can’t follow instructions. He loved the shot and he decided to keep it.
James Cameron said in the commentary that it was a perfect accident; it wasn't actually intended to be that way because they never new where those rockets would fly up, but it worked so well, that they kept it in the final cut (obviously).

I convince this film would make people tearful even after hundreds years later. Because it’s a story about love. Not only about Rose and Jack but also about all people who aboard the ship. Love between parents and children, husbands and wives. Love is a transcended value of human being. Such a greatest movie ever.

Cal is literally looking down his nose at Rose while Jack is just taking in as much Rose as he can, appreciating her.
Actually, Cal was feeling a similar sense of loss and grief at Rose's departure, only reduced by the fact that he expected to escape shortly afterwards.

@@michaelpatrick8347 How about Kate as Rose running frantically on the Promenade Deck to the back of the ship to try and commit suicide? There is even a deleted scene of Rose having a mental breakdown right before this one. Sad it wasn't included, for it really showed Kate's acting and talent and potential that was to be seen later much more often.

Even had Kate Winslet in tears, per her admission in a 1997 or 1998 interview, when she first saw the full and complete screening of Titanic. In fact, throughout the entire film up until that point she had herself in full composure, but made the admission, that this scene is where she eventually had to shed a tear.

What is heartbreaking and so beautiful about the movie is that his love for her was so pure and selfless that he didn't care if he wasn’t going to make it, his priority was to save her. For me, that's the most beautiful kind of love there is, when all you want from someone is nothing. A sweet nothing.
He never seemed worried that he wouldn't survive to live a life alongside her, and above all, he wanted Rose to be free, for her to live her life upon her will, he really wanted to change the perspective of that depressed girl who was about to jump the ship, he really showed her that there was a way out. He was free and he knew it, that's why he died for her, so that she could experience freedom, so she had a chance to feel alive before death.

And when Rose jumped from the boat back onto the ship, she realized that he was the most real thing, if not the only thing, that she had ever had and perhaps would ever have in her entire life. And at that very moment, she chose to spend as much time as she had, until the ship sank, by his side, since being with him was more valuable than life itself.

What's so heartbreaking is that the *real* "Jack" (i.e., a *black* Haitian man named Joseph Laroche) really did selflessly save his *wife* (a white French woman named Juliette Laroche, yes, they were in a biracial marriage *in 1912)* and their two biracial daughters and unborn son (whom she was pregnant with) by *actually* feigning a "deal" (he was a rich, *nonabusive* man) when they refused to leave without him - after he had (purposefully) placed his coat on her with all the money and jewels he had with him in the coat pockets (i.e., his final act as a father and husband was to leave all the possessions he had on him to his wife and children)! And this movie *name-calls* that moment by basically tell Juliette and her children (one of whom was actually *still alive* when this movie came out) "you never should've left him!"
And oh, why were they on the ship in the first place? They were going back to Haiti so Joseph could escape the discrimination he was facing in France! Joseph wasn't going to leave his family behind and was willing to continue to suffer that discrimination to be with his family, so Juliette made the ultimate sacrifice and left her family in France behind (she sent several heartbroken letters to her father *from* the Titanic because she thought she would never see him again - and oh, her beloved mother died at the age of 40 and her father never remarried! :'( ) so her husband could live a life free of discrimination!
It's heartbreaking that Louise Laroche (the daughter who was still alive when this movie came out) had to live to see herself and her parents (and even her grandparents) insulted so massively by moments like this and *several other* moments in this movie that essentially name-call her parents and/or their decisions!
With all due respect, true love is what Juliette *actually* did for Joseph! True love is what Joseph *actually* did to save his wife and kids! What we see here is *the complete opposite* of that - and it makes me so angry that the writers did this!

While Rose plays the role of those who remain, and live their lives honoring those who are gone
@Paula-kr2gj Sorry, but that perspective erases the blatant whitewashing in this movie. Because Jack's story also steals from nearly all the other minorities who were on the ship!
Yes, in addition to a black man, there were 8 Chinese sailors, and hundreds of Middle Eastern refugees on the ship - and their stories were *also* erased and the credit for them was given to Jack instead.
The Middle Eastern passengers were best known for having *three weddings* (yes, three separate couples *got married* on the ship - all Middle Eastern couples) and the lavish and exciting parties they threw (some in celebration of the marriages, and some just for fun) that they invited everyone - regardless of race or class - to join! In addition to the fact that Jack and Rose are shown "getting married" on the ship, the party Jack takes Rose to is based entirely on one of those Middle Eastern parties - specifically one that occurred after a wedding! Oh, and tragically, all three newlywed couples died in the sinking!
And the eight Chinese sailors have their own shocking and noteworthy story. For starters, all of them were men in third class, yet (despite a vast majority of men in third class dying), *6* of those sailors survived by using their knowledge of boats, water, evacuation procedures, and safety.
One famous story in particular was that of Bang Wang, who was the one who survived going down with the ship by using a detached door as a makeshift life raft! He not only survived, but was healthy enough to *help row* the lifeboat himself (which, despite being soaking wet, he did so *faster* than the inexperienced hired officers manning the boats), freeing up officers to tend to the medical needs of those they pulled out of the water *and* (because every second counted) likely saving a few more lives! Now, to be fair to the movie, that story *does* make an appearance in a *deleted* scene (before Rose is saved, a Chinese man balancing on a door is saved)! But again, that scene didn't even make the final edit!
Sorry, but Jack's story (and Rose's by proxy) represents a blatant attempt to whitewash and erase the memories of the people of color on the ship! There's no debate! Nearly every major story by the passengers of color made it into the movie, yet no actors or characters of color did! To pretend you don't see that that move was intentional is willful ignorance!

It’s so hard to explain what this movie was at the time of it’s release. People who missed it at that time, will never realize or experience anything like it. I was in 9th grade when this movie released. It was the movie of my father’s lifetime, so he said. It has been the movie of my lifetime so far. I am grateful to have lived in the time period that Titanic released.

I wanna say it’s a mixture of fear, disbelief, mild panic, and overwhelming feelings of affection. He knows *exactly* why she came back and it touched him. Mixed with the feelings that welled up in him when he thought he was seeing her for the last time, suddenly he’s been gifted more time.
I always got the feeling looking at that face that that is what intense love looks like.

What i find so astonishing about this scene is how they are literally twin flames cuz when she jumps from that boat and runs back to jack thats the same hallway she takes when she dies to meet up with him again. This movie is so symbolic
Rose's face is in light 2 times. Firstly, when she realized what a bastard is her fiance, when he said that he should have taken those drawing as its price would have increased by the morning. And second time (0:25) when she realizes that Jack won't have a boat to survive and it's the last time she sees him alive, so she jumps to stay with him. Light is understanding and realizing. Brilliant operator's decision. The greatest film ever.

A masterclass scene...Leo's performance is so underrated in this film. People go on about what a great actor he became but this role encapsulates his acting prowess abundantly. Kate is amazing as well, her classic beauty and nuance is magical and James Cameron brought out the best in everyone to bring this vision to life. Timeless.
Jack is the proletarian Prince Charming, the perfect gentleman, who rescues Rose from: social repression (bourgeoisie), filial repression (mother) and patriarchal repression (Cal). Rose is the proto-feminist archetype of what the 20th century woman will be. Old Rose novel her story like a fairy tale.

Yup and also the thing with the diamond everyone keeps complaining why Rose didn’t keep it. Because she didn’t want to reduce all the suffering of the people who died or the ones who lost their loved ones to a diamond. She wanted the Titanic to be remembered and honored for the people who died there not because of a stone.
Jack is a hybrid representation of their sacrifice and that of men and women who were sacrificed against their will by arrogant bureacrats with no foresight. There weren't enough boats or drills to keep the skills fresh. With how often boats sank in those days, the oversight is pitiful. No one should have died that night, not even the dogs.

My grandfather witnessed the tragedy of the titanic with his own eyes,but sadly never made it through.when the ship struck the iceberg he repeatedly yelled out warnings to those around him that the ship was going to sink,but everybody just ignored him.after his final warning,they finally kicked him out of the movie theatre

Everyone harps on this scene saying if Rose hadn’t jumped back onto the ship Jack could have lived (possible though no guarantees and he was supposed to die anyway but I digress)
Rose was stupid (even Jack called her out on it) but remember this girl nearly tried to commit suicide. She’s 17 years old still a naive and emotional teenager. And she formed an emotional attachment to Jack, after he gave her that much needed sense of choice in her destiny. She makes mistakes, has impulses, and is emotional, she’s a human character. I don’t always understand the backlash towards her and this film. There’s so many reasons I love this film and it is and always will be one of my all time favorites to this day. Just sharing thoughts.

This has always been the true turning point of the movie for me. This is where I absolutely lose it. I start sobbing here and throughout the rest AND for like 30 minutes after the movie ends.

When I was a kid , I was sick for 2 weeks and I watched titanic every single day , at least 3 times a day that I learned every line. After watching I used to draw the boat and try to reproduce the music on the piano.

I don’t think the movie would have been as impactful without “My Heart Will Go On” and I don’t think the song would have been as impactful without the movie. Both are Absolute masterpieces in their own right, but the two of them together just elevates both works to a higher level.

I dont care what everybody say, the way james Cameron directed this movie and the way it has shoot is just amazing plus the fact that leo and kate are such amazing actors.this is a great movie.

Watching this made me remember of a story from a survivor where she said she still remembers her father and her brothers watching her and her mother go down with the lifeboat at the railing. The sight of them still haunted her and her mother for life. It sure feels like in this scene. So heart wrenching 😢

@@AmethystEyes They were 13, 9, and 5 years old. The 5 years old one was her twin brother. As I recall from her story, they watched her, her mother, and her little brother (3 y.o) go down with the lifeboat at the railing. Her father was holding her twin bro and two older brothers were on each side of her father. If I'm not mistaken, she watched them go looking for another lifeboat for the 3 brothers but they couldn't get one because they eventually died on that ship.
She was also said that her mother never recovered from the incident and she never re-married.
One marvelous movie. Ahead of it's time. A timeless masterpiece. Acting, direction, cinematography and script all were synchronously beautiful and perfect.
I wonder what cameras, technology or techniques they were using cause video quality seems like it near peaked with this movie unless some can point to examples that were made before that didn’t have that retro old school look to them in the mid to early 90’s and everything prior. It has a modern crispness I’m not sure any other film had before. If another film that was made in with the exact same visual fidelity 20 years later most wouldn’t argue with it.

I like how the father and Jack are looking down with head down with tears and sadness whereas Cal is looking down with head high with superior mentality. A clear distinction of personality between people who love and who don't.

I mean, look how many father separated from his children and died alone that night, not to mention that most of those young girls lived orphans without a father
I've always looked at all three men, this is a very sad scene from many points of view. Cal also suffers. The other man suffers. Not to mention Jack. Heartbreaking. Women and children only...
I think this scene is so powerful precisely because it shows the bloody unfair separation.

They have portrayed her emotions soo well, in that moment where she knew she would never meet Jack again she dies 100 times in that moment, I feel that with her acting, they both did a commendable job

In the lyrics of Céline Dion's song, it is written: "Love was when I loved you". I don't know how some people see this, but I do know that love - true love - is rare and valuable. Something that happens, but that is as strong as anything felt for the first time - and perhaps unique. You don't have to think about the future when it comes to love, and when it's a love so intense it can't be lived beyond the present, the day that is today, the cold starry night that I know it was that night. The future is uncertain, but love is very clear when you feel it. And all grace is what flows naturally in those moments - including the smiles that escape and the looks that meet. No gaps for a "what if?" in memory. Surely I would have jumped too.
Even the way Jack and Cal looked at Rose as she was descending was different. Jack was actually looking at her, whereas Cal was looking down his nose at her. Little difference however still means a lot.

I am from a small town in India. That movie had released when I born. I watched Titanic at 8 or 9 years to me. Till now everytime I see this movie with same feel. I sing this every night in my dreams song whenever get a chance. ❤️..
This is by far the best move I’ve ever seen, the music, the scene, the emotion, is just everything, this tragedy, the trauma of the survivors, I just thought to myself, it’s not just a ship, it’s a memorable tragedy that is beautiful and famous at the same time.
