    I introduced my English teacher to Epic when we started our Odyssey section (she loved it and I bought a physical copy of The Odyssey to read all of it since we skipped over parts in our class reading). Our final project was to make a Wanted poster for an antagonist in The Odyssey (or Odysseus if we wanted to). That included drawing the character, writing down specific character traits that they are mentioned to have and then writing a paragraph as to why they’re important to The Odyssey.
    I chose Poseidon. Y’know the guy that didn’t show up at all and is only mentioned in the parts we read. My paragraph on why He was important was more of me trying to convince myself that he was even a character at all.
    I got a good grade on that project, but I don’t recommend copying my example.

    • @danitini14
      @danitini14 29 дней назад +17

      In fairness Poseidon does have an effect on the story, even if he never shows up "on stage" so to speak. I think that's a rather clever choice of antagonists 🙂

      I did a project for the Odyssey too. But instead of making a wanted poster, we were put in groups and make a board game. The class had to try and play it. I wish I found Epic sooner so I could have showed my teacher. ❤

    • @OhsweetOhno
      @OhsweetOhno 28 дней назад +3

      @@danitini14 yeah, my argument was ‘well Polyphemus calls for Poseidon to do all this bad shit to Odysseus and guess what happens? The same bad shit Polyphemus asks for-so Poseidon was clearly listening and therefore he is a character. Please do not make me redo this assignment I spent most of my time drawing Poseidon and cannot afford to get a bad grade on this.’
      I wish I had taken a picture of the paragraph I made, like I did the drawing of Poseidon, because it genuinely makes me laugh at how stubborn I was to make him a character just because he was in Epic and I for some reason just had to have that connection between both of my, then very intense, interests.

    When we studied The Odyssey in high school, I felt like such a boss because I was the only one who finished reading it.
    So, to study it, our teacher assigned an island or stop or saga for each of us. And we did a presentation on it for the whole class. I got assigned Polyphemus so that was fun. Anyway, because we didn't have enough students in class with how our teacher divided the topics, the presentations never reached Ithaca, I think. Or at least it never reached Odysseus returning to the castle.
    Fast forward to the end of the Odyssey, our teacher took over presenting the final topics and when she asked what the final challenge Penelope posed for Odysseus to prove that he was in fact Odysseus, I kid you not, no one raised their hands.
    I knew the answer, so I slowly raised my hand. Teacher saw and she did acknowledge me, but she wanted to check one more if anyone else had finished the Odyssey.
    She even gave a clue that the final test involved a bed and, predictably, several giggles broke out.
    When she finally called me to share what happened in the end, I felt like such a boss.
    Long story short, read the Odyssey. It's Epic.

    while i did listen to epic first, reading the story after (for school) definitely was fun because i did recognize where they were different and the same! it definitely gave me more of a love for both!!
    and i love how you’re pointing this out 😭

    We're actually studying the Odyssey right now! The other day,the teacher wanted to verify that everyone has read the material,so she was asking us one by one about certain parts. I had to explain the part with the Cyclops,(Yeah,I checked out the material just in case,so I didn't mention the winions and all that stuff.)It was super easy and fun,and I started talking about Odysseus,his plan,his mistake and the impact in the story. I got a bit excited and I even started mimicking Odysseus revealing his name to the Polyphemus. The teacher was like "Wow,you really *love* the Odyssey, don't you? 10/10!" I would have passed either way,but only a musical can get me to speak as passionately about something.

    Good thing you mentioned this, cause Odysseus slept with like.... 3 women in the original poem, he had no loyalty, just love and lust. Circe he slept with for a year, but Calypso is complicated.

    I’m so glad you mentioned this! I actually started to read the Trojan cycle and was curious to see the differences between epic and the odyssey! There are certainly many (you make Circe infinitely more likable). Kiddos in class, go read the Odyssey. Epic will lowkey hit harder (I sobbed during the gathering of shades)

    I had my high school Odyssey experience before I even discovered EPIC, and I honestly think that made it even more fun. The delight I felt when finding out that in this version, Odysseus DIDN'T cheat on Penelope with Circe cannot even be described, and it's really fun watching what Jay decided to change and to keep from the original.
    For school, I only had to read an abridged version, and EPIC is really making me want to read the whole thing in full.

    I'm working on becoming an English teacher, and if I get placed as a Freshman teacher and have to teach the Odyssey, I'm going to make it an assignment to watch modern adaptations of the Odyssey (there are a lot), and I'm definitely going to include Epic and have them pick out comparisons! I had to read the Odyssey as a student, and I remember finding comparisons being one of my favorite things, so I feel like having music that sort of corresponds to certain events, even if it's not completely accurate and like you said, you took those creative liberties (as you should/can; it's not like the Greeks weren't already doing that), will help students connect, especially when these songs are so fun.

    I literally *just* had this same conversation with my younger sisters about Epic and The Odyssey last night! So funny that you have now mentioned it too!
    Also, yes! Absolutely read The Odyssey! I loved reading it in school and would have loved having Epic to supplement my reading and to had our teachers lead discussions on why certain liberties may or may not have been taken and why we create art like adaptations of iconic pieces.
    This is just some of these reasons why I'm really excited for Epic and it's impact on the world of creative arts!
