LYRICS
I dug a hole and filled it up with compost
Rested on the cool grass for a minute
I saw the future in a dream last night
There's nothing in it
I set the sapling in the hole
Started gently tamping down the dirt
I saw the future in a dream last night
Somebody's gonna get hurt, somebody's gonna get hurt
I hope it's not me
But I suspect it's going to have to be
I dug my heels in for the winter
And I waited for the snow
But something was stuck up in the clouds
Something was stuck up there
It couldn't let go
And when its time came I could see it happen
Blossoms black and sweet as Texas crude
I saw the future flowering like a ruptured vessel
Somebody's gonna get screwed
It won't be me
Someday I am going to walk out of here free

"somebody's gonna get screwed
it won't be me.
someday I am going to walk out of here free."
..could be the most inspiring song lyric, presented here in the most convincing way, that I have ever seen.
John Darnielle is one of the greatest musicians of our time. Period. End of story.
Hearing the 2008 one so many times makes this 2021 version so much more gorgeous somehow. I'm glad to be here and more glad to see this song still being played.
i just lied so much oh my god I've never heard this song in my life

my favorite band.. ❤️ from India
You played this in Asheville tonight and a lot of us cried in a really good way. Thx guys
I was at that show!
One of my fondest memories is seeing this in played in Denver
Immediate tears
These Jordan lake session versions of songs with the Saxophone are just divine. Really can't get enough of them.
truly sublime. absolutely unrivaled. nothing parallels. so much emotion. the talent. no words.
I never thought there could be a more perfect song than the original recording of this song. Until I heard this version...
one of my favorites. thanks yall
I bought this volume of the Jordan lake session and then it slipped my mind for a while. Man is this an amazing version of the song. Sad I was missing out for several months on this one and others.
This is so freeekin’ good!
Wow. Such a beautiful a version of this.
Someday
I stole John Darnielle's beer after he set it down on stage a few years ago at Asbury Hall and I still feel so bad about it.
They for some reason gave me the "over 21 years old" wrist band without checking my ID at the venue(I was only 20) and I unfortunately got black out drunk and basically can't remeber the show at. All I remeber is that he opened up with "Woke Up New"
Sorry that I stole your beer Johnny boy and I'm even more sorry I basically missed the show. Your music has been such a positive force of light for so many years now and I want to thank you for sharing it with us all. It's one of the most important and defining things that helped shape me into the person I am today.
Some things are best unshared, friend.
@@gentryaustin not when you're a John darnielle stalker!
Hope you’re in recovery, bru.
