Dude, you're hitting everything you need to from your interpretation. That's the beauty of music and especially Tool. You are free to interpret this as you choose. The crazy thing is I first heard this album when it came out when I was 18 and now, at 40, I hear it in such a different way than I did as a youth. That's how this music grows with you and changes as you do and how you hear it changes. That's why this is my favorite album of all time. It has changed its meaning to me as a man than as it did when I was a kid. I appreciate your reaction. Cheers!
Here's a brief rundown of how Tool writes songs. The instrumentalists, Adam Jones - Guitar, Justin Chancellor - Bass and Danny Carey - Drums do the compositions and once completed, Maynard - vocals, writes the lyrics based on how the music makes hits him. The final products have been hailed as masterpieces by fans and critics alike. This is a pretty unique way of putting a song together in that most artists/bands kind of do the whole thing at once or the music comes after the lyrics are written. Very deep band anchored by one of the best drummers alive.
You are absolutely correct that's how tool does it it kind of reminds me of what Keith Richards said the Rolling Stones write the music to turn on Mick Jagger and then Mick Jagger turns on the world
In the song Lateralus, Maynard James Keenan sings the lyrics in such a way that the number of syllables in the lines fits into the Fibonacci sequence (the Fibonacci series is such that each of its terms is equal to the sum of the previous two). First it rises to the sixth step, then falls to the first, then up to the seventh and back down to the fourth: (1) black, (1) then (2) white are (3) all I see, (5) in my infancy, (8) red and yellow then came to be, (5) reaching out to me (3) let me see. (2) There is, (1) so (1) much (2) more and (3) beckons me (5) to look through to these, (8) infinite possibilities. (13) As below so above and beyond I imagine, (8) drawn outside the lines of reason. (5) Push the envelope. (3) Watch it bend.
This song is written in math. It's the kind of masterpiece an artist could only dream of achieving in their lifetime. Yet Tool has a handful of masterpieces. Such amazing talent.
This is a great reaction! Lyrics are another instrument in this band. Can’t wait to see more. Radiohead is another journey up there with Tool. Especially their last few albums.
Now you'll get it when us Tool fans say "spiral out," it's almost the anthem for the band. I started this journey in 1993, I envy you for being able to listen to it for the first time. I suggest Eulogy, 46 & 2, The Pot, The Grudge and also the song "Judith" by A Perfect Circle, which is one of Maynard's side projects. Well worth a listen and this is a rabbit hole you're gonna love. Spiral Out
The band is just freaking amazing man I love rock hip hop rap and everything basically if it sounds good but this is like something different it's almost like a hybrid of rush....
If you like the picture of the album cover you’d really lose your mind with the actual album, the pages flip deeper into the body with each page. The syllables of the lyrics of this song follow the Fibonacci sequence which is a series of numbers that when graphed create a spiral. The number sequence is created by adding the two numbers before so for example ; 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21 etc. In the song for example black (1) and (1) white are (2) all I see (3) in my infancy(5) red and yellow then came to be (8) etc etc. You should react to a song from Tools newest album Invincible or Pnuma or the song Sober from their older stuff.
Alex Grey is the album artist. Check out his chapel of sacred mirrors. Like Tool, the more you experience Alex Greys art and the more you understand the symbolism and intention the more you will understand about life. Also if you like Maynards voice, check out A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer his other bands. I would also suggest my other favorite male vocalist Mike Patton, of Faith no More. I would love to see you do anreaction to “the Real Thing” from 1989. faith no more fired their mediocre punk singer, hired an 18 yr old kid who wrote the whole album in 6 months and won a grammy.
First time viewer here. Great reaction. Yes, I'm late, but my only advice to you is the same I have for all the RUclips reaction channels with a mostly hip hop background: Stop focusing on the lyrics so much. This is a different artform altogether. The moods that are created from the instruments combining and the pace they play at is just as important, if not more so. Rock/metal is a sonic genre first and foremost. It's not a message-centric genre the way hip hop and country music tend to be. The actual 'music' the musicians are creating in support of one another is arguably more important than the lyrics are in the realm of rock & metal. This can be a little daunting for first time metal listeners who've grown up evaluating music one particular way their entire lives, but once you understand this, it'll change the way you experience music altogether.
Thanks. I appreciate the tips. Sonically, I’m really digging tool. Although I really do enjoy the lyrics I’ll take into consideration when I’m listening and make sure to listen to it as a whole to catch the mood of the song.
You should definitely look more into the song. If no one's already said it in the comments, this whole song is based on the mathematical sequence called the Fibonacci sequence which is a reoccurring phenomena in nature and in everything we see. For real I hope you look into it!
Good time hangin with ya bro!!! Maynards a DEEP Dude :) He has had a Torn experience with life/god.... his whole life :( sent ya a home recipe on ur FB page, yummy lol hopefully we can do pmz on there ;) Peace D :)

You are listening to tool in exactly the right way. It is artistic brain food.
I read that as "autistic brain food" and it wasn't wrong either way.
@@GrimrDirge as someone who is autistic, Tool's music scratches my brain in a very pleasing way

That’s crazy! Thanks for the background. I didn’t know he was writing to that level of detail.

Alex Grey is the Artist for the album cover.
I'd love to see some Adi art for an album. Even a Grey Adi collab would be TOPS.
Tool, isn’t a listening experience, it’s a journey through time, space and dimensions!
I DO wanna listen to some more TOOL! Thanks for the videos.
Also: Adam Jones is the guitarist. excuse me, "The" guitarist! His solo stuff is gorgeous:

subbed for the Tool. keep going. the rabbit hole is deep and profound.
Parabol - parabola . Is must by tool . You have to do them both at the same time . Good reaction mate
It’s up on my channel. I filmed in 2 videos
Tool, Radiohead, Kendrick. The holy trinity of technical artists.
This gentleman is going on a journey. Welcome to the realms. .
Awesome reaction to one of the best songs of all time. Loved it!
Glad I’m here early in your Tool journey. I’ll be here for every reaction 👊. Their entire discography is amazing man - can’t go wrong.
Right on brotha. I’m really digging it so far. Discovering some good music with meaning behind it
Album art is Alex Grey he's phenomenal brilliant anatomical art

I think one song you’ll enjoy is Bottom By Tool its a little more slept on than the other popular songs but it’s still one of the bands best songs
Bottom is a banger. That whole album is 🔥
I think Bottom, Undertow, and Flood are my top 3 off that album. But absolutely the entire album is amazing.
Very awesome you suggested bottom that is very awesome one and sadly not appreciated enough
@@SpanishGoddessDiamond it really is a hidden gem in tools discography

3:10 hell yeah, turn that shit up 😎
Haha. Hell yea
Yes Maynard writes his own stuff
The same singer has a band called Puscifer, who has a song called “Balls to the Wall”. Maynard is amazing
The album artist is Alex Grey

The song is a fibbonacci sequence if you count the syllables of each line it swings in and out on the spiral. Kinda genius
Alex Grey is the artist, TOOL is amazing!
Best part about Tool is they always subvert your expectations...
You think now the bass drops. But nope.
You don’t need suggestions. Just pick a Tool song, any album, and enjoy. Thanks for your reactions.
Right on. More to come. Loving the music so far

If you still need any suggestions, definitely The Deftones - The Passenger or Tool - Invincible.

Tool is all about the third eye. Most of their artwork has eyes in them.
Ah ha. I see. That makes sense. I feel like I need to go deeper
