I have spent all weekend viewing the utube clips over and over , have definitely fallen in love with Lena and am truly heartbroken by what happened to her , it is time this fabulous talent was better recognised , and she should be remembered for her talent and inspired performances , not her illness.
Agree 1,000% I simply could not take my eyes off Lena during this performance. She really got the 30's feeling perfect!!! Her gestures, her voice, what an incredible talent. I too am falling in love with Lena. May she rest in peace. Heaven must have a beautiful choir!!! Wayne in Texas.
again Lena proving what a class act , absolutely perfect, What a talent , sadly missed, when given the right material this lady shone with the brightness of a million stars a unique talent , I think I have fallen in love with her xxx RIP Lena forever in my heart xxx
This is my most favorite version of this song. Something in the expression make me believe that if we believe in her, a papermoon will be more than a papermoon :)
From the costume to the gestures, and of course, a clear, expressive performance, a first class performance of a terrific tune. Thanks for posting this.
This seems to be '1920's ish and poking gentle fun at a bygone age, beautifully done, and with so much expression too... Lena was a 'wee Scot's lassie' with a huge heart and fabulous cheek grin... R.I.P Lena.. Glad Lena's songs are on here to enjoy :0)x
She won an early version of an American Idol type show when she was 11 and went on to a very successful career as a recording artist and host of her own show on the BBC. She died in 1999 from a combination of pneumonia, anorexia ans depression.
Nicely done and sung just wonderng if she lived in that era i think she would have been a long succes on 1930/40s usa radio she would have been happy and lived a long life. anyways you never know for sure...
@dancebandleader I suppose you could say she never performed in the USA, but you would have to discount the following performances: Tonight Show with Johnny Carson The Cher Show The Mike Douglas Show The Carol Burnett Show The Merv Griffin show The Jerry Lewis Telethon The White House for President Ford Oh, and appearing in Hollywood with Sinatra and Minnelli.
This makes me smile. Another song Lena made her own. I love Lena so much. The Ella Fitzgerald version is nice also. Two different styles, both charming.
This is great. What some of the commentors need to realize is that the song itself is supposed to be exaggerated. So go watch something else and leave her alone. K?
Pure talent Lena zavronie. As u will find .as we no Lena ending was sad .. But please have a heart and help Lena zavronie . THE OFFICIAL LENA ZAVORONI FAN CLUB and of corse Lena zavoroni web site. It's free thire nice poeple on thire ..let's help keep the memory of a 4 gotten angel alive... Lena zavronie hearty she gave ..hope the public show thirs
I never feel a thing is real When I'm away from you Out of your embrace The world's a temporary parking place Mmm, mm, mm, mm A bubble for a minute Mmm, mm, mm, mm You smile, the bubble has a rainbow in it Say, its only a paper moon Sailing over a cardboard sea But it wouldn't be make-believe If you believed in me Yes, it's only a canvas sky Hanging over a muslin tree But it wouldn't be make-believe If you believed in me Without your love It's a honky-tonk parade Without your love It's a melody played in a penny arcade It's a Barnum and Bailey world Just as phony as it can be But it wouldn't be make-believe If you believed in me
I have to confess I had never heard of her until now. Apparently she never performed here in the USA> Great voice nice personality. Where we part company musically is in some of the rock ballads she did later. Although her perfomances can't be faulted, the tunes are essentially shallow and perfomed with an emotional force that is not needed. The results on those tunes were strictly "over the top".
@cynthiacher No matter what the dramatic use of this song or any song, the song is a respite, an uplifting moment of joi de vivre. Allow anyone to sing it at any time without being creeped out.
A rather rare successful attempt at capturing the cutesy spunk of the 1930's. Actually her voice is a little closer to 50's style, but she pulled off the mannerisms to a T. I've yet to see anybody do a convincing 1930's gal. They were all over the screen from lead actress to chorus girl, being adorably innocent all the way to adorably brassy. What a special time that was. I can't go a month without watching Ginger Rogers sing ' we're in the money' in Gold Diggers 1933. How bout that Ruby Keeler?
@thatlovelydayy actually she died of an infection three weeks following a rumoured leucotomy which is a form of lobotomy to help with her crippling depression. Try a google or wiki search

I wish I could have met Lena. She seems to have been such a lovely down-to-earth person. Dawn xx
Unmatched Charm and Charisma.
Very reminiscent of Marilyn Miller here.
Very nice singing--and so very sweet--Lena's personality shines brightly through.
Supercute, I love Lena so much! :)))
I'm in love with her warming smile... :)
This is amazing. Flawless. She was great.

I never feel a thing is real
When I'm away from you
Out of your embrace
The world's a temporary parking place
Mmm, mm, mm, mm
A bubble for a minute
Mmm, mm, mm, mm
You smile, the bubble has a rainbow in it
Say, its only a paper moon
Sailing over a cardboard sea
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me
Yes, it's only a canvas sky
Hanging over a muslin tree
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me
Without your love
It's a honky-tonk parade
Without your love
It's a melody played in a penny arcade
It's a Barnum and Bailey world
Just as phony as it can be
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me
I was first aware of when Vivien Leigh sang it in "A Streetcar Named Desire!" film by Tennessee Williams.
Broadway is calling us !!
Streetcar named Desire!!!!

How did we destroy all that we once had?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA that was great : )
That's fine. Only people with no common sense don't like the old songs.
I wonder what her career would have been, what she would have done if she hadn’t got ill

@COMMOGSE She died, i believe, of an infection following a lobotomy to try and help with her depression.
That conductor looks like Peter Glaze from Crackerjack!

Died of anorexia in 1999 at 32 kilos.
isn't spectacular?
Have you seen Going Nowhere? She sang it the same year. And if that isn't her most spectacular performance i don't know what is.
Totallt agree, Going Nowhere was her benchmark piece. Outstanding masterpiece.
Didn't know they had color TV in the 1930s.
They had color film not color tv
Lena Z must have been way too intelligent for the people in her life.
Yo dat sh*t a jojolion reference
