The Dodge Viper has always had a sketchy reputation and is definitely not the sports car for the unexperienced gearhead. The Viper might be scary, but @throtl decided to take it to the next level. They were challenged by Motortrend and Dodge's Roadkill nights event to swap a 1000HP Hellcat Redeye engine into the cheapest Dodge Viper in the country - then race it a month later. The guys at Throtl proved to the world that sometimes the old V10 in this 2001 Viper isn't always the answer. The Hellcat Redeye engine in this car is unlike anything I've ever felt - and is not for the weak. So let's go on one wild ride in Throtl's INSANE Hellcat Redeye Dodge Viper. Huge thanks to Throtl for making this possible!

Yeah this was uh....delightful.
I'm so glad they at least kept it manual!
"This was never supposed to be this way!" 🤣
Question: IS there even enough space in the pedal box to fit 3 pedals properly if you custom-mounted them, or is it the right move with these older vipers to swap a ZF-8HP in them?
@ThatDudeInBlue plz give the v10 the redemption it deserves- review my stock motor twin turbo v10 next time you’re in Brevard County FL.. Made 907 whp/ 1013 wtq on dyno (turned down a little to live). Fun t56 car- hope to change your mind! These guys had a “cream puff” aka non forged v10

It must be the headers but this car has had such a unique sound since day one. I've never heard another hellcat or Mopar in general sound like that. It almost has the tone of a V10 on top of the V8 growl
I'm 90% sure it's because this doesn't have a crossover. Also, the headers might not have equal-length runners, which, oddly enough could potentially be IDEAL for a cross-plane V8 since it would mimic the scavenging of a flat-plane if you do it right. At least according to David Vizard.
It's a very unique sound.
It reminds me of older v8'S
It sounds a lot more like its predecessor, the Shelby Cobra.
Extremely unique sound
I think I'd still prefer the v10 with mods, but this is sick
If presented the option, I'd be torn. Then again, I'd be happy to settle for a dart.
@@taylorjams4845 what year🤔
V10 + cam = yessss
I'd be inclined to go with the 8.0L V10 as well, but it'd have to have a big cam, complete valvetrain upgrades, long tube headers, a full 3" dual exhaust, and a supercharger. It doesn't need twin turbos to run 9s or 10s, it can do that with a centrifugal supercharger on higher boost (15-18 psi) and easily make 800-900 whp. I've never been much for originality, but the V10 is what makes the Viper so much fun. For Throtl it was more about what's easier and the quickest to get us on the strip, so with their sponsorship from Dodge they used it to get a Hellcat Redeye engine and went to town. Me, I would've put a turbo on the V10 as long as it wasn't completely locked up or worn out.
The uneven firing 8.3-8.4 liter v10 with some camshaft is music to the ears 👂🏼 I love it ❤
If Final Destination was a project build.
I have no idea how anyone could be mad at this swap, truly insane
LS swapping would have been sacrilegious since it's the competitor. This is just flat-out badass.
I feel that way when people LS swap mustangs as well.
@@viperkill3 This is one of those scenarios where downsizing wound up making the car more visceral. Those first-fourth gen vipers are some of the scariest cars you can ride in STOCK. Now dropping a tuned redeye engine in it which is extremely explosive in power? As I stated in a previous comment, this is no longer a viper. This is now a black mamba.
@@dannyllerenatv8635 yeah a gen 2 coupe is my dream car. Unfortunately I don't have any space for one.
Who tf ls swaps a viper
@@thehairylarry People LS swap anything. I've even seen people LS swap Ferraris and Lamborghinis.
If the Miata is the most engine-swapped car, the Viper is probably the least, because this is the first time I've seen one, ever. I don't count the super rare supercars like the Ferrari F40, since they're, well... rare. You don't plunk down a million plus just to toss the motor like it's garbage. lol
It’s because vipers especially older ones had beasts of engines lol hard to replace with something better
Bc all you need to do is add twin spoolies to the v10 and you’re a demon
I’m supper impress that it spun every gear on a track with massive slicks like it did and how well you controlled it
@@altimgamr some people just can't stomach it
100% of us would crash this 😂
The thing with hellcat swapping a viper is removing a dodge engineering masterpiece and replacing it with another dodge masterpiece. Vipers were meant to make high power and to hellcat swap it just feels right
That pull around the 6:30 mark, is the roof trying to fly off?!?! 👀
The first era vipers the tops were pretty much an afterthought. lol
@@ThatDudeinBlue oh boy, just extra sketchy for your pleasure lol
Just fast and furious targa top it when it flies off
I own a 2000 RT/10 (second gen), above 120mph the cloth top will start to shake violently lol.
That looked scary! Challenger Redeyes are hard enough to keep control of, I couldn't imagine it in a Viper!
I think it’s cool. I just think the Viper nameplate and that engine go hand in hand. Like Supra and 2J, Skyline and RB, Evo and 4G; the Viper’s v10 is as engrained as its various snake logos. Sure one could swap any of the aforementioned platforms with another engine from the same manufacturer, but I would have the same feeling about it.
That exhaust gives it a very unique tone, I love it!!!
I remember this car. I have one thought if I were to drive it… NOPE! Not doing that. Scary AF lol nice job David
Wow I own this car bone stock. Something to consider if your engine goes. Interior is called Cognac. Love my V10. Great video!
Vipers with V8s are amazing. The Zakspeed Viper was too good!
I’ve been waiting for these Throtl reviews!
Very glad you mentioned your Magnum and that you'll hopefully be repairing it soon. I'm in the process of finding a Magnum to build for myself. Any suggestions, thoughts or tips?
I do love your Viper reviews.
Bro that thing sounds dirty! I like it!
Jesus Christ what a ride!!! Sounds amazing too
Thats insane, love it!!
Sheeesh. This is the earliest i've ever been. Sick review.
It's a very unique build that's for sure. Is it sacreligious? Very, but still a bit cool I can't lie.
Nah, LS swapping would be sacrilegious, especially if it's the 5.3 truck engine. This is at least still Mopar.
What a driver, good shit on keeping it going! That was awesome
Actually one of my fav RUclips cars 😊
Nasty sound, bet it sounds like heaven in person
when he said he was tired from doing the pulls i felt it Lol I get that sometimes when out slaying the streets in the bike
“The one in 2001 is basically ancient”
Thanks for that
The cognac interior is the best part! 👏
The worst imo
Has a unique sound for sure
David I always love your content man I have been watching you since 2014 when I got my first mustang which was an 02 GT, I unfortunately had to sell my 2013 mustang gt in December for a new job however, because of my new job and income I plan on getting a 2020 gt500 within the next week. Keep up the great work. You and Forza Horizon 2 made me a car guy.
That looks insane. I HAVE TOO GIVE THAT VIPER A RUN
Watched the build of this car. Bad ass!
Sounds so so good
They should have named it "Midwest Stripper" because it's voluptuous and loves to girate and shake that backend going down the track 😂
AKA "Big Booty Judy"
That thing is gnarly!
nah taking out the V10 is wild 💀 criminal even
Absolutely perfect! ❤❤.
Hot rodding at it's finest. As long as the owner likes it & has fun I'm down. Would I do it differently yeah probably but it's still badass 🤙
Pretty sick swap remember watching it when they first started and was like..um maybe
Lol I can't believe how hard it was for you to keep that thing in a straight line... Amazing.. I used to think I wanted one of those
That is a dream machine right there! 😄👍Luckyyyyy!
I always wanted to see a V8 Viper to be honest, it's closer to the concept of the 427 Cobra it was meant to be a modern version of, and I always preferred the sound of a good V8 over a V10.
I fully agree with the cobra part you said! V8s do make some beautiful sounds but V10s can too like the viper LFA and Carerra GT.
@@dsmith383 Yeah those two are undoubtedly my favorite V10's, but they are two very special elusive cars.
Great build just need some fine tuning to be a great track car suspension wise that is
I remember Ralph Gilles once saying that the reason they don't make a V8 Viper is the Hemi is physically too wide to fit between the shock towers. The V10, much like the LS, is surprisingly narrow due to the conventional wedge heads. But anyway, it sounds like either that was an excuse, or Throtl had to seriously Boss-429 the shock towers to make it fit.
I think this thing is sick.
Definitely a car that is pure hands on experience without any assists. Definitely not as you experienced for the average driver to track or mess around on the street.
That V8 is knarly.
Hennessy has coaxed some crazy #s from the V10 over the years. One build I read about was like 2000hp before the NOS. The owner said he was flat out scared use the nitrous. That said, the Hellcat is cool, but it does seem like sacrilege with 2 fewer cylinders. What we need is a madman with the time, money and skill to weld 2 Hellcat blocks together...
There ya go that's more of a viper mentality 🤣
I wish Dodge had gone through with a prototype " hellcat" viper before its end. They were testing a supercharged version of the V10 before the plug was pulled. Now we know why. The Red Eye was just so much more efficient for the money and Dodge didn't need to spend more money on tooling when they already had everything and customers willing to pay over viper prices for a cheaper car to build.
this is dope but, V10s are just awesome man.
The swap I didn't know I needed.
Man that Redeye swap Viper is a freakn beast.
I really couldn't tell what was going on? Should have some airail footage. I believe it was a wild ride!!! Viper fun!!!
I wonder what happens if you put the supercharger on the V10...
It would’ve been cool to see a supercharged Viper V10 in there. The Redeye makes the most sense though. Cool car.
Good Grief Im Early.
Winner winner!
I’ve been watching you for a few years and never knew you lived in Georgia for some reason, when I boost my 5.0 I’m going to need to get you to drive it😂
OMG I absolutely love this car 😘
That exhaust note was God tier
Hellcat viper vs LS swapped S2000 that you did years back. Whats higher on the pucker scale? Ricky does a great job behind the wheel of that monster
Doesn’t sound like a hellcat very much which is cool. I’d much rather the v10 in this car though.
Holy shit, she´s a handful! Now i can fully appreciate that ridiculous looking tire.
Impressive rodeo, my dude! 😁👍
Wow this looks like a handful!!! She is a rowdy girl
* I don’t get why people are freakin out over the engine swap, it’s an old slow heavy v10 that couldn’t barely compete with most 4cylinders out now days - no one ever does stuff like this so it’s really cool to see this modern day swap on this sweet old chassis. It’s not like they cut it up and destroyed it, it’s in fantastic freakin shape too
wild
The Sad Part about Roadkill Nights was that there were so many blown clutches. All these great Cars but they were limited because of Clutch Issues . I loved this car !!!
Awesome👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Also that roof is all but flying away! lol
Pedals definitely very close together. Same in my NSX. You really have to choose your shoes when driving
Amazing build… but also confirms my Traction > Power philosophy to car funnery.
Fire
What shifter stick is that? It looks like a sequential shifter but not sure.
7:08 was way too funny for no reason 💀💀
As a Gen2 owner, the best mod I made was swapping to a torsen dif. All the scariness went away and totally controllable under full acceleration or in a drift. I wonder if they touched the rear dif?
Very cool! Is it a Torsen type 1 or type 2?
@@Planetary13 That is a good question and off the top of my head I don't remember. I believe Type 1 but I am not positive. Dan Cragin in SoCal did the install. I will see if the invoice specifies it.
I just went to a spool in mine
It’s good to know when enough is enough 😂🤘
Good budget swap if you can't afford to take advantage of the v10 platform I guess, kinda seems pointless when you could just have a charger or challenger without the added cost of viper specific stuff and having to do the fab work but I understand doing something for the fun of it.
Absolutely awesome, I so deserve to drive it 🤣
Manual hellcat sounds dang good
I wonder if a pedal box would help with foot placement?
It has a pedal box from the factory
Definitely love the hellcat engine in this. It makes it a authentic experience and a drivers car. No for the weak of heart.
Best version viper!!
well the prototype vipers did have a hemi in them. as well as V8's
it was supposed to be the replacement for the AC cobra
Needs a 426 stroker and twins with that blower 😆
I prefer the v10 but it's nice. I want to know what was your best time?
I wonder if it improved the weight distribution?
Had this idea when the hellcat first came out.
It’s a sweet build for sure, but I’d definitely keep the V10
Honestly, the exhaust on the stock Viper V10, and how hot the interior is, is the only reasons I don't want a Viper
Just very curious.. why why why you aren't wearing your seatbelt in a hellcat redeye viper? Just to up the odds of death in the event of a crash? I will never understand not wearing a seatbelt, even just tooling around town.
Maybe a collab with tdib and throttle for a finish up of the magnum should be done 😉
Sounds heck of alot better than the gargly V-10.
8:09 the roof is coming off 😮😮
I like 6, 10 and 12 cylinders, so not my cup of tea. I've always liked that generation of Viper, ever since the tv show with the same name. Thank you for living to tell the tale. 😁 Hope you get to drive their Mk4 Supra, or the FREK soon.
Dope
I wonder what that hellcat motor would sound like through side pipes?
The pedal thing would bug me. Crazy car
I know it's a V8. It still sounds almost like a v10 because of the headers / exhaust. Am I wrong?
thats what i said !!!!!!!!
V8 vipers are awesome
A great example is the Zackspeed V8 viper
Dominated its class
That swap is by far the scariest build I have seen so far
nuts
It almost still has the essence of the v10 with the way it sounds
The Banshee.
