"Then in 1979, the USSR thought it would need its own Vietnam, and invaded Afghanistan"

1:12 It wasn't so obvious from their perspective, the same way people today argue about whether China will surpass the US economy or that China's economy is about to crash, but people in the future will feel as if it was obvious
Much of what we now know to have been true back in 1965 wasn't so clear at the time

@@Joshuawalsh24Walsh I mean your kinda right and wrong depending on how you see it like we all know that the marines are UNSTOPPABLE but the US did lose a few wars like: the Vietnam war (which I know you know just need to put the on the list) the war of 1812 the Iraq war ( I'm not sure if that the same war as Afghanistan but I know they lost both ether way) the Korean war and I think that's about it so about like 4-5 wars lost in hundred something conflicts. But so that was the part where you were wrong I'm going to make the part where you're right in a new reply because this one to long

@@Joshuawalsh24Walshthe part where you're right is as said before the marines are unstoppable and that makes the question how can the us lose wars well in wars like Vietnam (as again i'm sure you know) they couldn't see there enemies nor traps, and the Iraq war (And bay of pigs but that was more a battle then a war) they didn't have enough resources mostly because the government thought "mmmh well we have one of if not THE greatest military in the world how 'bout we send them with not but just guns and ammo and barely any food and expect the locals to help them out as well, as if the locals are also trained professionals of lethal equipment and weaponry that should work VERY well" and hence not very promising outcomes

@@Joshuawalsh24Walsh so TL;Dr the marines are unstoppable as well as they're in a war that is actually manageable and if they actually have at least decent equipment

My grandfather served in the US Marine Corps in the Vietnam War as a draftee. While he despised the idea of fighting in an unpopular and unnecessary war, he still was proud to serve and did his duty without question (he planned on enlisting anyway before he was drafted). He and others also hated Kissinger, McNamara and a few others for how the war was handled and despised the corruption and ineffectiveness of the ARVN army.

You oversimplified it. South Korea wouldn’t exist as it is today without American intervention, which spearheaded a UN mission. Unlike Vietnam, the US had UN backing in Korea, thanks to the Soviet boycott and CCP exclusion from the Security Council. This gave the Korean intervention legitimacy, while Vietnam, lacking UN support, was seen as illegitimate by the world due the soviet and CCP veto.
The US entered Vietnam for strategic reasons, aiming to secure a reliable ally in the region. Given the South China Sea’s importance to maritime trade today, they weren’t entirely wrong, even if their approach failed.
