- Chinese companies have invested heavily in Africa, in recent years, and trade among Asian and African nations has soared. As their economic ties have grown, so have the number of African immigrants to China, now estimated at around half a million people. Shannon Van Sant talked with Africans who have re-located to the Chinese capital city about why they decided to move to China.

Wow! I don't know what that girl experienced in Europe and America but for her to say that racism is cute in China, it had to have been horrible, to put those two words in one sentence is painfully agonizing, just the mere stupidity behind that is beyond my comprehension but to each it's own.
In China, it's generally not racism, but more like curiosity. Remember, a lot of Chinese have never seen an actual black person before. The average Chinese has a lot less worldly exposure than the average American.

bc humans are like that. When an asian or white go in a black village in africa, they will experience racism. U put a disable child in the middle of normal childs, he will get bullied and rejected. Its simply a question of numbers. EU and US, are white countries, so black ppl will be repressed.
But not everywhere, in Africa, black ppl are accepted, bc these countries are in majority black , but there its more the white and asian ppl that face racism.

my son went to kindergarten in Hunan province. BTW, I’m a Chinese. There was a African little baby girl in his class. All the kids were given chance by the teacher to sit beside the little girl by turns because she was different. I totally understand why this lady says it’s racism but cute. People treat you differently and sometimes could cause problem in your life. But, sometime you can not blame them because you know they are just curious about everything about you. I’m not saying this is right. It can cause problem in your daily life.

The difference between the racism of Europeans and the racism of the Chinese is that the racism of Europeans is the racism of peoples who are being completed colonized and taken over by foreigners in their own ancestral homelands while the Chinese racism is the racism of a people who have no such worries, at least not yet.

In my experience I see a lot of hypocrisy in the Chinese attitude.
When overseas Chinese (unfortunately) experience racism in western countries, they are very vocal about it, hold protests etc
But when it comes to racism in China, there is widespread denial. Chinese people often excuse it as just 'rude behaviour' and not the outright racism it is.
Hostility to darker skin may relate to the fact that traditionally those who worked out in the sun got naturally darker than the 'privileged' people who worked in palaces and so on and who were naturally whiter
I wouldn't say 'China is a racist country' because we can't dismiss a whole country like that. And in my experience Chinese people are mostly hospitable (but then again, im a white guy)
But it is obvious that Chinese (or Japanese/Korean) society is not as tolerant to diversity as western countries are.
And in contrast to the west, racism in China is not punished.
You are right China is a racist country, I'm Chinese my self and was a little discriminated against because I'm Chinese Canadian. But I feel the main difference is , China does not advertise/ want immigration where as in North America it is advertised that people of different cultures should come.
As for you being white, they are more tolerable because of North American Media influence.For example in Hollywood movies whites are shown in a positive light were blacks are not.

Look up the Dungan Revolt of the 1860s-1870s, one of the bloodiest conflicts in Chinese history. Most Chinese Muslims today are integrated but there remain complex issues in Xinjiang.
According to the 2010 census china's foreign population was about 594,000 which is less than 0,05% !!
There’s a lot of people who aren’t in China that don’t understand what she means. She’s talking about general curiosity out of never having seen a black person before. When you are white in China you stand out. Black even more so. So they might do weird things like touch your hair to see if it’s real. Or stare at you for a long time. Or have some stereotype that prompts them to ask a question that is so outlandish you have to laugh. Or kids staring at you with hilarious faces. There’s also the other type of racism that you might witness from Chinese working in Africa or in Guangzhou where the population of blacks is much higher. That is a much different animal.
I wouldn't call Japan racist. I'm black and I've lived there for over a yr. I loved it, and it was the best experience of my life. Of course there were occasions where I felt targeted, but for the most part, Japanese ppl are amongst the sweetest I've encountered. Like the lady on the video, most of the "racism" was more about curiosity than irrational hate. I've encountered more racism in the U.S. than Japan. I've made life long friends, and I'm grateful for the experience.

Also the govt is proactive in dealing with racism too. There are laws to protect expats. The worst discrimination I have seen in China is that directed towards the Philipinos (domestic worker situations) and Nepalese, and Indonesians.

Chinese is a language. Mandarin, Cantonese, and a zillion other dialects are Chinese languages. When i say I am learning Chinese it's assumed I am learning Mandarin, the business language of the mainland. Cantonese is the language of Hong Kong. But most educated people of HK speak Mandarin also.

Ahhh,I see what you're saying. Here in the West, people know the history of black people, and that racism is passed down. But in the East, their racism (mostly) comes from ignorance, they just plain don't know the history of black people and what they've been through. Some of it has to do with xenophobia too though; rejection/fear of anyone or anything foreign. But I get it now: dealing with racism in a homogenous country is a bit different than racism in an ethnically mixed country.
Im not tryna sound PC or politically correct. I understood what language he was talking about in the video and I know they speak mandarin as their primary language in mainland china. I just don't understand why he said he learned chinese (nationality) when describing the language he learned at age 13. Its like a foreigner coming to american and saying he learned how to speak american at age 13.
Sigh. Actually it's perfectly acceptable to say I'm learning Chinese. It's understood you as a foreigner are studying mandarin if you reside on the mainland. Why? Be CAREFUL who you recommend China to. The best and brightest will do well. I love living here but you must be strong to live here. As a light skinned black American I get a pass. I am treated fairly well. I can get a taxi. I get treated well because I dress well and they know immediately I am an American. But there is REAL discrimination and visa harrassment for those of a darker hue by the govt., African or African American.It is what it is. The people however I have an affinity for.
Hmmm maybe I should convince other African Americans to think about China! Seems like many countries in Asia aren't as bad as europeans make it out to be!

Every nation want to build a stable and harmonious society to the best of it capabilities for ease of life for its people and future generations. If you are an emigrant or expatriate in a country and don't respect the law and social order of that society, by all means you shouldn't be spared a day within the confines of that countries border. Africans, like many other race, are dispersed and seeking greener pastures in many different continents and demographics, and sadly quite often tends to be recalcitrant and grossly not law abiding citizens.
However, generalization is naive and ignorant, two siblings from the same parent can grow and have different dispositions and temperaments, talk less of an entire race. They are good Africans in the diaspora, but the fact of the matter is, most of this Africans don't tends to be giving a good expression of the few good ones. I have studied both in Malaysia and United kingdom for a good number of years in each country, one thing that is sadly consistent and familiar quite often is the lack of morals and defiant dispositions of the Africans, unfortunately most especially Nigerians.
I'm an African, and a Nigerian, and I can understand some of the grievances and repulsion of the Chines towards Africans, unfortunately quite often we tends to be the victims of our own wrongs. However, racism is outright ignorance and bigotry, but then again if you are confident in yourself, law abiding, and mind your own damn business, who give a shit about a racist or anything else?
