- Part One of excerpts from horror-opera Sweeney Todd (Prelude - Organ/The Ballad of Sweeney Tood) starring Bryn Terfel (Sweeny Todd) and Maria Friedman (Mrs Lovett) marking Stephen Sondheim's 80th Birthday at Proms 2010, David Charles Abell conducts the BBC Concert Orchestra & The Proms Sondheim Ensemble
That prelude with the melody mix of Lucy’s song and Sweeney’s Epiphany was both heartbreaking and impressive
very few things as terrifying as a large organ
Make that an organ constantly paraphrasing Dies Irae.
thats what she said
pacman4r funny.
Depends on your position
The conflicting yet beautiful chords in the "Swing your razor" part comprises the most complicated and emotionally strong harmonies I've heard in this genre.
The organ opening is chilling, the company's singing is crisp and slick. And then at 4:44......BOOM!!! the power behind Bryn Terfel's voice is just unbelievable!!
This is probably my favorite piece of music ever, along with the Phantom overture. I'd try to list all the things I love about it but it would probably turn into an essay.
Same
+Bok Choy I have a friend who has a Doctorate in Music, who's an expert organist.......I'd LOVE to hear him play the Prelude...........
Mr. Terfel presents himself as a serious actor, one who values the visual as well as the aural. Very impressive.
Bryn commits 100% 24/7. Now that's a performer! Love him ❤
Hes honestly my favorite Sweeney
bryn terfel's quiet, restrained menace during that opening... ooooooooooooh
I love the full prelude, especially when it goes into a variation Green Finch and Linnet Bird :D
That prelude is just phenomenal. I played bits of it in the NYMT production but they'd cut a lot out for time. Shame, I would have loved to have done all of it.
Absolutely amazing hearing the prelude on the Albert organ. I'm gonna go play it right now on my much much smaller organ.
Bryn Terfel BETTER be cast as the Judge in the next revival. He'd be perfect
Pretty excited to hear the news of Bryn Terfel playing Sweeney Todd in a concert in with the Philharmonic soon! :D
This phantom and Hamilton are the three best openings in broadway (just an opinion don’t hassle me please)
Ummm....for you
.....mannnnnnny people would disagree
Ever seen Ragtime?
@@rugby8-Philadelphia Haven't heard the other two.
But will agree, this is certainly one of the best.
Along with West Side Story.
IMHO.
@@saleconomos473 You should check out "The Old Red Hills of Home" from Parade by Jason Robert Brown!

Brown himself is considered a protege of Stephen Sondheim(composer/lyricist of this show), with a bit of a more Billy Joel inspired edge, and his score and lyrics for Parade is VERY creative and have even been commented by Sondheim as one of the few times he felt he could put his pen down. It is THAT great!
And perhaps even the Prologue from Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet of 1812, by composer/lyricist/playwright/orchestrator/actor Dave Malloy!
There's two cast recordings. One for when it was off Broadway, with Dave in the title role as Pierre and Phillipa Soo(Eliza Herself!) as Natasha:

And then there's the Broadway version, with Josh Groban making his Broadway Debut as Pierre!

(P.S. Both of these casts are the exact same, except for who plays Natasha, Pierre, and Andrey/Old Prince Bolkonsky)
I myself, also consider it on par with Sondheim levels of creativity!
agreed. Les mis comes close as well
Agree that these are all great. I’d go back a few more decades and add “Tradition” from Fiddler On The Roof to the list.
I'm chuffed to see this reproduced here. It was quite an exciting moment to play!
Just played this with an amazing Youth theatre group. Awesome stuff!
Wow!!! Goosebumps!!
Once again...Proms nails it.
Fantastic.
Imagine doing this in a school play and also sell meatpies to the audience.
WHY does everyone do this in high school but me? T.T
I didn't!
Michael Stokes my college/community choir is doing this song
My school thought about it but we had an orchestra but we didnt have those type of string instruments who could do this, instead we did Pippin
Great work, Rod. You must be sooooo proud.
Phil Thomas
Awesome! love the ballad!
Have always had trouble watching BT push his sound out of the side of his face....
Omg I was wondering why he was doing that😂😂
He's been doing it since he started singing professionally. But I agree with David, when you sound as amazing as him, it doesn't matter. If you listen to audio recordings of him, you wouldn't even think he does that.
....don't look
😜😜😜
The 2 dislikes are... in need of a shave ;)
The closest shave they'll ever have 😈
this gives me goosebumps it was that awsome
Love it, absolutely chilling. brought back memories of when we did this performance in high school
Oh awesome, Bryn Terfel... deep unexpected joy =)
Where the hell in Bryn suddenly spring up from? Great stage directions here in any case !
*looks at like bar*
Excellent! It would appear that nobody needs a shave. Let's keep it that way...
RIP Stephen Sondheim 😢
tim burton did this as a movie it makes sence cuz he basicily does the stuf thats pretty damn haunting
3:51 if you look carefully you can see Alex Jones looming over the guy's shoulder
@Ludlow889 Oh, yes, PLEASE!!! I would love to have a DVD of this!!!
Part of the 2010 Proms were an 80th Birthday salute to Stephen Sondheim, correct?
@musiklovebird If you think that's impressive, seek out a DVD of Sweeney Todd In Concert, from 2001. The production features a chorus of about 50. When they hit that lyric........BOOM!
He's playing Sweeney now that's the funny part
Andy nardog was here
400th like
@bummer300 No. None of them are.
Okay I'm just being a dense Yank here, but... what's "Proms?"
yikes some of these people should be ashamed to sing near bryn terfel
Bryn was wonderful but it's too scary for me.
Sweeney Todd IS NOT AN OPERA.
