The great and powerful Genghis Khan ruled what would eventually become the largest land empire in history stretching from the Korean peninsula to the far reaches of Russian homeland
The Chinese and Manchurian Dynasties would forever fear foreigners after driving out the Mongols, which would lead to political and economic self imposed isolation, while Europeans were pioneering deep water navigation, and exploring the world.
The eventual reforms to the Chinese empire would come too late as the nation was thrust into the 20th century unprepared and completely disunited.

Jar :/ even so I think it's not to much to learn his key point said everything you needed. They both focused on isolationist views. One thing I thought was interesting was how he did not mention previous wars between Qing&Japan for the area of Korea. And that be a leading hostility between the two culturally diverse nations. Even to this day relations are strained from things long ago.

Kedrik Eddlemon no, early Ming was not. You could read about stuff such as the voyages of Zheng He. It was only until the later parts of the Ming that they stopped sending voyages
Should say something about Zheng He’s fleet and his world exploration.
And Japan has never really showed their remorse in what they did in China and other parts of Asia and even told a different story in their textbooks in school to cover up the truth.

Actually Ming dynasty had invested a lot in naval development and the empire had one of the world's largest fleet in early 15th century. The fleet even visited east Africa through Indian Ocean. And the fleet established a trading network in South East Asia, which was also used by European and Japanese in the following centuries.

@@sinoroman so true! The Ming was quite successful as it existed before European powers started modernising so that ere actually quite strong. It is only because the Qing dynasty didn’t react modernise that the Qing were weak.

I'm from China. Even though there are few typos in Chinese letters, it's an overall great video, unbiased and objective, especially about the "Nanjing Massacre", which I thought almost no people outside china would know, a real tragedy documented by a lot of photos, footage but neglected by the world. There's much to be criticized about our government, but overall people's life is getting better these days, most Chinese believe that we will correct our mistakes and become better in the years after. About the censoring, actually most Chinese could find their way to climb the infamous "Great Firewall of China" with not too much effort, and no one will be arrested or fined if found doing so, everybody just keeps low. I'm not saying this is a good thing, but at least there's hope.

Yeah but they got the Hongwu Emperor wrong...I can understand them not getting Song Qinzong right or the Xuande Emperor, but the Hongwu Emperor is kinda ultra important to Chinese history. Like, almost Qin Shi Huang levels of important lol.

My father was part of the Tiananmen square protests. he was a high school student at that time. He left 2 days before the shootings. He said he could hear the gunshots but to him, there wasnt much killing, only a few did not make it back to their school

Sorry but you should have done 3rd part. The 19th century was waay too short and more crucial to understand why China acts why they act. The same with post civil war time. Culture revolution? Famines? Opening up markets in the 70s? You missed all that. When you do half an hour about Poland only 5 minutes for Germany and only 17 minutes for China I really have to question your priorities. China is a crucial country to understand since not many people here in the west know what happened here and why and what's happening right now. You also could have mentioned the trillion dollar infrastructure plans for a few douzens of countries which will boost their influence by a lot.

I agree. The Great Ming Empire was the most powerful country on earth at the time, and, together with the Qing Dynasty, the history spanned hundreds of years, yet it only gets a few seconds of mention? I think there could be some improvements to this video.

Yeah, I admit , there should've been more parts for china. Considering that it took me 5 hours of learning chinese history in my chinese class just to stratch the surface of chinese history from the xia dynasty to the ming dynasty, there should have been far more parts. In fact, there should've been at least 10 parts to cover the entirety of chinese history with about 3 parts dedicated to chinese history during the 20th century. China is now arguably far more important than any single european country and its a shame that a small country like Poland got more coverage than the largest country on earth in terms of population.

5:05 Nanking Massacre has never been forgotten in history by Chinese. It's only the matter of US government or Japanese government do not want their people to know. 300,000 Chinese citizens are murdered by Japanese military. Chinese will never forget what happened in Nanjing.

@@Think-About-It The western perspective on this is really one-sided and warped. My parents took part briefly in the protest and were living in Beijing at the time. They describe the incident as a civil demonstration that got way out of hand. People were literally ditching work for weeks on end. Some of the people who took part were just swept up in the momentum. It's not like they fervently wanted democracy or anything... I think that was just the people who led the protests. Most just wanted the government to be more accountable. People were angry. The government did what they thought they had to do. People got angrier. Yes, it was terrible. Yes, it should not be censored and the government should apologize. But the whole "OMG remember TianAnMen we must liberate China and make it a democracy like everyone else" thing is stupid. There is no correlation between the 6-4 incident and how the Chinese think the government should be run TODAY. Democracy isn't a cure-all answer to everything. Look who's sitting in the oval office...
@@MadCatAttack123 lol no correlation between the government then and now? If that's really the case they would allow it to be spoken about and apologize for it. But I agree with you on democracy is not a solution for everyone. It actually requires the people to be politically educated and aware.

Well done overall, special shout-out on the Nanjing Massacre, which all of Chinese felt extremely heart broken when mentioning it.
Only thing is if you are not comfortable to label the country or territory name in Chinese, no need to do that, as whoever can finish this video are all comfortable to read these word in English. As there are many typos in Chinese in the video, which makes Chinese reading viewer feel a little weird to read it.

This just shown the modern provinces of China, Heart of iron only shows some simple warlord, but in reality, it is much more complicated
Ceasarcomeback Well kinda true but alot of cliques like Yunnan and Xinjang were in their provinces situated and if I recall there is no such province as Fengtiang. But I am aware of some like Anhui should be bigger even that clique stopped existing in 1920 also HOI4 only show some remnants like Shanxi, Ma and Xinjang if I recall right when warlords are mostly dead and incorporated in KMT.
He forgot to update it as Guizhou and Guangdong were controlled by Central Government by 1938

Saying that China is culturally isolated is absurd. China is actually embracing a more open form of fashion, music, living style, and movie just like the west. However, in terms of politics, China is controlled by one party which dictates the direction of economy and political stability.

Quite accurate on content but minor pronunciation error that can cause misunderstanding.(Ex. Yuan Dynasty should sound like E-u-ann not H-uan. The first emperor of Ming's name was completely unrecognizable.) If I were to do an episode of another culture, I would try to consult from at least one person from them and fix this kind of error. But I trust you made your best effort, good work!

Fun fact: Hitler and the Nazis were actually opposed to the Japanese invasion of China and wanted to send guns tanks aircraft and some military officers to help the Chinese defensive war against the Japanese Empire but the British and French governments told the Nazis that they couldn't help the Chinese because they were afraid of a Nazi-Chinese Alliance

Besides some Chinese typos in the maps, it's very impressive that you have a fairly deep grasp of Chinese history esp. on the convoluting modern history.
Good video, but does anybody notice that you have there are a lot of errors in names of Cities and even dynasties. For example: at 3:24, KMT's Chinese subtitle is ＂大清＂(literally means "Great Qing Dynasty") and Beiping's Chinese subtitle is "大都" which is the name of Beijing during the Yuan dynasty.

It is not difficult to get in touch with youtube in China. The network of Chinese universities can be legally connected to the outside through ipv6. And getting a VPN is not difficult for people who are proficient in using computers. It seems that China's network isolation is mainly aimed at people with lower education levels.

As a Chinese, one thing I think should be noticed. China actually opened its internet to the world and allowed media of the West to come in until 2008. I admit China doesn't allow people to criticise the government or leaders. But, the main cause of this internet wall was that Chinese law had very strict restrictions on Drugs, vaping, and pornography. These things ain't allowed on the Chinese internet, Google never respected those laws. There was a conflict happened in 2008 with that, then the government decided to build the wall.
Suibhne made the case sound like CCP wanted to control the people of China, but that was not the case at all. Chinese Internet actually has a lot of entertainment and different media, video making, reading websites, and much more. It had really little difference from the western media.

The opium war is not because China didn't want to trade with the British, it is because China did the trade too well, and earned all the slivers of British. British wanted to reverse the trade deficit just like the US did today, and they started to send opium to get the money back.
The modernisation of Qing part needs to be rewritten.. you haven’t mentioned much on the topic of Opium war. While the Chinese government officials want to destroy the drugs (opium) brought in by the British merchants, the British took this as an assault (whereas no physical harm has been done to these British merchants) and reported to the queen.. so the queen sent army to protect these drug lords in the east. Isn’t that absurd to think today if one nation send armies to protect the drug lords of its subjects in another nation? Yeah, welcome to the age of colonisation. China will be modernised regardless of the bloodshed and conflict, but the British (and all the colonial powers) only care about their pocket (and the land of the colonised). Can you tell me, when Chinese want to seat down and have conversations (like we do today in the UN) and the British waged military actions against Chinese officials and cilivians alike, and in the end burned down the Summer palace (and the hundreds of servants together in the palace), who is more modern and who is more civilised, by today’s standards?
1:13 Yuan Dynasty should have been written as 元. You wrote 代遠, which as far as I know isn't even legible Chinese. And the pronunciation of Yuan is like if you say U.N. really fast, not "Juan" as in Spanish.
1:28 The founder and first emperor of the Ming Dynasty is Chu Yuan-chang / Zhu Yuanzhang. Nobody calls him by his first name "Yuan-chang" only, if that's what you did. I listened to that bit a few times but couldn't quite figure out what you said.
2:45 After the collapse of the Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China was founded first, at least nominally. The Warlord Ear is part of the Republic's history, and not a separate period.
2:50 Why are all the pieces of the divided country labeled as 大清, which means the Qing Dynasty? The Qing was already gone at this point.
KMT's Chiang never wanted an alliance with the Communists, but was forced to do so after being kidnapped by his own general. He perceived the Communists as the more dangerous enemy than even the Japanese.
The KMT, although not a match to the Japanese, did eventually hold the Japanese off, with American support. The Communists, on the other hand, didn't really contribute much to the war effort, and even sort of back-stabbed the KMT. Japan didn't even recognize them as belligerents. The supposed heroics of the Communists' resistance to the invading Japan were mostly post-war Communist propaganda.
You're just trying to white-wash the Mexican conquest of China out of the history books. Cats outta the bag, fella, no use denying the Juan Dynasty.

Fun fact though, Spain did briefly colonized the island of Taiwan (Spanish Formosa) back in the 17th century, but was eventually driven out by the competing Dutch. There are to this day some places in Taiwan that are named by the Spanish (i.e. Cape Santiago) that even the Taiwanese local didn't know about the origins.

It's interesting that Tianamen Square was mentioned (as it should be), but what was never mentioned in this video were the equally horrific persecutions in Taiwan (Formosa) of anyone who did not support the Kuomintang, including the cutting off of tongues of dissidents and beheadings of civilians.
The whole Taiwan situation is somewhat similar to if we imagine the southern states in the American Revolutionary wars, to have fled to Texas and declared independence, despite officially having lost the civil war.. Do you think USA wouldnt find Texas illegitimate, and do you think they wouldnt see it as perfectly reasonable to request secession back to USA?
Just food for thought. Taiwan is a beautiful country today, and mutual tourism and friendships exist between both territories.
But that doesnt change the fact that its history shows us that it was never formed as a legitimate nation state.
It was formed as a pseudo-dictatorship, which then used western allies such as USA to entrench its legitimacy in the island.
This doesnt have to do with "communism vs democracy", it has to do with simple, cold, hard truths of history.
For the record, no i'm not chinese. I'm Swedish, and very much a proponent for democracy and liberty.
But again, that doesnt mean we should just close our eyes to what actually happened in historical facts.
From the fact that you mentioned the former name "Formosa" I knew you did a lot of research about Taiwan. Kudos.
democracy is a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives and communism, well in this case socialism is a political and economic system of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole. democracy can and does exist within socialism/ in communist parties!

I don't like how you depicted WWII; with the actual successes of the KMT (like the several battles of Changsha) downplayed and overstated the successes of the CCP (who were for most part content to let the KMT and the Japanese fight it out).
Please make more videos about Nanjing massacre, one of the darkest and worst moment of human history yet still be denied by the Japanese

Ok look i'm in china at this moment using a vpn. its very easy to get on on your phone or computer and plus there not as strict as people say. i'm not saying past events never happened but i was able to get a nintendo switch from a city that wasn't hong kong.
Using a VPN to get around a law isn't the same as said law not existing. It's like saying apples are free because you can easily steal them.

Actually. It was a simply case of Google and Facebook refused to obey Chinese law like they obey EU and American laws.
And with China, there is an additional thing that was apparently the main conflicts that ended in Google and Facebook being blocked: money.
China at the time saw the potential profit internet platforms can bring, so they decided that no foreign company is going to come to China and funnel Chinese people’s money to the land of the enemies. So they asked the foreign companies to collaborate with Chinese IT companies, so the money earned in China still circulate in China.
As far as I know, Steam, Blizzard, Riot and many other gaming(platform) companies agreed to similar deals, and they are allowed to operate in China but their Chinese servers are provided by companies like Wangyi, perfectworld, and Tencent, some even have their game completely managed by these companies, so you will see everywhere in the world, you can only grind in WoW to get gold(before that update in... 2015 or was it 2016) but in China, you could top up through legit WoW top up cards since the beginning. Or games like DotA, LoL, and PUBG have massive overhauls in terms of business model, skins, character designs and graphical effects(like blood are turned green for age restriction reasons).
Google could have agreed to such a deal, but it didn’t. So in China people now use Baidu.
And if you ask me, Baidu is a lot better if you type in Chinese. Google’s Chinese keyword detection is not ideal.
