- In this video tutorial we cover how you can start strapless jumping while kitesurfing! Find more videos on our new website here: flukeskitesurfing.com/ The Load and Pop Strapless Kitesurfing Jump is a great jump to learn that will help build a technique that will help with other strapless jump tricks. It helps create a technique that isn't dependent on launch ramps. So you can jump in flat water, and also jump much better when you do have ramps. Once you master the load and pop, work on flying further and progress to the nest tricks such as strapless front rolls, reverses and even board offs. All of which you can use this launch as your base.
Best conditions to learn The Load and Pop Strapless Kitesurfing Jump
Flatwater.
Try in between waves
Try on the small chop.
20 knots wind.
Board not too heavy
How to jump strapless doing the load and pop
Traveling with moderate speed
Kite to 11
Tend downwind slightly
Edge moderately hard (board points more into the wind to help the nose climb)
At the same time, Pop off your back foot
Take your back hand off the bar
Over emphasize your front foot up
Help lift into the air sheeting in slowly
Twist your board by pushing your back foot out.
Bring your back foot in slightly for landing
Sheet in with bar (front hand)
Remember (like with any jump) you will land pointing downwind.
(About 45 degrees.)
Common Strapless Jumping Problems
1. Flying away from the board. Sheeting in too much (kite pulls you away)
Wind speed. (this is much harder on a 12M) (see my foot slipping)
Your speed. fast enough to have wind speed, slow enough that you can control your edge well) experiment
2. Board not lifting up at all:Focus on the pop, the front foot compress. overemphasize your front foot lift and let the wind bring the board up. (less about jumping, more about lifting your front knee)
3. Your jumping but Flying through the air awkwardlyNot taking your backhand off the bar. (closing yourself off to the twist)
4. Falling over the front of the board on landing. Try forcing the board forward just before landing. Keep more compressed during the jump
Hope that was helpful. We have been working hard on our beginner learn to kite course. and now, we're back making some youtube videos! this year we working on intermediate and twintip and strapless videos, so let us know what you want to see!

Very informative.
Thanks, brother.
Glad it was helpful!
Nice one! Thanks!
What is the next progression, to make a higher but controlled jumps?
Hi Flukes
I would love to see a tutorial on how to body drag upwind, if you ever get the chance. Great videos! Thanks
Hey Teagan, Cool thanks, we do have that one in our course, but not on TY. :)
Hi Luke. Just another basic question .. when riding a TT - just before load and pop - how do you sail compared to the wind .. a litte off / downwind of 90” to the wind? Across the wind 90”? or a liite upwind of 90”?
Hey Lars, the load and pop is much the same with a Twintip. before launch you "a little off" and then "a little upwind" then release your rail and sheet in and you'll get a great load and pop jump. to understand, tending off a bit will let you increase speed, then carving upwind a bit will let you tension up the lines and sling you into the air.
Great video, thanks! I’ve been trying this for a while but find it difficult to let go with my back hand, which, the way I’m going, is my right ( and stronger) hand. So leaving my less able hand forward and alone on the bar seems quite difficult and unnatural. What I wanted to ask is if there’s a way this can work without the back hand letting go? I have landed a few of these jumps like that, but am having difficulty with landings (too hard) or travel time (too short), but was thinking eventually I’ll pull it off…
Hey Dirk, yeah you can do both hands... but its harder and closes off your body, but it is possible. for other jumps like the board off i leave both hands on the bar while going up into the air for instance. that said, for thei air, I'd suggest just trying a few without the backhand until you get used to it. It will help in the long run :)
@@FlukesKitesurfing Cheers! Yeah, have been trying some letting go of the backhand and that seems to be helping.
What vest do you wear for floatation
You should wear one that fits you best. (try them on a shop) they all fit slightly differently. I was wearing an ION one. :)
Aloha Luke! What percentage of your air comes from your speed/pop from the board, and what percentage comes from sheeting in/using the power of the kite?
Hey Chris, a lot of it depends on the wind speed. with high wind it is possible to start the jump slowly, as the high wind will; a. allow the kite to easily lift you up . b. hold the board on your feet. that would be over 80% kite. But in low wind, most of the jump comes from your generated speed to pop and hold the board on your feet with apparent wind. that would be over 80% technique. The best way to learn and do bigger jumps it is to do a combo of both. Get in strong wind, go really fast and pop up hard. Hope that helps :)
@@FlukesKitesurfing that helps a lot, thanks so much!! My hardest challenge so far has been getting pulled up and off my board - I think I might be using too much kite on the lighter wind days, and will try to generate more speed and pop on my own as you suggest. I think I could also experiment with coming off the wind a bit just before my pop so I don't get disconnected with from my board if I catch a gust. I appreciate you getting back to me and all of your great videos I have seen. If you are ever on Maui, hit me up. Aloha!!
Hi look! IDidn`t you do a video about the front? I thought so, but kind find it. I know you can do it 🙂
Hmm, I know i meant to make one but don't think it is posted... Ill try and make one this summer as i'm finally about ready to make some videos.
@@FlukesKitesurfing yeah, awesome!
Hi, is there a reason why kiteboarder doesn't go very far from shore, unlike sailing?
We usually don’t kite farther than we can swim back unless we’re in groups
Hey 7madness, yes, exactly as Inklizian explains, unlike Sailing, if the wind drops you can't just float around comfortably in your boat, that's why you should never kite further out than you feel you can swim back to the beach in the event you lose your kite or hurt yourself etc
