Just let me say that I consider you my virtual master of the kite art. I can't thank you enough for all the lessons over the years. Know that you make a beginner Brazilian kitesurfer want to evolve every time I hit the water. It's always a pleasure put the doctrine to work!
Thanks so much Felipe! Your comment is much appreciated and I'm even more excited that I inspire you to go out there and have fun! Keep on shredding and hopefully see you in the sky 🤙

Please do a video of the preload pop! Really struggle with that😅
Please add on the to do list: take off difference between kiteshapes and Kitesizes
E.g. I struggled a lot to jump with my dice. But I am super happy to jump with a Rebel now. I can jump high with a 8/10 but really struggle to jump high with a 13 - it always pulls me away not high.
@@DNNYZGLR It's a super interesting topic! I'll have a look in to it. Thanks for the suggestion!
Very appreciated, your lessons. As a former pro team-sport-athlete and coach of respecting youth-programm, you deserve my deep and honest respect for your worthy contributions to kite-skill-developement. Very helpful to push levels in this sport.
You provide your experience and knowledge very clear and understandable to youth and even to oldies like me.
Much appreciated! Thanks for the nice words and I'm very happy to share my knowledge! Keep on shredding and having fun out there 🤙
That shot when the kite shoots forward in the wind window is brilliant and should have been repeated in the video
I'm glad that you like it!

Great video SA.... Am I guessing that most don't need to consider pre-load pop until consistently jumping 10m+++ The most benefit is working on the basics in this video which are critical to get to 10m
You got that right. If you're starting to jump higher the pre load pop can make a difference (both good and bad) I'll work on a dedicated video where I dive really deep in to the pre load pop to see why it works etc.
Great advice!! Thanks

Very good video. About the misconception of strecth and that the lines would function as a spring… The stretch of kitelines (all dyneema) is approximately zero so kitelines acting like springs is impossible. It would even be very hard to kite properly with stretching lines 😢
Totally agree, makes me wonder what stretchy lines would kite like. Might try that out for a video

@@stevenakkersdijk that would be sick! Thank you! I have been looking up load and pop videos a lot lately and you did a very good job explaining when to pop. Most videos don’t cover when to raise the kite and when to pop. Also I liked that you said you steer the kite down a bit. I bet that would be great for adding a little more height with big air! 🤙🤙
I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees through the constant misinformation of the lines being like rubber bands
Imagine how soft the handling of the kite would feel with rubber bands on the steering lines 😅

Hi Steven. Thanks for your video, very cool and instructive! What board (carved imperator) length you would recommend for big air in flat water, regular wind at 20-25 knots for 82kg rider ?
Personally I ride a 139 and wouldn't want to go smaller as bigger boards make for stable landings.
I'm 86kg, so I would recommend a 137cm for you.

Thanks Steven! Tips for edging in the IJsselmeer chop? Really hard to maintain edge and boardspeed.
My pleasure. Try to read the water and find a small space to pop out off the water. It's not easy, but possible 😉
What should my expectations be in choppy waters? Brazil or Cabarete for example. Same rules apply or "forget about it and head to the lagoon"?
Lagoon is a lot easier for sure, but with some practise you can find the right spot for a take off in the waves as well. So give it a bit of time 😉
Thanks for yet another great tutorial!
At 06:21 you bear a bit downwind before the pop. Some other pop tutorials say you have to do that right before the pop. But you don't mention this in your video. When is bearing downwind before the pop necessary and when is it not?
Generally you don't have to bear downwind because cross wind will do the trick. Main important part is that you accelerate.
It's to do with the type of kite,

Any advise on how to pop in chop with a big kite? I am really having problems with my carved imperator 141/43 and the Juice DLAB 15sqm as I always hit a wave with my butt every time I load and am about to pop. Thanks Steven!
Try to ride a bit slower as this should help you to pick a nice take off spot which is very important. Next to that you can already place your kite high in the wind window (1 or 11) in order to have a shorter carve with your jumps.
I'm still waiting for the heli loop video :)
Coming soon! I've filmed it, "just" need to edit and film the talking part. (still a lot of work)
@@stevenakkersdijk that's great, I'm looking forward to it
Edging: going straight on an edge; carving: turning on an edge. Same as skiing 😊
Nice, I didn't realize they used the same wording for skiing.
Loved the video so much I "liked" it twice. Curious as to why you don't show it with an edge release before loading up? To prevent people for getting stuck on it and still doing it during sent jumps? Also is Gayley not longer a politically correct term for hooked Raleys?
Great stuff 😉 The pre load pop or edge release is very tricky when it comes to timing and I would say that 80-90% of the people should rather focus on kite timing first. I sometimes use it, but to be very honest I don't know why or in which conditions I use it. So I need to figure all of this out first.
Gayley is a term I used quite a bit, but now I prefer to use hooked railey 😅
@@stevenakkersdijk I didn't mean pre-load pop. Was referring to heading downwind before loading up and popping as you would on unhooked and no-school tricks as it provides a more explosive "yeet".
When you head downwind, you lose all the Power acumulated.
@@dougfv you allow the kite to drift into the power zone while it loses line tension, as you load out of it the kite gets tension and flies towards the wind's edge giving you a bigger pop.
@@tonymikhalyuk3085 Only works if you're riding very fast and pull the bar down whilst you bear off downwind. Otherwise the kite stays in the same spot or even flies out of the window. When done correct it helps a lot for some extra kick, but most people do it incorrect resulting in less power.
Yes pre load pop

I need help, Steven. Great video as usual. You make it look so damn easy.
I've been jumping ugly for years and I think the reason is that I cannot load and pop very well.
Some folks say I should keep the kite at 10 o'clock. You say that the kite will move forward when you carve hard. Whenever I try to load and pop my kite always goes up to 12. Help!!
Hey Jon. When you load the lines and pop it's important to pull the bar down with equal pressure on both hands, otherwise you'll give it steering input. Sounds like you pull harder with the top hand making the kite steer up.
Keep an eye on the kite to prevent it from shooting up. You'll probably have to steer it down a bit for your feeling.
@@stevenakkersdijk thanks. I'll try that. And try to keep my back leg bent. I'm a tall Dutchman like you so it's encouraging to see you flying so high.

@@stevenakkersdijk Been practicing preload pop on larger kites, but its quite a bit more difficult to time with smaller kites! Could use some tips about how fast I should be directing the kite towards 12. Does moving the kite faster produce more lift, or will it cause you to come off your edge and lose line tension?
Some tips on performing the preload pop on choppy water and kickers would also be super helpful! Keep up the great content
Love your videos.....always clearly articulated. Thanks
It's my pleasure! Glad you enjoy the videos

Thanks, will do!
Preload pop is a game changer in flat water, but super hard in chop, and I don't notice much improvement if I have good kickers. Definitely an important tool, but for most people it's a distraction that adds too much variance into the takeoff.
It's merely a semantic difference, but I find it helpful to tell beginning jumpers "don't try to pop." Simply because the tendency is to try to use your legs to jump. I tell my students to "hold your edge, carve upwind, and let the kite rip you off the water." It's really the same thing, but when people are trying to "pop" they really seem to want to push off with their legs and give up their edge.
Totally agree! There isn't one way to teach people how to jump. Especially beginners should focus on carving and kite steering and not worry about kicking off the water. (Just like you said)
Thanks for sharing your experience 🤙
This tip helped me jump better! I made a video on that, still not higher than 3Meters, but i got the idea..thanks!
Perfectly said. If you are powered and carrying a lot of speed, I find a short back leg twitch is enough to send me as high as I want to go. A good practice is to use the wake of other kiters as a micro-kicker. It's amazing. Too much hopping and changing direction, one can lose the integrity of the energy necessary for a fully controlled jump sequence. Core strength is mandatory as Stephen says. Core kites too. Keep that kite moving.
Gethighwithmike has a really nice video for the preload-pop. Managed to pull way better kiteloops with this technique because of the nice vertical takeoff. Still not getting the timing consistently, therefore a video with a detailed explanation would be a dream. In my opinion your technical explanations are by far the best in the industry, so I would appreciate a video brother🤙
I also enjoyed Gethighwithmike his video a lot, it's definitely a trick that can improve your height and take offs. But as you mention it's hard to do them consistent.
I'll work on a pre load pop video where I go more over the technical part. Thanks for the support 🤙
Thanks for the video! Was looking for the load pop though😅! Please share with us and thanks for those lessons !
My pleasure! I guess you were looking for the pre load pop, I'll start working on it as there is a lot of request! 🤙
+ for the preload pop video! Great explanations as always. I was just wondering if for the hooked railey you need to scoop with your front leg. From what you are saying, it seems like you can just let go of your legs and relax (i.e. no need to scoop with front leg). Thanks a lot Steven !
Hey Stafan, not exactly sure what you mean with "scoop the front leg". But when you have a solid carve the legs will naturally want to swing back bringing you in the Railey position.
Glad you like the content!
I guess letting the bar out momentarily while you carve upwind prevents stalling and allows the kite to open up the canopy to get a big gulp before you ride that sucker?
Yup, pretty much. When you let the bar out a little the kite can accelerate and shoot through the wind window.
Top d +

Here’s a tip that I borrowed from other board sports
When carving, turn your waist/hip not knees or lower body.
Turn your body into a corkscrew
Shoulders facing kite downwind
Hips turning upwind
Like a soccer player driving a kick with hip
I find it extremely helpful driving the carve with my hip/waist
Super good tip! Thanks for sharing it with us.
Hi Steven: by edging and carving we increase the flying speed and the power of the kite, but is the movement of the kite shooting forward that generates the pull to jump out of the water, right? You said that the kite shoots forward when we release that power: do you have any tips to help us figure out when is the perfect time to release? Especially unhooked where the principle is always the same I guess...thank you very much!!!
Yes, I believe it's the forward movement from the kite that creates to pull on the carve. The best moment to release depends a lot on your riding speed, kite size and amount of carving that you apply. You'll notice that the pressure in the kite builds up, but at the same time your riding speed decreases. There is a moment where the riding speed is too low and the power in the kite will decrease, when that happens you've waited too long.
Hello Steven. Thank you very much for your nice videos. One question - It is difficult for me to keep the edge - and carving into the wind is impossible. Would it help the put the straps more luv?
Depending on your strap setup, that could help. But generally they should be in the middle of the board. Make sure to pull up your toes and put pressure on your heels to edge the board while you carve upwind.
hello. thank u for the video. it's difficult learn this move to do a jump higher but when I am in the water always I think your list to do the jump as well as possible. i would an information that it doesnt concern with this video: what headphones do you use to listen to music in the water? are bluthooth for the phone music? for me the music helps to dont think so much to the moves, without losing the focus. thank u so much!!!

Hi steven great video ...im having problem with rotating if i try to carve and pop and it ends up in a big crash usually from 6m up doing a kite loop any ideas what i may be doing wrong
Thanks dave 👍
Sounds like you're loosing your edge in the carve which can induce a rotation. It's important that your board slides through the water until you pop off the water.
hey, have you been to Macapa lagoon (next to Barra Grande) about Nov 20th last year? wasn't sure if it was you : )
Hey Karol, wasn't me as I haven't been in brazil for a couple of years now. you might have seen Willow river Tonkin
Steven, I am one of your greatest fans.... but we need at least one video or a segment of a video where you can show us how to pronounce your last name.
😂 I'll see if I can add that to a video, would be fun. Thanks for the support man!
hello steven, why do you think the ralley exercise helps you to jump higher?
For the jump it helps if you're able to carve hard and hold an edge. This is exactly what you do with a railey.
Why am I going into a unwanted backroll when I carve/pop upwind when I sheet in the kite at 12. When I do it in 20-25 knots no biggie, but when I do it in 30+ and I start jumping 10m+ it becomes so fkin dangerous :(
And I dont know why it happens, its exactly at the moment of take off as well, when I sheet the bar in
It might be because you're slipping with the back foot on the moment you take off from the water or you're not kicking with the back leg. Another option could be that your kite is too far on the side, that can pull you in to a rotation.
@@stevenakkersdijk Hey Steven,
Thanks for reacting, are you actually kicking with the back leg or just agressively carving upwind at the moment of take off?
I dont think I am actually doing a kick, just steering my board agressively upwind when I do the jump. Maybe you can have a quick look, I have 2 close up jumps on the video on my channel on the video fluid sky 2024, the jumps happen between 1:10 and 1:20, just a 10 second snippet.
