A lot of the (weirder) songs on Get Behind Me Satan have a certain charm for me. Little Ghost, White Moon, and I'm Lonely (But Ain't That Lonely Yet) just have so much emotion to them. Jack and Meg's relationship was so mysterious and when they reminisce like this, it just gets to me. It's not my favorite White Stripes album, but I think it's got a lot of heart.

Get Behind Me Satan was supposed to not sound like Elephant. Whenever you have a hugely successful album (like Elephant) the smartest thing you can do artistically is to make the polar opposite of it. GBMS is one of my favorite albums and a lot of the songs on it, (Blue Orchid, The Nurse, Forever For Her (Is Over For Me), White Moon, and Red Rain) are some of their best and most "psychedelic" they ever got to sounding. Its definitely underrated.

It is my least favorite album of theirs, but it has some real gems. I saw res rain live at the greek it was awesome

Icky Thump is a great album and probably one of the most sonically diverse in their discography. I'd put it and White Blood Cells in S with Elephant, their debut and De Stijl in A, and Get Behind me Satan in B.
I agree but I would put their debut in B and get behind me satan in C.
De Stijl is in the A row for me. It’s such an underrated, solid album in my opinion and I return to it quite a bit

As a die-hard white stripes fan, Icky Thump is on most days what i would say is my favourite album of theirs. Maybe its just me, but Icky Thump, Im Slowly Turning Into You, Catch Hell Blues, Little Cream Soda, 300mph Torrential Outpour Blue, and Marty For My Love For You, are all imo great great songs.

I can understand Melon's take on all of these albums, especially the gradual improvement up until Elephant. But while I did not like the final two records of this band when I first listened to them, they've really grown on me. A deeper listen on the lyrics and gaining a better understanding of what Jack and Meg were going for kind of unlocked them for me. Different, and for sure lacking some of the initial draws for the Stripes, but still really good IMO

Carlos Quinones I think a worst to best would work better with velvet underground since they have quite a small discography.
VU and Hendrix's discographies are quite short, so he should combine them somehow.

Omg it finally happened. I finally disagree with the melon. Is this what it feels like? Having an independent opinion? Hmm. Should try it more often.
For me personally, I like the experimental, dark and gritty vibe of Icky Thump. It’s not perfect (what is) but the 180 from the direction of accessibility to trying something different not because it would get them in the hot 100 but for the sake of experimenting with their roots at a time songs like Buy U a Drank (oof) were hitting the charts. I would have their self titled album and Icky Thump sit comfortably at C. Closes the circle of life in their discography, which can’t be said for the majority of bands.
I LOVE the tier system for ranking discographies. I really enjoyed this and want to see more!

Get Behind Me Satan was recorded in jacks living room so he definitely wasn't trying to get away from the "minimalist" aspect. It's different for sure though, lots more piano and less grungy blues.

Really good series idea, definitely good for getting more videos in a "worst to best" vein without driving you crazy. Would like to see more of it.
I've always preferred White Blood Cells to Elephant, I just found it more refreshing and varied than any other Stripes album. Maybe cos it's the first one of theirs I'd heard as well, but it's just really stuck with me since I first heard it (I was probably 13 at the time).
Love this idea for a faster discography rating system. Would LOVE it even more if you were to make a follow up video to this one where you start with the white stripes albums listed as is, and end with all of Jack Whites different solo and super group projects added! ILY

You got me watching again because I've listened to all these albums but I skipped to the end to see how they all panned out to you and actually I'm different from most White Stripes fans because De Stijl is my favorite. After buying White Blood Cells and even Elephant when I bought this third or even fourth after their debut I was blown away. The blues covers are top shelf and the whole rest of the album matches that energy with its own stripped down garage rock meets the blues style. I love the slide guitar, I love Meg co-singing on "Your Southern Can Is Mine", the violin, electric or otherwise was a nice touch, and I honestly can't see why this wasn't their breakthrough instead of White Blood Cells as it did come out before.

I mostly agree with this list, except I'd easily put Icky Thump in B tier. The sort of throwaway experiments drag it down ("This Battle Is In The Air" is the first I think of), but songs like the title track, "Catch Hell Blues", and "300 MPH Torrential Outpour Blues" could have fit onto Elephant without much problem.
I hope you do more of these!
A tier list for beck would be cool. I’m in the process of listening to his albums, and to me it seems like he covers a lot of different styles over a long time, not to mention it seems like everyone has a different favorite album of his. I’d love to hear melon share his thoughts

Am I the only one who has the White Stripes self titled debut as their favorite record by them? There’s so much anger and rawness that’s so eye popping that I just love. White Blood Cells is a close second for me
I know that I am three years late, but I am really suprised to see a comment like that. I have never heard of anyone (except myself) that thinks that the self titled is the best. It's a really great and underrated album, I actually love it more than most of their work. Btw if you haven't listened to their tracks that they didn't include in the debut, you should listen to red bowling ball ruth, lafayette blues, and let's shake hands (I am sure, that you heard the third)
This is definitely a great idea for the bands people want to see worst to bests for but you dont have the time to make one for or dont think quite need one. Pls more

Icky Thump is honestly my favourite by far. Probably because it's more experimental and varied in sound, and similar to what he did with the Raconteurs which I enjoy more than the White Stripes

Hey Anthony, I got a question, I hope you respond to it. Do you rate these albums in realtion to other TWS albums solely or do you relate them accordingly to ALL other rock/all music albums?
It is a somewhat important because I don't know if your B of De Stijl in this list is higher rated than ie. Weezer White Album for example or not.

for what it's worth i like your tier lists better than "worst to best" because they arrange an artist's discography chronologically and more easily tell a story than just "i like this album better than this one"
great video, i really liked this format! now to complain about your opinions...
i actually think GBMS might be my favourite white stripes album, and i know that might be an unpopular opinion. a lot of people aren't crazy about it because it's quite different from the rest but that's why it stands out to me. i appreciate the experimentation and i think there are a lot of really catchy and beautiful tracks on it. after GBSM my ranking is elephant > de stijl > white blood cells > the white stripes > icky thump (on which one of the best tracks is rag 'n' bone, FIGHT ME MELON). i'm not 100% sure about the last two, they could be interchangeable 'cause both have highs and lows and tracks that i love.
I think Under Great Northern Lights and It Might Get Loud puts Icky Thump and Get Behind Me Satan in perspective. Jack has always felt that music is something to wrestle with and be raw. I think your opinions on those albums line up with his personal goals.

yeah id say icky thump is a solid B for me. GBMS id put at C because I got a lot of listens to that album as a kid (like, 10 year old kid) and its definitely more enjoyable than Anthony gives it credit for. But overall id say its ok.

I think their first album is my favorite by them, there second being my second fav. I do see your points though for your ranking of the first one, personally I like it because of the pure rawness and simplicity, probably because of the inspiring feeling i get from it being a beginner.
