I drove one of these for a year at a job. They were great in a city, lots of torque, easy to park, good handling. The bad; seats were very uncomfortable, maybe that was because it was a fleet vehicle, and people kinda trashed them. The charge was always an issue, the older the bolt was, the more we had to charge it.

If you do a few long trips then it fine but if you regularly do travel far then you look elsewhere for an ev. Yes gm had been noted to have the better brake blending of regen and regular brakes. Nice to see some more base spec EVs for the everyday person! And were those 3 coolant reservoirs I saw? What are they for?

    • @Catz0125
      @Catz0125 Год назад +2

The three reservoirs each serve a unique function. One to cool the power electronics (inverter, or what drives the motor), one to heat/cool the battery (using either refrigerant to cool or resistive heating to heat), and one for the cabin heater (resistive heating).
The one to heat/cool the battery is a super important feature for an EV to have, as lithium batteries operate best in a certain temperature range. They can even become damaged and start to lose capacity without a cooling system in hot climates. Usually the battery cooling system on my Bolt kicks in a bit above 90F.

Thanks for the review, appreciate all the honest info and opinion on it, especially the nice POV of the interior while driving. I'm really eyeing up the 2023 Bolt EUV as it's potentially going to qualify for the $7,500 EV tax rebate that goes in effect January. At my price range it would bring the EUV from attainable to pretty much a no brainer, of course that's if it does end up qualifying. Still, definitely a contender to replace my old Sonata, and since on an average week I drive less than 100 miles total the slower charging speed should be a general non-issue.

But one fun little quirk that nobody knows about that might still be in the Bolt is that, if you aren't wearing a seatbelt, the vehicle will idle -- it will roll forward without throttle. But when you buckle it, it will roll to a complete stop. Would love to know if it's still a feature.

Little longer (6"), more rear legroom (3"), the cargo space is actually a little more than the Bolt EV realistically but the way the government makes them measure its less, available sunroof and super cruise. And its not much more money. That's why people would choose it.

The biggest issue is the battery chemistry and the cooling system they chose, likely for cost. I believe the cells are only rated up to 70kW charge rate, if my memory serves correctly. 70kW is the highest amount of regen I've seen in my Bolt.
The battery's cooling system only cools one side of the battery pack, so it can only keep up with 55kW without overheating the battery during extended charging. If they opted for a cooler that cools both sides of the battery (top & bottom), it could have charged a bit faster at 70kW, like the Hyundai Kona that uses the same cells and likely a better (more costly) cooling system.

The Bolt / EUV are decent cars if you're not going to use them for longer road trips very often. The price is very reasonable. They aren't very fun/interesting vehicles - I wouldn't personally buy one due to that. I don't need a sports car, but I do like a car with some redeeming dynamic qualities. Most people don't seem to care, though, and the Bolt kind of fits the same niche as the original Honda Fit - something that is very well suited for the urban world without being totally out of place outside of the city.
The charging speed is a big limitation if you're going to be driving more than 200ish miles in a day very often, but it'll work in a pinch. If I made weekly trips that required charging I would look at a gas car in this price range (Ok, I'd just get a Civic Si or Elantra N).
I got a Model 3 Long Range this year, and the long distance road trip cadence in it is pretty good -
90%->10% is basically 4 hours of driving. From there, you can:
Charge for ~5 minutes, to drive 1 hour (Pee break)
Charge for ~10-13 minutes to drive 2 hours (Just long enough for you to realize that you don't really have enough time to do anything) - This cadence is usually going to be the fastest for road trips.
Charge for ~20-25 minutes to drive 3 hours (Enough time to eat a meal at a fast casual place)
Charge for ~40+ minutes to drive 4 hours (Enough time to eat a meal at a quick sit down restaurant)
I haven't taken a truly long distance road trip in the Tesla, but I wouldn't hesitate to do it at all. It did great in a trip up Mount Washington, and it does longish day trips as well as a gas car does.
With the Bolt, it's more like:
Charge for ~20 minutes to drive 1 hour
Charge for ~40 minutes to drive 2 hours
Charge for ~70 minutes to drive 3 hours
With one stop along the way and destination charging, a Bolt wouldn't be too bad, but if you're doing a longer road trip those waits will pile up pretty quickly. Anything more than occasionally is too often. The compromise is real.

I REALLY looked into this car... and a Tesla 3.... I rented and drive the EUV for a day as well. Although I REALLY like this Bolt EUV... I had to go with the Model 3. Here are the THINGS I LIKED BETTER about the BOLT EUV:
    1) The adaptive cruise is more aggressive.
    2) The adaptive cruise paddle is great.
    3) I like the more normal display. Everything is REALLY easy to get used to.
    4) Apple Carplay and Android are here
    5) Satellite Radio
    6) A Sunroof that opens
    7) Vented Seats
    8) Supercruise is amazing. Full hands free on the right roads. Tesla isn't there (YET).
BUT I had to go with the Model 3 Standard Range because:
    1) Bolt seats are very uncomfortable on long trips. I heard they made them better but still wasn't feeling great.
    2) Charge time. NOT Range. The Model 3 is only about 30 miles more in range but I used A Better Route Planner to map some long trips and the Bolt is basically unusable. A trip from LA to Reno in Bolt requires 2 hours and 49 mins in stops and in Tesla long range only 57 mins. The charing is slow and outdated... one of the biggest things holding this car back.
    3) The bolt won't be around long when the equinox comes out next year.
    4) Nothing beats the Supercharger network. The other chargers take several tries to get a good one working.. the US will BE THERE with the other chargers eventually but right now, nothing beats Teslas network.
    5) You can to to 100% charge on the Model 3 standard with the LFP battery!
    6) Sound system is way better.. Bolt has a Bose system that's not great at all.
That's my thoughts... it WAS A TOUGH decision!!! And I am NOT getting a Tesla because I'm some sort of fanboy.... I want the car that's right and makes sense.. and it sucks giving up those great 8 features above not in Tesla.... but no way I can survive on that 55kw max (never really gets there) charge speed. Hope this helped someone.

I want to know why the Chevy volt was cancelled! Not the currently named Bolt. Customer use and satisfaction was good with the Chevy Volt. Yet, Chevrolet recalled them all, and had them destroyed. I want to think the head of the Chevy motor division was under pressure by China. With no reason, all Chevy Volts were recalled, And customers were not allowed to keep them. Customers said they were getting good mileage and no break downs. To me, the Chevy Volt was great hope. And Chevrolet could have made a ton of money from production of these cars. From what I understand, they were reasonably priced. Cheaper than Tesla. From what I understand, this could have a been regular production car for the beginning of the electric car age. (It's hard to describe this.)
