Mr. Burnett is just a treasure.
If you ever get to part of pre-production/production story departments on a modern big budget film, you will see these directors who come from low budget, social drama films be completely unprepared for the politics not only from the studio, but from the heads of departments who all try and take over when they see weakness or an opening. You have to know what you want, how to communicate it and keep all the egos in line. It is not a job many can do well.
Glad to see two people with your levels of expertise have discourse on this.

Great to see two industry professionals have an intelligent discourse. I'm tired of watching RUclipsrs who have never worked in the industry purport to be experts.
And yet the very same youtubers you are bashing for having never worked in the industry. Came to the same conclusion about frauds in Hollywood far earlier without the experience.
OBLIVION was really good and criminally underrated and overlooked. It felt like an old school sci-fi movie from from the 60's and 70's, but with modern day special effects.

Half the battle in today's era is to get "fraudulent creators" to at least not be so politically compulsive. It's like today's entertainment industry, etc, has become one gigantic version of Amber Heard or Meghan Markle. Or Sam Bankman-Fried or Alvin Bragg, etc.
We'd probably have fewer "fraudulent creators" if studios invested in more low budget and mid budget films. That way, directors and screenwriters can refine their creative voices and gain more experience before moving to tentpole projects.

One of my favourite shows (in recent years) is 'The Expanse' - brilliant Science Fiction expertly adapted from the book series (with the participation of the authors). The cast not only did read-throughs, they actually got together on weekends to rehearse (without pay) because they were so passionate about the characters/story - and it shows.

This is one of the best insightful take on the greatest problem that Hollywood studio system have . Everything rob is saying is coming from a non emotional standpoint with a inside point of view. Rob and his co host was very interesting and insightful.They went right to the main problem.

Though I think he actually dodged a bullet not trying to take on an 'ALIEN' franchise remake as his sophmore follow-up!

Lack of quality control, lack of fiscal control, lack of oversight, and now lack of creative force is killing Hollywood. Thank the good Lord they do not manufacture automobiles or anything else.

Yeah, it was funny when I finally sat down to watch the Star Trek TNG BluRay Extras and say RMBs credit pop up as the 'director/producers' for most of the 'Bonus Feature' documenataries & interviews!
Jar Jar Abrams is a prime example of this topic. He ruined two franchises, and Zaslav had to ask him what the heck his company was doing with all the $$ Warner gave IRobot as part of a deal.

I saw pictures of House of the Dragon doing table reads for season one during the pandemic. What this interview or "appointment" boils down to is a lack of both competency and due diligence that is pervasive in Hollywood. I'm not trying to insult creatives because I'm one myself but starting small and climbing the hill is better than taking the express elevator. If you're looking at this topic from a sustainable career perspective.
I think a lot of studios/production companies would benefit from getting back to compositional storytelling basics.
Yeah building out a story from the ground up seems to have fallen away to building a story around a particular outcome. It's like trying to construct a building without a foundation. We can see what the idea was but are left baffled when the unsupported structure falls. Example building a morality tale around a love story versus building the love story with a morality tale. One works the other doesn't. This is the best I can describe what I see in modern media.

You guys are right on with marketing. What ever happened to the old Hollywood hype? "From visionary filmmaker Robert Eggers comes his biggest film yet.".
But, The Northern is nothing great... Far from it.
It's just not a well executed movie.
I'm not excusing the poor marketing, but..I also gotta say that that movie just came up short...really short.
It's got BIG Hollywood names, but, compared to his previous two movies, Northman just didn't deliver.

I am from altadena and I am 31. Never in my life living here do I remember snow sticking on the ground ever. In la Canada they got a lot more than us and I'm on the mountain
Shang-Chi at LEAST had 2 of the most memorable Marvel 'Action Scenes' in the last few movies. The 'Bendy Bus' fight and the fight on the 'Scaffolding' were both extremely inventive and entertaining!
And I can't remember ANY of of the 'action beats' from Eternals, Black Widow, Strange 2, Thor 4, Panther 2, or Quantumania... Closest example might be the 'piano notes' bit from Multiverse, and it was unusual, but not necessarily EXCITING...
This was a surprise recommendation... but a good one. I can see ideas and lessons I can transfer to novel writing. Thanks for this interview.

Marketing "experts" do not know how to market intelligent films. That's a huge problem in Hollywood. How did movie marketing fall so far from the 70s?!? That's a whole story in and of itself. Should be a podcast and some investigative journalism into this issue.

19:53 Script Doctor makes a great point that I never considered. This has to be one of the reasons we get fewer and fewer great films.
'Ant-Man: Quantumania' was poorly written. But so was a movie like 'Captain Marvel' which made a billion dollars. We also have to take into consideration the current context of the MCU as a whole. Had it been sandwiched between better movies, I'm sure Ant-Man 3 would have done better. But the lead-ins were 'Thor: Love & Thunder', perhaps the single worst MCU movie to date, and the 'Wakanda Forever' without T'Challa and with a pretty tame villain. Not to mention a ton of sub-par Disney+ shows that have really sucked all the fun and energy out of the franchise. The excitement for the MCU is simply not there anymore.

You touched early on in this discussion on something that I found weird at the time and now look back on as a sign of things to come: J J Abrams directed not one, but two, Star Trek movies despite not liking the franchise. As you said, he was very open about it when doing interviews and more or less said that he did the movies to get Lucasfilms attention so he could direct a Star Wars movie. Despite this the movies could have worked if he did it with respect but instead he just did action movies with a Star Trek veneer. They really didn’t feel like ST. I’m no trekkie but I found it to be such a weird, narcissistisc and disrespectful thing to do. These days though it seems to be the modus operandi of most ppl in Hollywood.
I'm miss his takes on John Campea's show so much. He's right on the money about Abrams. Those are not Star Trek except in name only and Rob's been pretty clear in his hatred for Discovery.
I have a small little You Tube channel, but man would I love to get in a conversation with you and Rob. You guys are spot on.

Great Episode and Knowledge from You Both, How Should a Completely Independent Filmmaker Work Their Way Up to Get Investors?
I took a course this semester on Big Data that was eye opening to me about the trends in pop culture. Briefly and simply put, Big Data is any an all data about peoples' online activities which is then analyzed to produce predictions. The idea is that companies use the data to find the exact collection of attributes that people like in a thing, and then tailor products to appeal to one specific audience, or the largest audience. One glaring issue with Big Data is that some type of analytical algorithm MUST be used before you can extract any type of meaning; if the algorithm is shoddy or skewed in some way .... or a significant portion of the population isn't chronically online .... well, the prediction may not be correct.
Big Data is the new fad with large corporations, its essential being used to try to find how to make the most money with the least amount of effort on the company's part. I think that Big Data is contributor to why we aren't seeing any 'real' new ideas in cinema - not from big studios anyway.
Big Data is the bane of marketing. Because the creative side of Hollywood cannot predict what audiences will respond to and how, at least in no concrete way. As a result, big data collection has given the safe "evidence" to reject something great without as severe of consequences compared to 30 years ago. If Star Wars didn't exist and was pitched today, big data would reject it with marketing because the research would suggest the concept wouldn't sell with audiences.
As you probably well know, Erik Jendresen drafted a Star Trek film called The Beginning about the 2159 Romulan War, but it was shelved due to JJ Abrams 2009 Star Trek film.
Christopher McQuarrie, and some other talented people on this video, wrote a pitch for far future Star Trek series called Star Trek Federation, which was also shelved because of JJ Abrams 2009 Star Trek film.
JJ Abrams has produced the Mission Impossible films since the third entry, but has left the Mission Impossible franchise with Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning, which Christopher McQuarrie is directing. On top of that, Erik Jendresen is co-writing Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 2.
None of this really confirms anything, but there could be a chance that Christopher McQuarrie had a falling out with JJ Abrams, maybe over JJ Abram’s handling of the Star Wars/Star Trek franchise, and Christopher McQuarrie is now planning on developing a new Star Trek TV show with fellow trekker Erik Jendresen, and they are testing the waters with Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 2 to see if they are a good fit as creative partners.

McQuarrie did good stuff, he wrote and directed one of my favorite movies, The Way of The Gun.
When I first heard that Marvel was going to produce 4 films a year, I wondered what they were thinking. However, I figured if you rely on the comics to be the skeleton of your story telling, and then improve upon that it could be successful. You have to be able to tell when reading the comics just what is it that makes the story good, and what can you cross over into film. Beyond that I thought that maybe they had hit upon the idea to run the whole thing like the Manhattan Project. Naturally you need someone with a genius level intellect to head up such a project, but like Manhattan you would also need to let collaboration and information sharing to move across all parts of the larger goal; Make a cohesive, compelling, entertaining universe of stories. You would also need people in the middle that had the talent and the strong desire to faithfully make sure that all the creative's had whatever they needed to execute to the best that could be humanly done. Well to a certain degree with phases 1-3 it looks like that was the plan and where it was going. Their were hiccups but you expected improvement as time passed.
As it turns out though, you didn't have a genius level intellect running things. You didn't have a system that knew when to push back, when to leave well enough alone, and how to handle the politics in a way that benefited not just the product, but the infrastructure funding the project. Yep, that would've been a dream come true, and unfortunately it didn't come true, it unraveled.
Some of what you guys are talking about reminds me of the Peter Principle. It's a workplace theory that states a person gets promoted based on their level of competence. However, they eventually reach a level where they are no longer competent usually due to their skills no longer being applicable to their current job (Michael Scott from THE OFFICE is a perfect example of this). So it sounds like Hollywood is in part just hiring writers because they were good at something else, without thinking if they're actually a good fit.
Mission Impossible 3 was a disappointment at the box office… made less than 2… The franchise’s comeback was Ghost Protocol with Brad Bird.
is why i miss the fox searchlight films which should serve as a type of place that new creatives should be starting out in and essentially graduate from before moving into larger main stream projects.

How much of that, “he or she has directed a movie that didn’t suck, so we’ll give them the keys to a megabuck franchise” attitude in Hollywood is the result of Lord of the Rings? Who knew who Peter Jackson was outside of New Zealand and Australia when New Line greenlit his “I’ll shoot all three movies at the same time!” pitch. Then the third movie comes out, and it’s one of the biggest cinema events in history. Return of the King pretty much sweeps the Oscars and people are actually upset that they couldn’t give Andy Serkis and his team of mo-cap animators an Oscar for best supporting actor.
Now it seems to me that every studio in Hollywood is hoping that Chloe Zhao will somehow be the next Peter Jackson when they put her on the Eternals.
I think this happens in all businesses, it happens in my company also, and I think we have got a management level that do not quite understand the business, and then there is this engineer that the management think is extremely good, so theygive him all the tasks, and no one ever say no, so the quality end up being sub par and us with not the same status to fix everything, in my company this have been going on for more than 30 years and are comical or tragic depending on your life philosophy

It was great to see two people I respect talking shop, and even better to note that we all seem to be on the same, or a very similar page regarding the state of the industry. The only thing I would perhaps disagree with were Rob's comments about us being lucky with current Sci-Fi. Aside from a couple of exceptions (and no, "Dune" isn't one of them, I find Denis very technically competent, but the scripts and story editing choices he makes... oof), there really haven't been that many films I have been particularly enthusiastic about, but I know Rob is a bit more optimistic than I am on these things.
They hired JJ because he did Star Trek and that's the fundamental problem with Disney. They have no knowledge of their own properties.
Anyone who's ever seen a Star War or Star Trek will tell you that they both have "Star" in the name and the similarities end there. They are not remotely similar stories, universes, or even genres.

This feels like a Godzilla movie made by a director who’s embarrassed to be making a Godzilla movie.
He also wanted to make a Star Wars movie that was set in that universe but didn't have Jedi, basically not a Star Wars film. I expect you mean Gareth Edwards. A war documentary with realism. The studio compromised his vision and he was replaced at the end by Gilroy.
Nothing wrong with Godzilla 2014. Sometimes it's better to not see the monster all the time and actually have a story to tell.
A bit of history on the 'teaser before the teaser', etc and this is my opinion. Back in 2011, Volkswagen and their ad agency Deutsch made a commercial which would likely change ad campaigns forever - The 'Star Wars' kid for Volkswagen. They got huge accolades and lots of virtual impressions from it, which basically every Super Bowl Commercial since has copied their same formula. This probably continues today until the next big thing comes, unfortunately.

The worst is Disney. They've destroyed Star Wars. I have a lot of respect for Kathy Kennedy except as the head of Lucasfilm. I Like just about everything else she has been attached to, accomplished. Great executive producer, and producer. Co-founder of Amblin. Smart as a whip. She isn't George Lucas. Turned Star Wars from a multi billion dollar film juggernaut into a tv streaming franchise.

12:54 Exactly. Everything Jeff Loveness says about his Marvel stuff worries me. He always talks about simplifying it and “making a movie you can watch your cousin with.” And Quantumania felt absurdly vague and dumbed down, as well as wrapped up in a neat little bow - too neat of a bow. He didn’t seem interested in addressing the characters’ pasts beyond surface level stuff (are Hope & Hamk still fugitivers?).
You don’t want someone who’s averse to complex storytelling - to write the next Avengers movie. You want someone crazy (in a good way (like Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely) who’s obsessed with clever combinations and organizing characters inito a tapestry. I don’t see how that’s Loveness.
It truly enrages me internally to witness basically decent people, regardless of their chosen personal identifiers (I'm not talking about "pronouns" either), consume "progressive" propaganda. And these individuals you guys reference are some of the main purveyors. The masks are off. Fame has been replaced with infamy. There is no satisfactory justification on either side, consumption or production.
There is no audience fatigue, no Star Wars fatigue, no Marvel fatigue, etc. The only fatigue is for garbage crap trash. Okay, it's oxymoronic. I am quite fatigued of Disney. The fatigue of seeing once extremely popular film and television series subjects vandalized in the name of twisted ideologies is there. The sub-culture which fosters this is repulsive to the vast majority of people it turns out, to the great surprise of that sub-culture. Their response to that realization has been very enlightening. They do not handle rejection very well. Repeating the losing formula over and over speaks volumes about their sanity.
No, Cameron isn't a fraudulent creator. I've thoroughly enjoyed many of his creations. But it turns out that he has been influenced by the slime around him, evidenced by some of his liberal idiot comments.

And JJ wasn’t even that much of a Star Wars fan. No fan would bus toss his own movie during the red carpet premiere interview by saying, regarding The Rise Of Skywalker, “If you don’t like movie, that’s alright. If you do like it, what were you thinking? (Nervous laughter)”. He knew it was dead on arrival, and didn’t care. He got paid. When the media was touting him as “the next Spielberg”, he’s a fan of that. He wants to be that creative powerhouse in Hollywood. But he didn’t want to put in the work to build that reputation. Before he was able to get projects like 1941 and E.T. greenlit, Spielberg had to cut his teeth and sharpen his craft helming episodes of Columbo and The Night Gallery. Other than being a babysitter of Spielberg’s kids and a EP’ing a few hits on tv like Felicity and Alias, Abrams had no such crash course. He pretty much started in the industry on third and was just waiting to be waved in. All the privileges, zero originality.
I really enjoyed Wally Pfister's (Nolan's former DP) directorial debut "Transcendence" with Johnny Depp. But since that flopped, he hasn't gotten any directorial jobs in film since, which is a shame.

Last 4 months, Rob (the rain). I'm in Hollywood. It snowed one day back in the mid nineties up on Mulhulland. People in L.A. forget the rain in weeks. Make yer own movies. We would have killed for your tech in the sixties.
The entertainment industry has fallen over the edge. The people in charge lack the basics of how to produce the best product.

Yea it’s nepotism-entropy… eventually the practice of just hiring “who you know” results in nobody knowing anything and nobody being good at anything.
I've watched a lot of JJ stuff early on , but with hindsight, he never had any idea of where his stuff was going. I really enjoyed "Alias" but the show runners never had any idea from one season to the next where the story was going and they were making it up as they along. They did a good job with what they had.
Great show horrible ending. Just like Lost. JJ can't do endings i even hated the ending of Mission Impossible 3, and Rise of Skywalker.
@@matthewgaudet4064 Though at least with TV he can stretch out the 'Mystery Box' concept for a FEW YEARS before needing to start coming up with EXPLANATIONS. And it's when he tries to provide answers to the mysteries that all of his projects seem to fall apart...
